    Get PDF
A review of related literature indicated a person\u27s perception of negative life experiences may be unusually high prior to the onset of an illness. An external locus of control belief system may also be present prior to the onset of an illness. The present study used the Life Experiences Survey measure to compare the perception of life experiences of a group of people with CFIDS and a group of people without CFIDS. The present study also used the Locus of Control Scale to measure the locus of control belief system for the same two groups of people. The results of the present study indicated people with CFIDS do perceive life experiences as unusually negative in the year prior to the onset of CFIDS. The results also indicated people with CFIDS do not have an unusually external locus of control belief system. The implications of these findings were discussed

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Sexually Abused Children and Implications for Therapy

    Get PDF
This study examined the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in sexually abused children. Sixty-seven children volunteered to participate in this study. Of the 67 children, 33 (26 female and 7 male) were sexually abused and 34 (22 female and 12 male) were non-sexually abused. Several instruments were employed to assess the severity of the symptoms of PTSD including the Children\u27s PTSD Inventory, the Child Behavior Checklist, and the Children\u27s Depression Inventory, as well as others. The results of this study showed that sexually abused children have more symptoms of PTSD than non-sexually abused children. Early diagnosis and treatment of PTSD in children is extremely valuable because of the long term affects of childhood sexual abuse.

Adolescent Runaways: The Significance Between Non-Runaways and Runaways and Their Perceptions of Self, Their Parents and Their World

    Get PDF
Adolescents who run away from home cause major problems for themselves, for their parents, and for society. In this study runaways (n = 112) are compared to non-runaways (n = 211) in their perceptions- of self, their parents and the world in which they live by use of a self-reporting survey. It was hypothesized that runaways would have perceptions of self, parents, and the world that would be skewed to society\u27s unacceptable end of the scale. T-tests were performed on the difference of the means of each variable for the runaways and non-runaways. Out of 13 variables for each, a total of 39, seventeen variables were found to be significant (p \u3c 0.05). The findings demonstrated that the runaways\u27 perception is skewed more to the unacceptable end of the scale than are the non-runaways
