    New Perspectives on Promotion and Rowmotion: Generalizations and Translations

    We define P-strict labelings for a finite poset P as a generalization of semistandard Young tableaux and show that promotion on these objects is in equivariant bijection with a toggle action on B-bounded Q-partitions of an associated poset Q. In many nice cases, this toggle action is conjugate to rowmotion. We apply this result to flagged tableaux, Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, and symplectic tableaux, obtaining new cyclic sieving and homomesy conjectures. We then study cases in which P is a finite, graded poset other than a chain, yielding new results for products of chains and new perspectives on known conjectures. Additionally, we give resonance results for promotion on P-strict labelings and rowmotion on Q-partitions and demonstrate that P-strict promotion can be equivalently defined using Bender-Knuth and jeu-de-taquin perspectives. Finally, we explore conjectures, related and unrelated to our main theorems, on objects that promise beautiful dynamical properties

    Advance Care Planning and Advance Directives: Implementing Online Education for Healthcare Providers

    Advance directives (ADs) summarize goals or preferences for future care regarding life-sustaining treatment and designates a surrogate decision-maker in the event a patient is unable to make healthcare decisions. These legal documents are especially important for providing patient autonomy and allowing people to communicate their medical care preferences to family, friends, and healthcare professionals. Two thirds of Americans have not completed an advance directive and 70% of Americans (more than 1.7 million) die of chronic diseases. Benefits of ADs include: autonomy during end-of-life, honored preferences, enhanced quality of medical decisions, less emotional distress, and even a decrease in healthcare costs. Approximately 60% of patients stated that they are open to talk about advance care planning (ACP); however, only 21% percent of providers reported talking frequently about matters related to ACP or end-of-life care. Literature review findings revealed that providers lack training and education about ADs and ACP conversations, leading to discomfort in skills, confidence, and knowledge about having these essential discussions. The purpose of this practice improvement project (PIP) was to increase nurse practitioners? knowledge of facilitating ACP conversations, and completion of AD among patients living with a chronic disease, over the age of 65, seen within the primary care setting. A total of 14 healthcare professionals participated in a one-hour educational webinar posted on the North Dakota Nurse Practitioner Association (NDNPA) website over a three-month time period between September 30, 2021 and December 30, 2021. Pre/post Likert scale surveys were administered to each participant electronically via Qualtrics. Confidence Likert scale surveys found the education increased participants? knowledge, confidence, and understanding of ACP and AD. PIP findings also demonstrated an increase in understanding of the Serious Illness Conversation Guide and an increase in both confidence and likeliness of increasing and initiating ACP conversations with patients. Education on ACP and AD resources should continue to be provided for healthcare providers online. Future research should look into how providing ACP and AD education directly affects AD rates in patients living with a chronic disease, over the age of 65, seen within the primary care setting

    Environmental and Economic Outlook of Construction and Demolition Waste Management Practices in a Mid-Sized City

    Construction and demolition waste (CDW) left at landfill sites increases the burden on landfills, which are increasingly becoming scarce and costly to operate. In North Dakota, CDW generated is disposed of at the Fargo landfill. This practice may hamper the realization of value from construction and demolition waste. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) was used to evaluate the benefits of two CDW management scenarios. The study found that a 75% reduction in the CDW sent to the landfill can reduce the environmental burden by 35%. Furthermore, replacing raw materials with recycled materials creates net environmental savings by preventing the production of raw or virgin materials. This practice can reduce the environmental burden by 25% while generating an income of $61/ton for the city. The results of this study provide information on the value of recycling CDW and serve as a basis for decision-makers to rethink CDW waste management practices in North Dakota

    Modal Analysis of Blood Flow in Brain Aneurysms

    The evolution of blood flow is vital in understanding the pathogenesis of brain aneurysms. Several past studies have shown evidence for a turbulent inflow jet at the aneurysm neck. Although there is a great need for analyzing inflow jet dynamics in clinical practice, data summarized in noninvasive modalities such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging or Computed Tomography are usually limited by spatial and temporal resolutions, and thus cannot account for the hemodynamics. In this paper, Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) is used to pinpoint the dominant modes of the inflow jet in patient-specific models of sidewall aneurysms. This paper aims to prove that the dynamic modes are inflow jet interaction with the distal wall in addition to the hemodynamics of the parent artery. Our work indicates that DMD is an essential tool for analyzing blood flow patterns of brain aneurysms and is a promising tool to be used in in vivo context

    CHAPS Online

    This paper explores the application development phases of the online version of Cow Herd Appraisal Performance Software (CHAPS). Beef producers and Extension professionals have been using CHAPS since 1985 as a herd management tool. North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension Service and North Dakota Beef Cattle Improvement Association (NDBCIA) developed the first version of CHAPS in 1985. There is two more development iteration of this application named CHAPS 2000 and CHAPS 2020. To modernize the CHAPS application, the NDSU Extension decided to develop an online version of the CHAPS application, and this version is called CHAPS Online. This paper focuses on the development process of the CHAPS Online application and how it is different from the CHAPS 2020

    The Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) are used by most libraries in the United States to help users find resources in their collections. For the last century, librarians have worked to make LCSH more inclusive and accurate by replacing offensive or racist terms with language that more fully reflects the identities and experiences of diverse populations. This article explains the purpose and function of subject headings and discusses the process by which they are continually updated. The main emphasis of the article is the history of debates and advocacy associated with that process, with a particular focus on the long campaign to change the former subject heading "Illegal aliens.

    Efficacy of Modular Design in Healthcare

    Modular design has become an industry leading philosophy for the future of community-based health services. Modular applied as a design principle subdivides a construction system into independently fabricated units, similar in size, shape, and functionality to formulate a structure. The benefits of this approach include time-to-build efficiency, cost-effectiveness, quality and precision, sustainability, continuity, and modification. This process contradicts traditional construction, pre-fabricating spaces off site to be assembled later. Modular architecture is historically correlated with hotel design and is still in its adolescent stage being integrated into hospice. Forward-thinking medical institutes and design firms have begun to experiment with modular design in their projects aiming to provide accessible healthcare in any context, however, discrepancies have surfaced. The complexity of a functional healthcare facility including circulation, adaptability, materiality, and utilities are being overlooked due to monetary hesitation, high demand, and standardized design. Modular healthcare design is still unpopular amongst manufacturers and firms. Through correlational research and simulation software, modular solutions and traditional construction methods can be compared using operational statistics. The purpose of this research is to study the efficacy of the designs proposed by the industry thus far in hopes to refine the process for a safer, enjoyable, more efficient, and replicable solution

    Up in Flames: Using Anthropology to Analyze the Increasing Cremation Rates in North Dakota

    Cremation rates within North Dakota, and the greater US, have been rapidly increasing over the recent decades. Funeral directors, coroners, and death investigators alike have noticed the increase; however, nobody has made a positive determination for why the increase was occurring. Using an anthropological lens, I evaluated the state of cremation with North Dakota and with the use of GIS analysis and interviews with local funeral directors, I was able to determine that there is not one specific reason for the rising cremation rates.     On the Tides: A Resort Raising Awareness of Coral Reefs Through Environmental Intimacy and Accessible Exploration Off Hollywood, Florida's Coast

    Reef ecosystems around the world are facing threats from all sides. They see destruction and physical damage from careless people participating in destructive practices such as improper fishing, dredging, or even people removing coral itself. It isn?t just from water however, urban development along coasts has changed the ecosystem in the water. Nutrients from agriculture finds its way into runoff. Urban stormwater as well as inadequately treated sewage makes its way into the oceans via our coastal cities. Overfishing can alters the delicate food chain the most reefs rely on for survival. This already fragile ecosystem is under a barrage of environmental threats and needs support. Coral reefs support 25% of sea life and do a tremendous amount for Florida as a whole. Reefs provide about 8BilliontoFlorida?seconomyandsupports70,000jobs.Thismightnotbetheextentofwhat?sdamagedthoughasthereefssupportupto8 Billion to Florida?s economy and supports 70,000 jobs. This might not be the extent of what?s damaged though as the reefs support up to 2.7 Trillion to Florida?s coastal economy and 50% of all tourism jobs. Coral reefs also break waves further away from shore so that the shoreline is protected and saves Florida about $1.8 billion in flood protection and helps 120,000 properties at risk for frequent tidal flooding. The development of this resort will look into the viability of such overwater construction around an artificial reef. It will show the economic feasibility of such a project in hopes that private developers can be added to the list of numerous non-profits and research groups that are fighting the decline in reefs. This research will explore the factors that are essential in propagating a reef ecosystem and analyze the Florida and surrounding coastlines for a viable spot to propagate a reef as well as provide essential infrastructure for a resort
