Correlation of offspring thyroid function and maternal iodine status in iodine deficient-coastal area

    Get PDF
Thyroid hormone is vital for children's growth and metabolism, relying on sufficient iodine levels for synthesis. Maternal intake determines iodine supply to fetuses and children under two years old. This study aimed to correlate offspring thyroid function with maternal iodine status in coastal areas. A cohort study was conducted, involving pregnant coastal residents. Maternal urinary iodine levels were measured via the ammonium persulfate method, while offspring thyroid stimulating hormones (TSHs) and free thyroxine hormone (fT4) levels were assessed using electro-chemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA). Iodine intake was determined through a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The correlation between offspring thyroid function and maternal iodine status was analyzed using Pearson’s correlation test. Differences in TSHs and fT4 levels among iodine status groups were examined using the One way-ANOVA test. Maternal iodine status was insufficient with a median urinary iodine of 125 μg/L, resulting in a 60.8% prevalence of iodine insufficiency. Iodine intake (62.20±43.45 μg/day) fell short of recommended levels (RDA). Offspring TSH was 2.29±1.07 μIU/mL, fT4 was 1.26±0.14 ng/dL. TSH and fT4 concentrations showed no significant inter-group differences (p=0.852, p=0.075). Offspring thyroid function did not correlate with maternal iodine status (TSHs: p=0.314; fT4: p=0.258). Offspring thyroid function did not correlate to maternal iodine status in a population of iodine-insufficient and mercury-contaminated coastal areas

Between body esteem and mental health among adolescents in China

    Get PDF
Numerous studies have highlighted the importance of body esteem and unconditional self acceptance (USA) in promoting mental health over actual body shape. This study aimed to examine the relationship between body esteem and mental health, and whether this is mediated by USA, and whether the mediation is moderated by actual body shape. The cross-sectional study included 189 adolescents from Ganzhou, China, to complete the body esteem scale (BES) and general health questionnaire (GHQ-28) to measure body esteem and general mental health, respectively. The bootstrap analysis, with 5,000 samples at a 95% confidence interval showed that the effect of body esteem on mental health was fully mediated by USA, and the significant mediation effect was observed only among individuals with moderate body mass index (BMI). These findings suggest that unconditional self-acceptance is an important protective factor against mental health issues, yet striving to have a moderate BMI with positive attitude helps with the entire process

    Get PDF
Pregnancy is a critical phase for human beings, which can lead to various mental health issues, including anxiety. It is important to recognize that pregnancy-related anxiety can increase over time and should be addressed. This study aimed to explore the multifactor of pregnancy-related anxiety during the first trimester. A cross-sectional health facility-based study was conducted in four Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia public health centers. A total of 129 pregnant women were involved and identified some exposures, such as socio-demographics, nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (NVP), emotion regulation, social support, and anxiety levels. The average age of participants was 27.3 years. Their anxiety level was moderate to severe (37.2%), and 62.8% were identified as having mild anxiety. This study suggests that pregnant women who lack social support (AOR=4.105; 1.824-9.237) and emotion dysregulation (AOR=2.749; 1.244-6.075) were identified as the risk factors of maternal anxiety during the first trimester. Being employed (AOR=0.410; 0.182-0.922) protects the high anxiety during pregnancy. This study suggests that the lack of social support, including social interaction most influences pregnant women’s mental well-being. Therefore, it may be helpful to establish an intervention plan that strengthens social support to improve maternal mental well-being

    Get PDF
Caring is central to nursing and requires scientific professional skills and knowledge. Numerous definitions highlight the fact that there is a range of perspectives regarding the caring behaviors. The purpose of this study was to provide a summary of caring behaviors among nursing students in order to depict a more comprehensive view, which could be used as foundational data for the argument that cultivating caring behaviors should be an early focus of the nursing curriculum. Article selection was guided by the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) Statements. Literature searches were conducted in June 21, 2022 in PubMed, cumulative index to nursing and allied health (CINAHL), and (OVID). The following search blocks were generated: nursing students, caring behavior, and education. About 318 were found using primary search descriptors and 19 studies were included in the review. All research was published between 2016 and 2020. The majority of studies were conducted using a cross-sectional design, two studies used prospective, and one study used a retrospective design. The caring behavior of nursing students varies depending on the country and instrument used, ranging from a moderate score to a high score, and varies from one study year to the next. The most dominant caring behavior domains reported are the domains of instrumental caring/physical caring and expressive caring/emotional caring. This study adds to the existing literature on nursing care and explains the universality of the concept of care from multiple theoretical perspectives. Caring interventions should be used to help students develop clinically-relevant caring behaviors

The use of dental services prevents oral diseases where its prevalence is associated with chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus (DM) that also has increased risks with age. Therefore, this observational, analytical and crosssectional study was conducted among 3,882 people. Data used for analysis in this research was collected from the Demographic and Family Health Survey of Peru (ENDES) from 2019 to 2021. Results from poisson regression analysis showed female gender had 1.02 times the probability of going to the dental service; likewise, people who were 91 to 100 years old had 12% more, the probability, like those with secondary education, had 8% more and those with the highest average, richest and richest wealth index had 20% more, 29% more and 29% more, respectively, the probability of going to the dental health service, as opposed to those who were very poor. The study concluded that there are several sociodemographic factors (such as being female, age progressed, natural region, those with high school, wealth index, type of residence) and personal factors (history of hypertension (HTN), physical disability) associated with a lack of access to dental services in people over 60 years old

    Get PDF
With the rapid development of information technology, the internet has evolved into an essential tool in everyday life. The global proportion of internet users has consistently risen in recent years. Notably, China boasts substantial internet users, with students representing the largest demographic, especially college students. The purpose of this study is to explore the issue of internet addiction among Chinese college students through various assessment tools. This study conducted a systematic literature review with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. A total of 409 publications were screened, and 23 were deemed eligible for inclusion in the review. The result revealed that there is no gold standard for evaluating internet addiction. Five types of instruments have been identified, and reported prevalence rates vary due to distinct assessment instruments and thresholds, spanning from 6.81% to 54.86%. Furthermore, internet addiction is associated with four factors among Chinese college students. Therefore, this study furnishes epidemiological evidence to support the prevention of internet addiction and the enhancement of mental health among college students
