When the Future was Infinitely Open: On Absence and Presence of Nostalgia in Hannah Black’s Tuesday or September or the End
This article engages with the question of nostalgia through analyzing Hannah Black’s speculative novella Tuesday or September or The End (2021). In her book, Black describes how subjects living amid temporal stagnation and crises of future-making seek relief through participation in an uprising that aims to bring down a neoliberal government and turn the city of New York into a commune. Thinking with Mark Fisher’s (2012) work on hauntology and Bernard Stiegler’s (1998 [1996]) writing on protentional temporalities, I set out to develop ways to attend to Black’s interest to underpin specific forms of nostalgia, or the lack thereof, that intensify projections into the imminent future. I show how Black operationalizes her own nostalgic attitude towards an unsuccessful revolt to construct a working model of future-hauntology and shift away from the looping nostalgia for cultural and social forms of the past that impede future-making
It is presented an analysis of the expansion and development of preschool education (early childhood education) in Portugal after 50 years of the democratic revolution of April 25th. It is emphasized the important effort towards achieving present 93% coverage. It is described the legislative process, the creation of Curriculum Guidelines in an exemplary process of public consultation and negotiation. It is affirmed a “unique pedagogical supervision” for all national networks. Questions are developed about the limitations of expansion and about the fragilities of the “building” of early childhood education in Portugal Special attention is paid to the non-policies for ages zero do three. Considerations and recommendations are presented.
According to UNESCO (2023), global conflicts arise where there is little intercultural dialogue, highlighting the importance of inclusive educational environments. Although Portugal has adopted intercultural policies since the 1990s, their implementation faces challenges, evidenced by gaps in educational research (National Education Council, 2020). This article presents a snapshot of a case study conducted in two secondary schools in the city of Porto: one in Porto Oriental and the other in Porto Occidental; both were awarded the Intercultural School Seal, a distinction that recognizes good educational practices. The aim of this text was to analyze teachers’ perceptions of cultural diversity in these schools. The qualitative research was based on legislation, literature review, and questionnaires. The results reveal the dynamics between normative principles and their practice, the intercultural models adopted, and the concepts of cultural diversity. Understanding diversity is associated with nationality and language. This can perpetuate stereotypes and structural inequalities, challenging the principles of intercultural education. To foster effective improvements, it is crucial to enhance clarity and coherence in the formulation and implementation of policiesSegundo a UNESCO (2023), conflitos globais ocorrem onde há pouco diálogo intercultural, realçando a importância de ambientes educacionais inclusivos.

Introduction: Respiratory complications are the second most frequent complications in the immediate postoperative setting in the post-anaesthesia care unit. Capnography is a non-invasive method for monitoring the partial pressure of expired carbon dioxide, providing nurses with extraordinarily important data. This allows for early decision-making and intervention. Objective: To map the scientific knowledge on the benefits of using capnography in a post- -anaesthetic care unit. Material and methods: A scoping review was carried out according to the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, based on the research question: “What are the benefits of using capnography in a post-anaesthesia care unit on a person who has undergone surgery?” The search was carried out in the electronic databases MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane databases review, Pubmed and Scopus preview, in December 2022. The articles were selected according to the following eligibility criteria: adults aged 19 or over, with no maximum age limit, who had been through surgery and extubated in the immediate postoperative period; primary studies, theoretical articles, literature reviews (English, Spanish and Portuguese), regardless of the year of publication, published in journals, with access to the full text and grey literature. Articles where the following populations were excluded: people with tracheal intubation and on mechanical ventilatory support. Results: Fourteen articles published between 2008 and 2021 were included. The information obtained was grouped into five categories: detection of respiratory events; early and rapid detection of adverse events; support for hypoventilation correction interventions; determining the effectiveness of ventilation of users/patients undergoing oxygen therapy and evaluating lung perfusion. Conclusion: Capnography could be an effective resource for nurses to use when providing post-anaesthetic care. Training on this subject should be given to perioperative nurses. This complementary monitoring method carries extreme importance for early detection and management of complications in the immediate postoperative period, potentially being relevant for decision-making in nurses’ clinical practice.
Reflections on Technique in "A Cut-Conversation on Techno-Aesthetics"
ABSTRACT The observation, or invitation, from Gilbert Simondon’s (unsent) letter to Jacques Derrida, that “[c]ertain aesthetic objects call for a technical analysis,” encapsulates not only the ambitions of A Cut-Conversation on Techno-Aesthetics by Catarina Patrício & João Alves, but also those of the scholars it places in conversation, and indeed what we attempt to sketch in the following review. We turn to the audiovisual essay as both a technical and aesthetic object, parsing its approach and form through the lens of both the avant-garde style and Simondon’s concern with the operational. In doing so, we aim to offer some initial provocations for how Walter Benjamin, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, and Simondon could enrich thinking on contemporary techno-aesthetic questions through the kinds of “cut-up” conversations wherein, by making a “cut into the present, the future bleeds out” (Burroughs in Quedear, 2011).
