“Every Quiet Step is Thunder to Beetle Life Underfoot”: Redefining the Misrepresentations in Barbara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer
No full textMisrepresentation is providing false information about someone or something, often to deceive or gain an advantage. Fraudulent misrepresentation is one of the most serious forms of misrepresentation, which involves deliberate deceit and can result in the contract being voided and damages being sought. Barbara Kingsolver’s novel Prodigal Summer challenges traditional misrepresentations by emphasizing the interconnectedness of all living beings. With the metaphor ‘Every quiet step is thunder to beetle life underfoot,’ Kingsolver highlights the profound impact of seemingly insignificant human actions on the ecosystem. The first discussion concerns the novel’s female characters, Deanna, Lusa, and Nannie, and how they redefine traditional farming instead of the men, who are often misrepresented as using harmful modern agricultural systems. The second discussion is about how men use the land for commercial purposes. Deanna actively protects natural wildlife, such as coyotes, and maintains domestic animals to support ecological balance. Lusa and Nannie are organic farmers who cultivate their vegetable and fruit land for the benefit of their families. Eddie used to hunt animals, especially coyotes, while Garnett preferred modern agricultural systems for economic gain. However, both actions have an impact on the environment and its beings. Active Models in Speech Perception: A Critical Review in Phonetics
No full textThis critical review examines four prominent active models of speech perception: quantal theory, motor theory, hyper-hypo-articulation theory, and exemplar theory. Each of these models offers distinctive insights into how listeners perceive, interpret, and categorize speech sounds. Quantal theory explores the non-linear relationship between articulation and acoustic output, emphasizing stable and unstable regions in speech production. Motor theory posits that speech perception is grounded in articulatory gestures, suggesting a direct link between production and perception. The hyper-hypo-articulation theory focuses on the speaker’s adaptive articulation, which ranges from hyper- to hypo-articulation depending on the listener\u27s needs and the communicative context. Exemplar theory, rooted in cognitive psychology, highlights the role of memory and experience, with individual speech sounds compared to stored exemplars in memory to aid perception. Despite their contributions, none of these models offers a comprehensive solution to all speech perception challenges. Each theory is suited to specific contexts, speech features, or tasks, making it crucial for researchers to understand their limitations. Furthermore, the review underscores the importance of selecting the appropriate model for particular research or practical applications, given the variability in their functionality. Finally, it calls for future research to delve deeper into passive models of speech perception and suggests that comparative studies between active and passive models could yield valuable insights

Food Availability and Distribution in Farmer Households; The Influence of Socio-Economic Aspects
No full textThe availability and distribution of food for a family is a manifestation of the power relations within a household. The availability and distribution of food for a family is a reflection of power relations within a household. On a wider spectrum, this phenomenon represents relations between countries in the context of food sovereignty. This study aims to look at the socio-economic aspects that influence the availability and distribution of food in the pursuit of food security for farming households. This research was conducted in March - April 2023 in Gowa Regency using a mixed method with a sequential explanatory technique, where this technique begins with quantitative data then, followed by qualitative data. This study involved 53 women as informants selected by simple random sampling. The social aspects used are education, main income earner, and women\u27s position in the household. Meanwhile, to discuss economic aspects, land area and production of agricultural products (rice) are used. The results of this study explain that women who are the backbone of the household economy and are highly educated are seen to be more equitable in food distribution, while women who do not contribute to household income and are positioned as daughters-in-law or other household members are seen to have difficulty distributing food fairly and proportionally. In general, farmer households are not yet at the food security level, which is indicated by the fact that food consumption is dominated by carbohydrates. While the other nutrients, such as protein and fat, needed by the body have not been taken care of

No full textThe study focused on integrating music into physical education for students with special needs as part of a comprehensive school-wide approach. The goal was to determine the influence of music integration on student participation. The study explored methods to enhance motor skills and coordination, and evaluated the viewpoints and experiences of teachers. The study demonstrated that introducing music into physical education can improve student engagement and skill development, particularly for kids with special needs. Music creates rhythm and structure, which improves physical health and motor skills. To get the best results, schools should evaluate the most effective types of music and time. Recommendations include extending music integration programs, tailoring music choices, offering ongoing teacher training, utilizing technology, conducting regular assessments, promoting parent and community involvement, and lobbying for legislation that promotes music integration

This paper, however, finds paradoxically that women are at the basis of their own problems. It shows that they are those encouraging the male being’s domination over themselves through their intra-gender subjugation. Therefore, the paper has made use of Amma Darko’s Beyond the Horizon and Emecheta’s Second-Class Citizen to expose, through the interaction of characters, the cultural and the females’ intra-gender subjugation
On the Translators’ Subjectivity in Forestry Translation
No full textForestry translation is of paramount importance due to the critical role the texts play in advancing forestry research and practice globally. A quality translation ensures that valuable scientific knowledge and technological advancements are accessible to a broader audience, fostering international collaboration and innovation in forestry. The texts in this field, however, are characterized by their specialized terminology, tight syntactic structure, and coherent textual structure, posing significant challenges to translation tasks. These challenges necessitate translators’ subjectivity, which means translators must utilize their essential qualities, like language competence, professional knowledge, and information-searching ability, to ensure that their translated text is not only accurate but also accessible and comprehensible to the target audience. By doing so, the purpose of translation can be achieved to the greatest extent. This essay explores how translators’ subjectivity exerts an impact on the quality of forestry translation. Through a detailed analysis, it concludes that the translators’ subjectivity is pivotal for forestry translation, which can help reduce the misinterpretation and ambiguity of the translated texts by using some translation skills. This paper aims to provide theoretical support and practical guidance for improving the accuracy, accessibility, and adaptability of forestry translation, thus better promoting the advancement of global forestry research and practice and facilitating environmental protection and sustainable development around the world
