Exploring the Themes of Conflict and Peace in Contemporary English and Iraqi Drama

    No full text
This research paper explores the themes of conflict and peace in contemporary English and Iraqi drama. The paper analyzes several plays from both traditions to examine the portrayal of conflict and peace, as well as the cultural, political, and historical contexts that inform these portrayals. The paper argues that contemporary drama serves as a powerful means of artistic expression that reflects and responds to the complexities of the world around us. In English drama, conflict and peace are often portrayed as elusive and difficult to achieve. The plays examined in this paper depict a range of conflicts, including those arising from personal relationships, social injustice, and political upheaval. The paper analyzes the causes and effects of conflict in these plays, as well as the ways in which conflict is resolved or perpetuated. The examination of the challenges and benefits of achieving peace highlights the difficulties in achieving resolution and the toll that conflict takes on individuals and communities. In Iraqi drama, the potential for hope and reconciliation is emphasized, even in the most challenging circumstances. The paper examines the causes and effects of conflict in these plays, as well as the ways in which peace is achieved or lost. The examination of the cultural, political, and historical contexts that inform the portrayal of conflict and peace in Iraqi drama emphasizes the significance of Iraq\u27s recent history of war and occupation and the ongoing struggle for social justice and human rights. The paper also identifies similarities and differences between the treatment of conflict and peace in the two traditions. While both English and Iraqi dramas address the complexities of conflict and the difficulties of achieving peace, they do so in different ways. The examination of the cultural, political, and historical contexts that inform the portrayal of conflict and peace in the two traditions highlights the diversity and richness of contemporary drama as a form of artistic expression

Hand and Eye: Study on the Relationship between Painting and Photography from Benjamin\u27s Perspective

    No full text
The birth of printing brought great changes to literature, and the continuous fragmentation of printmaking media allowed pictorial art products to flow into the market. However, no one could have imagined that just a few decades later, the birth of photography would remove the human hand from the main artistic task of image reproduction, which would henceforth be reserved for the eyes staring at the lens. Walter Benjamin, as an early scholar among Western intellectuals in the 20th century, paid attention to the study of the relationship between photography and painting. The Small History of Photography and Works of Art in the Era of Mechanical Reproduction written by him can be regarded as classic works of photographic theory, modern cultural theory and modern art theory. His focus is on the juxtaposition study of photography and painting, two art categories that are both visual image presentation, which is pioneering, original and foundational. Although the paper is not long, the game between symbol and image, politics and economy, and subjective and objective is particularly wonderful. Therefore, it is particularly necessary to dig deeper into Benjamin\u27s theoretical connotation and fully reveal his value in all aspects. The combination of the relationship between painting and photography has also injected impetus into the construction of contemporary visual culture

Grammatical Cohesion in English and Arabic Business Texts: A Contrastive Discoursal Analysis

    No full text
The current study centres around uncovering the functions and types of grammatical cohesion in structuring business texts in English and Arabic newspapers. Unequivocally, it aims to unravel the possible similarities and differences in the English and Arab journalistic registers in terms of grammatical cohesion. Moreover, the study is built on two hypotheses. First, there are differences in the frequencies of grammatical cohesive tools manipulated by English and Arabic writers. Unlike their Arabic counterparts, the English articles tend to involve more realizations of grammatical cohesive patterns. Second, both English and Arabic journalists exhibit a general tendency to take advantage of the same types of grammatical cohesion in their business articles. Ten articles have been selected from The Guardian and Ashareq Al-Awsat newspaper websites as data for analysis. Five articles have been picked from each newspaper. Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) model of grammatical cohesion has been applied to the selected articles in both languages. The results show that reference and conjunction exist profoundly in the two newspapers. On the contrary, substitution and ellipsis have almost disappeared in both corpora

    No full text
This paper explored the cultural and linguistic aspects of health exchanges between healthcare practitioners and patients among the Jukuns of Wukari in Nigeria, within the health centres in the town. It focused on patient-healthcare-provider dynamics and found out how language and culture influenced healthcare communication within formal settings. Integrating ethnographic, sociolinguistic, and anthropological approaches, the study unveiled how language and culture impacted interactions and health-seeking behaviours in these centres. It revealed the roles of language and culture in understanding health information, healthcare provider-patient exchanges, and treatment adherence within the distinct sociolinguistic context of the Jukun. Using such qualitative techniques as interviews and observations in the health centres, the study captured the intricate verbal and nonverbal communication, specific cultural discourse patterns, and communication strategies used by patients and healthcare practitioners. Findings highlighted diverse cultural and linguistic methods employed by Jukuns, such as using proverbs, ironies, metaphors, and nonverbal cues, to express themselves in healthcare settings. The research showed that these methods could facilitate communication with familiar practitioners but might complicate interactions with those from different ethnic backgrounds. Ultimately, it offered crucial perspectives for refining healthcare provision, aligning with the precise linguistic and cultural contexts of the Jukun community within formal healthcare settings in Wukari and other parts of Jukunland. Based on the foregoing, the researchers recommended that health practitioners should make use of interpreters and familiarise themselves with the cultural and linguistic norms of their immediate communities for effective health discourse that would enhance quality healthcare delivery

    No full text
This is a phenomenological study of the victims\u27 views of police misconduct. In data collection, phenomenological interviewing was employed to capture the phenomenon\u27s essence. This study was conducted in Cebu City, Philippines, where the participants were those victims who had experienced police misconduct. These were ten participants who were selected through purposive convenient sampling. The study utilized an interview Guide to elicit in-depth responses from the participants. Extensive interviews were conducted to establish the three stages necessary for data gathering in the survey. The research aimed to explore several areas: the participants\u27 adverse encounters with police misconduct, how they managed these experiences, and the effects of police misconduct on both the participants and their families. Results revealed two themes regarding the participants\u27 negative experiences of police misconduct: Sadists in Uniform: A Deep Threat and Bill of Rights: Gone with the Wind. In coping with the experiences of police misconduct, there were two themes: Silent Outcry for Justice, Keeping in Silence Outcry for Justice, and Forgetting the Pain and Moving On. Regarding the impact of police misconduct on the lives of the participants and their families, two (2) themes emerged: On the Verge of Distrust and Loss of Confidence and Not Being Protected but Disparaged and Prosecuted. It was recommended that police-community relations should be strengthened. This caters to information dissemination in the community, and it is a tool to establish rapport by winning again the trust and confidence of the community. And observance of the rule of law by the police officers greatly affects every common dweller in the community; if these law enforcers respect human dignity and uphold the law of the land, there will be no more police victimization

The Impact of IFRS 9 Compliance on Financial Statement Outputs: An Exploratory Study of a Sample of Commercial Banks

    No full text
The current research aims to adopt Financial Reporting Standards No. (9) using one of the alternatives to accounting measurement (fair value/amortized cost). This approach transforms financial statements into a crucial tool for management to assess financial performance. This application is expected to alter the actual reality of the economic unit, influencing the value of the stock and impacting competitive value in the future. Several statistical tools and equations related to fair value/amortized cost, as outlined in International Accounting Standard 9, were employed. The research yielded several conclusions, with the most significant being that the implementation of the fair value accounting model by the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS9) can lead to results that truly reflect the financial performance and position of the research sample, instilling confidence in the financial statement outputs. After identifying the key conclusions, the research provides various recommendations. Foremost among them is the encouragement for banks to adhere to international financial reporting standards, particularly the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS9). This recommendation stems from the evident importance of presenting financial statements in a manner that accurately mirrors their actual reality

The Recognition, Measurement and Disclosure of Biological Assets of Selected Agritourism Farms in Region IV-A, Philippines

    No full text
The accounting standard for agriculture was introduced to harmonize the accounting procedures of entities engaged in agricultural production. This accounting standard for agriculture specifies the accounting treatment for biological assets and their biological transformation as well as how it must be reflected in the financial statement. However, there has been little awareness of applying the standard, especially in the agritourism industry. Agritourism is a young industry in the Philippines and is seen as a profitable revenue-generating investment. Therefore, education on financial management and recordkeeping must be given importance. This study assessed the accounting practices of selected agritourism farms in Region IV-A, Philippines, in accordance with the Accounting Standard for Agriculture, 41. The International Accounting Standard 41 and Philippine Accounting Standard 41 cover the recognition and measurements of biological assets and the presentation and disclosure of biological transformation. Interviews were conducted with 17 farms and their financial records were reviewed. The results show that most farms do not recognize and measure their biological assets per accounting standards. The recognition and measurement of biological assets are based on their current practices and are not influenced by the provision of the standards. Moreover, the type of business registration, i.e., corporation or sole proprietorship, affects the accounting practice of the farm. Their records do not accurately reflect the presentation and disclosure of biological assets and biological transformation. Thus, it is recommended that training, seminars, and workshops on IAS/PAS 41 must be conducted, and an application guideline must be developed to improve the accounting practices of agritourism farms and their compliance with the accounting standard

The Impact of the Street-Stall Economy on the Quality of Employment in the Informal Economy

    No full text
As a form of informal economy, the street-stall economy has a positive role in providing employment opportunities, but at the same time, there are problems such as low quality of employment and insufficient social security. Therefore, the question explored in this paper is whether the quality of informal economy employment generated by the ground stall economy is an effective job and whether it can be a way for low-income groups to earn a living. In this paper, the composition and proportion of the intangible costs of the stall economy and the average monthly income of the urban low-income group are analyzed to determine whether the informal jobs created by the stall economy can meet the basic needs of the urban low-income group. Taking the average per capital income of the low-income group as the standard, if the stall economy can steadily bring more than the standard net income to the low-income group, it means that the informal jobs created by the stall economy are effective jobs. The study shows that nearly 30% of the vendors in the statistics of the monthly net income of the street-stall economy are unable to reach the average income of the low-income group in the city, indicating that the informal economy jobs created by the street-stall economy are of low quality and are not enough to satisfy the basic living needs of the lowest-income group and that the proportion of effective jobs is low
