Age and Violent Sexual Abuse: Does Victim\u27s Age and Violence Associated with Sexual Abuse Influence the Risk of Suicide?
Get PDFPrevious research on childhood sexual abuse has indicated an increased risk of suicide for children who experience more severe sexual abuse and children who experience sexual abuse accompanied by physical abuse. This study investigated the difference in suicide risk associated with varying severity of sexual abuse, and the difference in suicide risk associated with age at the time of sexual abuse. Data was collected from the psychological records of a state juvenile correctional facility for boys. Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference between those who experienced penetrating sexual abuse versus non-penetrating sexual abuse; however, an overall significant difference was found between those who experienced sexual abuse at or prior to the age of eight and those who experienced sexual abuse after the age of eight. In addition, a significant difference in suicidiation was found for the physically abused, and among , the various ethnicities, a significant difference in sexual abuse as well as suicidiation was found
Instruction in Strategies for Problem Solving Success
Get PDFThis study was conducted to determine if instruction in problem solving strategies would increase student achievement in mathematical problem solving. The study involved a control and an experimental group of eighth grade students. Limited English proficient students were included in the study to determine if they would benefit from the instruction as well. The experimental group participated in a unit of instruction in problem solving strategies prior to taking the post-test The students\u27 1996 seventh grade TAAS results were used as the pre-test. The 1996 eighth grade TAAS was administered for the post-test. Overall, the study revealed that the unit of instruction had a positive impact on the students
Dating Violence Among Adolescents: When Does it Begin?
Get PDFResearch has investigated dating violence (DV) in high * school populations- yet no studies have examined adolescents in the 7th and 8th grades. The present study investigated the prevalence of DV in the Permian Basin area of West - Texas. Comparisons of the prevalence of DV between junior high (7th & 8th grades), freshman high 4Sth grade)* and senior high school -(lOth, 11th, & 12th-grades) -found no significant differences of used or received DV. The prevalence of DV in the Permian Basin was similar to those found in some studies that used college-student -samples. Significant interactions effects and main effects were found for ‘ethnicity and gender in the DV subscales. Acceptance of violence was examined. This-analysis found that adolescents who had used dating violence were more accepting of violence in dating relationships. Significant between groups differences were found for ethnicity and gender

The Relationship between Childhood Aggression and Impulsiveness
Get PDFPrevious research on the relationship between children\u27s levels of aggression and impulsivity have been inconclusive. Studies of each of these behaviors independently have shown that they are correlated with many of the same factors. However, no studies have been found in which aggression and impulsivity have correlated specifically with each other. The purpose of the present study was to determine if a relationship exists between aggression and impulsivity in children. The participants of this study consisted of 115 children who had been tested at a center for behavioral analysis to determine diagnoses of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. They had been referred for testing because of behavioral problems or school performance problems. They include males and females between the ages of four years and fifteen years. Archival reports completed by parents and teachers were used to determine the participants\u27 levels of aggressive and impulsive behaviors. Statistical analysis revealed significant correlations between children\u27s levels of aggression and impulsivity as rated by parents L= -0.71, p \u3c .01) and teachers^ = -0.79, el\u3c .01)
