    Psychological and environmental factors on conduct disorders among children with mild intellectual disability in south-west Nigeria

    Purpose: The study examined the relationship between psychological and environmental factors that predispose children with mild intellectual disability to conduct disorder in southwest, Nigeria. Methodology: A descriptive survey research design of the correlational type was adopted. Structured questionnaire was used for data collection. This was based on each specific objective of the data. Data obtained were analyzed using person product moment correlation co-efficient (PPMC) to determine the combined and relative contribution of the independent variables and the dependent measure while Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA) was used to determine the statistical significance of the hypotheses within the study. Result: The findings of the study revealed that there is a relationship between the psychological and environmental factors and conduct disorder with respect to children with mild intellectual disability. Also, there are significant point contributions of the psychological variables on conduct disorders among children with mild intellectual disability.                                                                      Conclusion: Both psychological and environmental factors played significant roles in the life of children with mild intellectual disability who exhibit conduct disorders. Recommendation: Both teachers, parents and other stake holders should put in their best and provide necessary supports so that conduct disorder should be manage among children with mild intellectual disability. Also, children with mild intellectual disability will be able to achieve in life

    Gender, violence and educational experiences of persons with disabilities in Oyo state, Nigeria

    Introduction: Persons with disabilities are subjected to and various discriminatory acts against them in school settings which have led to horrible educational experiences. Purpose: The main objective of this study was to explore the intersectionality of gender, violence experience, and educational experiences of persons with disabilities in Oyo State, Nigeria. Methodology: A descriptive survey research design was adopted in this study because no variables in the study were manipulated, but were observed to show relationship and differences among the variables. A structured questionnaire was used as instrument. The questionnaire has two sections, aside the demographic variables. The scale has reliability level of r= 0.79 coefficient using Cronbach Alpha. Results: The data collected were analysed using T-test and Pearson Products Moment Correlation Coefficient. Results indicated that positive male individuals with disabilities show a mean difference of 2.08091, with a confidence interval from 1.9432 to 2.2186. Regarding educational experience, female individuals demonstrate a mean difference of 2.18644, with a confidence interval from 2.1489 to 2.2240. The t-test statistic for females is remarkably significant, signifying a notable difference in educational experience compared to the expected mean. Conclusion and Recommendations: This study has revealed that persons with disabilities whether male or female encounter lot of challenges in virtually all areas of lives. These challenges are visible in gender discrimination, molestation, different violence experiences and negative educational experiences. The findings of the study are expected to inform policies and interventions that are more inclusive and responsive to the needs of this marginalized group of individual

    Effects of Know-Want-Learn (KWL) strategy on retention in geometry among upper-basic students in Kaduna north, Nigeria

    Introduction: Retention of geometry concepts has been a persistent challenge in mathematics teaching. Traditional teaching methods often fail to ensure lasting understanding among students. To address this issue, new teaching methodologies like the Know-Want-Learn (KWL) strategy are being explored. Purpose : This study investigates the effects of the Know-Want-Learn (KWL) strategy on upper-basic students' retention in geometry. Methodology: The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group. A total of 98 upper-basic school students across four intact classes were randomly selected. The students were divided into experimental and control groups to ensure the validity of the results. The research instrument, a geometry retention test (GRT), was developed, pilot-tested, and used to measure students’ retention. Data were analyzed using independent sample t-tests. Results: The results revealed a significant difference in mean retention scores between students taught using the Know-Want-Learn (KWL) strategy and those taught using conventional methods. The post-test mean retention score for the experimental group was 23.52 (SD=3.177), which increased to 25.40 (SD=2.571) in the post-posttest. The difference was statistically significant (t (49) = -3.504, p=0.05). Additionally, there was no significant difference in the performance of male and female students taught using the KWL strategy. Conclusion: The study concluded that the Know-Want-Learn (KWL) strategy is effective in improving retention in geometry among upper-basic students. Furthermore, it was found to be gender-friendly. Recommendations: Based on these findings, recommendations are made to students, teachers, parents, administrators, and other stakeholders to incorporate the KWL strategy in geometry instruction

    Epidemic outbreak and safety protocols on welfare of persons with special needs in south-west, Nigeria

    Introduction: This paper investigated epidemic outbreak and safety protocols on welfare of persons with special needs in South-west, Nigeria. It establishes that welfare of persons with special needs faces neglect and nonchalant attitude of the society, especially during epidemic outbreak.  Purpose of the study: This paper investigated epidemic outbreak and safety protocols on welfare of persons with special needs in South-west, Nigeria. Methodology: A descriptive survey research design was adopted and three research questions were raised for the study. The sample consists of five hundred (500) randomly selected respondents with special needs in South-west, Nigeria. The data were analysed using Multiple Regression Analysis, ANOVA and PPMC. A questionnaire titled “epidemic outbreak, safety protocols, and welfare of persons with special needs” with thirty items was used. It is on a four likert scales of Strongly Agree (AS), Agree (A), Disagree (D) and Strongly Disagree (SD) with three sections, apart from demographic variables: epidemic outbreak (10-items), safety protocols (10-items), and welfare (10-items). It was validated by experts in the fields of special education and social work and it has reliability level of r=0.75. Results: Results indicated positive and highly significant correlation between welfare and outbreak (r = 0.429, p < 0.01) which underscores the relatedness of safety protocol adherence, epidemic response, and improved welfare for persons with special needs in South-west Nigeria Conclusion and Recommendations: This study highlights influence of welfare in promoting safety protocols adherence among individuals with special needs during epidemic outbreak. The study recommended that welfare of persons with special needs should be given serious attention in South-west, Nigeria

    Principals’ problem-solving skills on management of student discipline in public secondary schools in Bomet county, Kenya

    Introduction: Student discipline is a global phenomenon. In Kenya, student indiscipline is ubiquitous in secondary schools. This problem has been attributed to many factors, including school principals’ managerial skills. Purpose: This study examined the influence of school principals’ problem-solving skills on the management of student disciplines in public secondary schools in Bomet County, Kenya. Methodology: The study used descriptive survey research design. It targeted 572 subjects, comprising 5 Sub-County Education Directors, 189 principals and 189 deputy principals and 189 senior teachers. A sample of 239 respondents, comprising 78 principals, 78 deputy principals and 78 senior teachers proportionally distributed and all the 5 Sub-County Education Directors, was obtained using Yamane’s formula and simple random and purposive sampling. The data was collected using a structured questionnaire and interview schedule. Interview data was subjected to content analysis. Meanwhile, SPSS version 24 was used to analyse quantitative data to generate descriptive statistics. Results: The study results indicated that principals’ problem-solving skills had a positive and significant effect on the management of student discipline in public secondary schools (β3=0.225, p=0.007). Conclusion: Therefore, effective mastery and application of problem-solving and decision-making skills can enhance school principals’ roles in promoting and managing student discipline. Recommendations: School principals should be equipped with problem-solving skills such as ability to identify problems and come up with possible solutions, evaluate various solutions, choose and implement best solutions, evaluate outcomes, employ creativity to identify and resolve student problems, show reliability, confidence and be analytical in tackling student problems

    Parental income and educational background on speech and language development of children with Down syndrome in Ibadan metropolis, Nigeria

    Introduction: Children with Down syndrome often experience delayed milestones, which can impact their academic, social, speech, and language development. However, research suggests that impaired expressive language skills are more common than receptive language skills in this population. Purpose: This study purposely examined parental income and educational background on speech and language development of children with Down syndrome in Ibadan Metropolis, Nigeria. Methodology: Descriptive research design was adopted, and a survey method was used. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 30 parents of children with Down syndrome in Ibadan North Local Government. A self-structure questionnaire named Speech-Language with Income and Educational background Assessment Scale (S-LIEAS) was used.  Data collected were analyzed using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation, and Multiple Regression Analysis at the 0.05 level of significance. Results: The results revealed that there is a significant relationship between parental educational background and language development of children with Down syndrome (r=0.47, p<0.05), but no significant relationship between parental income and language development (r=0.02, p>0.05). Conclusion: This study highlighted the importance of parental educational background and income in promoting speech and language development of children with Down syndrome. Recommendation: The study suggested that to promote speech and language development of children with Down syndrome, it may be necessary to provide parents with information about available management strategies and financial support to improve their income. Also, regular sensitization programmes was recommended for expectant mothers to educate them about Down syndrome and strategies for promoting speech and language development of children with Down syndrome

    Human resource management and performance of tertiary institutions in Cross River state, Nigeria: The moderating effect of research and development

    Purpose: The study examined the moderating effect of research and development on human resource management and the performance of tertiary institutions in Nigeria.  The study sought to determine the moderating effect of research and development on the management of human resources and their performance. Methodology: A descriptive survey research method was adopted and data was collected from primary sources. The population consisted of 400 faculties of the faculty of education in both public universities of Calabar, the sample size was 152, selected through the simple random sampling technique. The data was analyzed with the aid of a structural equation modeling using Smart PLS 3.3.3. Results: The results revealed that human resource management has a significant effect on the performance of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It also revealed that research & development has a significant effect on their performance. Finally, the result showed that research & development moderate the effect of Human Resource Management on performance. Conclusion: It was concluded that Human Resource Management and performance are moderated by Research and Development. Recommendations: It was recommended that institutions adopt value based HRM practices. It was recommended also that, adopted HRM practices must be organizationally researched and developed to be effective in driving maximally the performance of organizations, as it is not just sufficient to adopt any seemly good HRM practice. The emphasis on the relevance of R&D on HRM and performance is another major recommendation of this study

    Effects of simulation teaching technique on achievement of students in physics concepts in Buuri-east sub-county Kenya

    Introduction: Physics is a science subject that is fundamental for developments in any country. Students’ achievement in Physics concepts in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E) has been below average. Most physics concepts are abstract in nature and the techniques used to teach do not allow learners to conceptualize such concepts. This has led to poor student achievement in physics. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate effect of simulation teaching technique on secondary school students’ physics concepts achievement in Buuri East sub-county, Meru County, Kenya.  Methods: Solomon four non-equivalent control group design was used. Both purposive and stratified sampling techniques were used to select four co-educational schools that were used in the study. The sample of the study consisted of 123 form two students. Physics Achievement Test (PAT) was used to collect data on students’ achievement in Physics. The instrument was validated and pilot tested for use in data collection. KR-20 was used to estimate the reliability of PAT, a coefficient of 0.84 was found. Data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics, which included mean score, t-test, and ANOVA. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05, alpha level of significance. Findings: The results showed that the difference in physics achievement was statistically significant in favor of experimental group. There was no statistically significant difference in the achievement between male and female students in physics, based on the results. Recommendations: it was recommended that physics teachers embrace the use of simulation in teaching. The government and education stakeholders should encourage the use of simulation teaching technique in teaching physics in secondary schools

    Developing a dynamic learning culture for the integration of e-learning in higher education

    Introduction: The many advantages of e-learning, such as adaptability, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness, have attracted a lot of attention in recent years, and this trend is expected to continue. However, a dynamic learning culture that encourages creativity, cooperation, and continual improvement is essential for the effective integration of e-learning. Purpose: The purpose of this research was to identify successful approaches to fostering a dynamic learning culture conducive to e-learning's widespread adoption in higher education. Methodology: This study employed a literature review method. The research reviewed the existing literature to determine the most effective methods for creating e-learning courses and measuring their effectiveness, as well as the most pressing problems that need to be addressed in order to successfully deploy e-learning in higher education. Result: A systematic strategy including deliberate planning, allocation of resources, and continuous monitoring and evaluation was shown to be necessary for the development of a dynamic learning culture. It also called for promoting an environment conducive to innovation, one that values trial and error, teamwork, and the pursuit of perfection. Conclusion: In conclusion, integrating e-learning into higher education needs a multidimensional strategy that includes careful planning, allocation of resources, encouraging a culture of innovation, and rigorous research to establish a dynamic learning culture. Recommendation: Institutions should prioritize investing in the resources, infrastructure, and support systems needed to successfully integrate e-learning programs in order to build a dynamic learning culture

    Effect of human capital development on organizational performance of Cross River State Ministry of Information and Orientation, Calabar, Nigeria

    Introduction: The human capital of any organization remains a crucial catalyst for performance. This appears to be more so in the service industry, private or public. Yet, from the scientific era their significance is not often fully taken into serious consideration.   Purpose: Government establishments seem to care less about the development of civil servants in their employment.  They often emphasise quality service delivery over the developments of the workers, whereas it is the level of investments in the workers that determine quality.  The study investigated the effect of human capital development on organizational performance of Cross River State Ministry of Information and Orientation, Calabar.  Methodology: The study adopted descriptive survey research design using primary data gathered through structured questionnaire. The sample size was 145 out of 226 staff of the Cross River State Ministry of Information and Orientation, Calabar.  The simple random sampling technique was applied.  The reliability of the instrument using Cronbach alpha was 0.798.  The data collected were analysed statistically by means of multiple regression analysis in SPSS 23.  Result: The results of the analysis revealed that training and development has strong positive and statistically significant effect on the quality-of-service delivery in Cross River State Ministry of Information and Orientation.  Talent management exhibits positive and significant effect on quality-of-service delivery in the Ministry.  Career development has strong positive and significant effect on the quality-of-service delivery in the Ministry.  Succession planning has strong and statistically significant positive effect on quality-of-service delivery in the Ministry.  Conclusion: Human capital development has significant and positive effect on the quality-of-service delivery in the Ministry.  Recommendations: It was recommended that leadership of the Ministry should engage in training and development to strengthen the capacity of civil servants to render quality service
