Life alongside food: Food practices and affective memories amongst immigrant chefs

Food has great symbolic power in human life, especially for those involved in migratory movements. In contexts of displacement, food performs a bonding role between individuals and their memories, produces a sense of belonging through affective connections between people and places, and operates as a tool for identity negotiation. For professional cooks who immigrate to work in international restaurants, symbolic aspects are not excluded from their daily practices. Besides building relationships with food through professional training and expertise, chefs are people who have chosen to share their lives alongside ingredients and recipes. As such, their practice is informed by various symbolic and cultural aspects that precede the experience inside the professional environment, such as affective memories of homemade cooking and skills learned in the domestic setting. Seeking to explore the symbolic dimensions of culinary practices within narratives of displacement, this paper discusses the results of an ethnographic research developed in 2019 with immigrant chefs in an Argentinian restaurant located in Vitória, Brazil. Guided by Tim Ingold’s notion of life as a trajectory of movement and the Spinozian concept of affect, this paper investigates the role of memories in cooking practices, the influence of domestic practices in professional environments, the food categories chefs create based on their experiences, and the role of affects in professional cooking settings.

Evolução e estado atual da jurisprudência sobre o direito ao recurso e a dupla conforme no processo penal

The article analyzes the evolution of the right to appeal and the double conformity in Portuguese criminal procedure since 1987. It examines the successive legislative reforms of Article 400 of the Criminal Procedure Code and the decisive influence of the Constitutional Court’s case law. The paper highlights the various normative and jurisprudential shifts on this issue up to the most recent legislative amendment, introduced by Law No. 94/2021, which enshrines the current jurisprudential view. The study underscores the tension between case law and the legislature and shows how criminal procedural law is built within a field of interpretive dispute, where jurisprudence, far from being static, serves as a space of hermeneutic contestation in the formation of criminal procedural law.O artigo analisa a evolução do direito ao recurso e da dupla conforme no processo penal português desde 1987.

The principle of sincere cooperation as institutional bridge between competition and data protection law?

In digital markets, personal data is increasingly monetized. As a result, the areas of competition and data protection law collide and the competences of enforcers of these fields of law (i.e. competition and data protection authorities) also overlap. These overlapping competences are not problematic per se but trigger a need for cross-disciplinary cooperation between data protection and competition authorities. Despite this need for cooperation, the EU framework does not provide any specific rules on the interaction between competition and data protection authorities and the CJEU derives certain obligations to cooperate from the principle of sincere cooperation. This paper assesses whether this approach is apt to facilitate cooperation between competition and data protection authorities in the EU. To this end, the paper studies the need for cooperation, the (lack of) existing frameworks for cooperation and the relevance of the principle of sincere cooperation. Furthermore, by identifying the main gaps and open questions associated with the institutional framework, the paper uncovers existing problems relating to cross-disciplinary cooperation between data protection and competition authorities. The absence of a forum for cooperation and the lack of a legal basis to share information are major problems posing obstacles to effective cross-disciplinary cooperation. The EU legislator should fill these gaps in the institutional framework by harmonizing the inter-jurisdictional interaction between competition and data protection authorities

Many suns, many futures: reimagining energy at Soleil·s

This article reviews Soleil·s, the central exhibition of the second Solar Biennale, held at MUDAC in Lausanne from 21 March to 21 September 2025. Through a selection of artworks, prototypes, projects, and references to pop culture, Soleil·s investigates solar energy not only as a technological resource but as a material for aesthetic and political imagination. While the show embraces a radically optimistic perspective on the transition to renewables, its rich display of data and didactic content occasionally outweighs the potential for aesthetic experience. The result is a curatorial tension, one that is increasingly familiar in contemporary art, between the desire to inform and the capacity to affect. However, by placing solar futures and “solar design” at the core of its inquiry, Soleil·s fosters crucial reflections on how art might participate in the reconfiguration of energy narratives and sensibilities in a time of planetary urgency
