    Defecation Syncope; Digging Deep: A Case Report

    Defecation syncope leading to cardiac arrest is a rare entity but with high mortality ratio. Here we have presented a case of 28- year old fieldworker with two episodes of syncope, the last of which culminated in a cardiac arrest requiring resuscitation by by-stander. Upon further questioning it was revealed that both of the times, the patient had an urge to defecate followed by dizziness and warmth preceding the loss of consciousness. A head up tilt table test was planned as a means to reenact the symptoms. Upon confirmation of diagnosis patient was counselled for lifestyle changes only

    Traditional and Complementary Medicines (T&CM) are an integral part of health care having deep cited roots in history for the treatment and prophylaction of various mental and physical diseases and to maintain health in good conditions. Although T&CM includes herbal medicines, acupuncture, yoga, and some other indigenous practices this review is mainly focusing on the safety issues associated with the use of herbal medicines (including herbs, herbal materials, herbal preparations, and finished herbal products) either used alone or combined with conventional pharmaceuticals. The trend of using T&CM is on the rise currently as these products are branded as completely safe and free from any kind of adverse effects. This misperception is wrong because a lot of intrinsic and extrinsic factors are responsible to affect the quality of these drugs resulting in severe health consequences. Misidentification of herbs, overdosing, adulteration, and the presence of environmental contaminants like pesticides, heavy metals, and microbial and fungal contaminants are some issues that account for the risks associated with herbal medicines. Another alarming aspect is the concurrent use of both herbal and conventional medicines resulting in interactions of natural phytochemicals with synthetic constituents of conventional medicines resulting in potentiating or antagonizing the pharmacological effects of drugs. The need for time to ensure the quality, safety, and efficacy of T&CM according to the standards of the World Health Organization to make rational use of herbal medicines safe and sound

    Stress and Anxiety among College Students and Mother’s Working Status: Is There a Link?

    Abstract: Background: Mother Child relationship is significant in the development of human beings. She is the vital factor in physical, social and cognitive growth and independence of child. This study is aimed to assess the stress and anxiety levels among adolescent students and its relationship with the mother’s employment status. Objective: To assess an association between stress and anxiety of adolescents and the working status of mothers. Methods: It was a cross-sectional survey. The data were collected from three private sector and three government sector intermediate colleges, including male and female students. Analysis was conducted on the software SPSS, version 22. Results: Overall 59% participants were male and 41% were female students. Female had higher frequency of stress and anxiety as compared to male students using the Perceived Stress Scale and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) respectively. Around 83% of the students had staying at home mothers and only 13% had working mothers. There was no statistically significant difference identified between the stress and anxiety levels among the children of working mothers and non-working mothers. Conclusion: Mothers working status is not associated with stress and anxiety among college students. It is required to conduct further studies in order to gain more detailed insight into the associations between the mental health of students and their mothers’ working statuses

    A Review on Apigenin [4’,5,7-trihydroxy-flavone]–An Emerging Anti-cancer Therapeutic Agent

    Chemotherapy works by halting or decreasing the growth of cancer cells, which multiply rapidly. Apigenin can be used to treat cancer, reduce the likelihood of cancer recurrence, stop or delay tumor growth, or shrink tumors that are causing pain and other issues. Although chemical medications are effective, they have a variety of negative effects due to killing or delaying the growth of healthy cells that grow and divide quickly. Thus anticancer therapies based on natural ingredients are emerging. Among these natural ingredients, Apigenin (Api) is a flavonoid having little toxicity with numerous bioactive qualities. Apigenin has several mechanisms to elicit its actions. Cell cycle arrest, anti-inflammatory, apoptosis, antioxidant activity, anti-carcinogenic, anti-mutagenic, anti-progression and anti-proliferative effects are all examples of Apigenin’s actions. Apigenin is involved in regulation of several proteins and factors such as Bcl-xL, Bcl-2, TNF-α, HIF-1alpha, VEGF, etc., modulation of different cellular pathways such as TRAIL, PI3K/Akt/Mtor, JAK/STAT, Wnt/β Catenin & MAPK and regulation of signal transduction. Apigenin is effective in treating and preventing various prevailing cancers including, Breast, cervical, ovarian, colon, oral, prostate, lung, liver, leukemia, lymphoma, melanoma, etc. Apigenin can be used synergistically with cisplatin, 5-fluorouracil, Taxol (Paclitaxel), IFN-gamma, Bcl-2 inhibitors (ABT-263 & HA14-1), Doxorubicin, Chyrophanol and several nano-formulations. Apigenin is also involved in the inhibition of cyclin A, cyclin B & cyclin-dependent kinase-1 [CDK1] expression and Decrease in AKT, P70RSK, and S6 Phosphorylation whereas increasing ERK1/2 and P90RSK phosphorylation

    Benign Cavum Septum Pellucidum Cystic Lesions: A Case Series

    A cavum Septum Pellucidum is a cerebrospinal fluid-filled (CSF) cavity between the lateral ventricles and is considered a normal anatomic variant sporadically seen on neuroimaging. While a cavum septum pellucidum is a relatively uncommon incidental neuro-imaging finding, symptomatic cysts of the cavum septum pellucidum are very rare, with only a few cases reported in the literature so far. This study comprises of 6 patients 1 female and 5 males, age ranging from 1-70 years old treated at 2 clinics between 2021-2024 who were being managed by an ongoing process of monitoring through follow-ups and medical measures. These cases would guide future diagnosticians who come across this pathology in patients with limited resources and reluctance for non-pharmacological interventions since it can be difficult to treat something with very little evidenced literature

    Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and its major organ complications: a narrative review on available literature

    Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex chronic autoimmune disease that is well-recognized by its dermal manifestations, like skin lesions, rash, and photosensitivity. Symptoms may vary among individuals ranging from mild to severe because of its erratic pattern of remission and flare. SLE is a systemic disease that has the tendency to influence multiple organs of the body like lungs, brain, heart, and blood, etc. which is also one of the most important reasons for SLE-mediated mortality in young and old age groups, apart from renal complications and various infections. Because SLE is an autoimmune ailment, the formation of autoantibodies is considered to be the main cause of multiple organ system effects and systemic inflammation. The presence of hyperactive B cells produces autoantibodies in combination with the removal of apoptotic cellular material, resulting in immune complex formation. This leads to an inflammatory reaction in the microvasculature – causing multi-organ complications. In this review article, the main focus is on the complications of SLE among which renal disorder is one of the most life-threatening complications. Apart from this, cardiovascular, neurological, gastrointestinal and hepatic, muscular, osteoarticular and pregnancy complications have also been discussed. It has been concluded that timely identification and targeted therapy to manage these patients is the only solution
