Integration of information from test processes in supply chain management

Exploring growth variability and extremes in Arctica islandica bivalve species in the context of large-scale climatic phenomena
Hidden within the carbonate shells of Arctica islandica (A. islandica) bivalve species lies a wealth of information about past environmental conditions. Starting with the 1980s, this clam species surged not only in commercial popularity, but it quickly became one of the most important bio-records in the field of sclerochronology — which focuses on growth patterns in the hard tissues of accreting organisms — owing to individual lifespans exceeding centuries in the northern North Atlantic Ocean. Growth increments are typically annually deposited and can be precisely dated, thereby facilitating crossdating of multiple specimens to construct century-long master chronologies, and hence, long-term environmental records. However, compared to the isotopic composition of the growth bands, which acts as proxy for temperature, salinity and water productivity, growth increments are more challenging to decipher due to the interplay of multiple physical and biological factors, with the contribution of each factor varying in proportion depending on the region. With Arctica islandica already established in the community as a versatile climate archive, which novel insights can be envisioned?
There is, for instance, an interest in exploring the spatial variability of environmental signals recorded by Arctica islandica master chronologies across diverse geographical regions. This attempt enables a more comprehensive understanding of the common growth signal and its relationship to large-scale climate phenomena. Spectral and correlation analyses have consistently revealed that A. islandica records decadal and multidecadal periodicities, often associated with natural oscillations that influence large-scale ocean circulation patterns such as the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), as well as atmospheric circulation patterns like the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Given the ongoing state of climate change, characterized by increasingly frequent and potentially more intense extreme events compared to recent years, there is a burgeoning interest in assessing whether growth anomalies observed in marine organisms correspond to unusual climatic patterns. In my research, I define extreme growth as deviations in the 10th and 90th percentiles from the mean growth, and believe these can provide valuable insights into environmental stressors. The aim of this thesis and the results therein is to identify clues that can guide future research towards a deeper understanding of the complex large-scale climatic interactions shaping growth variability and extreme responses in A. islandica.
To extract the shared growth signal in the northern North Atlantic, I have compiled previously published centennial-long master shell chronologies in several bivalve-based networks, and applied distinct principal component analyses. It was interesting to see a higher degree of congruity in the low growth years across the networks and the methodological approaches, underscoring the robustness of the findings concerning bivalve extreme growth. To identify anomalous large-scale patterns in the sea surface temperature and sea-level pressure, I have relied on composite maps of growth extremes along with reanalysis data. The composite analyses revealed that years marked by reduced growth aligned with positive sea-surface temperature anomalies in the extratropical to polar North Atlantic Ocean resembling multidecadal AMO mode, which paired with a coherent pattern in the North Pacific Ocean suggestive of a negative Pacific Decadal Oscillation. The bivalve networks further revealed that two chronologies from distinct areas — the northern Icelandic shelf and the German Bight in the southern North Sea
— did not conform to the spatial patterns observed. Consequently, two case studies were conducted to investigate the unique characteristics of these locations.
Using the chronology from the northern Icelandic Shelf, based on A. islandica bivalves from a water depth of 81 to 83 meters, my approach specifically addresses why correlations with sea surface temperature often lack the required statistical significance and are deemed inconclusive. In this example, I correlated the growth signal with a three-month running average of temperature and salinity data across various water depth layers, and found significant correlations with the subsurface waters starting at a depth of 56 m during summer and autumn, whereas correlations with the surface temperature layers were lagged by 2 years. Additionally, by computing spatial correlation maps, I highlight the potential of A. islandica to track thermally similar water bodies at large-scale. Next, I used an unpublished growth chronology of Arctica islandica from Helgoland in the southern North Sea alongside composite maps, to investigate which atmospheric patterns are associated with extreme growth events. The results indicate that growth in A. islandica is reduced during years characterized by a positive polarity of the NAO in winter, followed by intensified atmospheric blocking over the British Isles in spring. Spring blocking might also be linked to winter blocking in the North Pacific. The regional atmospheric pattern impacts the timing of the spring phytoplankton bloom, leading to a delay in the availability of essential nutrients necessary for growth.
By bridging research gaps between the field of sclerochronology and climate dynamics, this thesis delves into different aspects of the Arctica islandica’s potential as a climate archive in the North Atlantic. Whether deciphering the common growth signal across bivalve networks (Paper I), or examining the spatial-depth relationship with subsurface temperature variations (Paper II), or uncovering links to atmospheric teleconnections and blocking frequency events (Paper III), each study adds exciting findings, holding relevance for both paleo- and future-oriented studies
Exploring the factors behind the expansion of the harmful dinoflagellate Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax in Northern European waters
This Phd-thesis investigated factors driving the expansion of the harmful dinoflagellate Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax in Northern European waters. It includes an ecophysiological study investigating the influence of dissolved nitrogen and light availability on growth and toxin content of A. pseudogonyaulax, a food web study addressing the effects of this HAB species on multiple trophic levels ranging from phytoplankton to fish, as well as a time series analysis analysing the apparent expansion of A. pseudogonyaulax across Northern European waters. The first study, published in Limnology & Oceanography, indicates that urea is not an important driving factor of the expansion of A. pseudogonyaulax and shows that this species has high intraspecific variability and resilience to light. The second study, published in Harmful Algae, demonstrates deleterious effects of A. pseudogonyaulax on other planktonic organisms which suffer adverse fitness effects ultimately resulting in lysis and mortality. This study also demonstrates for the first time ichthyotoxic characteristics of A. pseudogonyaulax, which are likely driven by uncharacterized bioactive extracellular compounds (BECs) and not by goniodomins. The thesis contains a third first-author manuscript, envisioned for future publication, which demonstrates that the frequency of A. pseudogonyaulax occurrences has increased in Northern Europe. In addition, it indicates that temperature may have partly driven increasing occurrences and that A. pseudogonyaulax benefits from high carbon-to-chlorophyll a ratios

ISD8 Tutorial Report: Cognitively Inspired Reasoning for Reactive Robotics - From Image Schemas to Knowledge Enrichment
This report details a tutorial on image-schematic analysis and functional object detection presented at the conference. The tutorial bridges theoretical foundations with practical applications, introducing participants to a novel framework for analyzing video content through the lens of image schemas. Through hands-on demonstrations, participants engaged with an interactive system that processes video sequences to generate rich semantic representations. The system produces multi-layered output including knowledge graphs of image schematic activations, natural language descriptions, temporal event annotations, and automatically curated storyboards with generated captions. The theoretical underpinnings of image-schematic segmentation and functional parts detection were covered, but the tutorial focused on enabling participants to effectively utilize these tools for their own research and applications. The tutorial successfully demonstrated how image-schematic analysis can be practically applied to video understanding tasks, while gathering insights from participants about desired future functionalities. This approach of combining theoretical instruction with hands-on experimentation proved effective for both teaching the technology and collecting user requirements for future development
Befragung:
Von 119 kontaktierten Organisationen antworteten 17.
Sechs Organisationen zeigten Interesse an Tabakkontrollinterventionen.
Early life history of the scleractinian cold-water coral Caryophyllia huinayensis from a naturally acidified Chilean Fjord
Scleractinian cold-water corals (CWCs) are a diverse group of the phylum Cnidaria. As structuring species, they sustainably change the abiotic and biotic environment and thus maintain a self-organized habitat that supports a diverse associated fauna. Furthermore, they play a key role in regional carbon cycles by coupling benthic and pelagic ecosystems. Their reproduction can follow two different modes, brooding of larvae and broadcast spawning of gametes. Additionally, the reproduction of unisexual polyps (gonochorism) and hermaphroditism results in two sexual strategies, and two known asexual reproductive mechanisms (fragmentation and fission). Scleractinian CWC ecosystems are present globally and predominantly occur in deep waters. Hence, their accessibility is limited, which has hampered a comprehensive understanding of certain aspects of their life cycle, including gametogenesis, dispersal, metamorphosis from larva to polyp and early skeletogenesis. Consequently, the potential impact of the predicted ocean acidification (OA) on the early life cycle of scleractinian CWCs remains elusive.
The aim of this thesis is therefore to describe the reproductive biology of the scleractinian CWC Caryophyllia (Caryophyllia) huinayensis and to predict the possible impacts of OA on its early life history based on observational and experimental evidence. Both in vitro and in situ investigations were carried out to determine the reproductive mode and strategy, gametogenesis, potential dispersal mechanism, and the effect of aragonite undersaturation of seawater (Ωarag < 1) and low seawater pH on early skeletogenesis and oogenesis of this scleractinian CWC, respectively.
Observations revealed that C. huinayensis broods larvae, which are released throughout the year. At the end of a one-week planktonic stage, larvae settle and initiate metamorphosis, developing their first set of tentacles within two days. Skeletal formation and the development of the second set of tentacles started ca. 5 days after settlement. Zooplankton feeding, and the development of the third and fourth set of tentacles started ca. 21, 153 and 895 days after settlement, respectively (Chapter 2). During a three-year in vitro maintenance period, we documented reverse development in adult polyps through an ontogenetic reversal process, occurring spontaneously and without environmental stressors, as corroborated by in situ evidence. Termed “polyp dropout”, this phenomenon entails tissue retraction and tissue detachment from the skeleton. The detached polyps can survive for several weeks, but we never observed re-settlement (Chapter 3). Should re-settlement occur in situ, polyp dropout would mark a potential new mechanism, aligning with Stanley´s “naked coral” hypothesis, which explains how corals may have endured the Permian-Triassic mass extinction.
The early skeletogenesis of this scleractinian CWC was described using both real-time in vivo polarized light microscopy (PLM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (Chapter 4). Remarkably, early skeletogenesis in this species follows a similar temporal and sequential development pattern to that of warm-water scleractinian corals. This suggests the presence of a genetically encoded body plan in scleractinian CWC, orchestrating a precisely timed biomineralization processes from the micro to macroscale during the early stages of development.
Additionally, I revealed that aragonite undersaturation of seawater (Ωarag < 1 ) has no effect on skeletal formation during early skeletogenesis, as C huinayensis recruits are still able to build integral micro- and macrostructural crystal morphologies (Chapter 4). Although the precise mechanism enabling scleractinian CWCs recruits to compensate for Ωarag < 1 remains elusive, it seems that the early life stages of C. huinayensis are equipped to cope with the projected alteration in seawater Ωarag by the end of the century. However, it should be noted that compensating for changes in seawater pH and its resultant alteration in seawater Ωarag is known to require higher energy expenditure, potentially leading to imbalances in energy utilization.
In a naturally acidified fjord in Chile, I utilized histological methods to investigate the effect of low seawater pH, and its interaction with temperature and oxygen on the reproductive biology of C. huinayensis across all seasons (Chapter 5). My findings indicate that the seawater pH effect varies depending on the interaction with environmental parameters. This suggests that C. huinayensis reproduction is influenced by a mixture of environmental and endogenous factors.
Overall, this thesis contributes to the understanding of the reproductive biology, potential dispersal mechanisms, and early life cycle of scleractinian CWCs, using C. huinayensis as a model species. It emphasises the importance of understanding a species' reproductive strategy and mode, and dispersal mechanism, which in all provide insights into its potential phylogeography, distribution, and habitat colonization ability. In this study, I present the first documentation from the larval stage up to three years post-settlement of a scleractinian CWC. The findings demonstrate that, with their heterotrophic feeding, CWCs develop at a rate similar to that of scleractinian warm-water corals, despite significant environmental differences. Moreover, the opportunity to rear newly settled polyps allowed the first assessment of the effect of Ωarag < 1 on early skeletogenesis, revealing an integral formation of skeletal structures. Moreover, we observed that seawater pH an its interaction with temperature and oxygen showed inconsistent effects on reproduction, suggesting that other environmental and endogenous factors also play a significant role in reproductive processes.
Based on these results, I suggest that future studies should consider reproduction as a critical factor in assessing the overall effect of ocean acidification. A pressing question remains as to whether the combination of rising ocean temperatures and OA will affect the early life stages of these corals. The foundational knowledge of reproductive biology and its interaction with OA, along with the tools developed during this study, provide a way to address this question and shed light on the response of scleractinian CWCs to our changing planet
