No full textThis theme issue examines the slow evolution of regulatory frameworks on the use of pesticidesat both national and international levels by looking at the political and societal dynamicsthat drove regulation attempts or opposition to regulation. Bringing together scholars fromhistory and the social sciences, the issue compares case studies from different countries andregions and across different time periods, from Francoist Spain in the mid-twentieth centuryto democratic Norway in the late twentieth century, and from an international organizationbased in France in the 1970s and 1980s to a contemporary cardamom plantation in southernIndia. The theme issue shows that paths towards regulation of pesticides over the course of thetwentieth century differed wildly across national contexts, and were strongly dependent onpolitical, economic, technological, but also ideological factors. Engaging with different perspectives,scales, and actors helps us understand that the slow regulation of pesticide use was notthe result of a lack of knowledge or lack of coordination, but the result of conflicting interestsacross different political systems, actors, and regions.In diesem Themenheft wird die langsame Entwicklung der rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungenfür den Einsatz von Pestiziden auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene untersucht. Es werden politische und gesellschaftliche Dynamiken betrachtet, die die Regulierungsversuche oder denWiderstand gegen die Regulierung vorantrieben. Die Ausgabe bringt Wissenschaftler aus denGeschichts- und Sozialwissenschaften zusammen und vergleicht Fallstudien aus verschiedenenLändern und Regionen und über unterschiedliche Zeiträume hinweg, vom franquistischenSpanien in der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts bis zum demokratischen Norwegen im späten 20.Jahrhundert und von einer internationalen Organisation mit Sitz in Frankreich in den 1970erund 1980er Jahren bis zu einer zeitgenössischen Kardamom-Plantage in Südindien. Das Themenheftzeigt, dass die Wege zur Regulierung von Pestiziden im Laufe des zwanzigsten Jahrhundertsin den verschiedenen nationalen Kontexten sehr unterschiedlich waren und stark vonpolitischen, wirtschaftlichen, technologischen, aber auch ideologischen Faktoren abhingen.Die Beschäftigung mit verschiedenen Perspektiven, Maßstäben und Akteuren hilft uns zu verstehen,dass die langsame Regulierung des Pestizideinsatzes nicht das Ergebnis mangelndenWissens oder mangelnder Koordinierung war, sondern das Ergebnis widersprüchlicher Interessenzwischen den beteiligten Akteuren in verschiedenen politischen Systemen und Regionen
