    Development of lake conservation

    The city of Bengaluru, once known as the Garden City of India and the City of Lakes, has now transformed into the Silicon Valley of India. This transformation has happened over the last few decades and has caused major changes to the City’s landscape. One if the important issues the city faces today is the scarcity of water. Researchers owe this issue to the depletion of lakes due to high pollution levels, encroachment and dumping of solid waste in the lakes. The neighborhood Bannerghutta is located in the Southern part of Bangalore Metropolitan Region, which is in developing stages and handful of lakes are found and comes under Minor Irrigation Department. The project focusses on Safeguarding the lake and transforming buffers into public recreational areas with functional strips of riparian vegetation. Safeguarding of lake ensures the habited of that area is preserved and protected. The transformation of lake buffer zones into public recreational spaces ensures the area to be free of any buildings that might otherwise be built on this land. Also, bringing in the public into the space would allow increased public involvement in the lakes campaign and would ensure better maintenance of the functional parts of the lake.     Comparison of barriers faced by women in the Australian and Indian construction industry

    ABSTRACT Today’s construction industry has extreme gender stratification that is still traditional in the employment of women. Even though the participation of women in the construction industry has grown, women are still considered as a minority in this field. The industry is considered as male-dominated with low participation of women. The aim of this study is to compare the challenges faced by women construction workers in two different countries: Australia and India. In this context, the study also investigated the level of participation of women in the construction industry and the common challenges faced by women that hinder their participation around the globe. The significant barriers that are faced by women construction workers around the globe are the male-dominated nature and masculine culture of the industry, work-family balance, lack of career progression, longer working hours and the complex workplace culture. When comparing the barriers faced by women in the Indian and Australian construction industry, some of them similar, whereas some are different. The barriers faced by women in Australia are gender stereotyping, lack of awareness, the rigidity of work roles, flexibility issues and changing the family structure. On the other hand, In India, women face barriers such as unequal wages, caste, cultural and religion restrictions, poor sanitary facilities, seasonal work irregularity and health hazards. The research proves that there are many barriers that counteract the participation of women in the industry and thus recommends some measures to improve their involvement.     El giro creativo en el trabajo contemporáneo: una mirada crítica desde las condiciones laborales del campo cultural de Santiago de Chile

    This article explores the foundations of the creative turn in contemporary work, analysing the reasons that have made cultural producers - workers in the art world, the creative sectors and the intellectual field - gain position as model for other productive sectors, within the framework of flexible capitalism transformations. As a counterpart to these celebratory discourses, and based on a qualitative methodological strategy that allowed us to register the practices and discourses of the creative milieu of Santiago de Chile, we will delve into the reverse side of the artistic lifestyle: the precarious working conditions and the invisible subjective costs faced by those who work in these scenes. Based on this empirical survey, this text seeks to contribute to the understanding of the processes of construction of subjectivity in late capitalism. It examines the singularities of a type of activity that contains a paradox: while it becomes a labor model to export to other domains, its productive conditions – its valuation as work – is unknown in various senses and levels.  Este artículo explora los fundamentos del giro creativo en el trabajo contemporáneo, analizando las razones que han ido posicionando a los productores culturales —trabajadores de los mundos del arte, los sectores creativos y el campo intelectual— como referentes para otros sectores productivos, en el marco de las transformaciones del capitalismo flexible. Como contraparte de estos discursos celebratorios, y en base a una estrategia metodológica cualitativa que permitió registrar las prácticas y discursos del medio creativo de Santiago de Chile, ahondaremos en el reverso del modo de vida artístico: las precarias condiciones laborales y los invisibilizados costos subjetivos que enfrentan quienes se desenvuelven en dichas escenas. En base a este levantamiento empírico, este texto busca contribuir a la comprensión de los procesos de construcción de subjetividad en el capitalismo tardío, examinando las singularidades de un tipo de actividad que encierra una paradoja: a la vez que se convierte en un modelo laboral de exportación hacia otros dominios, su condición productiva —esto es, en su valoración en tanto trabajo— es desconocida en diversos sentidos y niveles

    Geospatial Dynamics of Cropping pattern and Agricultural Efficiency in Kashmir Valley-A Northwestern Himalayan Region, India

    Food (in)security and agricultural efficiency is a major challenge in many of the world’s mountain ranges. The particular physical characteristics of mountains and associated socioeconomic factors, mountain regions all over the world face challenges in terms of food security and cropping pattern, although at different levels. Mountains in developing countries are sites of poverty. About 40 percent of the mountain population or nearly 300 million people are estimated to be vulnerable to food insecurity, of these, nearly 90 percent live in rural areas and almost half of those are likely to be chronically hungry. The present study also focuses on the regional disparities in agricultural efficiency and cropping pattern across different tehsils of Kashmir Valley-A north-western part of Himalayas. The study was carried out across thirty-nine spatial units (Tehsils) among different districts of Kashmir valley in GIS and remote sensing environment. Both primary and secondary data was employed. The study shows that the productivity of paddy, maize, and wheat is showing an increasing trend among all tehsils of Kashmir valley from 2011 to 2017 but the area under these crops is decreasing at an alarming rate leading a food deficit of  21.70 percent. So, agriculture planning is badly needed to curb this grave problem and impose restrictions to land conversion a burning issue nowaday

    Bio-Monitoring of airborne fungi and antifungal activity of Clerodendrum infortanum L. against dominant fungi

    The present study provides baseline information on the quantitative and qualitative estimation of aeromycoflora. Burkard personal airsampler and Anderson two stage airsampler were used to detect the quantitative and qualitative estimation of aeromycoflora. 17 non-viable fungal spores were recorded with the aid of Burkard personal airsampler and 12 viable fungal genera were detected using Anderson two stage airsampler. Higher concentration airborne fungi observed in the month of March. Aspergillus sp, Ascospore, Basidiospore, Curvularia sp, Alternaria sp were found to be Nigrospora sp most predominant nonviable fungal genera whereas dominant viable genera were Aspergillus sp, Penicillium sp, Cladosporium sp, Curvularia sp, Trichoderma sp and  Fusarium sp in both the environments. The result of antifungal potential of Clerodendrum infortunatum showed highest efficacy against Aspergillus sp followed by Penicillium sp and Fusarium sp. This present study provided the baseline information about the viable and non-viable concentration in the study sites. Besides the outcomes of this study along with the insightful explanation could aptly provide basis for strategizing effective preventive measures against airborne-fungi.     Nutrient and anti-nutrient composition of processed crayfish (Atya gabonensis) from river Benue, Nigeria.

    The species of crayfish  identified as (Atya gabonensis) along River Benue Nigeria and were captured and analyzed for nutrient and antinutrient content including, proximate composition (crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, ash, and moisture content), as well as vitamin A, Vitamin B components, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, vitamin E, Vitamin K and select mineral concentrations. Additionally, some important antinutrients in crayfish were also examined. The proximate composition showed that moisture content was (9.54%), protein was (7.46%), Crude fibre was (5.60%), fat was (1.57%) and ash was (2.47%) respectively. This was found to be rich in protein and considerably high amount of moisture content. The anti-nutrient composition analysis revealed the presence of Saponin (0.471mg/100g), Alkaloid (3.905mg/100g), flavonoid (0.675mg/100g), tannin (0.017mg/100g), Phytate (0.060mg/100g), Oxalate (0.005mg/100g) and others, all of which are below toxic level. For mineral and vitamin compositions, potassium was significantly (P>0.05) higher than iron, zinc, magnesium, calcium and phosphorus while vitamin C was (4.920mg/100g) which is higher than all other vitamins evaluated. Based on these findings crayfish (Atya gabonensis) is recommended for consumption and for further investigation as a potential raw material for the  pharmaceutical industry.Keywords: Atya gabonensis, Nutrient, Anti nutrient, River Benue,compositio

    Biochemical Studies on edible oysters Crassostrea madrasensis and Saccostrea cucullata.

    n general, changes in biochemical components are closely linked to the state of sexual maturity of the mollusks and to energy supply, either directly from ingested food or from previously stored reserves. Carbohydrates are considered to be the main energy source in adult marine bivalves and are important for gamete formation and maintenance of adult condition during periods of nutritive stress or in winter. Many studies have related changes in the biochemical composition of bivalves with the reproductive cycle mostly in the natural environment. Energy storage and biochemical cycle are closely related to reproductive activity in marine bivalves. The present study indicates that major biochemical constituents in oyster Crassostrea madrasensis and Saccostrea cucullate are significantly influenced by environment condition such as quantity of food availability, temperature and salinity. The high contents of lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and water content values, during summer are indicating this season as the best for harvesting this particular oyster species and the statistical analysis of the biochemical composition of the tissue sample of the oyster revealed positive correlation in both species of oyster Crassostrea madrasensis and Saccostrea cucullata. The strong Positive Correlation were observed in between the two stations and the highest value of protein, carbohydrate and lipids were observed in Crassostrea madrasensis rock and creek when it compare to Saccostrea cucullata.     Nutritional Up-gradation of Some Vegetarian Preparations from Konkan region

    Malnutrition is widespread in India. Even comparatively literate and economically fairly advanced state like Goa is not an exception. Ailments like diabetes, blood pressure, heart diseases and even cancer are on the rise. Other symptoms typically found in cases of malnutrition were also visible amongst the populace of Konkan. Though it cannot be claimed that malnutrition was the sole cause of all these ailments, malnutrition definitely appeared to be one of the causes in many of these cases. In any case malnutrition makes individuals susceptible to diseases. Though a substantial part of the populace had non vegetarian meals, be it the breakfast, proper meal or snack, rice, wheat and coconut together formed almost 80 to 90% of their daily food. A study was conducted with the aim offinding the approximate nutritive value of the various components of the daily food of plant origin and making improvement in nutritive value wherever possible. Substantial amount of data was collected and analysed. Based on the analysis of the data, preparations were modified using 2 prominent traditionally used legumes. Modified preparations were actually cooked, tasted and the increase in the amount of some vital nutrients, in case of some important preparations, was tabulated. This paper reveals the increase/decreasein quantity of each of these vital nutrients as percentage of the quantity present in the original traditional (before modification) preparation.     A feasibility study on calcareous soil stabilization using polymers in Barka region.

    In the Gulf region most of the soils require soil stabilization to increase soil bearing capacity for construction of safe and sustainable buildings. The soils are stabilized either by physical stabilization, chemical stabilization or by mechanical stabilization. The aim of this project is to stabilize calcareous soil in the Barka region with synthetic polymers. The soil samples from the Barka region collected by using standard soil sampling methods. The synthetic polymer was mixed with the calcareous soil in 1%, 3% and 5%. The soil samples were tested for sieve analysis, Atterberg Limit, Particle Density, Proctor test and California Bearing Ratio test before and after addition of synthetic polymer. It was observed that there is a positive impact on the geotechnical properties of soil with the addition of Polymer. The optimum moisture content of the soil reduced and the maximum dry density of the soil increased. The optimum results were found at 5% addition of polymer where the optimum moisture content was found out to be 12.6% and the maximum dry density was found out to be 1.997 Mg/m3. The Atterberg limit test to show that the plasticity index of the soil reduced with the addition of polymer and the optimum results were found out at 5% addition of polymer. Finally, the CBR test results determine that the soil bearing capacity increases with the addition of Polymer. After the addition of 5% Polymer, the CBR value was found out to be 27.465% compared to 14.19% for the fresh calcareous soil. The results are encouraging.
