Municipal Solid Waste Management in South Assam: Current trend, Scope and challenges for growing Mini City Silchar, Assam, India.
Municipal solid waste management is a humongous problem for majority of developing countries across the world. Spontaneous commercial, residential and infrastructural development due to population explosion has caused negative impacts on the inhabiting environment. Unplanned townscapes and lack of proper scientific and technical expertise in MSW management has complicated the problems further. In the current paper, we tried to investigate the root cause of such common urban problems considering Silchar Mini City as one of the fastest growing population hubs in south Assam. The population of the city is nearly two lakhs according to the census of 2011, thus generating around 85 MT (metric ton) of Municipal waste every day which consists of house hold waste (50%), market waste (39%), street waste (6%), and other commercial wastes including the E-waste in total (5%). The per capita rate of waste generation is 240-250 gram per day on average. The current study assesses the present trends, scopes and the way forward in sustainable municipal solid waste management in coming times in Silchar City. Such studies should also be undertaken for rapidly developing cities across India to generate a database of city wise waste generation across the country. This would also provide a roadmap for the techniques adopted in sustainable management of the waste
Effect of Nutritional Intervention on Growth of Infants Accompanying Their Mothers in Prison
Infants who accompanied their mothers in prison were vulnerable to the consequence of malnutrition. So, a nutritional intervention program for those infants who deprived of outdoor facilities is a subject of interest. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the effect of nutritional intervention on the growth of infants accompanying their mothers in prison. A quasi-experimental design was used (Pre and post-test). The study was conducted in Qanater Women's Prison in Egypt. A convenience sample of 30 mothers accompanying their infants in the above-mentioned setting was included. Three instruments were used: a structured interview questionnaire, an observational checklist, and anthropometric measurements. The findings of this study revealed that infant growth improved after the implementation of the nutritional intervention. In addition,, there were statistically significant differences regarding mother's knowledge and practices observed on posttest than on pretest. As well as, there were a positive correlation between mother's knowledge, practices, and infant growth. The study concluded that mothers gained more knowledge and had better practices on posttest following the adherence to nutritional intervention. In addition, their infants had better growth after the implementation of nutritional intervention. Therefore, it was recommended that nurse‟s officers should provide mothers in prison with periodical nutritional intervention to sustain their infants' growth. Special provisions must be in place to ensure that the child‟s rights are promoted and protected whilst in prison, Child welfare, rather than prison authorities, should have primary responsibility for making decisions regarding children in prison, and specialists in social work and child development should supervise their care
Review on village/backyard/ poultry production system in Ethiopia
A review was undertaken to obtain the related research results and facts on village/backyard/ poultry production systems in Ethiopia with the aim of bringing synthesized and summarized information to the beneficiaries. Poultry production has a major role in poverty alleviation by means of income generation and household food security. Village/backyard/ chicken production system is characterized by low input and output scavenging, with minimal investment in housing, feeding, watering, and chicken health management systems. The village chicken production system in Ethiopia is extensive and dominated by indigenous chickens that exhibit remarkable adaptation to local environments. Generally, it is concluded that the village/backyard/ chicken production system offers many people the opportunity to improve their livelihoods, suggesting that improvement of the chicken management system, breeding, production environment, farmers‟ access to inputs and markets needs to focus on the back yard chicken production system
Taguchi Philosophy of Engineering Quality
Most technology development engineers use traditional reliability engineering methods to calibrate the objective functions of their new systems to meet various marketing requirements. Quality is related to products and services to customer satisfaction. Cost reduction and quality improvement is vital to business. Therefore it is no surprise that both consumers and management are so obsessed with the term quality that a separate branch of quality engineering has been developed. Quite a few glorified terminologies have cropped up such as total quality management (TQM), Quality Function Development (QFD), ISO9000, Continuous quality improvement or KAIZEN, and more popularly six sigma design. These are management-oriented and rather incomprehensible to an average engineer. In contrast, Taguchi methods are easier to comprehend and adopt. They are also based on some common sense ideas. The management's interest was evoked owing to the claimed economic consequences of Taguchi methods of reduced cost with improved quality and consequent consumer satisfaction
Financial Soundness Of Selected Indian Petroleum Companies Using Altman Z – Score Model
It needs an hour to know the performance of Oil companies namely Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, Bharat Petroleum because the market is having high volatility, through A predictive model created by Edward Altman Z score in the 1960s. This model consists of different financial ratios to ascertain the likelihood of bankruptcy. The present study intends to analyze the financial health of selected oil companies through the application of the Altman z score model. It is found that the financial health of the selected companies understudy is Bharat petroleum corporation is relatively better than Indian oil corporation and Hindustan petroleum
Effect of different levels of feed added coriander (coriandrum sativum) leaves meal on the performance, carcass quality, immune response and blood profile of quails (corturnix cortunix japonica)
An experiment was conducted to study the effect of different levels of feed added Coriander sativum leaf meal (CLM) on the growth performance viz., weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio, carcass characteristics, immune response and some blood parameters of quails. One hundred and eighty (one week) old Japanese quails were used for this study, the birds were reared in a wooden cage with dimensions of 1 × 1 × 0.4 m (length, width, height). They were divided into four dietary groups and each group was subdivided into three replicates of fifteen quails each. The groups were assigned to four diets containing 0, 2.0, 4.0 and 6.0% CLM. Feed and water were provided ad libitum throughout the experimental period which lasted for 8 weeks. The results showed that there was a no significant (P>0.05) difference in body weight, weight gain and feed conversion ratio between treatment groups. The relative weights of the organs examined were not significantly (P>0.05) different across dietary treatments. All the hematological and serum biochemical parameters evaluated: Pack cell volume (PCV), Hemoglobin (Hb), White blood cell (WBC), Mean corpuscular volume (MCV), Mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration(MCHC), Albumin, globulin, Aspartate aminotransferase (ALT), Alkaline phosphatase(ALP), Glucose, Urea serum glutamic oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamic pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) were not significantly (P>0.05) affected by the inclusion of CLM. Significant influences (P<0.05) were observed for immune response and mortality. The results of this experiment demonstrated that CLM can be included up to 6.0% level in quail rations without any adverse effect on growth performance, carcass characteristics and blood profile of birds
Assessment of Constraints and Opportunities of Honey Production in Gombora Haddiya Zone, South Nation Nationality and People Regional State, Ethiopia
The study was conducted in Gombora District, South nation national people regional state, Ethiopia to identify major beekeeping constraints and opportunities. Structured questionnaire was employed for the study. The study used interviews, surveys and visual observation as methods in looking for answer to research questions. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were employed to select 180 beekeepers from two Peasants Association. The collected data were analyzed by using SPSS version 20. The result of the study exposed that the average amount of honey harvested /hive/year from traditional hive, transitional hive and modern hive were 8.22±0.042, 13.83±1.05 and 18.2±2.52 respectively. The mean yield obtained from the three hives were statistically significant at (p < 0.05).The most factors influencing honey pricing in the study area were distance from market( 38%), quality of honey (20%), consumers‟ preference (20%), color (10%), and test of honey (12%).The major constraints to beekeeping activity in the study area were: high cost of modern hives with accessories (1st), shortage of bee forage (2nd), pests and predators (6rd, poising of bee colonies (4th), low quality of honey product (5th) and poor infrastructure development (3th). Regardless of the constraints encountered this sub sector; there are also future opportunities for beekeeping development in the District. These include; presence of huge number of bee colonies, progressively increasing the demand of local honey, presence of beekeepers association and presence of good government policy. The study exposed that the price of honey in the study area is influenced by quality of honey, color, consumers‟ preference, distance from market and test of honey. Extra study is required to evaluation of honey quality in study area; characterize honey beekeeping practice in the study area and major pests, predators and disease of economic importance

Assessment of heavy metals contamination in soil due to leachate migration from open dumpsites in agbor area, delta state. Nigeria
The concentration of heavy metals was studied in the soil samples collected around the municipal solid waste (MSW) open dumpsites in Agbor Area, to understand the heavy metal contamination due to leachate migration from the open dumping sites. The dumpsites receive approximately 300-400 tonnes of municipal solid waste. Solid waste characterization was carried out for the municipal solid waste to know the basic composition of solid waste which is dumped in the dumping site. The heavy metals concentration in the soil samples was analyzed. The heavy metal concentration in the collected soil sample was found in the following order: Fe>Zn>Ni>Cu>Pb>Cr>Cd. The presence of heavy metals in soil samples indicates that there is appreciable contamination of the soil by leaching migration from an open dumping site. However, these pollutants species will continuously migrate and attenuate through the soil strata and after a certain period of time, they might contaminate the groundwater system if there is no action to be taken to prevent this phenomenon
Identification of Genes involved in Postaxial Polydactyly, Sample of FATA territory, Pakistan
Postaxial Polydactyly (PAP) is characterized by fifth digit duplication in hands and/or feet. Two types of PAP including PAP-A, representing the development of well-formed extra digit, and PAP-B, representing the presence of rudimentary fifth digit, have been described. Both isolated and syndromic forms of PAP have been reported. Isolated forms of PAP usually segregate as an autosomal dominant trait and to date four loci have been identified. In the present study, we have described mapping of the first locus of autosomal recessive PAP type A on chromosome 13q13.3–13q21.2 in a consanguineous Pakistani family. In family with autosomal dominant forms of postaxial polydactyly, most of the affected individuals exhibit features representing type A PAP (Zhao et al.,2002; Galjaardet et al.,2003). In the respected family mapped on chromosome 13q13.3– 13q21.2, affected individuals showed the additional features of postaxial polydactyly.Several locus of causative genes are involved in this disease. To check the specified locus we use several microsatellite markers (D13S1246, D13S218, D13S1288, D13S1233, D13S263, D13S1312, D13S153, D13S328, D13S119, D13S632, D13S889,D4S90, D4S2936, D4S111, D4S43, D4S16114, D4S95, D4S127, D4S126, D4S179, D4S432, D4S2957, D4S431, D4S2366, D4S2935, D4S3007, D4S412, D4S3023, D4S2285 ). All the affected individuals showed no homozygosity. Genetic mapping of all the affected individuals showed that noval genes are responsible for the disease. In future, we will work on and try to find out the causative genes
