Orphereal: Orphic Journey to Healing: A Therapeutic Design for the Anxious and Depressed
Mental health has been rising for years, although since the pandemic
that swept the world in 2020, it only seems to have been getting worse.
When we hear somebody has broken their leg, has been diagnosed with
a cancer or a terminal illness, why do we feel empathy towards the person?
We feel called to deliver get well cards, and post about their misfortune
and rally others to do the same; in the simplest terms, we support
them on the path to heal. Mental health should be no different. The 2
most common mental illness diagnoses in America are depression and
anxiety. Everyday people around us are a part of this sector, but the difference
is it?s an invisible wound.
Why is it that when help is sought out for mental health, the atmosphere
that is intended for healing does the opposite?
Orphereal (coming from its root origin, Orphic and Ethereal) explores
how atmospheres help shape our moods and attune us both mentally
and physically. Inspired by ancient and modern influences that speak to
a cathartic transformation of mood; my architecture attempts to curate a
specific ritualist pathway of healing. Inspired by studies such as Le Corbusier?s
theory that states as humans our bodies are governed by the
diurnal (sign of the) 24 hour day, users are immersed in essential experiences
like sleeping, eating, bathing and therapy all guided by the sacred
relationship of shadow and light
Protect, Restore, Connect: Using Architecture to Help Save the Redwoods
In the recent past we have seen a
rapid decline in the presence of old growth
Redwood groves, particularly
Coast Redwoods groves in northern
California and southern Oregon. For
various reasons, we have been losing
these very valuable ecosystems and
iconic stands of trees at an alarming
rate. There are multiple organizations
and programs that are trying to help
these trees, but a lot still needs to
be done. Especially, when it comes
to public perception, understanding,
and our willingness to help save the
Redwoods.
Through various research
methodologies including the use of
historical documents and accounts,
interviews with related professionals,
case study examinations, and more,
many different topics were explored
in depth. All helping to inform and
improve the ideas imagined.
Improving the visitors experience
in these ancient Coast Redwood
groves could be very beneficial to
ongoing conservation efforts. These
experiences could be welcoming to
visitors, full of educational information,
and inspire people to connect with
these Redwoods at a deeper level.
These experiences could also include
access to some relevant research data
and important forestry work as a part
of the educational resources
Chernobyl: Beyond Disaster
In 1986, the Chernobyl disaster shook the world, leaving a scar on the land and a wound in the hearts of those who lived through it. In response, an architectural thesis project has been proposed - a memorial development in the heart of Pripyat that seeks to honor the victims, celebrate the resilience of the human spirit, and restore the beauty of this ?ghost town?.
A unique elevated path system will serve as a bridge between the past and the future, enabling visitors to explore the surrounding landscape without disturbing the natural environment. It is a testament to the power of human ingenuity to restore what was lost and to create a new beginning. As visitors walk along the elevated paths, they will be reminded of the fragility of this tragic site and the importance of preserving it. The design of the path system allows for wildlife to continue to roam freely, creating a harmonious relationship between humans and nature.
In addition to the path system, this development will feature hotel pods, viewing towers, and a memorial center. The hotel pods offer a unique opportunity to stay close to the site and fully immerse oneself in the experience. The viewing towers provide visitors with views of the surrounding area and a place to stop and reflect, and the memorial center is an immersive tribute to the victims of the disaster and a symbol of hope for the future.
This thesis project proposes the implementation of phytoremediation, or using plants to remove and detoxify pollutants from the soil and water. The implementation of this process in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone will aid in the restoration of the land and promote the growth of vegetation, creating a more sustainable and resilient environment.
The Chernobyl tourist development and memorial is a place of reflection, remembrance, and education. It is a reminder of the power of resilience and the hope that can emerge from tragedy, a tribute to the beauty of nature, and a symbol of the human spirit?s ability to create something beautiful out of darkness
Integrating Plains: Connecting Fargo Through a Green Roof System
The city of Fargo, ND, and the surrounding area has continually grown each
year and is expected to grow in the future. With the growth is an influx in the
building of homes, businesses, and roads. This growth has caused the area to
become more of a concrete jungle opposed to the historical vegetative lake
bed, it used to be. These hard surfaces and building production have negatively
affected the energy consumption, runoff coefficient, and temperatures within
the city, all of which have the potential to rise further yet. To prevent future
and combat existing pollution and runoff, roof infrastructure will be researched
through quantitative research and case studies to see differences in city
buildings with and without roof infrastructure implemented
Identifying Factors Associated with Terrorist Attack Locations by Data Mining and Machine Learning
Raj Bridgelall is the program director for the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute (UGPTI) Center for Surface Mobility Applications & Real-time Simulation environments (SMARTSeSM).While studies typically investigate the socio-economic factors of perpetrators to comprehend terrorism motivations, there was less emphasis placed on factors related to terrorist attack locations. Addressing this knowledge gap, this study conducts a multivariate analysis to determine attributes that are more associated with terrorist attacked locations than others. To tackle the challenge of identifying pertinent attributes, the methodology merges a global terrorism database with relevant socio-economic attributes from the literature. The workflow then trains 11 machine learning models on the combined dataset. Among the 75 attributes assessed, 10 improved the predictability of targeted locations, with population and public transportation infrastructure being key factors. After optimizing hyperparameters, a multi-layer perceptron?a type of artificial neural network?exhibited superior predictive performance, achieving an AUC score of 89.3%, classification accuracy of 88.1%, and a harmonically balanced precision and recall score of 87.3%. In contrast, support vector machines demonstrated the poorest performance. The study also revealed that race, age, gender, marital status, income level, and home values did not improve predictive performance. The machine learning workflow developed can aid policymakers in quantifying risks and making objective decisions regarding resource allocation to safeguard public health.https://www.ugpti.org/about/staff/viewbio.php?id=7

Proposed Intensity and Proximity to Failure Recommendations for Improving Resistance Training Strength
Resistance training, widely used in sports and recreation since the 1970s, can be used to achieve goals like muscular hypertrophy, strength, or endurance. Core principles to see noticeable adaptations include progressive overload, achieved by increasing sets, repetitions, frequency, weight, or training near muscle failure. However, high-intensity training may lead to chronic fatigue, which may negate the benefits. Research explores strategies like microdosing and high proximity to failure training to counter this. While high proximity to failure training may offer similar results to low proximity to failure training, microdosing may help coaches reduce fatigue, thus aiding athlete progress. Coaches must tailor training to consider injury risk, sport specificity, athlete commitment, and regular feedback for effective individualization. Ultimately, the chosen strategy should align with the athlete's goals, ensuring steady improvement. A proficiently individualized training program ensures that athletes achieve their goals, at a faster and more efficient rate
Sustainable Transportation Planning During an Era of Technological Evolution
?Sustainable Transportation Planning During an Era of Technological Evolution? provides an in-depth analysis spanning three pivotal chapters, each focusing on the nexus of climate change, transportation, and metropolitan planning. Chapter 2 delves into climate change's role in transportation plans. The literature reviews transportation?s effects on climate change and the significance of Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) transportation planning. After identifying research gaps and ethical considerations, the chapter outlines a methodology employing Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model construction, text preprocessing, and evaluation metrics. Python?s Natural Language Processing (NLP) toolbox is utilized to analyze the contents of 42 long-range transportation plans. Semantic interpretations emphasize word frequencies, climate keywords, transportation plan similarities, and data visualizations, culminating in a discussion of the findings and research conclusions. Chapter 3 shifts to the modeling of autonomous vehicles (AV) concerning sustainable development. It reviews the implications of technological advancements on mobility, long-term planning, and urban expansion. The methodology presents land use forecasts, transportation modeling, and AV simulation parameters. Various scenarios, such as increased auto availability and decreased parking costs, are explored. A detailed discussion synthesizes these findings, leading to a research conclusion. Chapter 4 targets current MPO transportation planning activities, accentuating climate action. Data is collected via a PDF survey completed and returned by 13 of Wisconsin?s 14 MPOs. A description of the survey methodology is followed by an examination of the findings, offering key insights and latent thematic comparisons to the findings documented in Chapter 2 concerning climate action currently being taken by Wisconsin?s MPOs via their long-range transportation planning activities

A History of North Dakota's Petroleum Industry, 1917-2017
North Dakota?s petroleum industry can be traced back to 1917, when Arthur Blum found a small amount of oil in a well drilled to water his cattle. The unsuccessful exploration for oil continued from 1917 until 1951, when on April 4, oil was produced, in commercial quantities, from the Clarence Iverson #1 well. The discovery well initiated the state?s first boom, and after several other wells began production, the state began construction of industry infrastructure. This discovery boom lasted until 1966, when a global oil glut reduced exploration and production slowed. In the 1970s, as a result of OPEC?s manipulation of petroleum markets, the state would again experience a boom in its petroleum industry. This boom was short-lived, however, and ended abruptly and painfully. Government deregulation of the industry, coupled with Middle East tensions easing, caused foreign petroleum to produce once again a global glut in oil which caused prices to fall dramatically.
After nearly two decades of anemic production, innovations in technology led to a third and significantly larger, more dramatic boom that saw growth in every aspect of life in western North Dakota. This occurred while the state also enjoyed an increase in agricultural prices and robust crop production. This boom saw intermittent busts in 2008-09 and 2014-15. Predictably, prices fall when oil is oversupplied, and rise when demand increases. The men and women of North Dakota, through each of these periods, have learned some valuable lessons, but despite that, they often continued to make many of the same mistakes. Sometimes they have learned from these mistakes and acknowledged the potential to do better, and sometimes, as in the case of the state?s budget, continue to do things the exact same way, hoping for different results
