António Soares dos Reis and Augustus Saint-Gaudens: an artistic friendship
António Soares dos Reis and Augustus Saint-Gaudens enjoyed a close friendship in Paris (1868-70) and Rome (1871-72), about which little is known. There are no extant letters between the two sculptors and few references to their relationship in published or archival sources. Some conclusions may be posited through their training, shared experiences, and mutual friends. This paper traces the time that the two artists spent together through the lens of Saint-Gaudens, an artist of French-Irish parentage who would become the leading American sculptor of his day. It examines concurrent work on Soares dos Reis’s O Desterrado (1872) and Saint-Gaudens’s Hiawatha (1871-72; carved 1874)
Hic et Nunc. Critical Elements for a Techno-Aesthetics of Performance
This study aims to show under what conditions it is possible to use Simondon\u27s "techno-aesthetics" to think about performance art. After stating two series of difficulties concerning on the one hand the programmatic dimension of Simondon\u27s "techno-aesthetics" and the problem of the privilege granted to the object; and on the other hand the problem of technique in performance; this article first proposes to replace Simondon\u27s proposition in a short history of techno-aesthetics in philosophy. It then presents an analysis of Simondon\u27s main text on techno-aesthetics. Finally, it seeks to define the main elements of a techno-aesthetics of performance. It is a question of proposing an introduction to techno-aesthetics that completes previous works

The article proposes a theoliterary reading of the work The Plumed Serpent by David Herbert Lawrence. It is, in fact, a theological-political utopia, which seeks a restoration of religious experience that is partly syncretic, as a prophetic critique of colonialism. In this sense, revisiting this work can fuel a decolonial theological reflection, which allows us to rethink the place of religion in relation to culture and human experience in general.L\u27article propose une lecture théolittéraire de l’ouvrage Le Serpent à plumes de David Herbert Lawrence. (Too) many policies under one roof? About the integration of competition law enforcement and sectoral regulation within one authority
The traditional institutional model of a competition agency has assumed entrusting competition protection to a single authority. Over time, more and more often national competition authorities are being entrusted not only with competition enforcement but also with other functions (tasks). And the tendency to increasingly entrust competition authorities with additional roles not related to competition policy may seem worrying, as there may be a risk of pushing competition protection to the background. This article is going to reflect upon the relevant changes after the enlargement of the European Union (2004) and the current situation of selected competition authorities in this context. This contribution will explore the topic in relation to the main models of multifunctional competition authorities entrusted with sectoral regulation and examine authorities which combine competition enforcement with sectoral regulation in infrastructure industries. The article will also take into account that public enforcement of the prohibition of unfair trading practices provided for in Directive 2019/633 (“UTP Directive”), and limited to the agri-food market, was assigned to competition authorities (in line with the European Commission’s suggestion), which is the case of almost half of the EU Member States. It will attempt at the identification of advantages and disadvantages of entrusting competition authorities with additional sectoral regulation functions and discuss whether Directive 2019/1 (“ECN+ Directive”) may serve as a cure for disadvantages of adding not related objectives, such as overwhelming numbers of tasks and lacking resources, including human resources or a relatively small part of budget dedicated to competition enforcement. The research methods employed in this article include, first, a doctrinal legal method, second, systemic and teleological approaches, and, last, a comparative analysis
“Suffered Side by Side”: Dynamics of Trauma and Nostalgia in Post-Communist Romania
How do trauma and nostalgia interact in Romania today? What stories about the communist past do their discourses enable? In the wake of 1989 up until today, the trauma-of-oppression narrative has dominated public and official discourses as the legitimate framework to work through the communist past. Conversely, nostalgia for everyday life under communism has been dismissed as morally dangerous due to its alleged lack of historical rigour. Despite recent diversifications in the Romanian memory landscape, trauma and nostalgia are still pitted against each other. As a result, not only does the official mnemonic framework invalidate nostalgia as a mode of narrating the everyday communist past, thus erasing the complexity of the communist experience, but it also precludes sociocultural expressions of the trauma of transition. This article challenges the binary logic of trauma and nostalgia through a close reading of close-ups in Metrobranding (2010), a documentary that investigates the relationship between disappearing communist brands and the 1950s-1960s generation of the Romanian working class. By showing close-ups of former factory employees handling derelict communist products, Metrobranding displays and co-curates the everyday material heritage in collaboration with the film’s protagonists. It is through close-ups, which produce fragmentation and closeness, that the film interlaces trauma and nostalgia. This way, Metrobranding prompts the audience to think of nostalgia as predicated on personal and collective traumatisations elicited by the regime change.
