Insgesamt kann man den Band als globale 
Einführung in die Geschichte des moder-
nen Nationalismus durchaus empfehlen, 
auch wenn sicher viele Leser nicht mit 
allen Einschätzungen des Autors d’accord 
sein werden. Dazu ist eben die Geschichte 
des Nationalismus bis heute viel zu kont-
rovers und spannungsreich diskutiert wor-
den, was aber nach wie vor den Reiz dieses 
Forschungsfeldes ausmacht.

Maybe Karl Marx was right, after all. De-
fects as a prophet undermined confidence 
in his critique of capitalism. When the 
revolutions he predicted failed to occur in 
highly industrialized economies, it looked 
for a while as if capitalism’s capacity for 
self-correction was as great as its apolo-
gists claimed. Bosses heeded dangers, re-
strained exploitation, and boosted wages 
to increase their own markets. After the 
first decade or so of the twentieth century, 
living standards began to converge. Em-
bourgeoisement of proletarians and prole-
tarization of bourgeois eased class conflict. 
Social democratic modifications of capital-
ism made the system easier to live with. 
Revolution receded because, as William 
Cobbett said, you cannot “agitate a fellow 
with a full stomach”.[1]
In the last 40 years or so, however, ex-
pectations of indefinite social peace have 
weakened. Wealth gaps have widened to 
levels unexperienced since before the First 
World War. Greed has become “good”. 
As Thomas Piketty shows, the decades of 
convergence in the twentieth century were 
the result not of the benevolence of the 
master class but of war, driving up wages 
and increasing regulation.[2] Meanwhile, 
economic growth, which provides the 
modern equivalent of bread and circuses, 
has come to look unsustainable, as madcap 
consumption threatens resources, pollutes 
the planet, and aggravates climate change. 
Problems of controlling climate and dis-
ease seem to demand more regulation of 
what Étienne Girard calls “spiralling de-
sire”.[3]
Fabian Scheidler is among writers who 
have described this new crisis of capital-
ism with minatory glee. Part of his object 
is to denounce a “system” he deems “crazy” 
and “sick” (p. 3); a further part, less con-
sistently foregrounded, is to hear “voices 
drowned by the megaphone of power” (p. 
4). He warns that current practices con-
demn the world to conflict and ecological 
disaster (p. 6). So far, so familiar.
Less convincing are his attempts to place 
current problems in a millennia-long con-
text and, more particularly, to blame Eu-
ropean expansion for current woes. Em-
pire bashing is a popular sport but, like 
others (say bear baiting or cock fighting), 
lacks both subtlety and moral authority. 
Empires, Scheidler avers, have been “as-
sociated with expulsion, impoverishment,

destruction of environments and mas-
sive violence” (p. 5) – which is true of all 
methods of political organization and, in 
any case, does not necessarily mean that 
the evils of capitalism are attributable to or 
congruent with European outreach.
It is not clear why Scheidler starts his nar-
rative of decline with the Bronze Age. His 
ignorance of the period subverts readers’ 
confidence: “hierarchy” did not “begin” 
(p. 14) then, nor were earlier configura-
tions “far more democratic” than anything 
since (p. 208). Scheidler’s characterization 
is based on “structural violence” under 
“dominating gods”, facilitated by a sup-
posed popular submissiveness (pp. 17–31). 
Even if this caricature were valid, it would 
make nonsense of the logic of Scheidler’s 
claims that “the modern world-system” (p. 
85) is responsible for the ills of the world.
 Professional historians are unlikely to ac-
cept responsibility for “a reconstruction 
from the perspective of growth”, from 
which Scheidler regards Howard Zinn as 
the only exception honourable enough 
to mention (p. 59). Such a rebuke seems 
impertinent from a writer apparently un-
concerned with getting his facts right. He 
is cavalier about subjects he dislikes, in-
cluding Judaism and Christianity. Daniel 
was not “thrown into a fiery pit”, nor is 
the book attributed to him intelligible as 
“an attempt to compensate for powerless-
ness and humiliation” (p. 66). Scheidler’s 
assertion that the Apocalypse “contradicts 
the main goals of the Jesus movement” is 
typically insensitive (p. 71). It is untrue 
that “none of the authors of the gospels” 
– which are composite works incorporat-
ing traditions of long standing when the 
current state of the texts was defined – 
“ever met” Christ (p. 71). Jesus, we hear, 
was “possibly illiterate” (p. 71): anything 
is possible, but the evidence suggests the 
opposite. Paul was indeed an innovator 
but did not turn “almost everything the 
Jesus movement stood for on its head” (p. 
77). Rather, Paul was a faithful formulator 
of Christ’s doctrine of grace. St Boniface’s 
mission was not “to the peoples of Central 
Europe”, nor did he “send in troops” (p. 
79). Sepúlveda was not “a theologian” and 
did not “justify genocide” (p. 79). Bacon’s 
and Campanella’s were by no means “vi-
sions of total despair” (pp. 63–65). The 
persecution of witches did not “follow up 
on the Inquisition” (p. 119).
On secular topics, Scheidler is hardly more 
reliable. He knows little of the early mod-
ern world, where his analysis of the origins 
of “an economy that aims for capital, com-
peting states with centralized armies, and 
an ideology touting expansion” (p. 85) is 
focused. Ottoman conquest of Constan-
tinople, for instance, did not “block the 
Asian trade routes” (p. 112). Hobbes said 
the exact opposite of what Scheidler claims 
(p. 149): the sovereign was the beneficiary 
of, but not party to, the contract the phi-
losopher postulated. The suspension of 
Zheng He’s voyages did not “signal the end 
of Chinese expansion” (p. 151). Chris-
topher Columbus, on whom Scheidler 
seems to share Zinn’s delusions, was not a 
“pirate”, nor did he think “he had reached 
India by 12th October, 1492”, nor did he 
kidnap “500 men” on his first voyage, nor 
did he chop off the hands of his victims, 
nor did he say most of the things Scheidler 
attributes to him (p. 113). Our author ex-
ercises no critical judgement or restraint in 
caricaturing the Reconquista (which was 
a slow and fitful business with Muslims 
and Christians normally in alliance) or the

Spanish monarchy in the Americas (which 
was a native and Spanish condominium 
with constructive as well as destructive 
features) (pp. 113–116, 193). 
The litany of errors continues in 
Scheidler’s account of more recent times. 
What credence can one attach to a writer 
who thinks that Glasgow “became rich” 
through slaves (p. 168)? Or that national-
ism was a consequence of industrialization 
(p. 184)? Or that “the birth of fascism” 
occurred after the First World War? Or 
that the atom bomb was “the fulfilment of 
Francis Bacon’s vision” (p. 239)? Or that 
the movie Jaws “fulfilled an important 
ideological function by preparing […] for 
a world of total competition” (p. 268)? Or 
that pandemics are “a consequence of the 
colonial domination project” (p. 319)? 
Who can take seriously Scheidler’s admira-
tion for “the world revolution of 1968” (p. 
255) or his denunciation of Mickey Mouse 
and Aunt Jemima as agents of capitalist 
propaganda (p. 244) or his praise of the 
Gaia Hypothesis as “scientific” (p. 261)?
What of his proposed solutions? At times 
he puts his faith in “resistance” (p. 288), 
at others in delightfully old-fashioned 
anarchism: communal “self organisation” 
by citizens who must “take matters into 
their own hands” (pp. 288, 296). He has 
a touching affection for democracy, appar-
ently unaware of the invincible popularity 
of the unsustainable growth and consump-
tion rates he condemns. In the end, he re-
verts to the same paradox that bedevilled 
Marx: the state Scheidler detests is unique-
ly empowered to do his bidding, expro-
priating the rich (p. 298) and becoming 
– we are not told how – “an institution 
obligated to serve the common good”. It is 
a pity that the author’s errors and rhetoric
occlude his case: for Marx was, perhaps, 
right, or at least less wrong than his detrac-
tors have supposed. He deserves a better 
advocate.

Maria Todorova: The Lost World of 
Socialists at Europe’s Margins:

The rehabilitation of utopia in the age of 
the end of ideology is the main objective 
of Maria Todorova’s most recent book on 
the history of Bulgarian socialism. Cover-
ing chronologically approximately the pe-
riod of the Second International (1870s–
1920s), Todorova sets out to answer an 
ostensibly simple question: What drove 
young Bulgarian men and women to so-
cialism in the late nineteenth century? In 
more detail, what did they dream, feel, 
think, and fight for? And most significant-
ly, how did they form their socialist world 
view and convictions in a distant corner 
of Europe, and admittedly not exactly the 
epicentre of capitalistic development, such 
as Bulgaria?

Mira L. Siegelberg: Statelessness. A

Lange war das Forschungsfeld zu Fragen 
von Staatsangehörigkeit weitgehend juris-
tischen Abhandlungen vorbehalten, die 
häufig wie gutachterliche Stellungnahmen 
zu juristischen Problemfällen dieses beson-
deren Verhältnisses von Individuum und 
Staat gelesen werden konnten. Ein guter 
Teil der wissenschaftlichen Abhandlun-
gen war demnach bisher eher dem Genre 
der Policy-Literatur als der historischen 
Erkenntnis zur Entstehung von Staatenlo-
sigkeit zuzurechnen.[1] Ohnehin: während 
die Zahl der Publikationen und Tagungen 
zum Thema Staatsangehörigkeit etwa seit 
den 1990er Jahren beträchtlich gestiegen 
ist und einen wahren Aufschwung erfahren 
hat,[2] blieb die Geschichte ihres „Gegen-
stückes“, der Staatenlosigkeit, zunächst er-
staunlich wenig berücksichtigt.[3] 
Die hier vorliegende Arbeit von Mira L. 
Siegelberg liest sich demnach fast wie eine 
Antwort auf den größeren Forschungskor-
pus zur Staatsangehörigkeit, der vielleicht 
am prägnantesten im Buch von Andreas 
Fahrmeir zu „Citizenship. The Rise and 
Fall of a Modern Concept“ hervortritt. 
Siegelbergs als Dissertation an der Univer-
sität Harvard entstandene Studie tritt mit 
nichts weniger an als dem titelgebenden 
Anspruch, eine moderne Geschichte der 
Staatenlosigkeit vorzulegen. Diesem Feld 
nähert sich die Autorin in sechs Schritten, 
die weitgehend chronologisch angeordnet 
sind und zugleich ihr Argument jeweils ei-
nen Schritt weiterbringen. Das Verständnis 
von internationalem Recht, so eines ihrer 
Hauptargumente, hat sich seit dem Ersten 
Weltkrieg gerade auch in Folge der juristi-
schen und zum Teil auch philosophischen 
Debatten fundamental gewandelt. Wie 
sich dieser Wandel vollzog und wie aus-
gerechnet der Staat – und gerade nicht das 
internationale Recht als solches – schließ-
lich zu dem Rahmen wurde, der die Rechte 
der Individuen garantieren und schützen 
konnte und sollte, ist Thema ihrer Arbeit. 
Mira Siegelberg wendet sich nicht nur ju-
ristischen und philosophischen Publikatio-
nen der sich mit Staatenlosigkeit beschäf-
tigenden Zeitgenossen zu, sondern ergänzt 
diese auch durch umfangreiche Archivre-
cherchen. So bezieht sie unveröffentlichtes 
Material, etwa Briefwechsel und andere 
Überlieferungen aus persönlichen Nachläs-

sen der zu dem Themenfeld publizierenden 
zeitgenössischen Autoren mit ein. 
In ihrer ideengeschichtlichen Darstellung 
der Vorgeschichte von Staatenlosigkeit im 
18./19. Jh. arbeitet sie die zunehmenden 
Verengungen von Staatlichkeit und Zuge-
hörigkeit heraus, die deren moderne Folge 
der Staatenlosigkeit überhaupt erst möglich 
machten: denn erst, wenn Rechte nur über 
eine politische und administrative Mit-
gliedschaft an eine partikulare Gruppe ge-
koppelt sind, wird die Frage des „richtigen 
Passes“ zu einer Frage der Zugehörigkeit. 
Schon die Forschungen etwa von Andreas 
Fahrmeir haben für den Fall der StaatsAN-
gehörigkeit aufgezeigt, wie fundamental 
diese Wandlung war: bis zum 20. Jh. war 
der Pass vor allem ein instrumentell genutz-
tes Vehikel für Reisen, Verkehr, Transport 
und Handel. Ein Symbol bzw. Ausweis der 
Zugehörigkeit wurde es erst mit der nati-
onalstaatlichen Verengung, die auch den 
Verlust staatlicher Zugehörigkeit – eben die 
StaatenLOSigkeit – zu einer mindestens 
existenziellen, im NS dann gar lebensbe-
drohlichen Erfahrung werden ließ. 
Dieser Wandlung geht Siegelberg im zwei-
ten Kapitel nach, in dem sie sich dem 
Umgang mit Staatenlosigkeit in der Völ-
kerbundzeit zuwendet. Die Entstehung 
und Verteilung eines neuen Ausweisdoku-
mentes, des Nansen-Passes, der gewisser-
maßen zu einer vorweggenommenen An-
erkennung von Staatenlosigkeit als eigener 
Kategorie führte – eine Entwicklung, die 
bislang vor allem für die Zeit der jüdischen 
Displaced-Persons angenommen wird –, 
ist dabei die Kernbeobachtung dieses Ab-
schnittes. 
In allen Kapiteln befasst sich die Autorin 
mit den juristischen Debatten und Diskur-
sen und liest die Texte ihrer Protagonisten 
gewissermaßen mit- und gegeneinander. 
So leitet sie auch her, aus welchen Denk-
schulen und -richtungen die Diskutanten 
kommen und wie sich ihre Haltungen 
zum Umgang mit Staatenlosigkeit in ihr 
allgemeines Rechts- und Staatsverständnis 
einfügen. Daraus leitet sie zwei Lager von 
Juristen ab: die einen waren bemüht, Staa-
tenlosigkeit gewissermaßen als eine von 
vielen juristischen Herausforderungen zu 
lesen, ohne sie als neue, das bisherige inter-
nationale Recht in nie zuvor dagewesener 
Weise infrage stellende Krise anzusehen. 
Die anderen wiederum betrachteten gerade 
das Problem der modernen Staatenlosen als 
beispielhaft für notwendige Neujustierun-
gen der Vorstellungen von internationalem 
Recht und Völkerrecht. 
Aus dieser Diskussion arbeitet sie sehr ein-
drucksvoll heraus, dass mit der Internatio-
nalisierung der Diskussion um Staatenlo-
sigkeit auch zunehmend klarer wurde, dass 
die rein juristische Markierung als staatsan-
gehörig/staatenlos, also eine formalisierte 
legale Zugehörigkeit, zunehmend von neu-
en Formen und Interpretationen von Zu-
gehörigkeit verdrängt wurde. Dazu trugen 
wesentlich die Diskussionen um die Men-
schenrechte bei, die den Anspruch auf ein 
Recht auf Nationalität zugleich moralisch 
aufluden – das dann wiederum juristisch 
untermauert und gesichert werden musste. 
Auf diesen Wandel geht sie vor allem im 
fünften Kapitel ein, in dem es um die Aus-
wirkungen des Nationalsozialismus und 
des Zweiten Weltkriegs geht. 
Die Autoren, die bei Siegelberg zu Wort 
kommen, sind vorwiegend Juristen euro-
päischer und/oder US-amerikanischer Her-
kunft; viele von ihnen obendrein jüdisch – 
so etwa Hersch Lauterpacht, René Cassin, 
Paul Weis. Und natürlich wird auch Han-

nah Arendt Gegenstand der Diskussion. 
Dieser Teil ihres Buches zeigt die überaus 
faszinierende Form, mit der Siegelberg ihre 
Quellen präsentiert: Sie bringt die Texte 
gewissermaßen miteinander ins Gespräch. 
Gerade im Abschnitt zu Arendt zeigt sie, 
wie sich Quellen und ihre Lesarten verän-
dern können und um wieviel vielschichti-
ger Arendts Ausführungen zur Staatenlosig-
keit sind, als es in den verkürzten Zitaten 
in der Forschungsliteratur zuweilen den 
Anschein macht. 
Zeitlich streckt Siegelberg ihre Arbeit zwar 
von der Vorgeschichte über die Zwischen-
kriegszeit bis in die 1960er Jahre, teils auch 
mit Ausführungen, die bis zur Gegenwart 
reichen und im Fazit gar die neuen Formen 
von Staatenlosigkeit (bzw. dem Verschwin-
den von Staaten) infolge des Klimawandels 
aufzeigen. Doch der Kern ihrer Beobach-
tungen und ihres Interesses liegt erkennbar 
in der Zwischenkriegszeit und den Auswir-
kungen der massenhaften, staatlich organi-
sierten Ausbürgerung von Juden und Jüdin-
nen sowie der daraus folgenden zentralen 
europäischen Staatenlosigkeitserfahrung 
des 20. Jhs. – zuerst der Russen und Ar-
menier (Stichwort: Nansen-Pass) und dann 
der jüdischen und nichtjüdischen ausge-
bürgerten Deutschen. Dabei interessieren 
sie weniger die Auswirkungen von Staaten-
losigkeit auf die Betroffenen, sondern die 
Lesarten und Schlussfolgerungen innerhalb 
juristischer und vor allem rechtsphilosophi-
scher Diskussionen von den 1920er bis in 
die 1940er und frühen 1950er Jahre. 
In allen Kapiteln beschäftigt sich Siegelberg 
vor allem damit, die Veränderungen zu deu-
ten und zu interpretieren, die von neuen 
Beschlüssen – wie etwa dem Nansen-Pass 
– bewirkt wurden. Demgegenüber tritt eine 
dichtere Betrachtung der Diskussionen in 
den einzelnen Organisationen und Gre-
mien in den Hintergrund. Sie interessiert 
sich mithin vor allem für die sich verän-
dernden Ideen und Argumentationsli nien 
der beteiligten Akteure innerhalb dieser 
Diskurse – die reale Praxis vor Ort ist da-
bei ebenso wenig Thema wie die konkreten, 
lebensweltlichen Auswirkungen. So ist die 
hier vorliegende Arbeit vor allem eine vor-
zügliche ideengeschichtliche Annäherung 
ans Thema, die jedoch ohne erfahrungsge-
schichtlichen Bezug auskommt. Die Orga-
nisationen, die sich um die Probleme rund 
um Staatenlosigkeit bemühten, sind ebenso 
wenig Gegenstand von Siegelbergs Unter-
suchung wie die von Staatenlosigkeit Be-
troffenen. Dies bleibt weiteren Forschun-
gen vorbehalten, die nicht ohne das hier 
vorgelegte Grundlagenwerk auskommen 
werden – zumal Siegelberg ihre Kapitel je-
weils mit konkreten lebensgeschichtlichen 
Beispielen beginnt und damit die Bedeu-
tung dieses Zugangs keineswegs verkennt. 
Staatenlosigkeit ist und bleibt in ihrem 
Buch erkennbar ein europäisches Thema. 
Europa ist der Ursprung der Staatenlosig-
keit, die sie ins Zentrum stellt – und doch 
bleibt dieser geographische bzw. geopoliti-
sche Kontext eigentümlich blass. Europa ist 
kaum selbst Thema, aber auch die Frage, 
was sich am Umgang mit Staatenlosigkeit 
ändert, sobald das europäische Problem 
zu einem globalen Problem wird, bleibt 
ausgespart. So wird Europa höchstens zur 
Kulisse, etwa des Völkerbundes. Der Titel 
des – nebenbei bemerkt: außergewöhnlich 
schön gestalteten! – Buches, das mit dem 
Anspruch daherkommt, nicht weniger 
als „Statelessness. A Modern History“ zu 
liefern, ist vielleicht ein bisschen groß ge-
griffen. Doch der immensen Relevanz des 
Themas wird er unbedingt gerecht, und das

zeigt sich sowohl am Einstieg in das Thema 
wie auch am Ausblick der Autorin. Denn 
gerade aktuelle Krisen – die Auswirkungen 
von Kriegen ebenso wie der Klimakatastro-
phe – führen uns allen vor Augen, wie be-
deutsam Staatsangehörigkeit und wie fragil 
selbige ist, mithin wie bedrohlich der Ver-
lust staatlichen Schutzes sein kann.

Oliver Eberl: Naturzustand und 
Barbarei. Begründung und Kritik

Oliver Eberl beschreibt das Anliegen von 
„Naturzustand und Barbarei“ als einen 
„interne[n] Beitrag zur […] Selbstaufklä-
rung“ der „europäisch-westlichen politi-
schen Theorie“ (S. 59). Das Ziel bestehe 
darin, der politischen Theorie „den Einfluss 
des kolonialen Blicks auf ihre Theoriebil-
dung bewusst zu machen“ (S. 58). Eberl 
stapelt hier etwas tief, weil das Buch weit 
mehr als nur partikulare disziplinäre In-
teressen bedient. Das Feld der politischen 
Theorie schließt bei Eberl philosophische 
und theologische Texte ebenso ein, wie ge-
schichts-, rechts- und sozialwissenschaftli-
che Quellen. Eberl schöpft aus allen diesen 
Quellen und verknüpft diese gekonnt zu 
einer ebenso spannenden wie lehrreichen 
Erzählung. Leserinnen und Leser die unter-
schiedlichen disziplinären Perspektiven, die 
an den Themen Kolonialismus und Post-
kolonialismus arbeiten, können Eberl mit 
Gewinn lesen.
Der Gegenstand der Erzählung ist der Be-
griff der „Barbarei“, seiner Begründungen 
und Verwendungen in unterschiedlichen 
historischen Phasen der Ideengeschichte 
des Kolonialismus. Der Begriff der „Barba-
rei“ ist dabei so eng mit dem Kolonialismus

A quarter of a century ago, when Kofi Annan, the first African Secretary-General of the 
United Nations, attempted to reform the composition of the Security Council, and with 
it a cornerstone of the overall architecture of an organisation founded in 1944, he started 
from two basic convictions that were shared by many at the time. 
The Cold War was over and with it the strange foundations of an international order that 
rested on a balance of deterrence between the two great victorious powers of the Second 
World War had come to an end. It seemed that Pax Americana would be suitable for 
the long-lasting guarantee of a new world order. Thereupon, adjustments to the changes 
triggered by the massive decolonisation of the 1940s to the 1970s, by the ever-widening 
interdependence of all parts of the world and by the growing awareness of the global 
challenges that could only be overcome together, finally seemed possible. 
The second assumption was that such a new global governance would have to be based 
on the participation and representation of all continents. And these continents could be 
represented much more democratically by regional organisations in which all countries 
would have a seat and a voice than by individual powers whose national interests did not 
necessarily coincide with those of their neighbours. Through such a democratisation of 
the international order, all humanity could actively participate in the shaping of world 
affairs and would no longer have to feel both represented and excluded by a cartel of the 
powerful. Annan’s vision, which was soon to be shattered by the interests of the power-
ful, was obviously inspired by the hopes that Africa’s political elites placed in a regional 
organisation that had just transformed the old Organisation of African Unity, which had 
been founded in 1963 shortly after the independence of many African states, into the 
new African Union that was supposed to be a reinterpretation of the pan-African tradi-
tion, pooling the continent’s strengths and giving it more weight on the international 
stage. It was to take some time before the African Union found the self-confident slogan 
“African solutions for African problems” for its ambitions in the second decade of the 
new millennium. But the path seemed to have been found on which an integration pro-
gramme could be implemented.
The contributions in this thematic issue report first-hand on the successes and stumbling 
blocks on this path – specialists link internal and sympathetic external perspectives and

provide the African Union with a birthday greeting that does not get lost in the symbolic 
actions of earlier anniversaries, which Ulf Engel reports on in his introduction, but in-
stead asks with an analytical perspective what the state of the idea of global governance 
based on regional organisations is.
While some researchers, both inside and outside Africa, take the European Union as the 
blueprint of such new regionalisms, one should not necessarily expect copies or clones of 
the European Union to emerge everywhere. European regionalism is one among many, 
albeit one that has already come a long way in allocating resources to common goals. If 
one compares it with others, similarities and differences alike come to light. They range 
from the historical rationale for regional integration and path dependencies based on 
it that are accepted in the respective region, via resource endowments and institution-
alisation, to the position in the power imbalance of international politics. A world that 
controls its cooperation and competition via the sub-controls of the new regionalisms 
should by no means be imagined symmetrically. 
Against this background, the anniversary of the African Union is less an occasion to 
measure it normatively against the functioning of other regionalisms than to decipher its 
own logic in order to be able to assess the future interplay of a multilateral order worthy 
of the name. To this end, this issue makes an important contribution by assessing where 
the African Union stands in achieving the ambitious goals expressed in its Vision 2063. 
In the process, sceptical judgements are juxtaposed with optimistic objectives. In 2017, 
for example, the so-called Kagame Report had lamented that “the unfortunate truth is 
that Africa today is ill-prepared to adequately respond to current events, because the 
African Union still has to be made fit for purpose”. At the same time, various bodies of 
the organisation keep setting goals that seem overly ambitious and for which it is unclear 
whether they can be achieved without external donorship. However, the attitude is in-
creasingly spreading that it is more appropriate to formulate integration goals that can be 
achieved with the resources of the member states. This brings the question of the owner-
ship of African institutions to the fore – undoubtedly the prerequisite for a self-confident 
contribution to a global governance that actually arises from the interaction of different 
actors on an equal footing and is not geared solely to the security needs and economic 
interests of the major powers. With this goal in mind, the African Union’s Agenda 2063 
also formulates the connection between cultural decolonisation and further develop-
ment of Pan-Africanism on the one hand and people-driven and peaceful development 
on the continent on the other. Overcoming Eurocentrism thus becomes a prerequisite 
for a whole series of essential goals that can only be achieved if the African Union creates 
space for economic integration, political unity, and cultural autonomy of the continent 
and the testing of different social models in the member countries.

a wider audience that may not have been 
concerned with the finer details of the pos-
sibly constitutional arrangements of a hy-
pothetical super-empire. 
Bell makes a strong and convincing case 
for the importance of speculative fiction, 
in particular, to Anglotopian visions and 
the project of promoting them. But, it 
remains unclear whether Anglotopia was 
indeed a “cyborg” project of techno-scien-
tific utopianism through and through, as 
Bell suggests it was. Carnegie and Rhodes 
do not appear to be technophilic utopians 
as much as they seem to be – especially 
when read through Stead – quasi-spirit-
ualist, messianic figures concerned with 
old categories of religion and language as 
the foundation of a race unity. Likewise, 
the concluding contrasts Dreamworlds 
of Race draws between Anglotopianism, 
the “Afro-Modernity” of early twentieth 
African American thinkers like W. E. B. 
DuBois, and the liberatory potential of 
the “steampunk politics” in contemporary 
speculative fiction are simultaneously too 
brief and potentially overstated. Surely the 
contestations of early twentieth-century 
Anglophone white supremacy emerging 
from the other side of the colour line were 
equally as rich and varied as the differences 
that separated Rhodes from, say, Wells. 
And the reader is left wondering what 
“steampunk politics”, fully realized, might 
actually look like as a political programme.
Still, Dreamworlds of Race not only helps 
to contextualize today’s more classical re-
vivals of white supremacy on both sides 
of the pond but also will perhaps attune 
researchers and students alike to ways 
that white supremacy can course its way 
through the veins of techno-utopian titans 
of neo-liberal (post-)industry. Bell’s work 
is a reminder of that other meaning of 
utopia – as no place at all, thrown up as 
a mirage to obscure the rotten core of an 
earlier paradise.

Die theoretischen und methodischen Ver-
änderungen, welche der spatial turn seit den 
1990er Jahren für geschichtswissenschaft-
liches Arbeiten hervorgerufen hat, wurden 
insbesondere in der Globalgeschichte ma-
nifest. Als neu entstandene Subdisziplin 
wurde sie aufgrund ihrer offenkundigen 
raumwissenschaftlichen Ausrichtung be-
sonders stark von der Neubestimmung 
des Verhältnisses der Geschichtswissen-
schaft zu räumlichen Bezügen geprägt. 
Dies verdient insofern Aufmerksamkeit, 
als mit den Arbeiten Braudels und Wal-
lersteins zwei prägende Meisterzählungen 
erheblichen Einfluss auf die Formierung 
globalgeschichtlicher Fragestellungen und 
Zugänge ausübten, bei denen räumlichen 
Überlegungen nicht nur als Strukturprin-
zip entscheidende Rollen zukamen. Noch

entscheidender ist vielmehr der Umstand, 
dass beide Werke unterschiedlich konzi-
pierten Interaktionsräumen folgten, selbst 
wenn sie dies begrifflich nicht so fassten.
Dass diese retrospektiv oft als innovativ 
eingestuften Arbeiten gerade aufgrund 
ihrer als raumdeterministisch und linear 
wahrgenommenen Konzeption von den 
Ansätzen des spatial turn besonders stark 
kritisiert wurden, erklärt sich gleicher-
maßen aus der kulturwissenschaftlichen 
Grundierung des neuen Paradigmas als 
auch aus der Skepsis gegenüber großen 
Metanarrativen. Genau an diesem Punkt 
setzt der von Jan Bemann, Dittmar Dahl-
mann und Detlev Taranczewski herausge-
gebene Sammelband an. Die Herausgeber 
versammeln in dem Band eine beachtliche 
Zusammenschau theoretischer, wissen-
schaftshistorischer wie empirischer Fall-
studien, die sich allesamt kritisch-reflexiv 
mit dem Zentrum-Peripherie-Modell 
auseinandersetzen, das in den vergange-
nen Jahren aus postkolonialer Perspektive, 
jüngst auch seitens der New Imperial His-
tory infrage gestellt worden ist.
In dem Band soll daher einerseits die „Los-
lösung“ der „Thematik von Zentrum und 
Peripherie“ von „raumdeterministischen 
Ansätzen“ verfolgt werden, um „die Räum-
lichkeit des dichotomisch verwalteten und 
gestalteten Raumes besser in den Fokus“ 
zu rücken, wie Daniel Schley und Detlev 
Taranczewski in ihrer Einleitung festhal-
ten (S. 15). Daraus folgt die Anerken-
nung, wonach „Zentren und Peripherien 
[…] eben keine soziale oder geographische 
Gegebenheit [sind], sondern eine Varian-
te sich wandelnder kollektiver, kultureller 
Raumpraktiken und deren Repräsentatio-
nen“ (ebd.). Zugleich melden Schley und 
Taranczewski Vorsicht gegenüber einer 
reinen kulturwissenschaftlichen Lesart des 
Zentrum-Peripherie-Modells an, da sie die 
Tendenz orten, „soziale Prozesse unter der 
Hand doch wieder auf eine objektiv ge-
dachte Natur zurückzuführen“ (S. 16). 
Aus dieser erfrischenden theoretischen 
Grundsatzbestimmung, welche die Di-
chotomie zwischen strukturellem Deter-
minismus einerseits und kulturwissen-
schaftlichem Relativismus andererseits 
überwindet, folgt dann eine Definition 
von Zentrum und Peripherie als raum-
bezogenen, sich gegenseitig bedingen-
den Machtbegriffen, die „asymmetrische 
Machtverhältnisse durch positionelle Zu-
ordnung festigen“ und „Ergebnisse sozial 
wirksamer, mentaler Raumsortierungen, 
die selbst Machterzeugnisse sind“ (S. 19). 
Zugleich wird der berechtigte Einwand der 
postkolonialen und kulturwissenschaftli-
chen Kritik, dass es sich weder um starre 
noch um eindeutige Zuschreibungen han-
delt, einbezogen und die dynamische Po-
sitionsveränderung ebenso betont wie das 
Bestehen von Zwischenräumen.
Mittels dieser umfassenden Definition 
wird zwar an ursprüngliche Theorien wie 
Wallersteins Weltsystemanalyse und Luh-
manns Systemtheorie angeknüpft, ihre 
Prämissen werden jedoch ausgeweitet, 
womit eine sowohl inhaltliche als auch 
chronologische Erweiterung der Perspekti-
ve einhergeht: Anders als bei Braudel und 
Wallerstein wird nicht eine welthistorische 
Zäsur im Hochmittelalter bzw. der Frühen 
Neuzeit für eine dann neu entstehende 
Hier archisierung des Raums gesetzt, die 
sich von Europa ausgehend auf den gesam-
ten Globus ausbreitet. Vielmehr verfolgen 
die 14 Autor:innen des Sammelbands ei-
nen chronologisch wie räumlich offenen 
Zugang und setzen das Zentrum-Periphe-

rie-Modell zur Untersuchung verschieden 
gelagerter räumlicher Machtkonfigura-
tionen ein. Dementsprechend sind die 
Beiträge des Werks, das die auf mehreren 
Tagungen vorgetragenen Ergebnisse des 
Bonner Sonderforschungsbereichs „Macht 
und Herrschaft – Vormoderne Konfigura-
tionen in transkultureller Perspektive“ ver-
sammelt und in einen wissenschaftlichen 
Diskurszusammenhang bringt, nicht chro-
nologisch, sondern thematisch geordnet.
Am Anfang steht eine theoriegeleitete, 
wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Auseinander-
setzung mit dem Konzept. Stefan Breuer 
analysiert klassische Texte aus der Sozio-
logie, von Spencer über Durkheim bis 
Luhmann, und arbeitet heraus, wie sich 
Luhmann in Reaktion auf die Parsons-
Schule als auch die weltsystemischen An-
sätze Wallersteins und Galtungs von der 
früheren „differenzierungstheoretisch aus-
gerichteten Soziologie“ (S. 62) abwandte. 
Allerdings blieb Luhmanns Zentrum-Peri-
pherie-Modell explizit nicht auf die Mo-
derne beschränkt, sondern bezog sich auch 
auf vormoderne Gesellschaften. Anna Flü-
ckiger setzt sich kritisch mit der Anwen-
dung des Zugangs in der Ur- und Früh-
geschichte auseinander und unterzieht das 
immer noch einflussreiche zentralörtliche 
Modell Walter Christallers und seiner Re-
zeption im Fachdiskurs einer akribischen 
Analyse. Dabei werden die epistemologi-
schen völkischen Grundlagen von Chris-
tallers Theorie mitsamt all ihren proble-
matischen Verzerrungen und Leerstellen 
herausgearbeitet, insbesondere jedoch auf 
die bereits erfolgten Korrekturen unrich-
tiger Annahmen der Theorie verwiesen. 
Am Ende steht die Schlussfolgerung das 
hierarchische Modell neu zu denken, da-
bei allerdings die Begriffe Zentrum und 
Peripherie nicht gänzlich oder grundsätz-
lich über Bord zu werfen, hingegen sehr 
wohl ihre konkrete Bedeutung kohärent 
zu definieren, um verzerrende (Rück-)Pro-
jektionen imaginierter wie realer gesell-
schaftlicher Verhältnisse auf vormoderne 
Gesellschaften zu vermeiden.
Christoph Ulf analysiert die Beeinflussung 
der Machtvorstellung im griechischen 
Epos Ilias die Ablehnung eines auf fixier-
ten Parametern beruhenden Zentrum-
Peripherie-Rasters. Als nützlicher erweise 
sich vielmehr das Konzept der kulturellen 
Kontaktzonen als einem „fluiden Raum 
von Interaktionen“ (S. 108), der an die 
stelle a priori definierter, fester physisch-
räumlicher Einheiten tritt. Solcherart lässt 
sich der Raumbegriff weiter differenzieren 
und mit konkreten Akteuren in Verbin-
dung setzen, allerdings kommt auch dieser 
Ansatz nicht ohne schematische Konzep-
tualisierungen aus – beispielsweise hin-
sichtlich der Art des Transfers. Zugleich 
stellt sich die Frage, ob nicht die räumli-
che Ebene, auf der hierarchische Macht-
beziehungen verortet werden, eigentlicher 
Ansatzpunkt der Kritik ist und nicht so 
sehr die raumbezogene Machtbeziehung 
an sich, die im Begriffspaar Zentrum/Pe-
ripherie zum Ausdruck kommt.
Diana Ordubadi und Jan Kusber untersu-
chen in ihren Beiträgen unterschiedliche 
Raumhierarchien im frühneuzeitlichen 
Russländischen Reich: Während Ordubadi 
den Blick auf die Legitimationsstrategien 
des imperialen Zentrums in Bezug auf die 
Nachfolgetheorie der Zentren Rom und 
Konstantinopel sowie einer dichotomen 
Zuschreibung zwischen imperialer, positiv 
konnotierter Innen- und extraterritorialer, 
pejorativ gedeuteter Außenwelt richtet, 
zeigt Kusber an den drei Beispielen Kasan,

Georgien und der Ukraine die Modi von 
Inkorporation imperialer Peripherien in 
einem Wechselspiel aus Autonomie und 
Subordination. Zwar waren diese Gebiete 
bei ihrer Inkorporation in das Russländi-
sche Reich für die Definition des imperi-
alen Status räumlich wie auch ideologisch 
zentral und wirkten zudem mit ihren 
kulturellen Traditionen auf das imperia-
le Zentrum zurück und trugen zu dessen 
Redefinition bei. Allerdings veränderte 
sich durch die fortschreitende Expansion 
des Zarenreichs im 18. Jh., insbesondere 
durch die Annexion der Krim und die Tei-
lungen Polens, der Status dieser drei Räu-
me innerhalb des imperialen Rahmens.
Diese Beiträge zeigen ebenso wie die 
Aufsätze von Peter Schwieger zu Tibet, 
Ishayahu Landas zum chinesischen Yuan-
Reich und seinen nördlichen Gebieten 
und Karl Fridays sowie Satoru Kuroshimas 
zu Japan den Gewinn einer dynamischen 
Zentrum-Peripherie-Konstruktion, die 
politisch, sozial und kulturell gleicherma-
ßen sensibel ist und im Sinn Schwiegers 
systemtheoretisch interaktiv ausgerichtet 
bleibt. Die Fokussierung verschiedener 
asiatischer Regionen und Imperien, aus-
gehend vom eurasischen Übergangsraum 
Russland, fördert dabei nicht nur die Re-
lativität räumlicher Hierarchien innerhalb 
der einzelnen Weltregionen und Imperien 
zutage, indem periphere Gebiete niemals 
vollständig unter die Kontrolle des Zent-
rums gebracht werden konnten und  die 
ihrerseits oftmals Subzentren kultureller 
und sozialer Art ausbildeten. Darüber 
hinaus macht der Blick nach Tibet und 
Yuan-China sino-zentrische Narrative 
deutlich, was die Notwendigkeit, Zivili-
sierungsmissionen oder andere räumlich 
orientierte, kulturell wie sozial grundierte 
Machtlegitimationen in einem multipo-
laren Rahmen zu verorten, unterstreicht. 
Diesem Anliegen folgen grosso modo 
auch die drei abschließenden Beiträge des 
Bandes, welche anhand kunstgeschichtli-
cher Entwicklungen im antiken Ägypten, 
dem mittelalterlichen Gotha und dem 
frühneuzeitlichen Burgund zeigen, dass 
auf der symbolischen Ebene Peripherien 
in multiple Zentralräume hineinwirkten, 
zugleich auch deren Dominanzanspruch 
unterminieren konnten. Insgesamt zeigt 
der Band in einer eindrucksvollen räum-
lichen, chronologischen wie thematischen 
Vielfalt die Nützlichkeit der Analysekate-
gorien „Zentrum/Peripherie“ in der his-
torischen Forschung. Die Voraussetzung 
dafür – eine theoriegeschichtlich kritische 
Eigenreflexion gepaart mit dem Aufgreifen 
der Erkenntnisse kulturwissenschaftlicher 
und postkolonialer Debatten hinsichtlich 
der räumlichen und zeitlichen Dynamik, 
der Relativität zwischen beanspruchter 
und ausgeübter Macht – erfüllt der Band 
auf eindrucksvolle Art.

peers and seniors. By linking the history of 
his rise to the top of the party to the devel-
opment of militant positions and practices 
of the MK, Landau also offers compara-
tive perspectives on the histories of other 
Southern African liberation movements 
and the constitutive role of violence in 
their evolution. (Of course, Zimbabwe 
and Robert G. Mugabe come to mind, but 
not just them.) Moreover, the book cer-
tainly also is a contribution to historicizing 
the god-like figure Mandela became after 
the end of apartheid – at least for those 
without a solid grounding in the history 
of the movement and the struggle. But 
first and foremost, Landau’s book portrays 
the future president of South Africa firmly 
as “an African nationalist, Black Marxist” 
(p. 295) and a member of the South Af-
rican Communist Party (SACP) (which 
Mandela later concealed). Indeed, this is 
not great news, but it is likely to make us 
critically rethink much of the post-1994 
hagiographic writing about Mandela and 
the “Rainbow Nation”. Hence, this book 
also provides an opportunity to reconsider 
Mandela, the ANC-SACP alliance, and 
their past violent option in a decolonial 
perspective. This also may shed some more 
light on current developments in a country 
that today is facing huge challenges both 
in terms of leadership and social cohesion.

Science, Scale, and Spatiality in the 
Nineteenth Century, Baltimore: Johns

The main aim of this collective volume is 
to put science and scientific thought into 
an appropriate spatial, social, and intellec-
tual context. Against general histories of 
science that present the evolution of sci-
ence as a pure theoretical enterprise, pos-
sibly universal (one science for the whole 
world), the authors insist on the role local 
specificities and space play in the history 
of science. The editors and most of the 
authors continually (maybe a little bit too 
much!) refer to the works of David Liv-
ingston, a historian and geographer who 
during the last 30 years emphasized the 
location of science and the spatial scales of 
knowledge. Following this same path, the 
book presents three main sections: local 
studies, national studies, and global stud-
ies. The first section includes the chapters 
on Malthus’s theory of population (Robert 
Mayhew and Yvonne Sherratt) and on the 
physicist John Tindall and his entourage in 
Belfast (Diarmid Finnegan). The second 
section introduces the theories of Henry 
Hotze on race and religion (Mark Noll), 
then to the disputes over race and religion 
in the nineteenth-century USA (Ronald 
Number), and finally to the evolution of 
the structuralist theory of evolution in

Germany (Nicolaas Rupke). The last and 
third section (global spaces of knowledge) 
focuses on the debates about the meridian 
(Charles Withers), botanic (Nula John-
son), and climate science in the colonial 
context (Vinita Damoradan), as well as the 
scientific and sometimes merely adventure 
expeditions to Africa (Dane Kennedy).
As is often the case in the edited volumes, 
the level of the chapters is uneven: some 
present interesting developments (the 
chapters on botany, Malthus, and climate 
science), whereas others are less elabo-
rated. However, it is the architecture and 
questioning of the volume as a whole that 
deserve careful attention. 
The three scales (local, national, and glob-
al) are separated into three sections: the ed-
itors highlight that the interplay between 
the scales are important, and, nevertheless, 
they defend the relevance of this partition. 
The problem is that, for example, Mal-
thus’s population theory (in the local stud-
ies section) is one of the most global and 
transnational approaches ever produced 
in politics and economics during the last 
three centuries. Of course, local influences 
mattered, but it seems difficult to almost 
exclusively underscore them and then in-
clude Malthus’s theory in the section on 
the local knowledge. At the opposite end, 
the chapters on global knowledge could 
have been easily integrated with influences 
of local societies, which is perfectly shown 
in some chapters of this section.
In other words, it would have been pos-
sible in all the chapters to stress the co-
existence of the three scales, even though 
their hierarchy may have changed over 
time. However, if the editors and authors 
were intended to justify the separation of 
these scales, then the introduction should 
have included a more detailed questioning 
of the historical processes and their scales 
during the nineteenth century, as well as 
how these dynamics interacted in connec-
tion with knowledge construction.
The fact is that the volume starts from a 
critique of the history of knowledge “in an 
empty sky”, which is certainly true in some 
introductions to scientific knowledge or 
histories written by scientists themselves. 
Instead, histories of science written by 
historians repeatedly refer to specific con-
texts, multiple scales, the original influ-
ences, the milieus, and the circulation and 
reception of knowledge. Intellectual his-
tory (of course, in its more recent shape, 
connecting ideas to social and political dy-
namics) adopts this same approach. Some 
of the chapters could have been easily 
included into volumes belonging to this 
tradition. The question therefore is what 
does geography bring. To some extent, 
utilizing the local and space in historical 
analysis is similar to the well-known pro-
cess (for an historian) of putting a piece in 
its proper context. This involves examin-
ing different features, such as biographies, 
local conditions, broader circulations, in-
stitutional settings, and so on. In this re-
gard, the spatial turn reproduces the same 
ambivalence as the conventional approach 
of placing objects in their proper contexts. 
On the one hand, we benefit from a better 
understanding of the social and political

influenced a theory and its diffusion. Cau-
sality is an extremely slippery notion in 
history and the social sciences, and spa-
tialization is not able to solve this question

there multiple botanies, political econo-
mies, and weather forecasting, and how 
did a presumed universal science impose 
through its intrinsic ideals the strength 
of capitalism? This last point is just men-
tioned in the introduction, but we do 
not have any discussion and hypothesis 
between its emergence and the shifts in 
the scales of knowledge. To this end, one 
would have needed a deep discussion on 
the circulation of knowledge – not just, 
saying, the diffusion of Malthus’s ideas, 
but something close to connected history 
and the mutual, though unequal influence 
between so-called local and global knowl-
edge (Nuala Johnson’s chapter is one bril-
liant exception). 
In short, this volume identifies some blind 
spots in the historiographical debates on 
knowledge and science, yet, further inves-
tigation is required to translate intuition 
into an appropriate epistemological turn.

prominent strand of historiography, wide-
ly received not only between the 1950s 
and the 200th anniversary of the Bastille 
Storm in 1989 but also in the aftermath 
of the historiographical controversies of 
the bicentenary. On the occasion of his 
90th birthday, Pascal Dupuy (Rouen) and 
Isabelle Laboulais (Strasbourg) compiled a 
volume documenting the many facets of 
a highly productive historian’s life, which 
revolves entirely around the revolution, as 
well as its political dimensions and its sig-
nificance for the present (during the Cold 
War and afterwards). It goes without say-
ing that the 350 pages are only an excerpt 
from the complete oeuvre. The numerous

important works on François-Noël Babeuf 
and his conspiracy of 1796, for example, 
were deliberately left out because Mazauric 
himself drew the sum of his reflections on 
this egalitarian, early socialist movement 
once again in a comprehensive publication 
in 2020. 
About half of the volume, on the other 
hand, is filled with essays on impor-
tant historians, from Albert Soboul and 
Georges Lefebvre to Pierre Vilar, Albert 
Manfred, Eric Hobsbawm, and Michel 
Vovelle. This is interesting in view of their 
very different relationships to and interests 
in the French Revolution, but above all it 
offers insight into the diversity of Marxist 
interpretations and commitments, which 
were anything but homogenous. These 
essays are based on reviews or obituaries; 
nevertheless, they show Mazauric to be 
above all a master of characterizing basic 
positions limited to the essentials, so that 
one finds an entire life’s work impressively 
summarized in five to ten pages. It is a 
must-read for anyone who is concerned 
with the development of historiography in 
the Cold War and does not want to over-
look the French school of historiography 
that were almost hegemonic internation-
ally at the time.
Even if the central historians’ dispute 
about the French Revolution between 
1967 and 1983 has become known as the 
Furet-Soboul controversy, this polemic, 
which at the beginning was methodologi-
cally refreshing in many respects but at 
the end was perceived primarily as noth-
ing more than paralysing, would not have 
really taken off without Mazauric’s almost 
30-page review of a two-volume history of 
the revolutionary period penned by Denis 
Richet and François Furet in the columns 
of the Annales Historiques de la Révolution 
Française under the title “Reflections on 
a New Conceptualization of the French 
Revolution”. The dispute revolved around 
the question of whether the revolution fell 
into a happy, liberal part up to 1791 and 
a kind of derailment (dérapage) between 
1791 and 1795, or whether it could only 
be understood as a coherent whole (a bloc 
in Mazauric’s words). Neither had Richet 
and Furet completely reformulated the 
first position – it was prevalent in many 
older works of the nineteenth century 
– and nor did the second position grow 
out of the late 1960s polemic alone, also 
continuing a certain view of the French 
Revolution. What was new, however, was 
the enormous public attention paid to 
this debate and the reference to the po-
litical conflicts of the late 1960s: Furet and 
Mazauric certainly knew each other from 
joint engagement with the French Com-
munist Party, though one left the party 
after the Russian invasion of Budapest 
in 1956 and condemned the invasion of 
Prague in 1968, while the other remained 
in the party and suffered from the conflict 
between the Soviet claim to leadership 
and national communist efforts at eman-
cipation. These contemporary contradic-
tions are introduced in a 2014 letter from 
Mazauric to students at the University of 
Rouen, which precedes the reprint of the 
1967 review as an explanatory introduc-
tion. It is worth picking up the volume for 
this precise recontextualization alone.
Sometimes this editorial principle of 
contextualization is reduced to techni-
cal aspects in order to explain who com-
missioned the text in question or why it 
appeared in that particular anthology or 
journal, but on the whole the procedure

proves extraordinarily useful because we 
learn from the author himself with what 
motives and against what background the 
printed essays were written. And so we 
follow him on the path to a theory of the 
state during the French Revolution, to the 
role of Maximilien Robespierre, and to 
the history of the various organizations 
of French (revolutionary) historians, for 
example, during the German occupation 
in the Second World War or after the end 
of the Cold War. Mazauric and his editors 
have left the next generation of historians 
a treasure trove of insights that can help to 
understand the profession and its peripe-
ties in the second half of the twentieth 
century and thus perhaps also to realize 
what this has to do with our own exercise 
of the profession.
Raquel Varela: A People’s History of 
Europe: From World War I to Today,

“A people’s history” became the hallmark 
of a new kind of historiography a little bit 
more than half a century ago. At least two 
characteristics converged here. On the one 
hand, many authors not only evoked the 
tradition of a history from below, which 
had found a famous pioneer in Edward P. 
Thompson in the late 1950s, but also, in 
a broader phalanx, reconceived a history 
of the early modern period and the era of 
the French Revolution by asking about 
the social and mental history of peasants 
and sansculottes and the intervention of 
the nameless in the political history of 
the elites. Albert Soboul, Richard Cobb, 
Kalmán Benda, Georges Rudé, Walter 
Markov, and a whole series of others were 
concerned with the seemingly insignifi-
cant, ordinary men and women, without 
whom history did not proceed yet who 
too often appeared only as the “masses”. 
The demarcation from a liberal historiog-
raphy that concentrated on the educated 
and those in power was constitutive for 
this history from below, which initially 
took on the seventeenth and eighteenth 
centuries in Europe but soon expanded its 
view to include the anti-colonial uprisings 
outside Europe. A second characteristic 
was related to this. Authors of this history 
from below saw themselves as representa-
tives of a radical history – a social com-
mitment of historians to the cause of the 
underprivileged.
These histories were to be academically of 
the highest calibre, but they were to find 
their audience outside university circles as 
a means of encouraging those who were the 
underprivileged of the present. The peo-
ple’s history advocated the possibility of al-
ternative paths in history and highlighted 
the moments of forks in the road where 
the victory or defeat of such alternative 
paths was decided. The authors of people’s 
history understood and still understand 
this as an encouragement to search for 
such alternatives in the present and future 
as well and not to resign themselves to the 
existing conditions. Correspondingly ex-
plicit was the reference to the social move-
ments from below, to whom this kind of 
historiography was intended to offer their 
own image of history.
