Hinduism in School - rethinking religious education

    No full text

Material-integrated thin-film sensors to measure strain in grinding processes

    No full text
The doctoral thesis presents a material-integrated thin-film sensor system designed to enable real-time, in situ monitoring of process data during manufacturing processes. Resistive sensors with a meander design were manufactured on steel substrates using a conventional microfabrication process. The resulting "sensor inlay" consist of rectangular steel pieces that are obtained from the fabricated substrates and contain the sensor layer imprinted in them. The sensor inlays were then glued into a groove that is pre-machined on top of a standard workpiece using epoxy adhesive. The workpiece and the sensor inlay are made of the same steel. This creates the so-called ‘sensor-integrated’ workpiece. The ‘sensor-integrated’ workpiece was then used for measuring in-situ strain in the workpiece material in outer-diameter cylindrical grinding and flat surface grinding. At each grinding cycle, one measurement was recorded continuing until the sensor layer was eventually damaged. This recorded data provided insights into strain dynamics on the workpiece material throughout the grinding process. The broader significance of this research lies in its potential applications beyond grinding, as it enables real-time monitoring of internal parameters in various machining processes. Such technology offers significant potential for improving process control, precision, and quality in other manufacturing processes and is not limited to grinding alone. Moreover, it could drive innovations in both thin-film technology and sensor integration in materials beyond traditional silicon technology

Integration of Two-Photon Polymerized Structures in Microfluidic Channels for Cell Handling Applications

    No full text
In this thesis, the investigations to establish a processing sequence for the realization of 3D microstructures and -electrodes fabricated by two-photon polymerization (2PP), that can be utilized for precise and efficient manipulation of individual cells in microfluidic environments, are presented. 2PP is a 3D printing approach, based on direct laser writing, which enables the realization of structures with sub-micrometer features. By integrating both passive and active manipulation methods, new design strategies for microscale cell handling are explored and demonstrated. As a passive cell handling method, a self-closing single cell trap is realized, which is based on a rotating element to close the trap. To realize the rotating element, newly designed thin support beams are implemented during printing to connect the rotating flap and a stator. These support beams improve the printing outcome, as they give stability and prevent deformation during printing. Rotor and stator can later be easily disconnected by breaking the support beams; for example via a directed nitrogen stream. The flaps rotate freely around the rotor, both in nitrogen and in a liquid. With the flap element placed in front of the trap, the closing mechanism is initiated by the drag force of the liquid. With that, single cells can be captured successfully. As an active cell handling method, 3D ring-electrodes are realized by 2PP to generate a non-uniform electric field to manipulate cells via dielectrophoresis (DEP). When exposed to such a field, cells experience a force due to induced polarization, allowing them to be manipulated in the direction of the higher or lower field gradient. To realize 3D electrodes via 2PP, a unique fabrication process is designed to implement them in high microfluidic channels. With a ring-shape, compared to bottom or ceiling electrodes, it is possible to span the electric field over the entire channel, thus influencing cells more effectively. When applying a flow, cells can be successfully focused towards the middle of the channel in a straight line. These two cell handling approaches illustrate the potential of integrating two-photon polymerized structures into microfluidic systems for precise cell manipulation. The unique design flexibility offered by applying 2PP in a microchannel enables enhanced control over cell behavior, which is an essential factor for improving the functionality of microfluidic applications. Overall, this thesis highlights the promise of 2PP in microfluidics and lays a groundwork for future technological advancements in the field

A simulation study to systematically evaluate the effects by design modifications in a complex gear geometry on distortion behavior

    No full text
In response to economic and ecological demands, weight reduction has become a paramount objective in the automotive industry, driving innovation in materials and component design for lightweight construction. However, achieving lightweight components without compromising production feasibility presents challenges. The process of heat treatment, aimed at enhancing material properties, introduces size and shape alterations, alongside residual stresses, which can impact subsequent manufacturing and component longevity. Understanding the mechanisms behind these changes is crucial for cost-effective design and post-processing. While in-situ measurement techniques are limited in heat treatment facilities, simulation software offers a viable alternative for studying dimensional alterations. Despite recent advancements in simulation tools, the complexity of heat treatment processes demands comprehensive material parameters and boundary conditions, often making computations time-consuming. While existing simulations primarily focus on process optimization and property enhancement, research into the impact of geometric variations on final distortion behavior remains limited. This study aims to bridge this gap by investigating the influence of geometric variations on distortion behavior through heat treatment simulation, contributing to a deeper understanding of lightweight component design optimization. In preparation for the numerical investigations, extensive work was carried out to determine the temperature- and location-dependent heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and the conversion behavior. Extensive calibration and validation work was also carried out. In the numerical area, cyclical boundary conditions were programmed for 3D simulation of the gear. After partial validation, this model was used in close combination with experimental work to evaluate the compensation potential of modified cross-sectional transitions. Ultimately, the model was used to gain a deeper understanding of the complex interplay of geometry, thermal and transformation-induced strains

High-speed laser melt injection for generating functional MMC surfaces

    No full text

How categories master variability: Insights into category learning and generalization

    No full text
Variability permeates every aspect of our environment and categories help us navigate this variability. This thesis presents three projects that leverage variability to deepen our understanding of category learning and generalization. Project 1 investigates how different types of variability, learned in a prior relationally structured category learning task, affect later category generalization. The findings show that categories experienced as more diverse lead to broader generalization than homogeneous ones. Specifically, generalization widens when category exemplars exhibit heterogeneity, but not when participants encounter many different exemplars within a diverse category. In Project 2, I use variability to explore category learning processes, focusing on how the immediate context of a category—specifically its counter-category—shapes learning. By manipulating category variability in a newly developed self-regulated category learning task, I show that greater variability prompts participants to draw more samples until their category representation suffices. Interestingly, not only the category's variability but also the variability of the counter-category influences the number of samples drawn. In Project 3, I explore how category learning in the self-regulated task can be modeled within the sequential sampling framework. Our findings suggest that category variability determines the accumulation rate, while the counter-category influences the decision to stop sampling exemplars. Within this framework, I examine variability perception and the shape of the accumulation rate. I also model how between-category processes impact learning, finding that learning assimilates to the counter-category’s characteristics. In summary, this thesis provides new insights into how category variability shapes generalization, influences the category learning process, and highlights the intricate link between a category and its counter-category

    No full text
