Resilient dimensioning of wastewater treatment plants : Uncertainty analysis and simulation with applications to the activated sludge process

    No full text
Wastewater treatment plants are commonly dimensioned based on rules of thumb and expertknowledge without a clear specification of how uncertainties have been handled. The impact of thedifferent assumptions can be quantified with uncertainty and sensitivity analysis. Weaknesses with traditional design methodology can potentially be mitigated by an increased use of simulation

    Handbok för åtgärder mot internbelastning

    No full text

Kvicksilver i Skinnmuddselets regleringsdamm - 30 års övervakning

    No full text

PFAS – how can Swedish wastewater treatment plants meet the challenge? Compilation of knowledge and guidance for water/wastewater actors regarding PFAS

    No full text
Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are everywhere around us in society, found in commercial and industrial products, the atmosphere, waste, water (waste, surface, drinking, and ground), soil, plants, animals, and even in our bodies. The use and spread of PFAS is a global societal challenge, affecting even the most remote places on Earth. One of the reasons why PFAS has been an attractive component in many products and industrial applications is their extreme chemical and thermal stability. However, these same properties allow for the persistence of PFAS in the environment, whereby even low PFAS emissions over time can be accumulated and pose a high risk of negative health and environmental effects. Today there are thousands of known and unknown PFAS with widely varying properties and toxicity, which makes both risk assessments and management of this growing environmental problem difficult. According to a national mass balance for PFAS emissions from products and atmospheric deposition are the major sources of PFAS in Sweden. The amount of PFAS which are environmentally dispersed via wastewater and sewage sludge can be considered a minor part. However, due to the persistence of PFAS, measures to minimize their addition via these pathways may be necessary to reduce the total environmental load. Due to their toxicity and persistence, PFAS have recently become heavily regulated, with many regulatory agencies lowering the accepted PFAS environmental level ranges. Many PFAS have already been banned in Sweden or the EU and assessment grounds or action limits have been defined for various PFAS (e.g., surface water bodies, groundwater and drinking water) to initiate measures to reduce the spread of the substances. Already announced and stricter regulations will further increase the need for measures to minimize human exposure to PFAS and their dispersal in the environment. Regardless of which measures are implemented, PFAS will remain in the environment for a long time, even if a global ban of the chemicals is implemented. Long-term management of PFAS is thus necessary to removal from the cycle gradually. The focus of mitigation actions should primarily be on heavily contaminated land and landfill leachate. The review of existing data from Swedish wastewater treatment plants WWTP and receiving recipients shows that today’s treatment processes do not remove PFAS. At some WWTP, however, an effective separation of certain PFAS is observed, which should be investigated further. Perfluorooctanoic sulfonic acid (PFOS) levels in many of the investigated inland surface waters receiving effluent from treatment plants and PFAS from other sources/pathways exceed existing limits. In many cases, however, analysis limitations prevent an assessment. Ongoing activities around various treatment and destruction techniques for PFAS show that there are currently no techniques that achieve a far-reaching PFAS removal from municipal wastewater without significant resource consumption and related costs. For the continued use of sludge as a fertilizer, upstream mitigation is needed, with e.g., disconnection or treatment of PFAS-contaminated leachate. However, several ongoing projects indicate that a certain part of PFAS in wastewater can be removed as a side-effect of advanced treatment for pharmaceutical removal. This report provides guidance to stakeholders on how the PFAS problem can be tackled. It also demonstrates the need to improve and spread PFAS knowledge, particularly those involved with PFAS measurement data, treatment techniques and PFAS in sludge.

Future sludge management at Roslagsvatten WWTP : Treatment of municipal undigested sludge with HTC-technology (OxyPower HTC™) and purification of HTC-water with SBR and MBBR

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of municipal sewage sludge has the potential to become one of the techniques for future sludge management at Swedish municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Some expected benefits of the HTC technology are a more sustainable sludge management and return of nutrients via the produced hydrochar, as well as other positive effects such as less greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient leakage into the environment. At the same time, certain challenges such as the handling of process water and uncertainties about the properties of the produced hydrochar need to be investigated. In order to answer these questions and gather practical experience for HTC as a sludge management alternative, pilot trials with C-Green's OxyPower HTC™ have been carried out at Roslagsvattens WWTP in Margretelund, Åkersberga, Sweden. Undigested sludge was treated to produce hydrochar and the produced HTC water was used at KTH/IVL's pilot plant Hammarby Sjöstadsverk in various side- or mainstream bench- and pilot-scale tests for biological treatment.Hydrochar and sludge from Roslagsvattens WWTP in Margretelund were characterized and tested in growth trials with soil and peat. The formation of carbon dioxide in soil was also evaluated. In these studies, the results were also compared with hydrochar from four other substrates (digested food waste, stable manure, biosludge from treatment of process water from a pulp/paper mill and digested mixed sludge from municipal WWTPs).The project has shown that C-Green's OxyPower HTC™ is a possible technical alternative for treating Margretelund’s undigested sewage sludge. Various tests have illustrated that the technol¬ogy can reduce the sludge volume through an increase in TS to about 65 %, not only for sewage sludge but also for several other investigated substrates. Although the HTC pilot plant could not be run continuously as a full-scale plant, still a process stability could be demonstrated. Even though the process is basically exothermic and a net production of energy over the entire process can be observed, the process needs high-quality electrical energy for operation. An efficient utilization of the surplus heat that is produced thus becomes an important aspect to achieve resource efficiency. C-Green's OxyPower HTC™ is a compact process with relatively little surface area and costs for the process are judged to be dominated by operating costs in the form of energy and operating personnel.Tests with biological treatment of HTC water showed that a mixture with only reject water from sludge dewatering is not sufficient to achieve an effective purification to avoid an increased internal load on the mainstream process. Although an effective reduction of organic pollutants measured as COD could be achieved, both short-term bench-scale and long-term pilot-scale tests indicated a clear inhibition of nitrification. While no complete inhibition was observed, long-term tests clearly showed that an adaptation of the microbial community over time cannot be expected. At the same time, supplementary long-term pilot tests with biological treatment of both HTC-water and reject water in the mainstream process showed an effective reduction of both organic pollutants such as COD and ammonium. No inhibitory effects were indicated, which is due to the very strong dilution of any inhibitory substances in the HTC water. A return to the main treatment, however, means a greatly increased internal load, mainly with respect to organic pollutants and ammonium, which require extra process volumes if the effluent levels are not to be compromised. The HTC technology thus constitutes an interesting alternative for sludge management at Swedish WWTPs, which, however, requires consideration of several aspects: the facility's fitness to handle an increased internal load, today's sludge quality for producing good quality hydrochar, and a good integration into existing processes for optimal resource utilization

Optimisation of flight routes for reduced climate impact (OP-FLYKLIM)

    No full text
The OP-FLYKLIM project investigated the potential to reduce the climate impact of aviation through climate optimization of flight routes to reduce the high-altitude effects of aviation with a focus on climate forcing from contrails and contrail cirrus under Scandinavian conditions. We have developed a calculation methodology where areas with potential to form persistent contrails are identified. The duration and climate forcing of contrails and contrail cirrus in these areas are calculated using data from SMHI's meteorological forecast model. Information on the position and climate forcing potential of these areas has been used to quantify climate forcing of flights on selected routes over a period of several months, and to test optimization of route planning for reduced climate effect with the flight planning system used by the airline Novair. Climate forcing from contrails and contrail cirrus during the flight calculated with the OP-FLYKLIM methodology is compared with calculations of climate forcing from the CO2 emitted from combustion of the jet fuel. This enables a direct comparison of the climate benefit of avoidance of contrail formation with its fuel penalty. In the future this method could be deployed in flight planning systems to enable climate optimization. The method can also be used in cost-benefit analyses of climate-optimized flight planning. We have also investigated several issues that are important for route optimization in general and for correct assessment of whether persistent contrails occur. Meteorological models of good quality in terms of forecasts of winds, temperature and humidity at flight altitude is of great importance both for ordinary route planning and for climate optimization. In OP-FLYKLIM, SMHI has tested streaming data from aircraft (so-called Mode-S EHS data) through air traffic control radars and local data receivers directly to their operational forecast model, which showed improved quality of forecasts.A persistent contrail occurs only if the humidity in the area of the flight is supersaturated relative to ice but is not already containing clouds. In the project, we have thus investigated the distribution of ice-saturated areas across Scandinavia as an average over several years using data from the ECMWF global numerical weather prediction (NWP) model. The results show a quite high potential for the formation of persistent contrails and thus for high-altitude effects in the area. Comparison to published data on the frequency of occurrence of ice supersaturated layers over Sweden and Europe indicate that observations and model data are broadly consistent. However, when comparing to observed relative humidity with respect to ice (RHI) from radiosondes directly it becomes clear that both the ECMWF model and the MetCoOp model used by SMHI for short range forecasts underestimate RHI near the tropopause, where most flights take place. As an additional means to evaluate the performance of NWP models with respect to ice supersaturation SMHI initiated observations of contrails by their climate observers. The observations were then matched against flights in the area and RHI calculated by the SMHI forecast model to determine if observations of persistent contrails also corresponded to ice supersaturation in the model. In agreement with the evaluation against radiosondes it was found that the NWP model underestimated RHI in connection with observed contrails. A correct calculation of fuel consumption and emissions during the flight is a prerequisite both for calculating its high-altitude effects and for monitoring of aviation emissions by national and international authorities. In OP-FLYKLIM the fuel consumption calculated with FOI3 methodology, used for the Swedish reporting of the national emissions from aviation to the UNFCCC and other international reporting obligations, has been compared with true fuel consumption obtained from data from the flight data recorder (FDR data) onboard aircraft on several routes. Comparison showed differences below 10% that could be explained by differences between route plans and type of aircraft in the FDR data and the FOI calculation, respectively

Estimating the Potential of Building Integration and Regional Synergies to Improve the Environmental Performance of Urban Vertical Farming

    No full text
Vertical farms have expanded rapidly in urban areas to support food system resilience. However, many of these systems source a substantial share of their material and energy requirements outside their urban environments. As urban areas produce significant shares of residual material and energy streams, there is considerable potential to explore the utilization of these streams for urban agriculture in addition to the possibility of employing underutilized urban spaces in residential and commercial buildings. This study aims to explore and assess the potential for developing more circular vertical farming systems which integrate with buildings and utilize residual material and energy streams. We focus on the symbiotic development of a hypothetical urban farm located in the basement of a residential building in Stockholm. Life cycle assessment is used to quantify the environmental performance of synergies related to energy integration and circular material use. Energy-related scenarios include the integration of the farm's waste heat with the host building's heating system and the utilization of solar PV. Circular material synergies include growing media and fertilizers based on residual materials from a local brewery and biogas plant. Finally, a local pick-up system is studied to reduce transportation. The results point to large benefits from integrating the urban farm with the building energy system, reducing the vertical farm's GHG emissions up to 40%. Synergies with the brewery also result in GHG emissions reductions of roughly 20%. No significant change in the environmental impacts was found from the use of solar energy, while the local pick-up system reduces environmental impacts from logistics, although this does not substantially lower the overall environmental impacts. However, there are some trade-offs where scenarios with added infrastructure can also increase material and water resource depletion. The results from the synergies reviewed suggest that proximity and host-building synergies can improve the material and energy efficiency of urban vertical farms. The results provide insights to residential building owners on the benefits of employing residual space for urban food provisioning and knowledge to expand the use of vertical farming and circular economy principles in an urban context

Fossil Free Airborne Search and Rescue Services

To meet the Swedish climate target of net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2045, it has become more and more urgent for the aviation sector to reduce its climate footprint. However, this represents a challenge for the non-commercial part of the aviation sector such as the air borne search-and-rescue services, as their activities cannot be compromised by the climate target. Increased use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) is a way to achieve the climate target, while still not compromising the mission for this part of aviation.  However, due to a high demand on SAF, their availability and possibility to supply the aviation sector in Sweden as well as their environmental impact in relation to the climate target is still somewhat uncertain. This report aims to increase the understanding in these issues by first reviewing the domestic feedstock availability and calculating the SAF production potential within Sweden. Thereafter, an assessment was done on how the aviation fuel market could vary in Sweden by 2045 due to the strength of the GHG reduction mandate and the dependence or independence of fuel from outside Sweden. This was done through 4 different future scenarios based on a mathematical model. Finally, the environmental impact of selected SAFs was evaluated by life cycle assessment (LCA) following the method described in the recast of the Renewable Energy Directive (REDII). The assessment was done based on the currently available data. Thus, the future change in the technology and other circumstances were not taken into account.  The current and future (2045) Swedish production potential of jet fuel was investigated via 4 different pathways, i.e., Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) from biogenic waste oils, Gasification-based Fischer-Tropsch (G-FT) from forest residues, Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL) from forest residues and Power-to-Liquid (PtL) from biogenic captured CO2 and H2 from electrolysis via Fischer-Tropsh (FT). The pathways, of the assessed ones, having the highest current and future potential considering feedstock supply are G-FT and HTL. The results were however considerably affected by the assumptions made on process yield. The production potential of PtL was not as high as the other pathways due to low availability of feedstock. Finally, HEFA was the pathway with the lowest potential due to the low availability of domestic raw material. Based on the scenario analysis, the future of fossil free jet fuel is highly dependent of the price of fuel as well as the maximum allowed blending ratio of fossil free jet fuel. In this particular scenario analysis, domestic ATJ and HEFA was favored by the model thanks to their low production costs and avoided import costs, since the fuel is produced in Sweden. However, although the production plants used in the model will be constructed within Swedish borders, it is unlikely that domestic HEFA feedstock would be sufficient to supply them and there would likely be an import of waste oils to meet the demand of the plants.  The environmental assessment was done on UCO-based HEFA and PtL. HEFA was assessed as it is the fuel that the Search and Rescue fleet used during the pilot phase of this project. PtL was assessed for the sake of comparison and also because most data for PtL production was already available. Both HEFA and PtL show the potential of reducing the fossil GHG emissions up to 70 and 77%, respectively. However, with the technical and legislative limitations, it is not yet possible to use pure SAF in the aviation sector. This leads to the potential emission reduction of the greenhouse gases being lower than 42%. SAF production and transportation of feedstock are one of the main contributors to the emissions. In general, HEFA production has higher climate impact than the production of PtL. In addition, UCO which is the feedstock for HEFA was assumed to be collected in China. This gives a significantly higher impact compared to the PtL-process where all activities were assumed to take place in Sweden. This implies that the climate impact of HEFA can be reduced if the UCO can be collected domestically. However, as the assessment shows, the climate target will be difficult to achieve when using HEFA or PtL. The challenge lies on the upstream processes of these two SAF which currently are still fossil-based. For HEFA, it is common that H2 is produced from natural gas while for PtL, the production of raw materials used in electrolysis and carbon capture process such as chemicals and catalysts contribute to fossil emissions.
