Determining the effectiveness of stress management program by using hair cortisol concentration
Many studies have shown that healthcare workers are exposed to higher levels of stress than other occupations. However, little research has been conducted on the use of biomarker tools to assess chronic stress and assess the effectiveness of stress management programs for healthcare workers. The aim of this study was to measure the effectiveness of a Stress Management Program by measuring Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) scores and hair cortisol concentration (HCC) levels of healthcare workers in public healthcare facilities. This study was a three-group, quasi-experiment study with pre- and post-study assessment sessions. A total of 119 healthcare workers (28 from Group A, 21 from Group B, and 70 from Group C) were followed for 6 months. Significant favorable intervention effects on DASS-21 scores were found in Group A (Effect size =0.6) as compared to Group B (Effect size=0.2) and Group C (Effect size =02) at the end of the program. Time and group interaction effects were examined using the repeated measure ANOVA test in which there was a significant group *time interaction and effect size of 0.2 (p-value <0.01) across all the groups with a reduction in hair cortisol concentrations following the program. The study showed that stress management under healthy communities, building the nation (KOSPEN PLUS) program was successful in reducing stress levels, as seen through a decrease in both stress scores and hair cortisol levels. This is the first study in Malaysia to use hair cortisol as a biomarker for stress management, suggesting its reliability
Correlation of climate factors and the number of SARS-CoV-2 cases at Semarang, Central Java
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a new type of coronavirus that has symptoms of acute respiratory distress in general. In more severe, it can cause kidney failure, pneumonia, and death. Environmental conditions that cannot be anticipated, such as climate factors, can have an impact on the transmission and survival of viruses, including the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) viruses, which are responsible for the emergence of respiratory diseases. This research is a quantitative study using an ecological approach with secondary data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (temperature, humidity, and precipitation), and SARS-CoV-2 cases were sourced from the Semarang City COVID-19 Task Force in 2021 were univariate and bivariate analyzing. The highest temperature average occurs in October (29.8 ⁰C), the humidity average occurs in February (91.4%), and the average precipitation occurs in February (1,130 mm). Analysis of the correlation found that there was a correlation between the SARS-CoV-2 cases with humidity (p=0.000; r=-0.245) and temperature (p=0.016; r=-0.127), but there was no correlation between precipitation (p=0.403; r=-0.044). Analysis of the influence of meteorological elements related to temperature, humidity, and precipitation on the incidence of COVID-19 in Semarang City in 2021, it can be concluded that there is correlation between temperature and humidity on COVID-19 cases except for precipitation
Interactions and mechanisms of phenolic compounds with human immunodeficiency virus-1 Tat protein
Human immunodeficiency virus remains a serious health threat, with an increase of 24% newly cases globally. Targeting Tat protein is an emerging therapeutic strategy for inhibiting the feedback loop that drives the exponential increase in viral transcription and particle production of the virus. The study aimed to determine the inhibitory potential of phenolic compounds from Ricinus communis L. and Jatropha curcas L., against the Tat C protein using in silico techniques. Phenolic compounds identified from both plants were screened by absorption-distribution-metabolism-excretion (ADME) analysis using drug-likeness prediction. Molecular docking analysis of the compounds with drug-like properties against the receptor and ligand-protein complexes’ analysis and visualization were performed. The results revealed three phenolic compounds with the highest negative binding affinity to the receptor’s active site: ellagic and neochlorogenic acids with - 7.2 kcal/mol and isohemiphloin with -7.3 kcal/mol. The interacting amino acids of the complexes were majorly His13, Lys19, Lys28, Thr64, His65, Gln66, Pro70, Gln72, and Pro73 via non-covalent interactions: hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic, and electrostatic interactions. The identified phenolic compounds provide a core structure that can be candidate for plant-based antiviral drugs development to potentially aiding in the virus’s therapeutic challenge
Distinct dietary patterns lead to lower B12 intake in type 2 diabetes: a case-control study
B12 deficiency has a higher prevalence in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. The causes of this observation are poorly understood. Self-imposed (vegan/vegetarian) or advised dietary modification or intake of metformin could be contributing. Hence, we undertook this study to evaluate the dietary intake of Vitamin B12 in diabetes patients in comparison with age-matched healthy controls. Fifty T2DM patients (cases) and 50 age-matched volunteers (controls) aged 35-60 years were enrolled at a tertiary hospital, in New Delhi. Sociodemographic and dietary information was gathered and the average dietary intake of B12 was estimated using the Cobalamin Intake in North Indians-Food Frequency Questionnaire (COIN-FFQ) (developed and validated). Medical records were reviewed for biochemical parameters (HbA1c, lipid profile, and blood sugar) of the last three months. The mean age was 50.66±6.09 years (n=100) and the mean body mass index of 28.49±4.53 kg/m2. The mean intake of dietary B12 was 3.2±1.7 μg/day and 3.8±1.4 μg/day (p=0.047) in diabetes patients and controls respectively. Thirty-six percent of diabetes patients did not meet the currently recommended daily dietary intake of B12 intake (vs. 14% of controls; p=0.011). Diabetes patients have a lower dietary intake of Vitamin B12 attributable to their distinctive dietary pattern. It is necessary to explore the factors leading to lower dietary B12 intake in diabetes patients
Effect of diet, vitamin D3 and other factors on genital prolapse recurrensce
This study addresses the pressing need for further investigation into risk factors contributing to genital prolapse recurrence, with a focus on factors like younger age and body mass index (BMI) that have been confirmed in the literature. Conducted as a cross-sectional study involving 300 post-operative cases of genital prolapse patients, the case groups comprising 210 individuals received regular gynecological check-ups every six months during the initial five years post-surgery, followed by annual visits, wherein lifestyle, diet, and laboratory values were monitored and adjusted. In contrast, the control group (90 patients) did not undergo post-operative gynecological follow-up. The results indicate that weight lifting, heavy physical work, menopause, constipation, insufficient protein intake, diseases associated with prolonged cough, and BMI are strongly associated with the likelihood of recurrent genital prolapse, while a weight reduction of 5 kg or more exhibits a protective effect (p<0.001). The established regression model proves statistically significant, explaining 84.1% of genital prolapse recurrence factors, with a sensitivity of 84.8% and specificity of 98.8%. These findings emphasize the importance of postoperative lifestyle monitoring, nutritional guidance, and immune support to reduce the risk of genital prolapse recurrence
Family support, need for achievement, and entrepreneurial orientation on entrepreneurial intentions in vulnerable groups
This study aims to design and test the goodness of fit of a theoretical model that describes the effect of family support, need for achievement, and entrepreneurial orientation on entrepreneurial intentions with empirical data in the field. Research participation used subjects totaling 66 people from Ngalang village who were female, did not have permanent jobs, and were included in the poor category. Data collection uses four measurement scales: the entrepreneurial intention scale, family support scale, need for achievement scale, and entrepreneurial orientation scale, and is analyzed using partial least square (PLS) via smartPLS 3.0. The results of the study show the formation of a theoretical model of the influence of family support, need for achievement, and entrepreneurial orientation on entrepreneurial intentions that fit with empirical data. Family support has a positive and very significant effect on entrepreneurial intentions, the need for achievement does not affect an entrepreneurial orientation, and entrepreneurial orientation has a positive and very significant impact on entrepreneurial intentions. This research implies that this model can be used as a reference and applied to overcoming economic problems in vulnerable groups
Job and personal resources: boosting work engagement and job satisfaction in hospitals
The low level of job satisfaction (JS) among hospital staff is associated with the low level of work engagement (WE). To examine WE, the Job demand-resources theory is often applied. This study aims to see the effect of job resources (JR) and personal resources (PR) on WE and their impact on JS. This is a quantitative study that takes a cross-sectional method. The sample consisted of 244 employees of the Haji Hospital Makassar in South Sulawesi Province who were selected by random quota sampling and then analyzed using the Path Analysis test on SPSS AMOS 26. The results showed that JR (p-value 0.002<0.005, E=0.131) and PR (p-value 0.001<0.005, E=0.170) had a significant effect on WE. JR has a direct influence on JS (p-value 0.022<0.005, E=0.375). Although the indirect effect of JR on JS work engagement (WE) through is not significant (p-value 0.065<0.005), meanwhile, PR has a significant direct (p-value 0.001<0.005, E=0.248) and indirect (p-value 0.035<0.005, E=0.047) effect on JS. This study concludes that the direct influence path of PR is the best path for enhancing employee JS in hospitals
The society human immunodeficiency virus health literacy scale: the development and psychometric assessment
Society human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) related health literacy is an essential behavioural skill that contributes to understanding the disease and responding to people living with HIV. Measuring HIV health literacy in the community requires reliable tools to produce an objective health literacy index. This study aimed to design and examined the society HIV health literacy scale's (SHIVAL) psychometric properties. A cross sectional study was conducted on 381 people without HIV. Sample recruitment used convenience sampling. Instrument development and psychometric analysis include item pool construction and content validity examination, consistency reliability test, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. A standardized four factor model fits the HIV health literacy measure well. This scale has 15 items with good Cronbach's Alpha reliability index and content validity index. The final SHIVAL Scale has been determined reliable and appropriate for measuring health literacy related to HIV. Nurses or healthcare professionals can use this scale to predict an individual's HIV health literacy, thereby influencing the social intervention of HIV disease and enabling effective community health literacy strategies
Triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio as a marker of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in type 2 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD) shared a common feature, insulin resistance (IR), which is marked by a change in the lipoprotein fraction, namely increased triglycerides (TG) and decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. Blood lipids are routinely examined in T2DM patients; thus, our study aimed to investigate the performance of TG/HDL-C ratio values to identify hepatic steatosis, the earliest manifestation of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), in T2DM patients. One hundred adult T2DM patients over 30 years old were recruited from the diabetes outpatient clinic at the Dr. Soetomo General Academic Hospital from August to October 2023. Data regarding sociodemographics, medication, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), lipid profiles, and FibroScan with controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) were collected from all participants. The group with hepatic steatosis (CAP≥237 dB/m) had a higher body mass index (BMI), higher TG levels, and TG/HDL-C ratio values. The TG/HDL-C ratio was significantly correlated with CAP values. Hepatic steatosis can be identified using the TG/HDL-C ratio with a cut-off value of 2.83 (sensitivity:72.4%; specificity:71.4%). An elevated TG/HDL-C ratio is associated with a higher risk (OR:6.562; p<0.05) of having hepatic steatosis. The TG/HDL-C ratio is a potential marker to predict NAFLD in T2DM patients
Unraveling spinal cord injury caregiver burden in Indonesia
Diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds significantly influence the caregiver burden of spinal cord injury (SCI) patients, affecting their quality of life (QoL) and the overall care experience. This study was done to identify spinal cord caregivers' QoL in Indonesia through their burden and the variables that influence it. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Dr. Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung, Indonesia, involved 137 primary SCI caregivers. The burden of these caregivers was evaluated using the Indonesian version of the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF questionnaires. The data was analyzed with multiple linear regression and spearman analysis using SPSS version 24. The majority of SCI caregivers have a mild to moderate burden (54.7%). The burden score was significantly correlated, especially with occupational status and the length of interaction each day (p<0.001). It also found a significant with strong negative correlation (referring to the Guilford criteria) between caregiver burden and QoL (r-value −0.750; p-value <0.001). Indonesian caregivers' cultural and economic backgrounds may alleviate their burden in caregiving, but attention to patient occupational status and care duration is crucial to prevent worsening their quality of life, particularly for SCI survivors they care for
