    A combined chemical and ecotoxicological approach to assess nature-based solutions efficiency in removing pharmaceuticals using microcosms

    Pharmaceutical products (PP) are considered contaminants of emerging concern, and their discharge into the environment has increased due to both, human and veterinary use. These drugs entered freshwater ecosystems and remain physiologically active, posing potential negative effects on aquatic ecosystems. As conventional plants for wastewater treatment are not designed to remove most of these micropollutants, the development of strategies for sustainable management is essential and nature-based solutions (NBS) will be useful in removing pollution, simultaneously benefiting people and nature. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of PP removal of different NBSs implemented at a microcosm scale from chemical and ecotoxicological points of view. Proposed NBSs were based on floating wetlands with improvements based on the use of biochar and bioaugmentation (biofilm coating). The proposed NBSs were able to reduce up to 90 % of the total PP concentration after the whole experimental period (42 days). However, considering a regular hydraulic retention time (7 days), the higher PP removal rate (55 %), took place in the microcosms with floating wetlands enhanced with biochar (FWB), followed by the floating wetlands enhanced with biofilm-coated biochar (FWBB) (51 %) and the floating wetland (FW) (42 %). The selected NBS (FWB) has also been assessed through the toxicological approach, and the acute and behavioural effects of the wastewater were also reduced after 7 days. The proposed solution will benefit both nature and society, reducing PP pollution and enhancing water resource quality. The results obtained with the ecotoxicological approach highlight the relevance of considering the toxic cocktail, as a whole, in environmental risk assessment and the use of behavioural biomarkers for spotlighting its ecological consequences.This study was supported by the Ministerio de Transici´on Ecol´ogica (Spain) project (TED2021-129910B-I00); cofounded by the Next Generation European Fund.     ALTERACIONES NEUROLÓGICAS Y VISUALES EN LA ESCOLIOSIS IDIOPÁTICA

    RESUMEN EN CASTELLANO La escoliosis idiopática (EI) es una patología muy prevalente a nivel mundial. Sin embargo, su etiología es desconocida lo que limita los abordajes terapéuticos y el correcto manejo de los pacientes. Hay indicios de que el sistema visual y el sistema nervioso podrían estar relacionados con el origen de la deformidad. A través de este trabajo de investigación, se ha demostrado que la prevalencia de escoliosis es casi tres veces mayor en sujetos con trastornos de la visión que en controles visualmente sanos. Además, la prevalencia de NAAs (neural abnormalities axis) es mayor en sujetos con escoliosis de lateralidad atípica y en sujetos con escoliosis de inicio temprano (EIT). RESUMEN EN INGLÉS Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is a highly prevalent condition worldwide. However, its etiology is unknown, limiting therapeutic approaches and proper patient management. There are indications that the visual and nervous systems may be involved in the origin of the deformity. This research has shown that the prevalence of scoliosis is almost three times higher in subjects with vision disorders than in visually healthy controls. Furthermore, the prevalence of NAAs (neural axis abnormalities) is higher in subjects with atypical laterality scoliosis and in subjects with early-onset scoliosis (EOS)

    Impact of distributed generation on the stability and operation of electric power systems: analysis of scenarios including energy storage systems

    The transition from centralized to decentralized power generation presents a significant opportunity to enhance grid resilience and energy independence, particularly in regions with unstable grids or vulnerability to natural disasters. Distributed Generation (DG), particularly solar photovoltaics, has become a key component of modern power systems, especially in distribution networks. However, its increasing penetration at both utility and distributed levels poses challenges related to voltage, frequency, and angular stability, requiring advanced monitoring and control strategies. In this context, energy storage systems (ESS) emerge as a crucial player, playing a significant role in mitigating these challenges. ESS stabilizes power supply fluctuations and enhances grid reliability, providing a safety net for the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. This study examines the impact of DG on the stability and operation of the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI) of the Dominican Republic, with a focus on integrating ESS at both utility and distribution levels. Using DIgSILENT, future scenarios (2027) with high renewable penetration were simulated. The methodology included data collection, modeling of actual automatic load shedding (EDAC) events from 2024, and the simulation of three scenarios: without storage, with utility-scale storage, and with both utility-scale and distributed storage. The results indicate that energy storage systems (ESS) significantly enhance system stability, reducing both the total disconnected load and the number of EDAC steps. In the absence of storage, 640 MW were disconnected; with utility-scale storage, this was reduced to 540 MW, and the addition of distributed storage further decreased the disconnected load to 440 MW while also delaying EDAC activation times. Findings highlight the critical need for ESS investments and grid flexibility mechanisms to accommodate increasing renewable penetration, particularly in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Future research should optimize ESS deployment and conduct detailed economic analyses to support the development of sustainable power systems

    RESUMEN EN CASTELLANO El presente trabajo es un estudio experimental de células fotovoltaicas multiunión de tipo III-V, empleadas en sistemas de concentración fotovoltaica, operando a ultra alta concentración (UHC) y bajo diferentes temperaturas y condiciones espectrales. Para tal fin, se ha desarrollado y validado un set-up experimental basado en un simulador indoor multi-flash, que ha permitido obtener curvas I-V entre 1500 y 2200 suns, con temperaturas de la célula de entre 25 y 85 oC, y en distintas condiciones espectrales. Se presentan los resultados experimentales inéditos y las conclusiones del análisis del impacto de la temperatura y del espectro de la radiación sobre los parámetros eléctricos de las curvas I-V (voltaje de circuito abierto, corriente de cortocircuito, factor de llenado y eficiencia) en dicho rango de irradiancias. RESUMEN EN INGLÉS The present work is an experimental study of III-V multi-junction photovoltaic cells, used in concentrator photovoltaic systems, operating under ultra-high concentration (UHC) conditions and at different temperatures and spectral conditions. For this purpose, an experimental setup based on a multi-flash indoor simulator has been developed and validated, enabling the acquisition of I-V curves between 1500 and 2200 suns, with cell temperatures ranging from 25 to 85 oC, and under various spectral conditions. The study presents unprecedented experimental results and conclusions from the analysis of the impact of temperature and the radiation spectra on the electrical parameters of the I-V curves (open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, fill factor and efficiency) within this irradiance range

    Series compensated low frequency transformers emulating multipulse rectifiers for bharmonic current content minimization in electrical grids

    This paper explores the use of series compensated low frequency transformers (SCLFT), operating in parallel to traditional low frequency transformers (LFT), to attenuate harmonic distortion caused by nonlinear loads in electrical networks. The proposed strategy achieves harmonic cancellation through a controlled phase shift between the SCLFT and LFT voltages, emulating the behavior of multi-pulse transformers. By integrating power converters into the LFT, the SCLFT’s operation is optimized to maximize system efficiency and implement a robust control algorithm for precise output voltage regulation. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated through hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations and experimental testing, demonstrating a significant reduction in current harmonic distortion. These results position series-compensated SCLFTs as a viable solution for enhancing power quality in distribution grids. This technology offers a promising alternative to modernizing electrical infrastructure and paves the way for future applications in microgrid optimization and large-scale distribution systems

    Energy-Efficient Eimeria Parasite Detection Using a Two-Stage Spiking Neural Network Architecture

    Coccidiosis, a disease caused by the Eimeria parasite, represents a major threat to the poultry and rabbit industries, demanding rapid and accurate diagnostic tools. While deep learning models offer high precision, their significant energy consumption limits their deployment in resource-constrained environments. This paper introduces a novel two-stage Spiking Neural Network (SNN) architecture, where a pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network is first converted into a spiking feature extractor and then coupled with a lightweight, unsupervised SNN classifier trained with Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity (STDP). The proposed model sets a new state-of-the-art, achieving 98.32\% accuracy in Eimeria classification. Remarkably, this performance is accomplished with a significant reduction in energy consumption, showing an improvement of more than 223 times compared to its traditional ANN counterpart.     El Orff-Schulwerk en España a través de sus divulgadores

    Los profesionales vinculados al Orff-Schulwerk en España han tenido pocas oportunidades de contar esa parte de su vida en el ámbito académico. Sus testimonios son clave para reconstruir procesos de circulación y recepción de metodologías musicales activas desde sus contextos de gestación hasta los diferentes territorios en los que han conseguido adoptarse y desarrollarse. Este trabajo pretende ofrecer una panorámica de diversos aspectos del Orff-Schulwerk en España desde la percepción, vivencia y narrativa de especialistas que tuvieron y siguen teniendo un destacado papel en la difusión e implantación de dicha propuesta pedagógica. Para ello, se ha optado por una investigación de corte cualitativo, basada en una entrevista biográfica fuertemente estructurada, validada por expertos, realizada a 24 sujetos. La información obtenida por medio de este instrumento se ha codificado en ocho categorías en las que se abordan temas como la formación en el método y las becas obtenidas, la propia conceptualización de la propuesta, el apoyo de la política estatal, las fortalezas y debilidades en su aplicación o su prospectiva, entre otras. Gracias al análisis realizado, se consigue un trabajo en profundidad del que emergen nombres propios, opiniones, críticas y anécdotas que no aparecen recogidos en otros trabajos. El cruce y contraste de los diversos puntos de vista permite profundizar en el proceso de llegada y expansión del Orff-Schulwerk a España. Asimismo, se constata la extensa red humana conformada en torno a este enfoque pedagógico y sus principales circuitos en el ámbito nacional. En última instancia, se hace patente la continua lucha de sus agentes para que la educación musical en general y, de forma particular, el Orff-Schulwerk sigan ocupando un lugar importante dentro del sistema educativo español que, con frecuencia, ha descuidado o instrumentalizado las enseñanzas artísticas

    Strategies for the transformation of electrical energy systems based on fossil fuels into 100% renewable structured systems

    RESUMEN EN CASTELLANO América Latina y el Caribe es una región que ha crecido enormemente en políticas públicas, las energías renovables están experimentando un rápido crecimiento. Sin embargo, en la mayoría de casos sus esfuerzos están desarticulados y carecen de planes de acción a largo plazo. El reto de la presente tesis es crear las líneas generales para brindar las estrategias hacia una transición energética ordenada y que pueden ser de referencia para estos mismos territorios y para otras partes del mundo. Esta investigación analiza varios casos de estudios en la región latinoamericana y del Caribe que están siendo actualmente dependientes de combustibles fósiles y se brindan las hojas de ruta para lograr la transición energética a largo plazo con el 100% de energía renovable diversificada. Entre los estudios abordados se analizan los escenarios energéticos a largo plazo a nivel de regiones, países, islas y ciudades. En líneas generales, las tecnologías llamadas a incidir en el futuro sistema eléctrico en los distintos territorios a más de la histórica hidroeléctrica están la solar fotovoltaica y eólica. RESUMEN EN INGLÉS Latin America and the Caribbean is a region that has grown enormously in public policies, renewable energies are experiencing rapid growth. However, in most cases their efforts are disjointed and lack long- term action plans. The challenge of this thesis is to create general guidelines to provide strategies for an orderly energy transition that can be a reference for these same territories and for other parts of the world. This research analyzes several case studies in the Latin American and Caribbean region that are currently dependent on fossil fuels and provides roadmaps to achieve a long-term energy transition with 100% diversified renewable energy. The studies undertaken analyse long-term energy scenarios at the level of regions, countries, islands and cities. In general terms, the technologies that will have an impact on the future electrical system in the different territories, in addition to the historical hydroelectric technology, are solar photovoltaic and wind energy
