The diverse functions of CRISPR-Cas systems in uncultivated Archaea:
Huberiarchaeum in zwei unterschiedlichen Ökosystemen analysiert. Small symbiotic archaea of the DPANN superphylum are some of the most mysterious organisms on earth. To better understand these mostly uncultivated organisms, the natural interaction of two such DPANN archaea – the free living DPANN archaeon Ca. Altiarchaeum and its episymbiont Ca. Huberiarchaeum – was described in a recent article entitled „A predicted CRISPR-mediated symbiosis between uncultivated archaea“, published in Nature Microbiology in 2023 [9]. In this study based on metagenomics and metatranscriptomics, the host Ca. Altiarchaeum encoding two different CRISPR-Cas systems and its episymbiont Ca. Huberiarchaeum were analysed in two different ecosystems. In both of them, the immune system of the host did not only target viruses but also the genome of the episymbiont. Assuming a direct cytoplasmic contact, metabolic modeling clearly demonstrated that the episymbiont cannot survive without its host and that the CRISPR-targeting can even be lethal. This kind of immune defense – based on CRISPRCas – could be identified bio-informatically in the genomes of other Archaea in aquatic ecosystems. All things considered, the analyses indicate that CRISPR-Cas systems and the way they function can be more complex than previously known. However, a direct proof in a laboratory by cultivating these organisms is still due because of a lack of suitable cultivation methods

Becoming a disagreeable citizen – disagreement orientation and citizenship education: A multilevel analysis of Norwegian adolescents’ disagreement orientation
Highlights:
The findings support viewing disagreement orientation as multidimensional, with debate seeking and conflict aversion being twodistinct dimensions of disagreement orientation
There are different factors that impact debate seeking and conflict
Characteristics of citizenship education has impact on conflict avoidance, but not debate seeking.
Debate seeking is related to individual background variables, such as political interest, political conversation, and news-consumption
Purpose: This study explores debate seeking and conflict avoidance as dimensions of disagreement orientation, and how factors such as citizenship education and individual background may impact how young people engage in situations with conflicting political perspectives. The aim is to study whether how we facilitate citizenship education may affect young people to be more comfortable with political disagreement.
Design/methodology/approach: Multilevel modelling and factor analysis is performed using a survey among a selection of Norwegian fifteen-year-olds.
Findings: Citizenship education characteristics impact conflict avoidance but not debate seeking. Debate seeking is rather related to individual background factors such as political interest and attention paid to the news. Finally, the dimensions form basis of a potential typology of young people’s disagreement orientation
Research limitations/implications: Further research is needed to establish causality, however the results have implications for the role of disagreement in teacher education and classrooms
Nathaniel Pringsheim and the sexual revolution in algae research: an homage to his 200th birthday:
Nathanael Pringsheim, born on November 30, 1823, began his scientific career with studies in philosophy and medicine before turning to experimental analytical botany, whose development was significantly shaped by him while assuming a pioneer role at the same time. His research on algae revolutionized the contemporary understanding of sexuality, which he recognized as a fundamental principle of life. Additionally, he identified a alternation of generations between sexual and asexual reproduction in algae, which promotes genetic diversity and adaptability. In the course of plant evolution, variations in this alternation of generations enable the colonization of new habitats. Pringsheim‘s work marks an exciting transition to modern natural science. On the one hand, he critically opposed speculative natural philosophy and metaphysics and was firmly rooted in modern biology and cell theory in his investigation of individual plant development. On the other hand, he adhered to an idealistic theory of evolution influenced by Goethe. He used his scientific influence and organizational skills to establish the German Botanical Society. Moreover, he was significantly involved in the establishment of the first German marine biological research station on Helgoland in 1892
Reproduction of assimilationist thinking in Norwegian social studies: Breaking the cycle through reflective practice
Highlights:
We have learned that we, as teachers and teacher educators, need to be aware of the risk of reproducing uncritical approaches in educational interventions on migration.
Without crucially reflecting on their own practice, even social studies teachers dedicated to anti-racist thinking risk reproducing assimilationist values.
The article argues that this risk can be mitigated when teachers critically evaluate their own practice as a precondition for facilitating transformative learning in their students.
Purpose: The article aims to critically reflect on a classroom situation where we, as upper secondary social studies teachers, were complicit in reproducing and soliciting assimilationist values in a student assignment.
Design/methodology/approach: We use a critical reflective model to 1) reflect on our discomfort at this complicity, 2) analyse the assimilationist values reproduced, and 3) redesign the assignment to promote inclusive citizenship.
Findings: The article exposes the risk and potential of being vulnerable about our practice as teachers and of opening the classroom as a safe space for critical thinking.
Research limitations/implications: More research is needed on how social studies teachers understand integration and how they (re)design their own assignments.
Practical implications: Without crucially reflecting on their own practice, even social studies teachers dedicated to anti-racist thinking risk reproducing assimilationist values. This risk can be mitigated when teachers critically evaluate their own practice as a precondition for facilitating transformative learning in their students
Change in citizenship and social science education in (post)war time
According to the Global Conflict Tracker (https://www.cfr.org/global-conflict-tracker), there are currently 27 conflicts in the world, which vary in type and status. In contrast, the Rule of Law in Armed Conflict Online Portal (RULAC), which defines armed conflicts under international humanitarian law, indicates that it is currently monitoring more than 114 armed conflicts in the world (https://geneva-academy.ch/galleries/today-s-armed-conflicts). Some of these conflicts are in the headlines; others are not. However, they all change the lives and functioning of people living there or those who neighbour them. How does education respond to current, future, and past armed conflicts
Didactic Gaps – a Problem in the Professional Practice of Teachers Who Teach Social Studies?
From a Social Science didactic perspective, this article focuses on how teachers deal with subject-specific didactic knowledge in the subject of Social Studies at comprehensive schools in North Rhine-Westphalia. Social Studies is a subject that is characterized by its links to the university subjects of History, Social Sciences and Geography – a combination that hardly any teachers have as part of their studies. Against this background, the question arises which requirements do teachers have in terms of didactic knowledge in such an integrated subject? Based on the results, the article proposes steps towards a subject-didactic-reflective integration competence (F-R-I-K)
