Crisis of Infertility: Effects of Length of Treatment on Emotional and Marital Adjustment

    Get PDF
Twenty infertile couples participated in the present study to investigate whether infertile couples receiving medical treatment experience changes in their emotional, marital and sexual adjustment as a result of the length of time they have been in treatment. The couples were divided into three groups based on how long they had been seeking medical attention for infertility. The instruments administered were: SCL-90-R (Symptom Checklist), Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) and Index of Sexual Satisfaction (ISS). It was predicted couples who were in the initial stages of treatment would experience increased levels of emotional, marital and sexual distress, however those levels would taper off and only increase again if they remained in treatment over two years. The results indicated the highest level of emotional distress was experienced in the second year when treatment regimens usually begin. There were no significant differences among the three groups on measures of marital and sexual adjustment. Psychological intervention was recommended at the beginning of the treatment process to help alleviate any associated emotional distress

    No full text
Designed to keep pace with educational reform movements that have increased the responsibilities of classroom teachers, this book show preservice and in-service social studies teachers how to design courses that are efficient and effective and that emphasize the values, concepts, and skills that are characteristic of the content. Key Topics: This book focuses on an integrated organizational pattern that helps teachers gain insights into the social studies as a curriculum and instructional field; relate social studies understandings with disciplinary subject matter content and processes; recognize the relationships that exist between the components of instruction for design and development purpose; and plan and present courses, units and lessons that are based upon a specific model of instruction. This book encourages social studies teachers to present issues from many different points of view, thus implementing social studies standards for increased use of reflective and critical thinking in today\u27s classrooms. It provides systematic procedures and step-by- step models to help both beginning and experienced teachers design, develop and execute instruction to meet the challenge of conflicting and overlapping course goals.https://falconcommons.utpb.edu/utpb-facbooks/1017/thumbnail.jp

Analysis of Levels of Self-Esteem Among Male and Female High Achievers

    Get PDF
This study investigated the hypothesis that female high-achievers possess lower self-esteem than their male counterparts at the high school level. This hypothesis was derived from an analysis of the self-esteem theory in relation to sex related roles and cultural norms. The hypothesis was tested using high school juniors and seniors, 37 male and 48 female students who were enrolled in Advanced Placement Honor classes at Odessa High School. Results showed that the females’ mean scores were considerably lower in each category of the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale. The results supported the hypothesis that in high school, high-achieving females have lower self-esteem than high-achieving males

The Impact of Social Support on Long Term Adult Psychological Functioning: Study of the Role of a Confidant in Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse

    Get PDF
This project examined the effects a confidant had on adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. The subjects were volunteer adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse solicited from undergraduate and graduate psychology classes at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. Volunteers completed a childhood sexual abuse questionnaire, a confidant questionnaire, the Jaloweic Coping Scale and the Brief Symptom Inventory in a structured interview. The Jaloweic Coping Scale determined the coping styles and the Brief Symptom Inventory determined the symptom level. Those subjects that had a confidant were expected to have more successful coping styles and fewer symptoms as adults. Analysis revealed that there was not a significant difference between those with a confidant within two years of the abuse and those that had a confidant later in life for symptom levels and effective coping styles. Adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse negative symptoms and coping style effectiveness does not seem to be effected by the presence of a confidant within two years following the sexual abuse

Evaluating Kinetic Family Drawings as a Screening Device for the Identification of At-Risk First Graders in Public Schools

    Get PDF
The assessment and evaluation of the Kinetic Family Drawing Instrument as a screening device was used to identify possible at risk” first grade students in public school. It was hypothesized that the KFD would serve as a better means of identification than teacher referral alone. Seventy-five first grade students from a Chapter I school participated in the study. A check list of seven classroom behaviors was given to the teachers of the participating students to identify at risk behaviors in the classroom. It was found that if the teacher check list were used as the sole source of at risk identification, thirty-five of the seventy-five students would not be identified. If the KFD samples-were used in conjunction with the teacher check-list, only nine students would not be identified. Therefore, the-Kinetic Family Drawing Instrument in conjunction with teacher check lists is the best tool for the identification of young at risk students due to family or emotional circumstances

Movement Education in a Modified Montessori Pre-School Classroom

    Get PDF
A movement education program was designed to see what effect such a program would have on the motor skills of three year old children. Movement tasks and skills were introduced to the class as a whole. The rationale of this program is based on the observations of Piaget, Montessori, Gisell, and other theorists. The lessons are divided into three major areas of Body Awareness, Directionality, and Basic Body Movements. The movement education program was presented to ten (10) three year old students; while six (6) other three year old students comprised the control group. Pre-and post-tests of movement skills were individually administered. The children in the experimental group made no significant improvement over the children in the control group
