Martial Adjustment Among Nontraditional Graduate Students
Get PDFThis study used a pretest-posttest design to examine the marital adjustment of 108 nontraditional graduate students as-compared with 42 adults in the general population. Participants\u27 scores on the Dyadic Adjustment Scale showed no significant differences between the two groups, contrary to the study hypothesis. It was also hypothesized that the marital adjustment of graduate students would be better at the beginning of the semester term rather than at the end of the term, and that male graduate students would have a higher level of marital adjustment than female graduate students. Neither of these hypotheses were supported by the data. Overall, the results indicated that students whose spouses supported their academic commitments had a higher level of marital adjustment than students whose spouses did not support their efforts. Participants who had children living at home had- lower levels of marital adjustment than participants who did not have children at home

Brief Therapy: Theory and Practice
Get PDFThe psychotherapeutic environment is changing. Pressure from outside the profession is motivating changes that are resulting in cost cutting and cost containment. Health management organizations and preferred provider organizations are beginning to control third party payment to mental health providers. This is counselling the profession to reevaluate and remodel how it performs therapy as numbers of sessions become more limited. Therapy is changing from a long lasting relationship with a therapist, in which personality transformation is sought for the client, to forms of brief therapy in which only problems and solutions, arising from the immediate issues, are focused on. This work will look at why this is taking place, what the theoretical basis of brief therapy is, what claims of efficacy are being made through research, and what the implications are for the professional

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders in Adults and Insecure Attachment
Get PDFThe purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between obsessive-compulsive symptoms and disorders in adults and lack of secure childhood attachment. An additional hypothesis was that obsessive-compulsive individuals would most closely fit an avoidant pattern of adult attachment. A group of obsessive-compulsive adults, a group of adults with other emotional symptoms, and a normal group of adults representing the general population were measured using the Maudsley Obsessional-Compulsive Inventory, the Parental Bonding Instrument, the Attachment Style Questionnaire and Bartholomew’s Four-Group Model of Attachment. Results did not confirm a relationship between insecure childhood attachment and obsessive-compulsiveness. However, obsessive-compulsive subjects were found to be fearful avoidant, while normal subjects were found to be secure. Subjects in the middle group did not fit a specific attachment pattern. Possible explanations for the outcomes, limitations of the present study, and implications for further research were presented
Program Evaluation: A Look at a Case Management Program of Big Spring State Hospital Community Services
Get PDFCase management services are an expanding program in the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (TXMHMR) system\u27s treatment for chronically mentally ill individuals (CMI). CMI’s are individuals who are unable to maintain a stable adjustment to community life because of persistent and serious emotional disabilities. Previous research findings as to the effectiveness of this type of service in other programs have been mixed, and because of differences in program guidelines are not directly applicable to the TXMHMR program. The hypotheses of this study, which was a program evaluation of one specific program of case management, were two-fold; one, that the total number and total duration of hospital stays decrease for individuals involved in the case management program, when pre- and post-initiation of services hospitalizations are reviewed; and two, that there is an inverse relationship between length of time in case management and frequency and duration of hospitalization. The records of 70 CMI\u27s diagnosed with either Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder or Major Depression who were receiving services within this program were analyzed. Statistical analysis of the data supported the first hypothesis but did not support the second hypothesi
Student Satisfaction with the Counseling Education Program at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin
Get PDFA survey was conducted to assess student satisfaction of the Counseling Education program at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. The survey was given to currently enrolled counseling education students. Fifty-seven out of 68 students completed the survey. Several recommendations were made based on the results. Overall, the program is perceived as adequately meeting the satisfaction of the students
