Alcohol and college students: Reasons, realization and intention to quit
No full textAlcoholism is a devastating social and economic problem in the United States, and young college students are perhaps most vulnerable to this problem. Using data from 892 students, this study empirically examines the determinants of intention to quit alcohol among college students. The results indicate that intention to quit drinking is positively associated with realization of excessive drinking, recall of alcohol ads, and escape as a reason for drinking, but negatively with fun as a reason for drinking. In turn, realization of excessive drinking is positively associated with recall of alcohol ads and deal-proneness, and escape, loneliness, and social, but not with fun, relaxation and taste as reasons for drinking. Discussion of these findings, their implications and limitations are provided in this study

No full textShankar (2009) proposes a new investment strategy for retirees that bundles Treasury Inflation Protected Securities with a deferred annuity to guarantee real annual withdrawal rates of 5% or more with no risk of financial ruin. This strategy addresses three problems that retirees face: longevity risk, inflation risk, and liquidity risk inherent in the purchase of an immediate annuity. In our article, we evaluate the performance of this proposed strategy under realistic assumptions about costs, security design, and markets. In addition, we evaluate how the bequest motive might affect the choice between Shankar\u27s strategy and an immediate annuity
Critically Assessing Classic Assimilation Theory and Alternative Perspectives for Immigrants and the Second Generation in the United States
No full textIn this paper, I address the most influential classic assimilation theory and its alternative perspectives. With regard to this issue, this paper addresses the questions “What is assimilation and if assimilation process successful in the Unites States how come characteristics of immigrant groups carry on through the second generation and beyond?” Meanwhile, differences among these theories are going to be explained. Drawing on theories of immigration, this paper attempts to understand the questions of “what is in common among these theories or what has changed?” In addition, this paper demonstrates how important these prevailing theories are in understanding the ongoing assimilation process of second generation immigrants in the United States. Finally, the strength, limitations and weaknesses of these aforementioned theories are explained in detail

The Importance of Ethical Environment to Organizational Performance in Employment at Will States
No full textThis article highlights the importance of ethical environment in enhancing organizational performance. It is vital that organizations set ethical standards for their employees alongside providing an environment that fosters trust and commitment, provides leadership, and creates a high quality of workforce to improve organizational performance. To study the impact of ethical environment on organizational performance, we employ elements from André de Waal’s high-performance organization (HPO) framework. Data for this study come from a national survey conducted in four states in the United States, which are classified as at-will employment states: Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Florida. We find evidence that ethical environment plays an important role in determining organizational performance. This is particularly important in the context of at-will employment, where state governments are facing the challenge to maintain employee commitment while improving organizational performance

A Conceptual Analysis of Cognitive Moral Development and Voice Behavior in an Organization
No full textThis study used Kohlberg\u27s (1966, 1969) cognitive moral development theory to analyze the relationship between an individual\u27s moral development level and his/her voice behavior. But the analysis of this study takes a deeper look into voice behavior in the context of cognitive moral development. Therefore, this study depicts a theoretical framework suggesting that individuals existing at a pre-conventional moral development stage will exhibit no to minimal levels of voice behavior within an organization. It is also proposed that individuals existing at a post-conventional level of moral development will exhibit average to high levels of voice behavior within an organization. Employee voice behavior has been linked to increasing organizational outcomes and is a vital antecedent of Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) which has been linked to increasing organizational effectiveness. Given the importance of voice behavior, the analysis seeks to provide future implications for theory and future managerial practices
