    Effects of adolescent period on students’ academic performance in public senior secondary schools in Oyo east local government area, Oyo state, Nigeria

    Introduction: The thrust of this research centred on adolescence period (a period that is full of emotional, psychological and social adventures for the adolescents) and its impacts on the academic performance of public senior secondary school students. Purpose: This study was to investigate the effects of adolescent period on students’ academic performance with a particular reference to the public senior secondary schools in Oyo east local government area of Oyo state, Nigeria. Methodology: This study adopted a survey design method. The data collection tool was mainly a structured questionnaire of Likert type items with four response options of strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree. The sample size consisted of 508 public senior secondary school students who responded to the questionnaire. The validity of the instrument was conducted by three (03) experts in the fields of personnel management and human psychology. The reliability co-efficient of the instrument was .92 in the test – retest analysis. Findings: The study found that adolescent students were likely to reach their full potentials when their parents actively support their direction and goals; peer influence did not significantly affect adolescents’ academic performance, and there was a significant difference in the academic performance of male and female adolescents. Recommendations: The study recommended that parents should feel concern about the growth, development and academic performance of their adolescent children. Also, school counsellors, teachers, administrators, and other executors of the educational policy should also feel concern about adolescence stage

    Teachers' awareness and utilisation of indigenous games as instructional resources for holistic development of children in Ondo west local government, Nigeria

    Introduction: This study investigated teachers' awareness and use of indigenous games as a resource for holistic child development in the early years in Ondo West Local Government, Ondo State. Purpose: The main purpose of the study is to provide empirical evidence on the awareness and utilisation of indigenous games by the Ondo State teachers to promote the holistic development of preschool children, while the specific purpose is to reveal the extent teachers are aware of indigenous games that can promote holistic development in preschool children and teachers’ level of utilisation of indigenous games to promote children’s holistic development. Methodology: Descriptive survey research design was used to conduct the study. Early childhood teachers formed the population, and 200 randomly selected teachers took part in the study. Two instruments were used, titled 'Teachers Awareness of Indigenous Game Questionnaire and 'Teachers Utilisation of Indigenous Games Questionnaire, and each of the instruments contained 15 items and was validated using the Cronbach Alpha technique, which yielded a co-efficient of 0.75 and 0.80, respectively. The data collection lasted for two weeks after the necessary ethical consideration, and descriptive statistics of frequency count, percentage, and weighted average were used to analyse the data collected. Results: Teachers were fully aware of indigenous games as instructional resources for the holistic development of preschool children (OWA= 2.54). However, teachers rarely utilised indigenous games as a resource to promote children's holistic development (WA= 1.93). Recommendations: Every stakeholder must work together and provide an avenue for caregivers to use indigenous games to prevent their extinction

    Analysis of supply and utilization of technology equipment on technology knowledge among secondary school teachers in Kano state, Nigeria

    Introduction: Shortage and low utilization of technological devices in our education system motivate this study in secondary schools in Kano Municipal Education zone. Purpose: This paper focus to examine effect of supply and utilization of technology equipment as predictors of technology knowledge among secondary school teachers in Kano state. Methodology: Descriptive correlation research design was employed to discover the effect of supply and utilization of technology on teachers’ technology skills. The population of this study comprised all secondary school teachers of Kano Municipal education zone in Kano state. The sample of this study comprised of ten teachers each from a randomly selected 31 government secondary schools. A self-developed questionnaire was used to measure the supply and utilization of ICT on literacy level among teachers. Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and multiple regression statistics analysis were used to analyse the data collected. Results: The findings of the study showed there were significant correlations among the independent variables “ICT Supply and Utilization. The independent variables made a significant contribution to the prediction of teachers ICT level. Also the independent variable ‘ICT Supply and Utilization’ when pulled together have significant effect on teachers literacy level. Recommendation: It’s recommended that Government and non-governmental organization should provide supportive environment for teachers as well as students so as to improve their technology knowledge and productivity

    Knowledge attitude and practice of solid waste management among households in Calabar municipality, Nigeria

    Introduction: The volume of solid wastes being generated continues to increase at a faster rate than the ability of the agencies to improve on the financial and technical resources needed to parallel this growth and its gradually becoming a challenge in our society today. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate and understand the relationship between knowledge attitude and practice of solid waste management among households in Calabar municipality Cross River State. Methodology: Ex post facto research design was used for the study. 200 respondents were sampled from a population of 4,000 household in Calabar municipality using a simple random sampling technique. A close-minded questionnaire was used for data collection. The instrument was validated and was also tested for reliability using Cronbach alpha method with estimate of .72 to .80. Data collected was analyzed using the Pearson products moments correlation they were tested at 0.5 level significance. Results The results revealed that knowledge attitude and practice of household in Calabar municipality Cross River States significantly influence solid waste management and this maybe as a result of poor education on the health implication, inefficient collection methods, insufficient coverage of the collection system and improper disposal 'of solid wastes. Recommendations: It was recommended that there should be adequate enlightenment program on solid waste management in order to enhance awareness so as to encourage and develop the habit of using proper refuse dorms in disposing waste in the area and there should be sanction for those who refused to change their poor attitude

    Parents and teachers’ perspectives on acceptance of giftedness traits in children with giftedness and talented

    Purpose: The general purpose of the study was to investigate parents and teachers perspectives on acceptance of giftedness traits in children with gifted and talented in Afijio Local Government of Oyo State. Methodology: Three research questions were raised to guide the researchers in the study. Descriptive design method was used for the study. Purposive sampling techniques was used in selecting the respondents for the research work. Instrument used for data collection was self-structured questionnaire administered to fifty (50) secondary school students in Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State. The method employed for data analysis was Frequency count, percentage (%), mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions. This instrument reliability was measured using Cronbach’s Alpha (α) with 0.84 as the internal consistency.  Results: The findings of the research showed that gifted and talented in children was a gain on the parent part (X = 3.32). It was also agreed by the respondents that their teachers love asking them questions in class because they know they would definitely produce answers to the questions (X = 3.20). It could therefore be deduced from the findings that, parents were comfortable with their children with gifted and talented and their parents have good perspectives about them. Conclusion/ Recommendations: It was recommended among others that there should be more help coming from the parents of gifted and talented children at home with the provision of other amenities to enhance their gifted traits. It was also suggested for further studies that it would be interesting to explore how parents and teachers recognize and support giftedness

    Effect of student-centred learning strategy on English language achievement of students with visual impairment in Imo state, Nigeria

    Introduction: Poor English language achievement of students with visual impairment has led to the investigation of strategies that can improve their English language performance. Experts in special education have recommended the utilisation of a student-centred strategy in teaching English langauage to students with visual impairment. Purpose: The study focused on the effect of student-centred learning strategy on English langauage achievement of students with visual impairment in Imo state. Methodology: The study adopted quasi-experimental design and a sample of 15 students with visual impairment were randomly selected from two integrated secondary schools in Imo state. English Language Achievement Test (ELAT) was used to collect data for the study. Data obtained were analysed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions, while t-test and analysis of covariance were used to test the null hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Result: The result revealed that student-centred strategy had more effect on English language achievement of students with visual impairment than the conventional teaching method. The result also revealed that student-centred strategy enhanced English language achievement of both male and female students with visual impairments. The study concluded that a switch from the conventional teaching method to a student-centred strategy in teaching students with visual impairment English language will enhance their English language performance and in turn, improve their academic achievement.  Recommendation: This study recommended that the government should organize regular in-service training for teachers of students with visual impairment on the use and importance of student-centred learning strateg

    Thesis writing in colleges of education in Nigeria: Students' challenges and coping strategies

    Introduction: Thesis writing is a critical component of higher education and marks the conclusion of students’ academic journey and a demonstration of their ability to conduct research. However, this process is confronted with challenges that can impede student progress and affect the quality of the thesis. Purpose: This study explores the challenges faced by students in colleges of education during the thesis writing process, and the strategies students employ to overcome these difficulties. Methodology: A descriptive survey research design was used adopted for the study. The snowball sampling technique was used to select 3744 students from 31 Colleges of Education in Nigeria and data were collected using online questionnaire titled Thesis Writing Challenges Questionnaire (TWCQ). The checkboxes questions and four-point modified Likert rating scale response pattern of a Very satisfactory, satisfactory, unsatisfactory, and very unsatisfactory; Very effective, Effective, Ineffective, and Very Ineffective and strongly agree (SA), agree (A), disagree (D) and strongly disagree (SD) question formats were used. It was validated by experts and has a reliability level of r = 0.82. Data collected were analysed using frequency table, mean and standard deviation. Results: Result revealed that the thesis writing process presents significant challenges, in areas such as topic selection, research design, and data collection. The findings highlight the role of institutional support services in alleviating these challenges. Conclusion: The study emphasized the importance of personalized support and counseling in enhancing' thesis writing process. Recommendation: The study recommends that efforts should be made to enhance institutional support, and provide training to improve the thesis writing process

    Influences of age, gender and school type on social media usage among secondary school students in Ogbomoso, Nigeria

    Introduction: The exponential rise in social media usage has sparked concern about its influence on adolescents, particularly those attending secondary schools. Purpose: This study examines the influences of age, gender, and school type on social media usage among 750 secondary school students in Ogbomoso, Nigeria. Methodology: It adopted a correlative survey research design involving a multistage sampling method. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data, with a reliability co-efficient alpha of 0.817. Results: The findings reveal a nuanced relationship between these factors and students' social media engagement. Older adolescents, particularly 17-year-olds, exhibit higher daily social media usage, with more male students (57.9%) reporting daily usage than females (49.6%). Students from public schools (61.3%) use social media more frequently than private school students (46.1%). Smartphones (84.4%) are the primary means of accessing social media, and Facebook (62.7%) is the preferred platform. Correlation analysis reveals a weak relationship between age and social media usage (r = 0.019, p > 0.05), and a negative correlation between gender and school type (r = -0.019, p > 0.05). There is a positive correlation between gender and social media usage (r = 0.049, p > 0.05), and a statistically significant correlation between school type and social media usage (r = 0.105**, p < 0.05). Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of tailored strategies that consider socioeconomic influences on students' digital behaviors. Recommendation: The findings suggest that educators and policymakers should consider different student groups' unique needs and characteristics when developing social media policies and interventions

    Educational counselling needs of students with disabilities in Federal University of Lafia, Nigeria

    Introduction: This study investigated the educational counselling needs of students with disabilities in Federal University of Lafia, focusing on their counseling requirements to enhance academic performance. Purpose: The primary purpose was to identify counselling needs and assess the accessibility and awareness of counselling services available to these students. Methodology: A survey research design was employed, conducted in the Department of Special Needs Education The study involved a population of 20 students with various disabilities, including 12 hearing impaired, 5 visually impaired, 1 with a learning disability, 1 amputee and 1 with cerebral palsy. A self-designed instrument titled Educational Counselling Needs and Students with Disabilities (ECNSD) was utilized for data collection. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 26.0, applying percentage and frequency for demographic information and descriptive statistics (mean) for research questions. Results: The findings revealed that students required counselling on tailored learning strategies and accommodations. There was a lack of awareness regarding available counselling services and the physical structures for these services were often inaccessible. Communication barriers were noted, particularly for students with hearing impairment when services were not provided in their preferred language. Conclusion: The study highlighted the urgent need for improved educational counseling services for students with disabilities in Federal University of Lafia, emphasizing that current services are inadequate and must overcome significant barriers to support student success effectively. Recommendations: It is recommended that the government improve the accessibility of physical structures and resources for counselling services. University counsellors should receive training to better understand and address the unique needs of students with disabilities effectively

    Challenges in selection and maintenance of clothing among students with physical disabilities in south-west, Nigeria

    Introduction:  Clothing refers to items used for protection, adornment, identification of any individual and other specific purposes while students with physical disabilities are specifically to select and maintain their clothing as their colleague who are not disabled. Purpose: The study examined the challenges in selection and maintenance of clothing among people with physical disabilities in South West Nigeria. Methodology: A descriptive survey research design was adopted. Structured questionnaire was used for data collection. This was based on each specific objective of the study. Data obtained were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean score, standard deviation while hypotheses were tested using t-test, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC), Kendall’s Tau and Spearman’s Rho to test the significant correlation in the effect of clothing selection and maintenance of people with physical disabilities in special schools and rehabilitation centre. Result: The findings of the study revealed that there were significant differences in the challenges facing by student with physical disabilities in selection of clothing by gender. Also, there exists a high positive correlation between effect of clothing selection and maintenance of people with physical disabilities in special schools and rehabilitation centres. Conclusion: Clothing selection and maintenance of people with physical disabilities should be attended to so as to meet the standard of their living and integrate with other colleagues both inside and outside home environment. Recommendation:  Institutions of learning at all levels, government and NGO should adequately focus on the welfare of people with special needs include people with physical disabilities
