The Interwoven Aesthetics and Identification: On Aesthetic Modernity in Frankenstein
Frankenstein is famous for its exploration of humanity in its bizarre plots, but the importance of this work also lies in its aesthetic modernity, which is revealed under the veil of the complementarity of aesthetics and identification. Based on the relevant theories of aesthetics and modernity, this thesis attempts to analyze the aesthetic connotation and literary expression of Frankenstein from both aspects of content and form and to reveal the aesthetic modernity in this novel. The novel exquisitely depicts the desire and reflection of the created “monster” on beauty and identity, exposes the social ills and humanity defects resulting from Enlightenment modernity in the contradiction between the construction of subjectivity and the modern aesthetic shackles, expands the scope and boundary of sympathy in the switch of multiple narrative perspectives, thus constructing a community of compassion in literary creation. As a result, Frankenstein and its research from the perspective of aesthetic modernity have great literary value and significance
The Stigmatized Linguistic Discourse Used Against Women: Moroccan Films and Sitcoms as Study Cases
The stigmatized language in Moroccan films demonstrates gender attitudes and social conventions when treating gender biases and inequalities. Moroccan cinema, in general, contributes to the reinforcement of traditional gender roles through the use of sexist language and stigmas in dialogues tied within narrative scenes. Sexism in Moroccan films and sitcoms is depicted in several ways, portraying women’s inferiority and submissiveness. Such gender inequalities represent women as primarily responsible for the domestic sphere and removed from public interests. The current research aims to investigate the representations of the stigmatized linguistic discourse used against women by undertaking a study about how the stigmas strengthen social and cultural stereotypes. The research studies the linguistic derogatory terms, gender stereotypes, reification or terms that treat women as sexual objects, and dismissive attitudes and the way they are depicted within cultural norms, along with their effect on cultural perspectives. The study utilizes a mixed approach of selected Moroccan films and sitcoms through the analysis of dialogues, as well as interactions among characters. It aims at discerning the representations of sexist language and the way gender inequalities are maintained. The research data is collected from a variety set of films that treat sexism from different understandings and interpretations and the way language portrays and depicts stigmatized discourses. The data analysis stands up at pointing out various ways in which gendered stereotypes or negative, derogatory terms are used against social groups, typically women. The present research comes up to reveal that these gendered depictions aim at strengthening social biases and cultural recognitions of gender stereotypes. The results unveil salient interrelations between gender representations and the reinforcement of gender biases. The research concludes that Moroccan films and sitcoms play a significant part in structuring prerequisite linguistic stigmas. Through drawing the salient ways in which sexist language is used in films, the research points out the significance of raising awareness through media interpretations of gender discourses. The findings display that the Moroccan cinema and the way its gender discourses are represented reinforce gender portrayals
A Study on the Northern Shaanxi Folk Song Translation from the Perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics
Northern Shaanxi folk songs are an integral part of China’s folk-art heritage, renowned for their simplicity and the deep emotional expression they convey. As a vital component of traditional Chinese culture, the translation of these folk songs necessitates meticulous attention. However, in recent years, there has been a paucity of innovation in the study of northern Shaanxi folk songs, both in terms of research methods and study perspectives. This article aims to address this gap by applying Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to the translation practice of northern Shaanxi folk songs. This article first provides an overview of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), a linguistic framework developed by Michael Alexander Kirkwood Halliday (M.A.K. Halliday). It then utilizes SFL ‘Context’ theory to explore various translation techniques, drawing on appropriate examples from Wang Hongyin\u27s Voices from China’s Northwest. The objective of this research is to facilitate the external dissemination of northern Shaanxi folk songs by applying Systemic Functional Linguistics to their translation. This approach is intended to foster cross-cultural communication and understanding. In conclusion, the author\u27s endeavours and research have yielded novel insights into the practice of translating northern Shaanxi folk songs and have advanced the English translation of folk songs to a modest extent
Requisites of Deradicalisation: Study on the De-Ideologisation of Indonesian Ex-Terrorists
Studies on terrorism in Indonesia heavily emphasize a security-first approach, which has had profound implications for counter-terrorism strategies, policies, and terrorist imprisonment. This approach, however, fails to properly grasp the internal “deep experience” of terrorists. There are currently 289 terrorist convicts serving their prison sentences in 113 Correctional Institutions throughout Indonesia. Until 2017, over 60 convicted terrorists have been documented for recidivist behaviour and repeating their crimes. This phenomenon raises the question of the possibility of de-ideologization of terrorists in incarceration and if Indonesia’s criminal justice system is truly effective in deradicalizing terrorists. Our study explores this question by interviewing three different groups: ex-terrorists who have served their prison sentence, terrorists who were still incarcerated in prison, and former sympathizers of ISIS who had been deported back from Syria to Indonesia. We explored the social elements and actors that constituted their radical view, their experiences in prison, and the factors that had led them to abandon terrorist activities or disavow their support for ISIS. We conclude that social-legal policies aiming to effectively reduce the ideological reproduction of terrorism cannot be carried out using a heavy-handed security approach, but sociological insights are required to grasp the allure and kernel of truth behind terrorist acts
The Impact of Integrating Various Digital Games in EFL Classrooms on Soft Skills Development
It is axiomatic that research in the broader field of educational technology has highlighted the capacity of digital games to engage students actively in the learning process, promoting motivation and facilitating knowledge retention. However, the specific impact of digital games on soft skills development within EFL contexts remains an underexplored area. Hence, this article investigates the impact of integrating diverse digital games into EFL classrooms on the development of soft skills among Moroccan EFL students. This quasi-experimental longitudinal study aimed to investigate the relationship between participation in an online gaming club and the development of soft skills, specifically English communication skills and critical thinking skills, over a six-month period. The hypothesis posited that engaging in online gaming activities would lead to improvements in both English communication skills and critical thinking skills among participants. The findings suggested that engagement in online gaming has a positive impact on the development of soft skills such as English communication skills and critical thinking skills. The study contributes to the broader discourse on innovative pedagogical approaches in EFL contexts, shedding light on the potential of digital games as effective tools for fostering essential skills beyond language proficiency. The implications of the research extend to educators, curriculum designers, and policymakers seeking to enhance the holistic development of students in EFL classrooms
Analysis of Media-Shaped Role Models from the Perspective of Transitivity: A Case Study of Rongzhi Lao Criminal Cases
News reporting is the carrier of ideology and culture. Although the media claims to be impartial, objective and neutral, they necessarily reflect a certain stance. The media usually constructs characters directly or indirectly in news reports so as to change the audience’s perception of the events. Taking the news headlines related to Rongzhi Lao from thepaper as the data, this paper analyzed the role models of Rongzhi Lao shaped by the media from the perspective of transitivity by using the UAM corpus tool and Python. The result shows that (1) in the news headlines related to Rongzhi Lao from thepaper as the data, the material process accounts for the largest proportion, followed by the relational process, mental process, verbal process, and existential process; (2) through the five processes, Rongzhi Lao is constructed as a guilty person who is good at evading his responsibilities and disguising but does not regret committing felonies on his initiative. This paper gives us insight to clarify the purpose of media news reporting by understanding how the media constructs characters
Staging Desire Androgynously: An Alternative Vision of Identity
This article examines the intersection of sexualities and identities, with a particular focus on the ways these elements can be transgressed in Western theater. The study postulates that theater represents a distinctive forum for challenging established societal structures, thereby enabling actors and, by proxy, spectators to perform multiple identities that challenge conventional constraints and break traditional expectations. The research demonstrates the dynamic nature of identity formation on the modern stage, illustrating that identity can both reflect societal norms and serve as an alternative to them. This allows for the expression of diverse sexual identities that deviate from the heteronormative order. Consequently, the theater becomes a site for subverting conventional codes and for negotiating with mainstream society the potential for exploring a plethora of non-standardized identities. This process culminates in the crystallization of norm-divergent gender identities
The Impact of Smartphone Usage Patterns on Health and Other Aspects of Life Post-Covid Pandemic
Smartphone usage is still increasing worldwide. Life seems impossible without them as almost all activities are performed through these gadgets. Many studies have demonstrated the pattern of smartphone usage before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in teenagers and students. To observe the smartphone usage pattern and its impact on various aspects of life post-pandemic, an online survey was conducted through a questionnaire covering the demography, pattern of smartphone usage, and impact of smartphones on health, social life, and family life. The results were analysed statistically. A total of 528 responses from people, mostly from north India, with a mean age of 33.60±11.50 years, were collected, and 54.7% were residing in nuclear families. Occupation-wise, the maximum number of participants was professionals (32.4%), followed by 25.2% of students. Many young children (36.3%) also had their own smartphones. People agreed that phone usage caused poor academic performance (59.6%) and obsession with online shopping (44.3 %). Significant association(p<0.05) was observed between smartphone usage and increased BMI, physical symptoms (finger/hand pain, back pain, general fatigue, vertigo, lack of physical activity), and psychological symptoms (craving for phone use, nomophobia, poor quality sleep). Post Covid, smartphone usage increased among all age groups. Overuse of smartphones is a double-edged sword and may cause physical as well as psychological ailments. It is important to raise awareness about the mindful use of smartphones by setting boundaries and finding ways to do that

The ability to maintain the charcoal panglong business and its business existence. A series of research studies using a qualitative approach, using interviews and observations, were conducted by the author to reveal a series of strategic action fields in the forestry business. The findings obtained show that challengers have always competed with incumbents (mangrove forest policies and regulations) and governance units for a long time. This field contestation has occurred since 1853, starting from the time the Dutch government established a panglong in Bengkalis to meet the demand for wood and charcoal from Singapore and Malaysia. The challenger always maintains its business existence by fulfilling all obligations as a holder of a community forest license granted by the president and also as a charcoal export license holder to Malaysia; of course, to meet these export needs, another skill it has is maintaining a stable supply of charcoal for export. The patron client relationship is one of the challenger\u27s skills in maintaining good relations with the local community and its workers. The market field analysis using Fligstein and McAdam\u27s Field Theory of Strategic Action Field (SAF) helps explore the elements of social skills in SAF so that the structure of stability and change in the forestry charcoal panglong business arena can be illustrated more clearly
