The Complexity of Establishing a Sacred Place and its Symbolic Meanings: the Religious Field of Medjugorje

    Get PDF
In the past, the understanding that a sacred place attracts visitors solely by virtue of its embedded sacredness and its related story of miracle has neglected the role played by religious authorities in the construction of the sacred place. This article focuses on Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Bosnia-Herzegovina), the most popular ‘active’ apparitional site in the world. Since the alleged apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the 1980s, this site has attracted millions of curious and faithful followers. However, Medjugorje has not as yet been recognized as a sacred place by the Vatican. The devotional movement in Medjugorje has been described in terms of rivalry between the religious elites. Adopting Bourdieu's concept of 'religious field', this article examines the relations and stances of the religious elites and the role of lay actors in establishing this sacred place and its symbolic meanings. ?? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????1980?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Peace Studies: Innovative Student-led Educational Extracurricular Activities

    Get PDF
This is a report on the educational merits of an extracurricular community-building learning project undertaken at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies which was begun in April 1997 and is still operating at the time this article was written in early 2012. This project is a micro-financing house-building initiative conducted in collaboration with the NGO Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI). The houses are built to reduce poverty and to provide protection and relief from natural disasters. A description of the project, an outline of its major activities, an analysis of its development as an agent of innovative student-led educational extracurricular activities, and a discussion of the project’s possible links with the curriculum are included. The HFHI extracurricular learning project has benefited the university in three ways. First, the projects have provided students with practical experiences in conceiving, planning, and carrying out action-plan projects which are small-scale simulations of the work of international community-building NGOs and also of logistical and communication aspects of business activities. Second, it may be claimed that the projects outlined in this report have Peace Studies curriculum links in the learning of foreign languages and cultures, the practice of intercultural communication skills and the development of better understandings of global political, social and economic issues. Third, student management of, and participation in, the projects may lead to important attributes of university success: a development of critical thinking capacity and a dedicated engagement in self-regulated learning. ?? ????1997?4???????2012???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????NGO???????????????????????????????HFHI???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????HFHI?????????????????????????3?????????????????????????????????????NGO?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

A Study on Language Competence and Use by Ethnic Kyrgyz People in Post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan: Results from Interviews

    Get PDF
In this article the author discusses the case of Kyrgyzstan and examines the language use of ethnic Kyrgyz people. Based on the results of semi-structured interviews with thirteen ethnic Kyrgyz people, features of Kyrgyz language use are clarified. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the titular languages of each ex-Soviet state were promoted as ‘state languages’ and positioned as a symbol of national integration. Previous studies on this topic indicate the tendency that the influence of each state language is growing, while the role of Russian language which enjoyed the highest prestige during the Soviet era is shrinking. Details of the dynamics of the relationship between state language and Russian language in each state, however, have not been fully discussed. Through the analysis of interviews, the author will attempt to clarify three characteristics of the language competence and use of language by ethnic Kyrgyz people, namely, 1) diversity in language competence among ethnic Kyrgyz people; 2) aralash (mix) use of Kyrgyz and Russian; and 3) language use in relation to ethnicity. In conclusion, based on these results, the author will discuss the features of state language in the context of Kyrgyzstan. ?? ?????????????????????13??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????3???????(1)???????????????(2)????????????????????????????????(3)????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

By analyzing texts written by French learners of the Japanese language, we can observe errors such as the use of dake instead of the adverb yatto. This error is probably due to the fact that the French adverb seulement is used both as yatto and dake. Therefore, in the present study, we will analyze the meaning and usage of the Japanese adverbs yatto and dake in comparison with the French adverb seulement. Then, we will examine why learners make this error and finally we will discuss the points to be taken into consideration when teaching the adverbs yatto and dake. ?? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????seulement??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????seulement???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
