Inequality in income and opportunity involves significant economic and social costs. This paper critically reviews the arguments made in the book entitled The Price of Inequality: How Today’s Divided Society Endangers Our Future by Professor Joseph Stiglitz. The central theme of this book is that political and economic forces have shaped and reinforced the extent to which concentration of income at the top is generated and protected by institutions in which the rich members of society exert considerable influence in the design and implementation of public policies. ?? ?????????????????•?????????????????????????•???????????????????99????????????????2012???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

A Letter from Assurbanipal to Enlil-b?ni and the Citizens of Nippur
The Assyrian Empire (1350-c. 610 BC) reached its peak during the reign of Assurbanipal (668-c. 630 BC). Nevertheless, due to a lack of sources which may indicate the empire had begun to decline, the latter half of the reign is not well known and the empire entirely collapsed afterwards. Thus, this reign is considered a key period of the Assyrian Empire. Though the correspondence of Assurbanipal constitutes essential research material, it has never been seriously studied because much of it has only been published in cuneiform copy and only partially translated. To investigate this correspondence, the present article focuses on letter ABL 292 from Assurbanipal to Enlil-b?ni, the governor of the Babylonian city Nippur and its citizens. The paper gives the transliteration, the translation, and a commentary of the letter. The text is undated, but it was probably written in or after 653 BC. The present research indicates that the letter is rich in rhetorical flourish and literary reference. Similar expressions are found in contemporaneous texts such as Esarhaddon’s Succession Treaty, the royal inscriptions of the Assyrian kings and the Babylonian Creation Epic En?ma eliš. Especially interesting is how the King uses such political rhetoric towards the local governor and the citizens. ?? ???????????????????668???630???????????????1350???610?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????ABL 292???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????653???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

This paper examines how Islamic revival has progressed in China since economic reform by focusing on the activities of an urban Hui Muslim Internet community in Yunnan province. Since the late 1970s, there have been two clear tendencies in Hui society. One is the rise in secularization amongst many Hui Muslims through social change; for example the dissolution of traditional Hui communities and intensified interaction between Hui and Han Chinese in daily life. Another is Islamization amongst certain Hui, brought about through a relaxation of religious policies. These contrasting trends mean that many Hui people do not share a sense of religiosity. Seemingly, they lack a point of contact. However, the Hui Muslim Internet community connects them through diverse activities and intents, from meeting prospective marriage partners to the doctrinal development of Islam. Additionally, Hui Muslims associated via the Web engage in Islamic revival movements such as establishing Waqf (Muslim endowments). This suggests a new comprehension of Islamic revival, one which does not reduce such movements to a sense of religiosity. As the new associations connect diverse Hui Muslims, the Islamic revival movements develop in entanglements of both the Islamic and the secular and not from mere Islamization alone. ?? ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????1970????????????2????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Politicization of Risk in Military Acquisition: A Case Study of the A-12 Program and its Termination
Why and how does a risk, once accepted, raise a political problem in a way that affects the consequence of a policy? To answer these questions, this article focuses on the interactive change of political context and risk perception. A changing political context may develop a gap in risk perception among actors and vice versa. This gap distorts the initial consensus on risk acceptance, affecting the consequence of policy; here, this process is referred to as the politicization of risk. Applying this perspective, this article examines the process in which the A-12 aircraft acquisition program of the U.S. Navy was adopted as policy but eventually terminated due to technical and political mismanagement of risk. The analysis indicates that risk propensity is influenced not only by personality and political institutions as some scholars point out, but is also changed by an interaction between political context and actors’ perception. In the case of the A-12 program, a perception gap between the executive and legislative branches caused a politicization of risk and consolidated a risk-averse context, which led to the termination of the program. ?? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????A-12??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Eugène Minkowski was a French psychiatrist and philosopher during the first half of the twentieth century. He integrated the phenomenology of Husserl as well as French philosophy into the domain of psychopathology. However, previous studies of Minkowski have not focused on his interpretation of phenomenology, partly because of the difficulty of his interdisciplinary approach. In order to clarify certain aspects of his works on phenomenology, here, we will focus on the theme of spaces as proposed in his works. We believe our study of such spaces will show that Minkowski's philosophical contemplation between phenomenology and psychopathology would anticipate the work of Merleau-Ponty. ?? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
It is often mentioned that Michael Haneke’s 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance is a critique against the mass media because images of real news broadcasts figure in the film. The purpose of this research is to show that this film is not only a critique of the mass media, but also a critique of audiences who watch news broadcasts produced by the mass media. I will discuss how the elements of media and audience critique function through an analysis of the editing process. ?? ??????????????71 Fragmente einer Chronologie des Zufalls???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Living without Existing: The Permanent Vegetative State
The situation of persons in a permanent vegetative state, characterized as a state of wakefulness without awareness, raises ethical issues concerning the meaning of a life extended by artificial nutrition and hydration. Incarnating paradoxes which question the boundaries between life and existence, these patients lead us to consider new categories of Being: how do we talk about a ‘non-existent human being’? ?? ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
