Ember Light, the meeting glow : An interactive art installation to foster human connection at music festivals

    No full text
This project investigates how an art installation can be designed to promote social interaction and presence at music festivals. The project critiques the fact that modern music festivals present over-stimulating visual media that isolate people from their surroundings. This, along with the increasing use of smartphones to share the experience on social media, detaches people from the present moment, making them less likely to establish real connections with others. Through a Research through Design approach and the Design Thinking Bootleg Methodology, an art installation was developed using the Mellow Joint, a component for assembling pallets developed by the startup Mellow Designs based in Copenhagen. The art installation is inspired by the ancient experience of gathering around the fire. The design solution features a central warm light that increases in intensity as more people sit on the pallets. The user test conducted concludes that the art installation successfully evokes feelings of connection, presence and comfort, creating an environment that invites social gathering

Bioinspired mycobacterial lipid coating of porous particles for enhanced antimicrobial efficacy

    No full text
The study aimed to investigate the unique lipid composition of Mycobacterium bovis BCG and its potential to enhance antimicrobial efficacy of lipid coated mesoporous silica particles (MSPs). The bacterial lipids (BL) were extracted with petroleum ether and analyzed via LC-MS, revealing a complex mixture of phospholipids, including cardiolipin, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and triacylglycerols. Lipid coating (using bacterial lipid and lung surfactant DPPC as main component) was performed on MSPs via vesicle fusion approach and confirmed with ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. MSPs were loaded with clofazimine (CLZ), as drug model for tuberculosis. The obtained BL-DPPC-coated CLZ-MSPs were more effective in inhibiting mycobacterial growth and killing intracellular mycobacteria compared to uncoated and DPPC-coated CLZ-MSPs. The bacterial lipids show good safety profile on M1-like and M2-like human primary macrophages without inducing strong immune response or formation of foam cells. These findings suggest that the obtained bacterial lipid coatings can improve antimicrobial efficacy in treating both extracellular and intracellular mycobacteria infections directly in the lungs

    No full text

Rented, Raised & Removed : A Case Study of Urban Change and the Social Consequences ofTourism in Lisbon

    No full text
The rapid growth of tourism in Lisbon’s historic city center has, in recent years, led to changes in both the physical structure of the city and its social composition. This development has created a need to examine the urban transformations and social consequences that follow as a result of the city´s development. This bachelor's thesis constitutes a qualitative case study of Lisbon's historic city center. Through field observations and interviews with both experts and residents, this study investigates the changes taking place in the neighborhoods of Alfama, Mouraria, Baixa, Chiado, and Bairro Alto areas that are particularly affected by increased tourism. The thesis highlights how the tourism industry significantly reshapes the city’s physical structure, its identity, and the living conditions of local residents. The analysis is grounded in theories of gentrification, touristification, tourism gentrification, neoliberal urbanism, and the right to and in the city. These theories demonstrate how Lisbon has become an arena for capital interests, where the resident population risks being marginalized. At the same time, local discontent is growing, calling for regulation and greater social responsibility in urban development. This thesis shows how tourism acts as a catalyst for broader processes of urban transformation and emphasizes the need for a more socially oriented approach to the city's future planning.

School Segregation in Relation to Residential Segregation : A Case Study of Rosengård School

    No full text
Abstract  This study examines the relationship between school segregation and residential segregation with a focus on Malmö municipality and the compensatory work of the Rosengård school. Through a qualitative examination of the case, Rosengård school approaches to preventing inequality in the school environment are analyzed. The information presented includes a document from the primary school administration, statistics from the city of Malmö, and interviews with two teachers. The study is based on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social reproduction, where the concepts of habitus, capital and field are used to analyze the school’s structural and pedagogical measures. The results show that methods such as increased study calm, language- developing teaching, and individual adaptation led to changes in students' habitus and future outlook. The study also points out that successful measures at Rosengård School can serve as inspiration for schools in similar socioeconomic contexts. The study points out the importance of locally adapted strategies and the need to understand the mechanisms of segregation from a political science and structural perspective

Performing Values, Organizing Survival : Exploring Contradiction and Compromise in Alternative Food Networks

    No full text
This thesis explores how actors within Alternative Food Networks (AFNs) navigate the complex structural constraints inherent in bottom-up efforts to create ethical alternatives to the dominant systems of food production and distribution. Through a comparative analysis of three organizations, Folkets Skafferi, Ålnarp’s Agroecology Farm, and the Malmö Food Council, it reveals how tensions between values and practical realities are constantly negotiated, rather than resolved. These tensions manifest as contradictions between idealism and realism, diversity and unity, and capability and constraint. Rather than viewing these contradictions as signs of failure, this study applies Paradox Theory and the concept of Dynamic Equilibrium to understand them as productive and ongoing processes. This approach moves beyond the traditional binaries used in AFN and Urban Agriculture (UA) literature, which often struggle to classify ambiguous and multifaceted initiatives. The research shows how organizations strategically manage tensions to sustain alternative food visions under capitalist pressures, without binding them to a normative category. As such, the findings contribute to reframing key discourses around success, failure, and innovation in AFNs, away from the focus on coherence and linearity, towards subjective and fluid adaptation. This work advances scholarly understanding of the political and social complexities embedded in grassroots food activism and offers insights into sustaining ethical food governance in contemporary urban contexts. It also furthers the effort to enrich the fields of urban planning, policy-making, and organizational studies by integrating personal and emotional insight provided by qualitative research and reflexive methodologies.

The Significance of Social Connections and Health in Relation to Loneliness Experienced by Older Adults Living at Home : A Qualitative Study

    No full text
Background and Aim: Due to ageing, physical changes can affect one's ability to actively engage with others, resulting in limitations in social connections comparable to loneliness. Hence, there is a need for research on how older adults avoid experiencing loneliness and thus promote health through social connections. The aim of this study was to describe the significance of social connections and health in relation to loneliness experienced by older adults living at home. Methods: Older adults aged 65 years and older ( n  = 16) purposively selected from a longitudinal population‐based multicentre study participated in semi‐structured interviews. The interviews were conducted in January 2024, transcribed verbatim and analysed using inductive content analysis. Findings: The findings illustrated one main category, Preventing loneliness , and three associated generic categories: The silver lining of connecting with oneself , Being surrounded by meaningful connections and Striving to maintain an active and healthy life. Conclusion: Preventing loneliness may be one important aspect of healthy ageing. However, for some older adults, time alone offers enrichment and well‐being, with routines playing a key role. Meaningful connections and feeling needed are crucial in preventing loneliness, especially as social networks may decline with age. An active and healthy life also prevents loneliness, though barriers like age‐related limitations must be addressed. It is, therefore, important to address loneliness in society. Furthermore, it is essential that healthcare education incorporates the impact of loneliness on older adults to promote healthy ageing

From Victims To Heroes : Framing and Rhetorical Strategies in Ukrainian Red Cross’ communications (2022–2024)

    No full text
This paper explores the communication strategies employed by the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS) through its press releases published during the Russo-Ukrainian War. While more organisations have increasingly focused on digital communication, the press release remains a crucial tool for reaching stakeholders, raising awareness, and securing funds. Drawing on narrative theory and framing theory, this study conducts a content analysis of 164 press releases published between 2022 and 2025 to investigate how the URCS builds narratives in their press releases and how they use storytelling and rhetoric to reinforce their message. Using a custom Python script integrated with the ChatGPT API, the releases are then categorised and analysed. The findings show that these communications contain a dominant focus on informative, fact-based storytelling with high credibility and logical reasoning, with moderate use of emotional appeals. The most prevalent narrative frames were heroic, solution, and victim frames, which together accounted for over 90% of the content. Notably, the framing shifted over time: early crisis communications highlighted victims and problems with neutral-to-negative sentiment, whereas later communications increasingly highlighted heroic responders and solutions with more positive sentiment. These findings indicate a strategic adaptation in humanitarian messaging, balancing portrayals of suffering with empowering narratives that sustain public engagement
