Infrastructure beyond cities: perspectives from the Americas

    No full text
The study of infrastructure is becoming a common focus in research across the social sciences. In this endeavor, archaeologists are uniquely situated to assess how societies in the past created, and relied on, infrastructure over time, and the different ways it facilitated or impeded communication, movement, and social interaction through an understanding of the material record. However, most archaeological engagements with the study of infrastructure occur through case studies that closely mirror the modern contexts in which contemporary social scientists study infrastructure: within state-organized sociopolitical contexts or urban places. We use this article as an opportunity to review the literature on infrastructure, contextualize how it has been adopted in archaeology, and then advocate for expanding the study of infrastructure to non-urban small-scale societies. In doing so, we reassociate the notion of infrastructure with connective and cooperative human projects that unfold within and between places situated across social landscapes. This perspective requires one to divorce infrastructure from modernity and early urban projects and to recenter it within the material nature of human interaction. It is our goal to offer themes and perspectives drawn from contemporary notions of infrastructure to better understand the diverse forms and functions of built and natural environments apart from early urban places in the ancient Americas

    No full text
Aging is associated with a mul3system decline in physical, psychological, cogni-3ve, and mental func3ons, par3cularly highligh3ng mul3morbidity, frailty, loss of balance, and increased risk of falls. Physical exercise has shown evidence in preven3ng this decline, but not all older adults adapt to such interven3ons. In recent years, seri-ous games have emerged as a poten3ally effec3ve mul3factorial approach to coun-teract this decline. This study aims to co-develop and explore the effects of a mul3-factorial interven3on using mechanics and elements of an analogue game on balance-related performance and fall risk in individ-uals aged 65 and over living in the commu-nity. This is the second study—an explora-tory co-design study using a focus group—of a four-study research project involving older adults enrolled in Senior Universi3es in the Algarve region. The goal is to contrib-ute to the (par3cipatory) scien3fic evi-dence on an interven3on strategy for bal-ance and fall risk based on gaming. Under-standing the characteris3cs of the target popula3on will enable the proper planning of future interven3ons and studies. The use of a focus group methodology allows for the collec3on of qualita3ve data with direct involvement from key stakeholders. Co-crea3on adds value to the research and enhances the poten3al success of the game’s use by empowering and engaging users. The pilot study will support the de-sign of the interven3on study, which is ex-pected to contribute to the valida3on of a new interven3on protocol using an ana-logue game, to be tested in the experi-mental study.N/

Green versus conventional extraction of tunisian carob pulp: polyphenols, antioxidant capacity, and chemometric insights

    No full text
Carob pulp is a Mediterranean by-product highlighted as an important source of bioactive compounds potentially used in different industrial applications. This study compares extraction methods using both conventional (maceration-M, organic solvents and water) and non-conventional green techniques (ultrasound-assisted extraction -UAE, and natural deep eutectic solvents -NADES). Chemometric tools were applied to analyze the polyphenol profile by HPLC–HRMS and assess bioactive potential measured by Folin-Ciocalteu, DPPH and ABTS assays of carob pulp from two regions in Tunisia (North and South). Among the factors studied (extraction technique, solvent, and geographical location), the solvent contributed to the highest variability in the composition of the carob. The highest yield of total phenolics was achieved using the conventional ethanol 75 %-M method (5023.92 µg/g) and the green water-UAE (5008.32 µg/g), followed by the NADES (lactic acid: sodium acetate, 3:1) method (3117.23 µg/g). The latter method was notable for its high content of flavonols, hydrolizable tannins, and antioxidant potential. Significant differences in phenolic content were observed between the two Tunisian locations, depending on the extraction method, with generally higher concentrations found in extracts from the southern region. The chemometric analysis confirms the effectiveness of the proposed green extraction methods as powerful and efficient tools for bioactive compound extraction from carob pulp, achieving similar, improved or highly selective phenolic recoveries when compared to the conventional methods.MCIN/AEI/10.13039/50

Positive residential care integration scale: Portuguese adaptation and validation

    No full text
Young people in residential care settings hold distinct preferences regarding their relationships with key adults, including caseworkers and caregivers. However, their perspectives are not consistently assessed or effectively integrated into case planning. Evaluating this integration is essential for fostering positive adjustment and placement stability. Given that residential care represents the predominant child welfare intervention in Portugal, this study adapts and validates an existing instrument for use with youth in residential care institutions, providing evidence of its validity and reliability. Self-report questionnaires-the Positive Residential Care Integration (PRCI) scale (an adapted Positive Home Integration scale) and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire-were administered to 511 youth (279 girls and 232 boys), aged 12 to 24 years, across 46 Portuguese residential care institutions. The study examined the face validity, discriminant validity, and reliability of the PRCI scale. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated good model fit, supporting a unidimensional six-item structure. Correlation analyses demonstrated associations with psychological adjustment and sociodemographic variables. The PRCI scale showed satisfactory psychometric properties, confirming its reliability for assessing youth integration in residential care. Cross-gender measurement invariance was also confirmed. These findings underscore the instrument's relevance and validity for evaluating integration within residential settings and provide valuable guidance for caregivers, professionals, and caseworkers in child welfare services.UID/06317/202

    No full text

The potential risk of bactrocera dorsalis (Tephritidae) invasion into the fruit industry in the iberian peninsula: a review

    No full text
Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel, 1912) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is considered a highly invasive fruit fly species already widespread in Indo-Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. In recent years, this species has extended its range into new regions previously considered unsuitable, posing an alarming new risk for the subtropical regions of Europe. This review aimed to assess the potential risk of B. dorsalis invasion into the fruit industry in the Iberian Peninsula, the southwesternmost tip of Europe. With the collected information from published scientific knowledge on B. dorsalis’s distribution, biology, climatic tolerance, host plant diversity, and recent invasion pathways, we have provided an assessment of the possibilities of introducing this alarming fruit fly species to the Iberian Peninsula. In this review, we found that B. dorsalis has been recently reported in several adjacent European countries such as France, Italy, and Austria, and it serves as a warning signal to the Iberian Peninsula for the possible risks that this species poses in the future. Considering this persistent threat posed by B. dorsalis, we reviewed its potential future threat by considering the status of the fruit industry and Mediterranean climate in the Iberian Peninsula. We also considered the findings of recent climatic forecasting models. This review provides a theoretical basis for the prospective intrusion of B. dorsalis into the Iberian Peninsula’s fruit industry, as well as the potential impact following its establishment, together with recommendations for restricting the introduction and spread

The role of parental perfectionism and child temperament in the intergenerational transmission of perfectionism: a pilot study

    No full text
Background/Objectives: Perfectionism is a personality trait characterised by the setting of extremely high and unrealistic personal standards, accompanied by critical self-evaluations. The literature indicates that perfectionism may develop as a learned behaviour, shaped by parent–child interactions, highlighting the influence of parental, individual and environmental factors. This quantitative study examines how parental perfectionism/practices and child temperament contribute to early perfectionism. Methods: The sample comprised 32 first-grade children (9 girls) from Faro district, aged between five and seven, and their parental figures. Parental perfectionism was assessed using self-report questionnaires, while children’s characteristics were evaluated through a combination of parent-report measures, direct observation, and interview-based methods. Results: Children self-rated higher perfectionism than parents attributed, with modest cross-informant agreement for socially prescribed and negligible agreement for Self-Oriented Perfectionism. Direct parent–child associations were small and method-dependent. Coercive/intrusive parenting corresponded to higher child Socially Prescribed Perfectionism, with convergence between observed intrusiveness and self-reported coercive practices. Temperament showed modest, patterned covariation with parenting and child perfectionism. Notably, Effortful Control attenuated the association between parental and child Socially Prescribed Perfectionism, whereas Surgency/Extraversion and Negative Affect did not; no temperament dimension moderated Self-Oriented Perfectionism. Conclusions: Findings indicate a complex interplay between dispositional and environmental factors in early childhood and underscore the value of multi-informant, multi-method assessment. As a pilot study, these findings provide initial insights into the intergenerational transmission of perfectionism in small children and serve as a basis for generating hypotheses and guiding future research, emphasising longitudinal designs and diverse samples to strengthen validity and clarify intergenerational processes.EDOC/2018/2346

    No full text

    No full text
