An approach to languages of lesser diffusion (LLD) and public service interpreting and translation (PSIT) in Spain in the second decade of the 21st century
Full text linkThe vast diversity of contexts, the immediacy of the required response, and the variety of languages and cultures that converge in today\u27s societies present challenges but also enable a wide range of responses. The main objective of this article is to obtain an overview of the reality of communication with migrant population, especially in lesser-used languages (LLD) in Spain. Three elements will be considered: migrant population in Spain in the second decade of the 21st century, with special attention to LLD; quality of communication between the main service providers (Administration and NGOs) and migrants in LLD; and, the role of technology in communication with migrant population. The methodology used is based on the critical analysis of several studies that approach the issues from different points of view and contexts, and whose results reflect the general situation of the country in relation to LLD.La gran diversidad de contextos, la inmediatez de la respuesta requerida y la variedad de lenguas y culturas que confluyen en las sociedades actuales plantean retos pero también posibilitan un amplio abanico de respuestas. El objetivo principal de este artículo es ofrecer una visión general de la realidad de la comunicación con población inmigrante, especialmente en lenguas de menor difusión (LMD) en España. Se considerarán tres elementos: la población migrante en España en la segunda década del siglo XXI- con especial atención a la LMD; la calidad de la comunicación entre los principales proveedores de servicios (Administración y ONG) y los migrantes en LMD; y, el papel de la tecnología en la comunicación con la población migrante. La metodología empleada se basa en el análisis crítico de varios estudios que abordan las cuestiones desde diferentes puntos de vista y contextos, y cuyos resultados reflejan la situación general del país en relación con la LMD

Full text linkThe article describes the current state of public service interpreting in Finland. The situations where authorities must provide interpreting services and the individual rights of access to interpreting are defined in the national legislation. The legislation on linguistic rights covers the two national languages of Finland, Finnish and Swedish, as well as other languages with a statutory special status, such as the Sámi languages, the Finnish sign languages, and migrant languages. An overview of the languages spoken in Finland and education and the training in public service interpreting is presented as the basis for further discussion in the article.
The article discusses how the statutory right to public service interpreting is implemented in practice. Recent developments and current trends in the domain of public service interpreting in Finland are discussed on the basis of interviews with practising public service interpreters and representatives of associations of interpreters and translators.Este artículo describe la situación actual de la interpretación en los servicios públicos en Finlandia. El marco para que las autoridades proporcionen servicios de interpretación y los derechos individuales a tener acceso a la interpretación están establecidos en la legislación nacional. La ley sobre derechos lingüísticos abarca las dos lenguas nacionales de Finlandia, el finés y el sueco, así como otras lenguas a las que se ha concedido un estatus especial, como las lenguas sami, las lenguas de signos finlandesas y las lenguas de los inmigrantes. Se presenta una visión general de las lenguas habladas en Finlandia y de la formación y capacitación para la interpretación en los servicios públicos como marco para la ulterior discusión en el artículo.
Este artículo trata la forma en la que el derecho a la interpretación en los servicios públicos otorgado por la ley se lleva a cabo en la práctica. Pedagogical challenges in teaching simultaneous interpreting and consecutive interpreting with notes to LLD students in heterogenous groups
Full text linkTo guarantee access to professional interpreting services in the public sector (PSI), institutions and authorities must work together to detect, train, test, and monitor interpreter activity (Giambruno 2014, 96). With the world’s first Interpreting Act (2021) and a relatively long PSI training and monitoring tradition, Norway is a pioneer in this field. This article explores how simultaneous and consecutive interpreting technique is taught at Oslo Metropolitan University. The authors draw on their own teaching experience, ongoing dialogue with colleagues, comments from students and language mentors, and the experiential-dialogic approach to interpreter training (Felberg and Skaaden, 2020) to analyze the challenges of (1) adapting the conference interpreting-centered training tradition to the needs of PSI; (2) dealing with heterogeneous student groups in terms of professional experience and previous qualifications; and (3) teaching heterogeneous language groups with a high presence of languages of lesser diffusion, where students also happen to be market competitors
