Investigating Language Learning Strategies Among Moroccan Learners: A Quantitative Study
This study explores the intricate relationship between English proficiency and the use of language learning strategies among Moroccan students. We analysed responses from 126 Moroccan design students’ use of language learning strategies employing the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL). The findings highlight a significant effect of improved proficiency on language strategies’ adoption, with more proficient learners using these strategies at higher frequency, particularly metacognitive, cognitive, and compensation strategies. Interestingly, affective strategies exhibited a curvilinear relationship, plateauing at moderate proficiency. The study underscores the importance of tailoring language instruction and curriculum design to help improve Moroccan students’ English proficiency, especially when English is increasingly becoming popular. Our study is a part of a larger attempt that aims to investigate language proficiency differences between Moroccan students as a first step to democratize language learning.

Analysis of Speech Act Performance in Four Khmer-Language Online Newspapers: Content related to Coronavirus or Covid-19 pandemics
This paper reports on research conducted to identify the speech act performances in articles in four Khmer-language online newspapers covering the Coronavirus or Covid-19 pandemic in Cambodia. John Searle\u27s (1975) speech act theory has been adopted as the primary framework for categorizing speech act performances. Two datasets were collected approximately six months apart (23-29, 2020 January and 23-29 July 2020). Overall, the most frequent type of illocutionary speech act in both the headlines and the body text of the articles was the assertives. Notably, an increasing frequency of directives type speech acts was discerned in the later dataset (July 2020) in the body text of the articles especially. The study, we believe, further highlights the potential usefulness of the application of Searle\u27s speech act framework in analyzing public health media content and accords well with relevant earlier findings established by Al-Hidawi & Ali (2018) and Qomariyah (2019)

Metadiscourse Across Discourses: A Cross-Cultural Review of Current Trends and Future Directions
This paper provides a cross-cultural review of metadiscourse research, focusing on its application and development in academic discourse, media discourse, and business discourse. As a linguistic tool, metadiscourse helps authors organize text content and interact with readers, reflecting the author’s stance and discourse structure. The paper reviews early definitions of metadiscourse and its theoretical development, particularly Hyland\u27s interpersonal metadiscourse framework, and analyzes the use of metadiscourse across different discourse types. The study finds that the use of metadiscourse in academic discourse varies significantly across disciplines, while media discourse shows significant cross-cultural differences. In business discourse, metadiscourse is primarily used to construct corporate image and engage with the audience. Additionally, the paper explores metadiscourse research from a cross-cultural perspective and discusses metadiscourse adaptation in translation studies. Finally, the paper identifies gaps in current research and suggests that future studies should further explore the role of metadiscourse in digital media and multimodal discourse

Narrative Theory and the Refugee Crisis in The Beekeeper of Aleppo: The Authority of Storytelling
This paper examines the application of narrative theory to Christy Lefteri\u27s 2019 novel The Beekeeper of Aleppo, with an emphasis on how the structural elements of the narrative; plot, characters, and settings, improve our knowledge of the portrayal of refugee experiences, trauma, and identity. Influenced by significant concepts from narrative theory, including the works of Ryan (2006), Herman et al. (2010), and Rimmon-Kenan (2003), this study explores how Lefteri\u27s narrative structure captures the fractured and horrific characteristics of displacement. The study emphasizes the non-linear plot, intricately developed characters, and evocative setting of the work that together humanize the refugee experience and contest dominant discourse. The study bridges narrative theory and refugee literature, revealing how the role of storytelling is more than just a literary device, but a means of political and social commentary. This study enriches both literary narratology and refugee studies by critically analyzing how narrative structure influences perceptions of forced migration
Bridging Theory and Practice: E-learning Strategies for Strengthening Critical Reading
Critical reading is that kind of reading which takes the reader beyond and beneath the surface meaning of what is written to the assumptions, arguments, and strategies behind them. The current study took place at Faculty of Education, Minia university, Egypt trying to explore the effectiveness of a blended e-learning program in improving English majors\u27 critical reading skills. A sample from third year English majors consisting of 60 students were randomly assigned to two groups: a treatment and a control one, each consisting of 30 students. The treatment group was trained in a Blended E-Learning program based on genre discourse analysis, whereas the control group was taught the same content in a “Discourse Analysis” course through the conventional method of teaching. Tools of the study included two questionnaires, a Blended E-Learning training program, two pre-post-tests in the acquisition and use of critical reading skills, and the English Proficiency Examination for Egypt (EPEE). Equality between the treatment and the control groups was ensured by using t-value to analyze differences between the two groups on the control variables. The present study followed quasi-experimental research in an exploratory sequential mixed methods design. The treatment group and the control group were exposed to pre-post means of getting data. The treatment group was only instructed and trained through a Blended E-Learning program. The treatment lasted for one academic semester, six hours a week. Analysis of quantitative data obtained by students using (t-test - Point Biserial Correlation Coefficient - Pearson Correlation - Eta-Squared) and the sematic analysis of qualitative data revealed that the treatment group significantly surpassed the control group on the post tests of the acquisition and use of critical reading skills. Discussion of these findings, recommendations and suggestions for further research are presented
The Representation of the Moroccan Sahara in El Moudjahid Discourse: A Critical Study
This study employs Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) to analyse the news discourse of El Moudjahid and explore how political narratives and legitimacy are embedded within the deep structure of news discourse, specifically to legitimize Algeria’s support for the Polisario Front’s territorial claims against Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. The research investigates how media discourse remains a powerful tool for propaganda under the control of the Algerian government. The study emphasises the imperial hubris of Algerian political and military elites, who utilize media as an extension of state power to obscure the motives behind separatism and expansionism. In this context, El Moudjahid functions not only as an information source but also as an instrument for ideological manipulation, ensuring that the Polisario Front’s claims are portrayed as historically and naturally legitimate, while systematically delegitimizing Morocco’s sovereignty. The research examines a key article from El Moudjahid that reports on France’s recent policy shift regarding the Western Sahara issue and Algeria’s subsequent reaction. To deepen the analysis, the study incorporates additional sources, including the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion on Morocco’s historical ties with the Sahrawi population. This approach provides access to the universe of discourse related to a geopolitical controversy that has persisted for 50 years. The combination of sources highlights how discourse in news stories or legal statements is not an unquestionable truth or fact; rather, it can be corrupted, distorted, or manipulated, with facts, events, and history undergoing similar illegitimate processes. Thus, as power intersects with discourse, language ceases to function merely as a communicative tool and instead becomes a mechanism of control, manipulation, and power abuse
