Temporal Changes in the Use of Wild Medicinal Plants in Trentino–South Tyrol, Northern Italy

    Get PDF
Mountain regions are fragile ecosystems and often host remarkably rich biodiversity, and thus they are especially under threat from ongoing global changes. Located in the Eastern Alps, Trentino–South Tyrol is bioculturally diverse but an understudied region from an ethnobotanical perspective. We explored the ethnomedicinal knowledge of the area from a cross-cultural and diachronic perspective by conducting semi-structured interviews with 22 local inhabitants from Val di Sole (Trentino) and 30 from Überetsch–Unterland (South Tyrol). Additionally, we compared the results with ethnobotanical studies conducted in Trentino and South Tyrol over 25 years ago. The historical comparison revealed that about 75% of the plants currently in use were also used in the past in each study region. We argue that the adoption of “new” medicinal species could have occurred through printed and social media and other bibliographical sources but may also be due to limitations in conducting the comparison (i.e., different taxonomic levels and different methodologies). The inhabitants of Val di Sole and Überetsch–Unterland have shared most medicinal plants over the past few decades, yet the most used species diverge (perhaps due to differences in local landscapes), and in South Tyrol, people appear to use a higher number of medicinal plants, possibly because of the borderland nature of the area

    Get PDF
There is a global concern about pandemic infections, which can inflict enormous morbidity and mortality, regardless of great medical resources in the current day. Currently, there is no standard treatment for most viral infections in the world. To improve the immune system, it is vital to recommend the use of plant parts. Medicinal plants are the finest way to boost our immune system naturally. The study aimed to document medicinal plants traditionally used by the Kurdish people in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Expert sampling method was utilised in the study. The study interviewed 20 respondents with dominance of men 90 and women 10 %, respectively. Among the interview respondents, only 35% did not attend western education. Fourty one medicinal plants were documented from 22 families with Compositae (6) having the highest abundance, followed by Fabaceae and Lamiaceae 5 species, respectively. Leaf is the most utilised part, followed by root and whole plant at 36.1, 18.0, and 13.1 %, respectively. All plants are reported to be boiled or macerated with water and drunk until fully recovered. Highest fidelity value was recorded as 85% for P. atlantica, T. campylodes, A. propinquus, G. kola, R. communis, R. officinalis and C. sinensis respectively, the least are those with 55% fidelity value. The study found that Kurdish people are consistently utilising medicinal plants for their wellbeing. High fidelity values are found in the documented medicinal plants. This study provides useful information for various fields, especially in exploring the plant parts as a source of lead for future development in the production of herbal medicines and in the pharmaceutical industry

Unraveling The Link Between Lymphopenia And Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Implications For Disease Severity And Potential Treatment Strategies

    Get PDF
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by chronic inflammation that can potentially impact any body part. Lymphopenia, abnormal low lymphocyte numbers, are frequently observed in individuals with active SLE. This short review examines the correlation between lymphopenia and SLE. Databases of Scopus, PubMed, Elsevier, Wiley, and Google Scholar were searched for related publicationS. The results showed that lymphopenia is correlated with disease severity in SLE patients. The underlying mechanism is unclear, but it may be due to increased apoptosis of lymphocytes and the autoantibodies production that target lymphocyte surface receptors. Various therapies, including immunosuppressive, corticosteroids, and antiangiogenic agents, have been used for SLE management. However, their efficacy is varied in SLE patients with lymphopenia. These therapies may improve lymphocyte counts and disease vigorousity. Lymphopenia has been found to be linked with several factors in SLE patients, including lupus nephritis, higher steroid doses, cyclophosphamide uses and complement depletion. In SLE, abnormal angiogenesis has been linked to the disease pathogenesis. Thus, angiogenesis therapy for SLE selectively targeted the process of abnormal blood vessel growth that is associated with SLE. In summary, lymphopenia may serve as an indicator of disease severity, however, further studies are required to explore the efficacy of targeted and non-targeted therapies in managing SLE patients with lymphopenia

    Get PDF
A universal water supply system was the subject of numerous studies in an effort to help designers create more reliable systems for long-term operation. These efforts also target the convenience of the systems in use in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq as well as the optimization of the region's entire construction distribution networks. This research aims to find out how people think about the quality, quantity, and problems with the water distribution systems (in Sulaimani City). The data was collected through a questionnaire by asking people various questions, and their opinions about the water distribution systems in the region, as well as the convenience of the systems used (continuous or intermittent) to deliver water. For accessing water in the intermittent water distribution system, around 44%, 28%, and 3% of the respondents have access to water once in three days, once in two days, and have no watering schedule for accessing water, respectively. During the week, the water is distributed in a continuous system. As it’s obvious from the duration of water distribution, in most of the intermittent water distribution systems, 56.2% of respondents have 2–3 hours of access to water. According to the frequency of water availability, approximately 25% and 7.5% have access to water for only one hour and less than one hour, respectively. Respondents with continuous systems don’t have any major problems with the drinking water's odor, taste, or color. Results show that 72% of them accept the provided water as safe, and the breakdown of the water pipelines is confirmed by all
