The Incorporation of Cultural and Religious Diversity in LGBT Policies: Experiences of Queer Migrants from Muslim Backgrounds in Catalonia, Spain
This article reflects on the biases in sexual and gender diversity policies in relation to the axis of cultural and religious diversity in Catalonia (Spain), where these policies have experienced an enormous boost since 2014. The paper aims to analyse the articulation between the experiences of queer migrants from Muslim backgrounds living in Catalonia and the LGBT and intercultural policies. Based on interviews both with queer migrants and people involved in developing public policies, we analyse how these two axes intersect. The approach of policies is mainly monofocal and assimilationist, failing to acknowledge the hybridity of queer migrant experiences. However, we also find examples of policy programmes that adopt an intersectional perspective and embrace hybridity by advancing more inclusive LGBT equality policies. The conclusions highlight two axes of tensions that have emerged in the analysis of the policies: the construction of the figure of the queer person from a Muslim background and the role of the state regarding sexual and gender diversity
Cognitive grammar learning strategies in the acquisition of tense-aspect morphology in L3 Catalan
This study investigates grammar learning strategies and the acquisition of L2 tense-aspect morphology through the retrospective think-aloud processes of a group of L3 learners of Catalan. A total of 18 students of Catalan in a university setting in Catalonia were asked to select one of three tense-aspect forms (preterite, imperfect, and perfect) in a short narrative written in the past. Retrospective think-aloud protocols were used to investigate what they were thinking when they made the decision to choose the appropriate tense-aspect form. A bottom-up analysis identified nine grammar learning strategies that participants used to select the appropriate past tense forms. The results on the frequency of use of the strategies show that they were often used in combination and that the most common ones were translation, aspect, adverbial, and tense strategies. The analysis of strategy use according to type of morphology and selection of the correct form in the narrative showed that strategy use is related both to specific tense-aspect forms as well as to accuracy in the selection of forms
Developing a consensus definition of psychosocial complexity in cancer patients using Delphi methods
Cancer is one of the biggest health challenges of our times, affecting all the personal
areas of a patient. The interrelationships between these areas and the need for multidisciplinary
care require the assessment of psychosocial complexity in cancer patients. The main
aim of this study was to reach a consensus on the general definition of psychosocial complexity
in cancer and its main elements according to the experts in the field
Factors Associated with Dietary Restriction and Emotional and Uncontrolled Eating in Adults from Spanish-Speaking Countries during the COVID-19 Confinement: Results of the CoV-Eat Projec
The first COVID-19 confinement has led to changes in the population’s behaviour. However,
little has been analysed about the changes in eating behaviour beyond the decrease in adherence to
healthy dietary patterns. The aim of the CoV-Eat project was to identify factors related to each of the
following eating behaviours (EB): cognitive restraints (CR), uncontrolled eating (UE), and emotional
eating (EE) in adults from Spanish-speaking countries. Participants completed an anonymous online
survey. EB was assessed using the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire and the scores were classified
into tertiles. Socio-demographic characteristics and lifestyle habits including physical activity, sleep
quality, screen use, smoking consumption, and relationship with food were also collected. A total
of 9849 participants from 21 countries were included in this study. The median of CR, UE, and EE
behaviours was 15, 24, and 9, respectively. We observed that higher age, days of confinement, number
of times leaving home in the last week, changes in sleep quality, and their relationship with food were
negatively associated with CR, EE, and UE, while being a man was positively associated with an
increased in all these EBs. A higher household income was negatively associated with a higher score
of CR, and a higher education level (>primary) was positively associated with a medium score of EE.
Lower physical activity was a factor negatively associated with a medium score of EE and UE. Higher
screen use showed the same negative association for a medium score of EE and UE and a high score
of CR. In addition, higher tobacco consumption was found to be a protective factor against having
a medium or high score of CR and EE. In conclusion, some sociodemographic characteristics and
lifestyle changes may be important factors for EB and should be considered in emergency situations
such as confinement to prevent risky eating behaviour
Parental involvement in early childhood eduction in Catalunya, Spain
In the last 20 years parental involvement has had an increasing interest in Catalunya leading to changing the ECEC setting’s practices and in the promotion of research in this field. International and national research evidenced the importance of parental involvement with their children to promote a healthy development and success in education as well as in family services and schools. For this reason, the ECE curricula includes the importance of working in collaboration with parents, but still there are some challenges to achieve a significant partnership, such as improving teacher training at university level and also changing some conceptions about the teacher’s role with the families. This chapter focuses on the laws, the main family support services to promote parental engagement with the community and the parental involvement in the schools. Some successful strategies are highlighted together with a more detailed project to improve parents-school meetings
