Architecture's Spiritual Utility in the 21st Century
How does architecture, in the built sense, influence humanity?s desire to connect with
something beyond ourselves? What responsibility does an architect hold in that
condition?
Tracing history through religions, movements of culture and the subsequent architecture
erected, we can see how various built forms simultaneously reflected and influenced
people?s connection to worlds both earthly and celestial. Is there a chance, at this
moment, to build upon our historical accomplishments toward a broader engagement that
stirs the most fundamental longings within us? A chance to resurrect stories and
analogies beyond the frames of traditional religious architecture in a poetic, ecumenical
sense.
This project proposes a solution to define architecture?s spiritual utility as we inevitably
press forward through time, technology and science. It elicits an attempt to distinguish the
nearly imperceivable thread that connects all of us, our poetic imagination, through built
architecture at several locations across the world. Taking intersubjective doctrines, cults,
creeds and ideologies of various cultures and casting them to the cosmos, this project
seeks to question how architecture may continue to inspire our distinguished and
communal desire for interconnection
Camp Conquerors: Pushing the Boundaries of Accessible Design to Create an Inclusive Space in an All-Embracing Environment
In our society, there are certain groups of individuals who feel that they have little access to services or that society has consistently ignored them. In this instance, it is individuals with disabilities. They are often considered to live in isolation, segregation, poverty, charity, and also pity. The purpose of this study is to develop an environment that is accessible to all youth with disabilities through the design of a camp. As part of the process of determining the design needs for a proposed camp for disabled youth, the following question is posed: How can architecture and outdoor camping contribute to fostering inner acceptance in disabled youth?
The research will start by addressing the definition and classification of disabilities, the types of disabilities, how the structure of a camp setting can affect their development, and ways to ensure that the structure of a camp setting can facilitate this process. In the research strategy, qualitative methods will be used, as well as an inter-subjective framework
Wildlife Wetland Park: Restoring Natural Habitat Through Stormwater Management & Public Recreation Along the FM Diversion
Urban stormwater runoff is at an increasing rate due to climate change causing harmful chemicals and pollutants to drain into rivers and bodies of water. These pollutants are extremely harmful to the environment destroying habitat and biodiversity.
This study will focus on strategies to mitigate the urban runoff flow that comes from streets, leading into rivers and bodies of water. The idea is to restore/implement an ecological infrastructure by constructing a wetland restoration park. Sustainable runoff management practices will allow for habitat restoration and stormwater management, meanwhile providing spaces for humans to connect with the land
Hindsight 20/20: Architectural Exploration of Empathy for Refugees in a Design Solution
When Albert Einstein said, "A bundle of belonging isn't the only thing
a refugee brings to his new country", he must have meant it in the most
literal sense because, he was a refugee, Sigmund Freud was a refugee,
Madeleine Albright & Henry Kissinger both former U.S Secretaries of
States were refugees. The way we treat these names today should help
us find the positive in Hindsight and support refugees overcome their
trauma and help harness the skills and talents they possess to make the
world a better place.
This thesis project intents to do just that-Design and Build a facility
that is unique in nature yet functional in every aspect of a refugee
rehabilitation and development process.
Over the years Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services (LIRS) has
made North Dakota home to thousands of refugees from around the
world, notably Bosnia, Burundi, Bhutan, Cambodia, Iraq, Rwanda,
Somalia, Sudan, and of lately Afghanistan and Ukraine. Like other
States that have resettled refugees, the narrative of the local social
fabric is slightly changing to reflect cultures from other parts of the
world.
In Fargo for instance where the largest number of refugees resettled, the
racial dynamics is readily visible, and you can hardly walk into a
grocery store today and not see a refugee or someone related to a
refugee. They speak English with accent or no English at all but, they
do possess skills, talents and trades that are either acquired formally or
informally in languages other than English. If all these could be harness
and used, both refugees and the host community would benefit
simultaneously.
The question this project seeks to answer therefore is, "How can
Architecture as a design profession be used to play the role of a good
neighbor who not only welcomes refugees and make them feel safe and
at home but, goes a step further and assist refugees establish small
businesses within the community even without mastering the language.
This thesis research will expose the level of skills and talents that
refugees possessed, while creating an opportunity for growth of small
business sectors within the refugee community. The "Refugees Center
and Small business Incubator" will focus on developing refugee talents
and skills, healing trauma, while establishing a sense of purpose, and a
run for a second chance at life
Electrodynamic Suspension: The Future of Rail Travel in the United States
With the steady increase in population throughout the United
States, the issue of transportation is becoming more of a problem.
With how prevalent personal car ownership is American
culture, the number of vehicles on the road are drastically increasing,
contributing to a rise in pollution. Aircraft flying overhead
also have a large impact on the environment with the
sheer amount of people that need to travel long distance for
either work or pleasure.
The incorporation of electrodynamic suspension rail systems
spanning across the United States will allow a substitute for both
automotive and airplane travel by reintroducing a third option
for moving people/cargo. This third option for travel will help
to reduce pollution caused by car and plane travel by relying
primarily on green energy. This thesis research will outline where
this new system will be located in order to achieve maximum effectiveness.
The research will examine the towns and cities that
are the most traveled to in the United States as well as which
locations would be conducive to a new high speed rail system
Computational Community: An Aggregation Based Modular Housing Development
How can computation and aggregation-based design tools be utilized in the creation of a modular housing development? Using existing computer modelling and computational programming tools, such as Rhinoceros and its plugin Grasshopper, a set of architectural objects can be created. Geometric data will be derived from these architectural objects and a set of spatial relationship rules will be developed. By using aggregation based and genetic solver Grasshopper plugins such as WASP and GALAPAGOS the arrangement of these architectural objects will organize themselves, based on set spatial relationship rules as well as a controlled set of testing constraints. The development of these spatial rules and testing constraints will be catered to facilitating the creation of a modular housing development, specifically located on a later specified site on the Southern part of the City of St. Paul Minnesota
Enumeration of Reduced Words of Length N for Coxeter Groups via BrinkHowlett Automaton
The overall goal of this paper is to give a method of computing out how many words of length n there are for any Coxeter group via its Brink-Howlett automaton. [6] [7] To build our automaton, we focus on Coxeter systems and root systems honing in on a special set of roots called the small roots. We follow closely [1] [5] for the first two chapters. Finally, we build the Brink-Howlett automaton through literature compiled through the years and present explicit examples of A?1 and the Coxeter group on three generators which each pair of generators is in a free relation with one another
A Professional Development Plan for Educators Working with Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Transitioning into Standard Childcare Settings
Standard childcare centers are continuing to become more inclusive to individuals of all abilities. Transition plans from specialized services such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) often include discharge criteria and a discharge transition plan for the child, but often do not include any training or development plan for educators in a standard childcare setting. Due to the limited number of plans available, transition plans vary greatly in how comprehensive they are as every organization creates their own plan or transitions children into the childcare setting without an identified plan. This paper proposes a professional development plan for educators working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) transitioning into a standard childcare program. The program includes staff training and support, and collaboration partnerships
