    Predicting Facebook Stalking: Examining Self-Control and Facebook Romantic Jealousy

    No longer do individuals have to wonder what others are doing on a daily basis. With the advent of social media, discovering other individual’s whereabouts and interests or gaining insight into their personal lives is at our fingertips. Facebook is the largest and most popular of these social networking sites with 1.06 billion users as of January 2013. With such a strong and prevalent presence in our lives, researchers have been examining the possible effects Facebook has on the population ever since Facebook first made its debut in 2004. Across various life domains, some studies show positive effects while others show negative ones. These domains include self-esteem and relationships. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationships between self-control, Facebook stalking, and Facebook romantic jealousy. It was predicted that an individual’s self- control would moderate the relationship between Facebook stalking and Facebook romantic jealousy. To test the moderation hypothesis, the predictor variable (Facebook jealousy), the moderator (self-control), and the product of the predictor and moderator were regressed on partner Facebook stalking. Self- control did not interact with Facebook Jealousy to predict Facebook staking. The study did not yield results supporting the hypothesis, however, correlations were found. The correlations found are as follows: a decrease in Facebook jealousy is related to an increase in Facebook stalking; as self-control increases, jealousy decreases; and lastly the amount of logins per day is positively related to Facebook jealousy. In future testing, another moderating factor may better predict Facebook stalking

    Analyzing delinquency among Kurdish adolescents : a test of Hirschi\u27s social bonding theory

    Analyzing Delinquency among Kurdish Adolescents uses Hirschi’s social bonding theory to examine the mediating effect of social bonding on delinquent behavior among Kurdish teenagers, who were used as a case study to test the usefulness of this theory. In this study, participants were selected from one Gülen movement affiliated school and one public or non-Gülen affiliated school. This study sheds light on Turkish society’s chaotic conditions in southeastern Turkey, particularly with respect to Kurdish adolescents’ involvement in the Kurdish Worker’s Party (PKK). There is a lack of research regarding how Kurdish adolescents are involved in delinquent behavior as portrayed in popular Turkish media. Social bonding theory, developed and mainly tested in American and western European contexts, needs additional exploration of its efficiency in a nonwestern, especially Islamic, society. Thus, this book helps to better understand the factors that influence crime and delinquency in developing, culturally diverse social structures. Scholars in sociology, psychology, and criminology, as well as in the fields of political science, Middle Eastern studies, and education, will greatly benefit from this study.https://falconcommons.utpb.edu/utpb-facbooks/1003/thumbnail.jp

    Is a pure TIPS strategy truly risk free?

    A Treasury Inflation‐Protected Security (TIPS) is virtually risk free. As an obligation of the U.S. Treasury, it is mostly free of default risk. As an inflation‐indexed security held to maturity, it is risk free in terms of purchasing power. However, investing in a TIPS‐only portfolio for retirement is not risk free. This paper presents the results of a simulation analysis designed to evaluate the performance of a portfolio of inflation‐indexed Treasury coupon bonds. This study demonstrates that significant shortfall risk exists for TIPS‐only portfolios across a range of savings plans and the securities selection rules

    Sustainability in the context of process engineering

    Computational process design for sustainability using various available techniques is still limited to computer-aided design featuring process optimization of energy and material flow plus minimizing greenhouse gas emission and water conservation. Sustainable process demands more, such as minimizing the impacts from other harmful emissions, discharges, waste creation, economic, and societal impacts. We have proposed an overall sustainability footprint, which in theory represents impacts of a process on all three domains of sustainability. This perspective article provides a critical analysis of attaining sustainability by minimizing this sustainability footprint using impact data as indicators. We also propose the use of the integration of the sustainability footprint in the computer-aided process design itself, rather than checking the impacts after the data have been collected on actual process options designed ahead of the analyses

    The Development of Stylolites in Carbonate Formation: Implication for CO2 Sequestration

    The impact of CO2 sequestration on the host formation is an issue occurring over geologic time. Laboratory tests can provide important results to investigate this matter but have limitations due to a relatively short timeline. Based on literature review and core sample observation, naturally occurred geological phenomena, stylolites are studied in this paper for understanding CO2 sequestration in deep carbonate formations. Stylolites are distinctive and pervasive structures in carbonates that are related to water‐assisted pressure solution. Pressure solution involving stylolitization is thought to be the main mechanism of compaction and cementation for many carbonates. In parallel, CO2 sequestration in carbonate formation involves extensive chemical reactions among water, CO2 and rock matrix, favoring chemical compaction as a consequence. An analogue between stylolites and CO2 sequestration induced formation heterogeneity exists in the sense of chemical compaction, as both pressure solution in stylolites and CO2 enriched solution in CO3 sequestration in carbonate formations may all introduce abnormal porous regions. The shear and/or tension fractures associated with stylolites zones may develop vertically or sub‐vertically; all these give us alert for long‐term safety of CO2 sequestration. Thus a study of stylolites will help to understand the CO2 sequestration in deep carbonate formation in the long run

INEF is an organization founded by environmental forensic scientists for the express purpose of sharing and disseminating environmental forensic information to the international scientific community. This professionally edited book is the third of a series of INEF conference publications chronicling the current state of the art in environmental forensics. Since the first INEF conference held in Qingdao, China in 2008, significant advances in the state of the art in environmental forensics have occurred, especially in the fields of compound specific isotope analysis (CSIA), biological and petroleum hydrocarbon pattern recognition and the use of advanced multivariate techniques for interpreting environmental forensics data. Of note in these proceedings is the application of environmental forensic techniques to examine contaminant issues associated with hydrofracking which has received considerable international attention in the past several years.     The Role of Microglia in Diabetic Retinopathy

    There is growing evidence that chronic inflammation plays a role in both the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy. There is also evidence that molecules produced as a result of hyperglycemia can activate microglia. However the exact contribution of microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system, to retinal tissue damage during diabetes remains unclear. Current data suggest that dysregulated microglial responses are linked to their deleterious effects in several neurological diseases associated with chronic inflammation. As inflammatory cytokines and hyperglycemia disseminate through the diabetic retina, microglia can change to an activated state, increase in number, translocate through the retina, and themselves become the producers of inflammatory and apoptotic molecules or alternatively exert anti-inflammatory effects. In addition, microglial genetic variations may account for some of the individual differences commonly seen in patient\u27s susceptibility to diabetic retinopathy
