Modern Theater between Invisibility and Visibility
No full textThis article employs a theoretical framework that integrates gender, discourse analysis, and psychoanalysis to examine the metaphorical and metonymical construction of sexualities. The focus here is not on the reality of sexualities, but rather on their representation in modern theater. The study findings indicate that psychoanalysis is a valuable tool for interpreting dramatic works and the cultural frameworks underlying them. The psychoanalytic approach offers insights into the motivations and unconscious desires of both authors and characters. Theater has undergone a significant transformation, moving from a realm of shadows to one of light and elucidating the subtle interplay between personal desire and intellectual production. The transition from the state of invisibility to that of visibility on the stage signifies deeper transformations in societal attitudes. These changes have resulted in the acceptance of marginalized identities, particularly those of non-heterosexual orientations, and the evolution of the nature of representation itself
A Model for Alleviating Work Pressures and Enhancing Teachers’ Resilience
No full textTeaching is a complex task that requires knowledge of what to teach, how to teach it, and how to cope with educational challenges. To perform their duties effectively, teachers’ mental well-being and inner states are essential. This study aims to define teacher resilience, give examples of the stressors and challenges that EFL/ESL college instructors face and the factors that lead to attrition and burnout. It also aims to propose strategies for coping with negative stressors. Results of a survey with a sample of EFL/ESL college instructors at five higher education institutions in Saudi Arabia who teach language, linguistics, translation and interpreting courses to undergraduate students showed that they face intellectual, emotional, and service-related stressors and challenges that impact their well-being and effectiveness such as high workload, limited support, meeting deadlines, managing their time effectively, students’ behavior and attitudes, classroom management and health concerns, financial and economic issues, balancing their work and personal, and lack of support and recognition. In addition, some instructors complained of lack of motivation and enthusiasm, fatigue, headaches, irritability, anxiety, depression, and difficulty concentrating. To combat stress, mental and emotional challenges that some instructors face, this study proposes some coping strategies based on the principles of positive psychology to help foster teacher resilience, maintain a strong and effective teaching workforce, and empower educators to thrive in their profession. These coping strategies cover psychological, pedagogical, interpersonal, and pragmatic aspects such as identifying the signs of stress, prioritizing self-care and well-being, setting achievable goals, time management and organization, embracing flexibility and adaptability, adopting a positive mindset, classroom management techniques, advocating for resources and support, attending professional development workshops, building/joining a strong support network, collaborating with other colleagues to share ideas and strategies, reflecting on and assessing their teaching practices, practicing mindfulness, quick relaxation techniques, visualization, progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing, listening to music, regulating emotional responses, and celebrating small wins. The Social Factors of Unity According to the Prophetic Tradition
No full textUnity and solidarity in society are fundamental principles in Islam, strongly emphasized in the Prophetic tradition. This article examines the social factors of unity in society from the perspective of the Prophetic tradition and highlights the role of these factors in creating and maintaining cohesion and integration in the Islamic community. By analyzing the Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), roles such as faith, brotherhood, justice, consultation, cooperation with others, and tolerance are examined.The main question of this research is: What are the social factors of unity in society according to the Proph etic tradition? The present study aims to achieve the main objective: identifying the social factors of unity in society according to the Prophetic tradition. This research is of an applied type and has been conducted using the library method. The statistical population is the Prophetic tradition, and the sample consists of Hadiths related to unity and solidarity. The important findings of this research show that faith, brotherhood, good morals, justice, consultation, tolerance, and cooperation with others play a crucial and fundamental role in creating unity and cohesion in society
A Critical Discourse Analysis of American News Reports on the Opening Ceremony of Beijing Winter Olympics
No full textThe opening ceremony of Beijing Winter Olympic Games in 2022 has been extensively covered in international news reports. Although these news reports seem impartial and objective, they carry underlying ideologies that can influence public opinions and judgments. This paper examined the discursive representation of China in American news reports on the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics using Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis model as the theoretical basis. News stories from American media were collected and analysed in terms of headline, collocation, and quotation pattern. The research found that American news reports present mixed and multifaceted views toward the host country. They showed appreciation for the host country’s success in delivering a spectacular opening ceremony, but they tended to frame China negatively, portraying it as an intimidating power and a geopolitical threat. This study can improve our understanding of the discursive practice of news reports and enhance critical awareness in interpreting news texts
Understanding how Reflective Journal Writing Stimulates Reflective Reasoning: A Literature Review
No full textReflective journal writing is a pedagogical tool commonly used to help English as a foreign language (EFL) students develop and refine their reflective reasoning. Previous research has provided strong evidence in support of the effectiveness of this tool in promoting this mode of reasoning, but much of how it does so remains unclear. These studies do not explain how reflective journal writing enhances reflective reasoning as the focus was on the end-product, that is, on the cause-and-effect relationship. Therefore, more research is required to understand this developmental process and make it clear and explicit. The aim of this paper is to describe and discuss how reflective journal writing makes students engage in reflective reasoning and develop this skill. To achieve this purpose, a narrative review of the literature was undertaken. The analysis of the literature showed that the developmental process of reflective thinking through reflective journal writing occurs by activating and catalyzing reflective reasoning and making this thinking process visible to both educators and students, which is essential for its evaluation and improvement as well. This paper contributes to the understanding of how reflective journal writing stimulates reflective reasoning to inform didactic practices and optimize the outcomes
Research on the Influence of Digital Reading on College Students\u27 Academic Ability -Based on the Investigation and Analysis of S College
No full textDigital reading has become the main mode of reading for contemporary college students. It is meaningful research to actively explore strategies to improve college students\u27 academic ability under the background of digital reading and provide high-quality talent training in colleges and universities. In this study, a mixed method is used to collect data through questionnaires and interviews, which reveals the positive correlation between digital reading and academic writing, information retrieval ability, and critical thinking ability and further confirms the positive correlation between digital reading and college students\u27 academic ability. It is especially found that the frequency of reading academic papers has a significant positive impact on college students\u27 academic writing ability and critical thinking ability. Based on the research results, it is suggested that colleges and universities take corresponding intervention measures to improve students\u27 academic ability, such as academic writing training and information literacy training. The research results can provide a reference for universities to optimize teaching strategies and build a digital reading environment
The Utilization of Instructional Materials in Teaching-Reading of Primary Education Children in Selected Government Schools
No full textThe primary intention of this study is to determine the level of effectiveness of different instructional materials used in teaching reading to primary education children of selected government schools in China. The descriptive research method was employed in this study. Descriptive research, also known as statistical research, describes data and characteristics about the population or phenomenon being studied. Upon approval of the concerned individuals, questionnaires were reproduced and distributed through online forms to the seventy eight (78) teacher - respondents.The researcher used the convenience sampling in choosing the respondents because some teachers in the schools she selected were here classmates and common friends .It would be more convenient for the researcher to collect necessary data if she is acquainted with her respondents. As to effectiveness of different instructional materials commonly used in teaching reading, most of the respondents believed that most of the millennial students are visual learners hence the variety of materials used in the classroom is proven effective in teaching reading
Conditionals in Mandarin: A Corpus-based Study from A Semantic Perspective
No full textThis corpus-based study delves into the expression of conditional constructions in Mandarin Chinese, employing a detailed analysis of both written and spoken data derived from four commonly used Mandarin corpora. Utilizing a mixed qualitative method, the research focuses on four widely-used conditional markers: rúguǒ, jiǎrú, yàoshì, and yàobushì. The investigation aims to understand the syntactic function of these markers in initiating basic conditional statements, as well as to explore their varied use across different genres. The study reveals that while these markers share a common role in forming conditional sentences, they exhibit significant differences in terms of frequency of use and semantic nuances. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of Mandarin syntax and semantics, highlighting the complexity and diversity of language use in different communicative contexts. The findings offer insights into the intricate ways in which Mandarin speakers express conditionality, enhancing the comprehension of this aspect of the language
Magic Realism and Fantastic in Contemporary Literature
No full textMagical Realism and Fantastic are two widely used concepts in contemporary literature. Fantastic is such fiction that blends the realities of our physical world with the supernatural in an indistinguishable manner, with the aim of leading minds of varying abilities on different trails. Both are used in combination to complete the novel. The reader is amazed by the inability to differentiate between real life and the world of fantasy. In Magical Realism, as the name implies, magic, history, fiction and myths are employed. The characters often possess supernatural abilities. It is often mistaken for imaginary realism. The main difference between the two is that in Fantastic, the characters feel shocked and horrified by the happenings, as in Harry Potter’s series, where the sudden disappearance of ‘the mirror’ causes shock. By contrast, in magical realism, the characters tend to react to the occurrence of magic. Another important point is the relation of both to scientific fiction, where events are analyzed on the basis of facts and scientific development in order to enable humans to face life intelligently
The Current Status of Compensation, Support, and Resettlement when the State Acquires Land for Socio-economic Development
No full textMechanisms and policies for compensation, support, and resettlement when the State acquires land for socio-economic development purposes are concretized by the 2013 Land Law, aiming to harmonize the interests of the parties. However, the report from the General Department of Land Management (in 2018) said that the adjusted documents on compensation and support have yet to cover all the problems arising in practice, leading to difficulties and confusion in implementation (Nhan, 2022).In essence, the land acquisition is within the competence of the State; in contrast to the types of assets established on the land, there must be a voluntary mechanism of agreement. In this case, the State should not use its power to impose compensation prices. Although the purpose is to acquire land for economic development, the law empowers the State to decide on the value of land assets, and set on the land is not standard. When comparing the same type of asset, but the value of each place has a difference, there is no uniformity. In many localities, the market price has changed several times but still set meager compensation prices for people. From the above issue, when conducting compensation when the State acquires land for socio-economic development purposes, in any case, it is necessary to correctly and fully calculate the damage caused by land acquisition to the subjects who are using land and assets attached to land, including related intangible and tangible damage. In addition, it is also necessary to delete the support policy because when the damage is fully estimated, there is no need for support-related regulations
