Shiloh: The Battle That Changed the Civil War
No full textThe bloodbath at Shiloh, Tenn. (April 6-7, 1862), brought an end to any remaining innocence in the Civil War. The combined 23,000 casualties that the two armies inflicted on each other in two days shocked North and South alike. Ulysses S. Grant kept his head and managed, with reinforcements, to win a hard-fought victory. Confederate general Albert Sidney Johnston was wounded and bled to death, leaving P.G.T. Beauregard to disengage and retreat with a dispirited gray-clad army. Daniel (Soldiering in the Army of Tennessee) has crafted a superbly researched volume that will appeal to both the beginning Civil War reader as well as those already familiar with the course of fighting in the wooded terrain bordering the Tennessee River. His impressive research includes the judicious use of contemporary newspapers and extensive collections of unpublished letters and diaries. Gifted Females: An Endangered Species
Get PDFExamination of gifted and talented programs reveals that there are equal numbers of male and female participants at the elementary school level. However further examination reveals, that males begin to increase in participation and accomplishments within these programs at the junior and senior high level, whereas the participation and accomplishments of gifted females begins to decrease. This change occurs in early adolescence, a time that is critical in the psychological development of gifted females. The purpose of this review of literature examines several psychological barriers that may inhibit the success of gifted females in academic areas and in the workforce. This literature review also examines the characteristics of five eminent women that may help gifted young females achieve success. Suggestions that can help the gifted female become a vital and productive member of society are included
A Study of Reliability of the Aspell Enneagram Inventory
Get PDFA reliability study of the Aspell Enneagram Inventory (Revised and Extended Version) was administered on two separate occasions to fifty-nine volunteer teachers and staff personnel at a secondary school in West Texas. Twenty males and thirty-nine females of various ages participated in the study. Results were mixed for the correlations obtained between the two test administrations. Per item reliability was low with a correlation mean of 0.55. Although 70% of the participants obtained results that were similar, the correlations were not high enough to be considered reliable. Inconsistencies within the results indicate that further research needs to be done

Rape Survivors: The Effects of Post-Traumatic Stress and Locus of Control on the Hoping Process
Get PDFThe current study examined the relationship between hope. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and locus of control in a sample, of 18 rape survivors and 18 non-raped females over 18 years of age. Instruments utilized were Herth Hope Scale, Structured Interview for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Impact of Events, and Locus of Control Scales. It was hypothesized that rape survivors would exhibit a lower level of hope, higher levels of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and an external locus of control. Independent t-tests revealed that rape trauma impacts Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Independent t-tests were inconclusive among the hope, impact of events, and locus of control variables among the group means. Pearson Correlations indicated that as hope levels increased, post traumatic levels decreased and that as hope levels increased, locus of control became more external. Correlations also found that as post traumatic stress disorder levels increased, locus of control became more external
