Despite the growing use of social media in education, there is limited research on the effectiveness of Facebook Reels in enhancing the viewing skills of English language students. The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Facebook Reels in developing the viewing skills of students. One of the key challenges in teaching and learning viewing skills is that students often lack the necessary skills to interpret visual information effectively, as well as the digital literacy skills to use digital media proficiently. Conducted at a Philippine State University in Libungan, North Cotabato, the research involved 155 English language students as respondents. Descriptive statistics were employed to show the effects of Facebook Reels on enhancing the viewing skills of the respondents. The study utilized adapted questionnaires based on David’s (1986) Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Oxford. The findings revealed that the majority of the respondents occasionally view Facebook Reels. The students had a positive attitude towards using Facebook Reels, finding it to be a fun and valuable tool for learning that is also cost-effective and accessible anytime and anywhere. Additionally, the respondents reported gaining more knowledge and improving their viewing skills after watching the videos. The results indicated that the students\u27 actual performance in using Facebook Reels was average, and notably, the actual performance was higher than the perceived effectiveness in developing their viewing skills. Based on the findings, Facebook Reels is an effective tool for enhancing viewing skills, particularly in understanding grammar lessons such as tenses, modals, and questions. University instructors may find Facebook Reels a valuable educational tool, particularly in teaching grammar

Bayok Sa Kandatu: Stylistic and Content Analysis of Meranaw Poetic Chant

    No full text
Bayok is a spontaneous poetic chant that embodies the Meranaw oral tradition, cultural and social values. Bayok Sa Kandatu is recited at coronations and enthronements ceremonies for Sultan, Datu and Bae-a-Labi. It is held primarily for social entertainment, yet in grand festivities. The language in bayok consists of many layers of meaning. Hence, in this study, the researcher analyzed the bayok using stylistic and content analysis. This study seeks to analyze bayok in phonological and lexical levels, and determine specific elements (i.e., metaphor, imagery, rhyme, code-switching, and rhetorical questions) which attempt to clarify how words connect to the entire system such as analyzing and interpreting language, literature, and culture. Moreover, the researcher analyzed the dominant themes emerging in bayok to see how the structure of a chant can affect its whole meaning. Findings revealed that bayok sa kandatu expresses various alliteration (for phonological level), and metaphors (for lexical level) emerging as the prominent one. The content of the bayok sa kandatu revolves around three (3) main themes: (1) Empathy, (2) Unity, (3) Kinship. Study concludes that elements in the chant have a role in the process of understanding the leadership values embedded in bayok, which serves as a vital function of language as a transmitter of the identity of the Meranaw

Teaching Translation Technology in Jordan Employability and Labor Market

    No full text
Translator training programs worldwide offer translation technology courses to meet the market\u27s growing needs, and translation programs in the Arab world are no exception. Developing ‘technological competence’ should be reflected in the curricula of translator training programs (See, Kenny 2020, Pym and Torres-Simón 2020, O’Brien 2019). However, the focus on technological competence varies across translator training programs around the world. This study aims to pinpoint the importance of technology in MA programs in Jordan. Furthermore, it determines whether technology-connected courses are acknowledged in the program descriptions and objectives. To conduct this study, all the Universities with MA in translation and/or translation and English programs in Jordan were recognized. In addition, a corpus of all MA programs with translation technology courses, course descriptions, and program objectives was also gathered. As a final point, a comprehensive explanation and examination were carried out to recognize technology in MA programs in Jordan. The outcomes of this study indicate that ‘technological competence’ is widely disregarded in the huge mainstream of MA translation programs curricula in Jordan

Collaborative Governance of the Food Security Program in Garut Regency, West Java Province

    No full text
This study aims to analyze the Collaborative Governance of the food security program in Garut Regency, West Java, and to formulate a model for Collaborative Governance in the food security program in Garut Regency, West Java. The theory used to analyze the Collaborative Governance of the food security program in Garut Regency is based on the perspective of Ansell and Gash (2007), which views the collaborative governance process from the dimensions of face-to-face dialogue, trust building, commitment to process, shared understanding, and intermediate outcomes. The research method used in this study is qualitative descriptive, where primary data is obtained through interviews and observations with purposively selected informants, including officers from the Indonesian National Army (TNI-AD) Headquarters and Kodim 0611, Garut Regency Government OPD (Regional Apparatus Organizations), community members, private sector representatives, and academics. The research findings indicate that: 1) Collaborative governance in the food security program in West Java is carried out by the Garut Regency Government, the community that manages agricultural land, the private sector that assists with distribution, seed provision, and the distribution of harvests, and the Indonesian National Army (TNI-AD), which helps provide pumps and supplies irrigation pipes and wells. Collaborative governance in the implementation of the food security program is not yet optimal based on the dimensions of face-to-face dialogue, trust building, commitment to the collaborative process, shared understanding, and intermediate outcomes, which have not been fully implemented; 2) The supporting factors for collaborative governance are the strong commitment from both the central and regional governments, and the significant potential of natural resources and land, while the inhibiting factors include suboptimal coordination among agencies, limited human resources and budget, complex bureaucracy, environmental factors and climate change, and the lack of synchronization between central and regional policies; 3) The researcher formulated the IALS Collaborative Governance Model for Food Security, which is developed from the Ansell and Gash (2007) model, and is believed to optimize collaborative governance in the implementation of food security in Garut Regency. The novelty of the model lies in the need to add the dimensions of legality, accountability, sustainability, and inclusive participation to the collaborative governance model in order to enhance the capacity and involvement of various collaboration actors specifically, and to optimize collaborative governance as a whole.

    No full text
While recent studies have explored the effectiveness of TikTok in second-language (L2) vocabulary acquisition in Western contexts, there remains a significant gap in research on its impact within higher education settings in the Middle East. Addressing this gap, the present study examines the role of TikTok in L2 vocabulary acquisition at the University of Bisha, a higher education institution in Saudi Arabia. This research investigates TikTok’s effectiveness as a vocabulary-learning tool, focusing on its influence on learners’ ability to acquire new words, improve spelling and pronunciation, and develop practical language skills. Findings indicate that students who engage with TikTok daily or are regularly exposed to English-language content acquire vocabulary more effectively than those relying on traditional learning methods. Furthermore, learners who watch TikTok videos in English or with subtitles exhibit accelerated vocabulary acquisition while simultaneously enhancing their pronunciation and spelling skills. The study highlights TikTok’s role in providing exposure to authentic language, including slang, idiomatic expressions, and conversational English, which enhances the relevance of vocabulary learning to real-world communication. Quantitative data reveal that 99% of students reported significant improvements in vocabulary acquisition through TikTok, while only 1% reported minimal learning gains. Despite its pedagogical advantages, challenges such as distractions, misinformation, and overexposure to informal language were identified. However, TikTok’s multimodal and interactive features, such as short-form videos, personalized recommendations, and contextual reinforcement, support vocabulary retention. While concerns regarding content accuracy and structured learning persist, the findings suggest that TikTok serves as a valuable supplementary tool for incidental vocabulary learning. Future research should explore its long-term effects, compare its effectiveness with other digital learning platforms, and develop strategies for integrating it into formal language instruction while mitigating its challenges
