『野生動物をめぐる対立を理解する―生物社会アプローチ』

本書は、人と野生動物の対立（human-wildlife conflict）についての捉え直しを図る論集である。自然科学と社会
科学の境界に位置する学際的研究を紹介する Berghahn Books刊行の論集シリーズの 9冊目にあたる本書では、社
会人類学、科学史、社会心理学、生態地理学など多様な専門をもつ研究者らが集い、執筆を分担している。
human-wildlife conflictとは、野生動物が人間や家畜・農作物に被害を加え、これに対抗して人間が野生動物を
駆除するといった、野生動物と人間が相互に負の影響を与え合う状況を指す語である。自然保護の立場に立つ論者
たちは、こうした負の関係が野生動物保護や環境保全の妨げになることを危惧し、野生動物と人間の対立の緩和を
目指す研究を後押ししてきた。しかし本書は、そうした従来の研究の多くが生態学的分析にもとづく技術的な解決
策の探究に終始してきたことを批判し、より複雑な問題へと目を向けることを促す。野生動物はただ人間と空間を
共有し、物理的な干渉をしあう存在であるだけではなく、人間によって何らかの文脈において意味を付与され、価
値づけられる存在でもある。さらに現場が「厄介」なのは、被害現場や緩和プロセスを行う場が、そうした動物に
対する意味づけの違いを通じて当該地域に関わる人間同士の経済・文化・社会的対立を顕在化させるホットスポッ
トと化しているからなのである。本書は人間 /動物という対立構造にどのような第三項が関わっているのか、それに
よってどのような複雑な関係が作られているのかということをつぶさに見ていくことにより、human-wildlife 
conflictという語の定義自体を問い直していく。
主著者の一人である Hillは、IUCNの SSC（Species Survival Commission）が組織する human-wildlife 
conflictの専門家集団の一員である。本書が示す野生動物との接触を契機とした社会的対立を立体的に捉えていく姿
勢は、動物と人の共生をめぐる政治的議論の現時点での到達点だといえる。
本書は序章と 10 章のケーススタディから構成されている。第 1～ 7章では、野生動物をめぐる対立を紐解く様々
な視点が事例を通して提示され、第 8～ 10 章では、著者らによる被害現場における応用的な実践が記録されている。
以下では、本書を前半と後半に分けて、各章の内容を紹介する。
前半部では、野生動物の被害を緩和するためのマネジメントを契機として生じる人間同士の軋轢への着目である。
第 1章では、社会的な影響力の弱い者たちによる抵抗の手段として野生動物との対立が強調される場面が描かれる。
アフリカでは、住民がゾウによる農作物の損害に対して実被害とは不釣り合いなまでの苦情を寄せる一方、被害対
策への参加要請に対して積極的な働きを返そうとしない。ここでは、野生動物の保全と引き換えに土地の所有権や
狩猟の場の喪失といった不利益を強いられた住民たちによる、野生動物保護団体や政府当局に対する不満の間接的
な表明がみられる。第 2章で取り上げられるのは、被害緩和策の失敗が人間集団間の社会的分断をもたらしたケー
スである。日本のサルによる農作物荒らし現場では、サルに定期的に餌を与える公園を設置することで、農地から
サルを遠ざける対応策がとられる。公園は観光資源化され盛況を博したものの、依然として猿害が減らないことの
責任を農家が観光事業者に押し付けることになってしまったという。
ノルウェーにおける絶滅したオオカミの復活を扱う第 3章では、これを「本物の野生の象徴」として歓迎する自

然保護推進派と、先祖伝来の土地が野生に戻ってしまうことの象徴としてみなす地方労働者階級の社会的対立が描
かれる。野生動物をめぐる想像力の異なりが人間同士の分断を生むという構図は、第 4章で検討される野生アナグ
マ撲滅キャンペーンについてもみられる。牛結核が流行したイギリスでは、アナグマが蔓延を媒介する「害獣」で
あるとして駆除を求める一派とそれに反対する一派が対立する。こうしたアナグマの善悪をめぐる言説が科学的理
解によってだけでなくイギリスにおけるアナグマのメディア表象や文化表象の歴史的変遷に沿って構築されてきた
ことが論じられている。野生動物をめぐって引き起こる人間同士の分断は、動物や人間存在を含む世界認識の異な
りに起因する場合もある。第 5章では、アマゾンの先住民の動物との関係と、自然保護理念との齟齬が描かれる。
狩猟動物を自分たちと同じ感覚を共有する他者とみなす先住民たちは、シャーマンによる交渉や応酬的な狩猟行為
を通じた社会関係を動物たちと結んできた。一方自然保護の文脈では、ヨーロッパ＝アメリカ社会の自然 /文化の二
元論的な見方に基づいた「人間と動物の対立」という構図で関係が把握される。環境保全・獣害対策に協働の姿勢
をみせる先住民たちは環境活動家と目的を必ずしも共有していない。彼らは環境保全や獣害対策への協力を、地域
社会のニーズや生活の変化への適応策と捉えているという。第 6章では、こうした人間側の価値志向の異なりが社
会心理学的モデルに基づいて分析される。アメリカのワシントン州で個体数を回復させるオオカミに対する態度に
は、自然や動物への支配主義的志向と野生動物に人間と対等な権利を認めようとする平等主義的志向の二つが影響
する。この志向は、都市化や所得の増加、教育水準の上昇と関連して前者から後者へと変化するという。ここで示
唆される志向の移り変わりという主題は、第 7章で詳しく展開されている。著者は、ウガンダの国立公園の隣接地
域で小規模農業に従事する人びとを対象に、農作物を荒らす種にどのような感情を抱いているかについて、17 年の
期間を空けて二度聞き取りを行う。結果、当初悪印象を持たれていたカワイノシシが、現在はそれほど強く敵視さ
れなくなるなどの変化が見られたが、ヒヒに対する敵対心は変化しなかったという。その背景として、狩猟の合法
化により食の禁忌（カワイノシシは好んで食べるがヒヒは食べない）をめぐる位置付けの違いが被害認識に影響し
た可能性が指摘される。上記 7つの論考では、それぞれ当該社会の権力構造（第 1章）や観光資源化（第 2章）、田
園景観の認識（第 3章）やメディアへの信頼（第 4章）、世界認識（第 5章）や社会・経済的地位（第 6章）、資源
化の可否（第 7章）などをめぐるさまざまな分断が、野生動物との接触を契機として人間集団のなかに生じてきた
ことが描かれている。
本書の後半では、ここまで描かれてきた社会的対立を防ぎつつ効果的な被害緩和を行うためのアプローチに焦点
が当てられる。第 8章で著者らが提唱する CCT（Conservation Conflict Transformation）アプローチは、技術的
解決のみに焦点を当てた従来の介入策と異なり、対立構造の根底にある人間内部の社会的対立の力学を認識し、そ
の変容を通してより良い管理法を編み出していくための枠組みを提供するものである。第 9・10 章では、実験的な
被害対策の導入過程が検討される。現地農民主体の被害対策を取り上げた第 9章では、侵入しやすい動物の種類や
栽培種、気候条件との兼ね合い、メンテナンスのしやすさなどを加味しながら、農民たちが家族ごとに異なる抑止
策を導入する過程が描かれる。事態の変化に合わせて自分たちで再調整可能な対策法を、思案過程を共有しつつ導
入することで、村内で対応の差について対立を生じさせることなく、辛抱強く対策を続行できたという。第10章では、
GIS技術を用いた野生動物による農作物被害に対する各地域の脆弱性を示すマップ作成の有効性を考察している。
マップの作成は、潜在的な問題を利害関係者間で視覚的に共有することを可能にし、議論の焦点を対立から解決策
の検討へと向かわせるよう貢献することが指摘された。
本書の意義は、環境の不可逆的な変容に対する危機意識の高まりに呼応した 20 世紀後半の自然保護礼賛時代を経
た、野生動物との共生をめぐる現代社会特有の衝突の現場を巧みに描出している点にある。本書が描くのは、自然
保護区の設置など調和的な種の共存を目指す運動が進む裏で、野生動物との以前と異なる接触や軋轢が生じたり、
人間社会側の合意形成や実際の遂行過程が難航したりする様子だ。このことは、私たち人間の住まう環境をどのよ
うな場と捉え、どのように利用するのか、そして生きる場を共有する野生動物をどのようなものとして認めていく
のかという問題に対する正解が、容易に一つには決められないという事実を改めて喚起する。
そうであればこそ、本書が野生動物保護と生物多様性の実現を最終的な帰着点にして、そのための第一歩として
衝突の現場を眼差すことに終始している点には不満が残る。本書の断片的だが豊かな事例はむしろ、ときに意図せ
ざる接触を伴いつつ共に生きることの困難を様々な角度から認めたうえで、保護一辺倒の枠組みで考えることを留

保しその可能性について再考するための重要な参照点とすべきである。
本書の刊行後 7年を経てポストコロナ時代を迎えた社会は、他者との接触に伴うリスクに一層自覚的になりつつ
ある。人獣共通感染症の報告が相次ぎ、野生動物との接触を衛生的な観点から危険視する声も高まっている。共生
をめぐるハードルがますます高まる今、本書は読むべき一冊である。

全国消費実態調査における世帯主の
職業別集計の代表性について
─ 特に勤労者世帯について ─

要旨
　本稿は全国消費実態調査が世帯の選択の偏りを生むことなく，代表性を持って結
果を示しているか，母集団であるはずの国勢調査と比較することで，確認するもの
である。世帯を対象とするこの種の調査では二人以上の勤労者世帯が選ばれやすく，
収入の把握を嫌う富裕層や，また勤労者世帯でも多忙な貧困層が調査からもれてい
るのではないか，との根強い疑問がある。
　今回確認したのは，一見全国消費実態調査の勤労者世帯は過大のように見えるが，
おそらく国勢調査では勘定されるものの全国消費実態調査のような調査は回答が極
めて困難な高齢者の増大という要因があり，その要因を別にすれば「勤労者世帯」
というくくりである限り，比較的正確な反映となっているであろうことである。と
はいえ，勤労者世帯内部のどういった人々が有効な回答者となっているか，という
点については明らかにすることが出来ず，課題として残っている。

1．はじめに
　2014 年まで長く継続され，今日「全国家計構造調査」として改革されている「全国消費実
態調査」は，5 年に 1 度の大規模構造調査であり，家計の収支構造を長期にわたり分析する重
要な統計資料である価値は今後も失われないであろうと思われる。調査方法は家計簿に類した
調査票に購買記録を記し（世帯員二人以上世帯については 2 ヶ月，単身世帯については 1 ヶ月），ま
た世帯員の就業状態，年収などの家計属性を記載する必要がある。このため調査対象に選ばれ
ても，回答にかかる労力等を嫌った人たちの協力が得られなかったなどの理由で偏りが生じて
いるのではないかとの懸念があった。
　また，定期的に収入が得られることから勤労者世帯にのみ収入調査があり，全国消費実態調
査をもとに家計調査の設計，調査対象の選定などに影響があると考えられることから，結果と
して，家計管理能力を持つ，専業主婦のいる世帯，中でも世帯員 2 人以上の勤労者世帯が選
ばれがちなのではないかと考えられてきた。
　筆者は 20 年ほど前から所得分布把握のひとつの方法として，全国消費実態調査も使えるの
ではないか，と考え，いくつかの比較の試みを行った 1）。そこで見ても，一般的な労働者の所
得分布と比べて，全国消費実態調査は他に比べて賃金水準が高く格差が少ないという，明らか
な特徴が見られた。
　もちろんそれには当然に起こりうる理由がある。①世帯単位での調査であり，世帯員は世帯
に収入を入れる限りで把握される。②同じく世帯単位であるから，世帯所得の場合複数の世帯
員の所得の合算にともなう平均化作用がある。③世帯主の所得の場合，特性として比較的高所
得で安定した賃金を得ているものが世帯主に選ばれる効果がある。
　全国消費実態調査は消費構造の大局を見るためのものであり，その限りで差し支えなければ
よいという考えもある。ところが，近年では格差拡大や経済動向の変動が確実に消費に影響を
与えていると言われている。貧困層の増大や長らく続く景気の停滞，急激な物価高とめまぐる
しく変わる経済情勢の中でも，確かに財，サービスの全部が売れなくなるわけではない。意外
な流行が生まれている可能性があるが，それを把握することが難しいほど，標本が代表性を
持っていないとすれば，問題と言わなければならない。
　本稿では，回答世帯の集団特性を母集団である国勢調査と比較して，最終年の 2014 年調査
について検証した。以下，全国消費実態調査における勤労者世帯の定義とその調査の意義，そ
の標本抽出の母集団である国勢調査との対比を試みる。

2．全国消費実態調査における勤労者世帯
　全国消費実態調査における世帯職業分類は表 1 のようになっている。
　「勤労者」には英訳として worker が当てられているように，通常の経済概念で言う労働者
であり，個人企業，法人企業，非営利企業，政府・地方公共団体等と雇用関係にあるもののう
ち，法人経営者とみなされる役員等を除くものである。調査実務上単身世帯と二人以上世帯と
は調査方法が異なり，勤労者世帯とそれ以外の世帯とは調査項目も異なる。二人以上勤労者世
帯で調査され公表される項目は多く，集計表のままでも様々な用途があるため，広く用いられ
てきたが，ここ半世紀の間，世帯員二人以上で世帯主がはっきりしている，さらに言えば，収
支の中身を見ると，比較的安定した世帯がおおい，そういったモデルがどこまで一般性を持つ
のか，疑問が出されるところでもある。
　標本調査では標本設計の段階で完全に母集団に比例させることができないだけでなく，実査
段階で選ばれたものの調査できない世帯がかなり出るため，補欠候補があらかじめ用意されて
いるが，さらにそれでも数が足りないということも起こりうる。こうして発生した予定された
抽出率と，実際に得られた標本数をもとに計算される抽出率の違いを補正する作業が，抽出率
調整である。
　全国消費実態調査のような構造調査では抽出率調整が正しく行われていることは重要であ
る。全国消費実態調査では世帯類型別，また表記項目別に多くの表が公表されているので，一

見すると全体の抽出率調整後の比率がわかりにくくなっている。今回，消費構造の最近 20 年
ほどの変化を分析する準備として，まず，すべての世帯の中で抽出率調整が行われているのか
を確認する必要があった。この検証を行ったのが，表 2 である。
　最後 2 行（全国消費実態調査の第 43 表）は世帯主の年齢別の収入と支出を示すのが目的で，
全世帯，勤労者世帯について示されており，これが単身世帯を含むのかどうかは，実際に計算
するまでは不明であった。というのは，第 36 表中の単身世帯表は単身者だけの簡便な表章が
されており，20 才から 25 才，25 才から 30 才と言った区分もなく，30 才未満から始まって
いたからである。また，男子単身と女子単身に分かれており，合計が示されていなかったの
で，ここでの数字は筆者が合計値を計算したものである。なお，個別表の合計（第 43 表の総世
帯数）と第 36 表の総世帯数（36 表のうち勤労者世帯（男女計）の下の（以上合計））が異なってい
る理由は不明である。（抽出率調整後の比率は整合している）。
　勤労者世帯は全体の半数強となっており，他の世帯類型が様々なものの合計であることを考
えれば，典型性だけでなく代表性も持つものとして考えてよいように思われる。ただし，それ
は全国消費実態調査が正しく母集団である国勢調査を反映している限りである。このため，ほ
ぼ同じ定義として，国勢調査における役員を除く雇用者と対応させ，これが世帯主である数を
数えて，その比率を出すことにした。その最後の結果は表 2 の右半分に示しているが，2010
年国勢調査から，世帯分布を求めた過程を，以下，3 節で説明する。
3．国勢調査における世帯主の労働力状態及び従業上の地位
　2014 年全国消費実態調査の調査世帯母集団は 2010 年国勢調査に基づくものと思われる。
そこでまず，2010 年国勢調査から，世帯分布を見てみよう 。表 3 は国勢調査の定義から全国

消費実態調査の勤労者世帯を求めた過程の最後の結果を示している。
　国勢調査原表の第 14 表は労働力状態及び従業上の地位を示したもので，まず人口，労働力
人口，就業者等の総数があり，次に世帯内での地位区分があって，世帯主であるものの数がわ
かる。（一般世帯以外は除かれている）。単独世帯では必ず世帯主となるので，1 人の労働力の状
態をそのまま勘定する。また，役員以外の雇用者という概念がなく雇用者の個別分類を足すこ
とで求めることになる。
　この結果，非労働力人口を含む総世帯主のうち，46.1% が役員以外の雇用者であることが
わかった。表 3 の中で四角く囲んで示した部分の最右列である。
　ここで表 2 に戻り，2010 年国勢調査，2014 年全国消費実態調査の両者を比較しよう。確か
に国勢調査に比べて全国消費実態調査では勤労者世帯の比率はわずかずつ増えている 2）。しか
し，さきほどの予想とは異なり，二人以上世帯で増えたというわけではなく，むしろ単身世帯
での増加が比率としては大きい。考えられる原因としては，調査に応じかねる高齢者世帯の存
在であろう。心の衰えが見られる単独生活老人に限らず，全国消費実態調査のような調査はよ
ほど几帳面な人でないと一人暮らしでの回答は難しい。普段から何らかの手段で記録を残して
おく単身世帯がむしろ二人以上世帯以上に積極的に回答に応じることが出来るのかもしれない。

4．結論
　本稿は全国消費実態調査で典型的に利用される勤労者世帯がはたして母集団たる国勢調査と
整合的か，確認するのが目的だった。その結果，分類できる比率で見る限り，意外に正確に反
映されていると結論できた。
　ただし，この結論は「勤労者世帯」という範疇で偏りがないことを示すだけであり，勤労者
世帯内部のどういった人々が有効な回答者となっているか，という点については，なお残され
た課題である。

　執筆の機会を与えてくださった田中教授に感謝しなければならないが，何より，この春にお
約束していた「都市計画法と地方自治体の責任」というテーマで書けなかったことが残念であ
る。何年かかろうと別の場で必ずや発表することをお誓い申し上げる。
　田中教授との縁が特に深くなったのは，大阪市立大学に転属し，勤続 10 年でようやく私が
主催する研究会をささやかながら開くことが出来，そこに田中教授をゲストスピーカーにお招
きしたあたりからだろうと思う。その後，今度は出版を具体的に考えなければならなくなった
私は，田中教授が当時 5 年以上継続して主催していた研究会に大学院でほぼ同期の仲間と集
まり，研究を定期的に発表して検討して頂くことにした。自分の性格から否定的評価が続くと
出版を諦めることが予想できたからである。
　田中教授にはもちろん自分自身の研究交流という目的もあっただろうが，定期的に弟子でも
ない人々を誘って研究会を開催するというのは並大抵の努力でできることではない。感謝の言
葉しかない次第である。この研究会は形を変えながら今も続いている。

ののこれらをつなぐことが出来ず，就業者や，世帯数で国勢調査と比率に違いがある印象があった。
今回の検証でその当時の試算が何らかの誤解，誤計算によるものであることが確認できた。

Abstract 
This paper reviews Joleen Blom’s Video Game Characters and Transmedia Storytelling: The Dynamic Character, 
published by Amsterdam University Press in 2023. 
1 Introduction 
From the time Marsha Kinder defined transmedia to 
explain her son’s interactive engagement with television 
and games in her book Playing with Power (1991) and 
towards Henry Jenkins’ popularization of the term in 
Convergence Culture (2006), much of the literature on 
transmedia texts tend to circulate around how narratives 
can spread across multiple media. By extension, much of 
games studies’ examination also reflects this focus on 
narratives, whether this research involves narratologists 
discussing world-building (Ryan 2015), or how players 
negotiate canon in Star Wars games (Parker 2013). This 
focus on narrative is specifically tailored to help theorize 
issues and practices within game cultures and fandoms 
within North American contexts. Analyses on the anime 
media mix (Eiji 2010; Ito 2011; Steinberg 2012) and otaku 
studies (Azuma 2009), which have provided important case 
studies on how companies such as Kadokawa create 
characters to spread across multiple media, tend to be siloed 
into Japanese studies. But this begs the question: how can 
a character-centric analysis affect our understanding of 
transmedia narrative franchises and their characters? This 
is exactly what Joleen Blom explores in her book 
Videogame Characters and Transmedia Storytelling: The 
Dynamic Character. In the first chapter of her book, she 
outlines her book’s three main goals. Firstly, she “offers a 
concrete study of characters in our contemporary media 
ecology” (p. 13), arguing that scholars study characters on 
their own instead of studying them merely as parts of 
storyworlds. Secondly, she provides “a framework for 
understanding how a character’s complex identity emerges 
over different works, while rejecting the ideal of narrative 
continuity” (p. 14). Thirdly, her book argues for different 
forms of player agency “over a myriad of game characters” 
instead of just player characters (p. 14). With these three 
goals and points in mind, Blom’s diverse   
theorization of characters provides a rich, multifaceted 
examination of characters while being accessible to those 
with minimal experiences with these theorizations and 
media environments. These theorizations open up multiple 
future points of analysis to consider, especially for   
scholars of Japanese games, which I explore throughout 
this review. 
2 Transmedia texts and Media mixes 
Blom’s first two chapters focus on providing an extensive 
overview of the literature on transmedia texts to lay out her 
argument towards character-centric analysis. In the first 
chapter, she critiques predominantly North American 
theorizations of transmedia text, and points out how the 
emphasis on overarching narratives and storyworlds tend to 
restrict analyses of characters as mere parts of storyworlds. 
Her second chapter extends her critique by summarizing 
works from authors theorizing the anime media mix, such 
as Eiji Ōtsuka, Hiroki Azuma and Go Ito, and integrating 
these to her framework for analyzing game characters. 
Blom’s review, while extensive, is highly accessible, 
especially with her uses of popular examples such as 
Sherlock Holmes and Batman to explain terms such as 
kyara. In my own classes, many of my students tend to 
struggle when reading translated essays by media mix 
authors such as Ōtsuka and Azuma. Blom’s second chapter 
is thankfully one that I can happily recommend to some of 
these students given that Blom manages to explain the 
media contexts wherein these theorizations emerged from 
using popular examples. I do think this kind of accessibility 
is key, especially for educators who wish to motivate 
students to read beyond Henry Jenkins’ analysis of the 
Matrix franchise in Convergence Culture. 
3 Dynamic Game Characters and Intellectual 
Property 
Chapters three and four elaborate on various types of 
dynamic game characters and how companies control these 
characters through intellectual property. In chapter three, 
Blom explores three types of game characters: ludic agents, 
narrative agents and performative agents. She utilizes case 
studies of Legend of Zelda’s Link, Mass Effect’s 
Commander Shepard, and Animal Crossing’s Tom Nook 
and villager characters to help illustrate these three types. 
Chapter four continues these examinations of character 
types but focuses on how companies utilize intellectual 
property to enforce narratives on these characters to control 
how these characters are disseminated and read. The 
multiplicity of Blom’s examples helps demonstrate how

intellectual property as a form of control operates through 
transmedia texts. Nonetheless, given the multinational 
nature of game companies (Consalvo 2006), it is also 
important to point out how such control could become even 
more restrictive, especially in the context of platform 
imperialism (Jin 2017), and moral panics (Yano 2004). 
Expanding scholarship on game localization (O’Hagan and 
Magiron 2013) can also provide further ways intellectual 
property control can manifest on characters. Blom’s 
exploration of various characters allows a great start to 
these conversations on intellectual property, and scholars 
could definitely build on her work by taking these various 
contexts in mind. Moreover, a historical account of how 
intellectual property has been enforced on characters could 
be useful. Building from Blom’s examination of Mass 
Effect, for example, it should be noted that earlier versions 
of the third game created divisive discussions in its fan 
community, resulting in a large online fan protest (Tassi 
2012). Many of the discussions on Mass Effect’s endings 
revolved around player agency on characters players loved, 
particularly players’ versions of Commander Shepard. 
Bioware has since released an extended ending, which has 
been incorporated in newer releases of the game (Koch 
2021), but these accounts also demonstrate how 
participatory cultures work in negotiating discourses on 
player agency on characters and how games and their 
characters are inherently unstable and mutable objects 
(Newman 2012). 
4 Systems of Affection 
In chapter five, Blom describes what she calls the “system 
of affection,” which she defines as “procedural ludic 
process that allows the player to create and shape 
relationships between and with dynamic game characters” 
(p. 127). Blom explains that these systems are created to 
enable parasocial relationships with characters. Given how 
sparse the literature games and affect still is, and how much 
of the existing work on affect tends to focus on game 
interfaces (Anable 2018), the analysis of affect in 
characters helps expand existing theories on affect in games. 
To show how systems of affection work, Blom examines 
dating systems in Persona 5 and Hades. Her analysis of 
Persona 5’s use of “confidants” demonstrates how 
heteronormativity is enforced through these systems. In 
comparison, her analysis of Hades demonstrates that while 
some systems may allow same-sex relationships and 
polyamory, these additional options do not do anything to 
dismantle systems and mechanics that are heteronormative 
to begin with. This is overall an important critique on how 
companies tend to approach diversity with add-queerness-
and-stir types of options. One thing to also consider would 
be what changing discussions of diversity do to characters, 
and what these performative forms of implementing 
diversity mean especially in the larger discursive context of 
the biopolitics of predominantly queer fandoms (Floegel 
2021). Bo Ruberg’s (2019) challenge to locate queerness 
“beneath the surface of digital games from their earliest 
forms” (p. 209) also remains relevant in the context of 
examining dating systems. While Blom’s case studies do 
provide a good framework and systems analysis in 
examining changing discourses on sexuality in games, 
future game studies work could also do well to trace the 
influence of queer creators and their communities in the 
historization of dating systems and otaku cultures (Ernest 
Dit Alban 2022).5 Dynamic Game Characters in 
Fighting Games 
Chapter Six examines characters in fighting games. 
Blom’s close readings of characters in Soul Caliber VI, 
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Marvel vs. Capcom 
Infinite show various transmedia techniques companies 
utilize to port characters to a genre of games where 
narrative continuity is not always necessary.  This 
use of mixed examples is important, especially in 
demonstrating how the concept of kyara can be applied 
to characters with North American or European origins, 
such as Geralt of Rivia or Marvel characters. These 
analyses of characters in fighting games could also prove 
useful in understanding player cultures in fighting games, 
given how norms within such communities hinge on 
understanding special moves or attacks by these 
characters (Harper 2014; Johnson and Woodcock 2017). 
6 Future Work on Dynamic Game Characters 
Finally, in her last chapter, Blom suggests areas of future 
work on dynamic game characters which include 
character monetization, increasing diversity in romances 
and the hybrid realities of characters, especially citing 
the case of VTubers. These are helpful suggestions, 
especially with new research on skins,  gatcha games 
and loot boxes (Shibuya, et al 2019; Woods 2022), and 
more research on dating games and queer play 
(Schaufert 2018; Sullivan et al. 2023). 
7 Conclusion 
Overall, Blom’s examination of dynamic game 
characters supplies a comprehensive yet accessible 
exploration of dynamic game characters. Through her 
use of multiple theorizations, particularly from  media 
mix studies, and through various case studies, she 
delivers a challenge to predominant North American 
theorizations of transmedia texts that tend to narrowly 
center on narrative continuity. It opens up a number of 
potential work, not only in game studies, but also in fan 
studies and player studies, especially in theorizing player 
agency with characters and in exploring other case 
studies of how players negotiate their ownership and 
understandings of characters
