Quantification of Dopamine Cells in a PreclinicalRodent Model of Parkinson’s Disease Using DeepLearning Approaches
The estimation of neuron numbers in defined brain nuclei is important for investigations into preclinical rodent models of neuro-degenerative disorders as well as therapeutical interventions. Traditional manual analysis of immunohistochemical (IHC) images is not only labor-intensive but also prone to subjectivity, leading to reduced reproducibility. While the stereological quantification using the optical fractionator principle remains the gold standard for unbiased estimation, its application demands specialized equipment, proprietary software, and significant time investment. Recent advancements in computer vision and machine learning have paved the way for automated solutions to these challenges. After training several detector networks we evaluated the individual performance against manual quantification (Ground Truth), the best performing network (YOLOv11m) was then compared against manual quantification and quantification obtained from proprietary software (AIforia®). The algorithm demonstrates superior efficiency in both training and inference times, alongside high accuracy in cell detection. The weights and program are freely available on our GitLab page, including a step-by-step user guide for application and further training. Our proposed network therefore provides a fast and highly reproducible evaluation of dopaminergic cell numbers in the rat Substantia Nigra with minimal programming knowledge
Genital examinations in cases of suspected ‘female genital mutilation’ in Sweden 1982–2022 : lawful decisions resulting in structural injustice
This paper critically examines the disproportionate impact of Sweden’s legal and policy measures aimed at detecting and prosecuting ‘female genital mutilation’ (FGM) within immigrant communities. Despite three criminal court cases related to FGM performed in African countries, forced genital examinations—central to many investigations—have not resulted in any prosecutions. This raises significant concerns about the effectiveness and proportionality of current practices. Drawing on an archive of police case files and interviews with professionals involved in FGM investigations, we explore how legal frameworks, while intended to protect children, apparently indicate a pattern of over-policing and structural injustice. Our analysis highlights the disconnect between policies rooted in suspicion and control and the cultural shifts occurring within affected communities, where attitudes toward the circumcision of girls have evolved due to migration. We argue that Sweden’s reliance on invasive measures risks exacerbating the marginalisation of immigrant groups and underscores the need for more nuanced, trust-building approaches. The findings call for a re-evaluation of current strategies to ensure that interventions are proportionate and sensitive to evolving cultural contexts, while still protecting the rights and well-being of children
Health, social, and civic society professionals' and volunteers' view on the health among young people in unstable housing situations in the south of Sweden : a qualitative interview study
Background: Stable housing is important for overall health and well-being among young people, and poor-quality housing can trigger multiple diseases, including infections, injuries, chronic diseases, and psychological problems. However, many young people in Sweden struggle with an unstable housing situation. It is therefore important to illuminate how health, social, and civic society professionals and volunteers see the overall health situation for young people (16–27 years) in unstable housing situations. Method: Sixteen health, social, and civic society professionals and volunteers, from both municipal and governmental organizations and civic society, were interviewed during 2024 and were reached through convenience and purposive sampling. The data was analyzed with content analysis. Results: The results showed that the professionals and volunteers considered that there is a lack of basic necessities, such as food and clothes and often also a place to sleep, among young people in unstable housing situations. They also recounted that the bodies of those young people are weakened as a result of the unstable situation, with its stress and lack of proper care. There are, however, challenges with regard to accessing healthcare and the young people in question are often hesitant to seek care, and inclined to avoid it. Furthermore, the participants mentioned psychosocial challenges, due to loneliness and lack of close contacts with family and friends, and said that people struggling with homelessness tend to suffer from mental illness. Conclusion: Young people in unstable housing situations need support to stabilize them for the future, and in order to work toward a more stable housing situation for these people in the county of Scania, a holistic approach is necessary. This is crucial in view of their overall health, as well as their well-being and life satisfaction
Smart material estimation for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) sector
This study presents a novel AI-based approach that integrates deep learning techniques for symbol and text recognition with predictive modeling based on historical project data. The aim is to automate and enhance material cost estimation and procurement in Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) projects. Unlike existing methods, our approach combines data extraction from Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) with predictive modeling to improve estimation accuracy. In addition, we introduce methods such as tiling and augmentation to optimize the accuracy of symbol recognition in complex and noisy industrial diagrams. We also present methods for managing diverse symbology, improving annotations, and handling background noise in actual industrial blueprints. Furthermore, we apply domain-specific knowledge rules while utilizing available historical data repositories from past engineering projects. Our findings suggest significant potential for engineering time and cost savings in large-scale EPC projects, supported by empirical analysis of development costs in relation to engineering hours saved
Prevention of pressure ulcers, malnutrition, poor oral health, and falls among older persons in nursing homes in Sweden - healthcare professionals’ experiences of participating in a co-design project : A qualitative study
Aim: To explore how healthcare professionals in nursing homes experienced participating in a co-design project aiming to improve the prevention of pressure ulcers, malnutrition, poor oral health, and falls among older persons. Methods: Nineteen healthcare professionals in Swedish nursing homes participated in eleven focus-group/individual interviews between October and November 2022. The interviews were semi-structured, audio recorded, and transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Two themes were generated, prerequisites and consequences, each with two subthemes: individual perspective and organizational perspective. Conclusion: Participation in a co-design project can be complex since it involves both individual and organizational prerequisites, suggesting that researchers should identify and address potential challenges beforehand for effective participation. Participation involves positive consequences, such as increased knowledge to the preventive work. Also, participation involves negative aspects, including competing work demands, emphasizing the importance of careful planning to maximize the benefits of co-design projects in nursing homes
Graphene-reinforced concrete in slab-on-ground construction
Plattans lastfall inkluderar egenlast, snölast och nyttig last.
The Colonised Armour : A post-colonial analysis of the Barbarian armour in Baldur's Gate III
Improving Dental Care for those exposed to Sexual Abuse
For many people, a trip to the dentist can be nerve-wracking and mildly unpleasant, but for those exposed to sexual abuse it can be a deeply distressing experience that triggers overwhelming fear, anxiety, and physical symptoms. Despite oral health being essential for our overall wellbeing, many struggle to seek the dental care they need, leading to long-term health and quality of life consequences. Dr Eva Wolf from Malmö University, in Sweden, has led a team of researchers to help further understand the connections between a history of sexual abuse and fear of dental care, as well as how dentists can use a trauma-informed, patient-centred approach to better support these peopleThis article originally appeared in Scientia, a publication helping to connect science and society. </p
Nanoimprint Lithography-Based Bioelectronics
This thesis examines the versatility of nanoimprint lithography (NIL) for bioelectronic devices, highlighting its capability to fabricate finely tuned surface features on flexible substrates with high resolution and scalability. Two main application areas are addressed: sustainable energy harvesting and biomedical engineering. In the first part, NIL-patterned gold electrodes were used to integrate biological photosynthetic elements, such as thylakoid membranes and chloroplasts, for light-to-electricity conversion. Microwell surface modifications enhanced biocatalyst loading and electron transfer, while capacitive layers enabled simultaneous energy storage and delivery. The assembled photobioanodes, tested under ambient and artificial light, showed improved photocurrent and charge retention. Integration with enzyme-based biocathodes yielded stable, dual-function biosupercapacitors. The second part focuses on infection control in urinary catheters. NIL was used to create bactericidal nanopatterns inspired by insect wings, physically disrupting bacterial membranes and reducing E. coli viability without antibiotics. A novel NIL method enabled the fabrication of patterned catheter inserts. Additionally, a wireless sensing system with embedded electrodes monitored the open circuit potential (OCP) as an indicator of bacterial adhesion, validated in urine, flow setups, and ex vivo wound models. Overall, this work highlights NIL’s potential for developing multifunctional, miniaturized, and flexible bio-devices for real-worldbiomedical and energy applications. Paper IV in dissertation as manuscript. Not included in the full text online.</p
