The diverse world of parasites − guests of tropical army ants:

    No full text
As top arthropod predators, army ants play a significant ecological role in tropical rainforests. However, it is often forgotten that they also promote local biodiversity, as a variety of organisms benefit from their presence. Army ant colonies provide habitats for hundreds of species, including antbirds, inhabitants of garbage dumps, and parasitic “subtenants” such as various species of beetles, flies, and silverfish. Many of these visitors rely on the presence of the ants. As nomadic hunters, army ants require large hunting territories and are therefore threatened with local extinction by the destruction and fragmentation of rainforests. Therefore, their large number of benefiting species with their remarkable adaptations to living with the ants, is also at risk. If we want to preserve this fascinating microcosm, we must increase our efforts to conserve tropical rainforests

The Healthy Waters science-based educational intervention programme: The potential of participatory approaches for developing and promoting students’ environmental citizenship

    - Schools reproduce scientific knowledge uncritically. - Schools should provide educational opportunities for students’ action, reflection, and interaction. - Participatory approach allows students to expand their agency around climate change. - Participatory approach promotes students’ knowledge of their community’s environmental problems. Purpose: This paper explores the potential of students’ participation in the HW educational intervention programme based on participatory methodologies in promoting their environmental citizenship. Design/methodology/approach: Using a quasi-experimental design, 126 students were randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups and filled out questionnaires before and after the HW intervention to evaluate environmental citizenship dimensions. Findings: The psychometric properties of a 16-item instrument to measure youth environmental citizenship were validated. After the HW intervention, the students’ intervention group had a significant improvement in their sense of environmental efficacy. Research limitations/implications: The cross-sectional design of this study does not allow causal inferences to be made; further research should conduct longitudinal studies. Practical implications: Schools must promote educational experiences where students have opportunities for reflection and action in interaction in a climate of openness to dialogue and diversity with the involvement of different actors

Situationality in teaching controversial topics: (When) does controversial equal difficult?

    No full text
Most teachers in the Netherlands do not report difficulty in discussing the most controversial topics. Anti-muslimism, COVID vaccination, and integration of ethnic minorities are perceived as relatively difficult topics to discuss. High teacher self-efficacy and school support are related to reported ease in discussing all controversial topics. Specific controversial topics are considered more challenging to discuss in diverse classrooms in terms of SES and ethnicity. Controversial topics are perceived as more difficult to discuss in vocational educational tracks. Purpose: This study examines what controversial topics teachers in the Netherlands perceive as difficult to discuss and if and how this difficulty is related to teachers’ background characteristics and context characteristics. Methodology: 1034 secondary school teachers filled in an online questionnaire, and structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to explore the relationships among variables. Findings: The findings indicate that recent topics with a direct large impact on students’ lives and society, like COVID vaccination, are perceived as most difficult to discuss. With more perceived school support and high self-efficacy teachers report more ease to discuss controversial topics. Yet, reported difficulty to discussing controversial topics is also partially context- and person-specific, involving (among others) classroom composition, school subject and teacher’s age. Practical implications: This study can inform the development of subject and context-specific teaching materials and training programs in civic and democratic education
