Women's Experience of Non-Motherhood and Reproductive Decision-Making in Sweden
This thesis explores women’s experiences of non-motherhood and reproductive decision-making in a Swedish setting. Existing research often frames childlessness as either voluntary or involuntary, overlooking ambivalence and undecidedness. This study focuses on seven women aged 35–40 and their reflections and deliberations regarding reproductive options as well as their experiences of non-motherhood. Drawing on qualitative, unstructured interviews, the findings show that reproductive decision-making is complex, ongoing, and non-linear. Participants reflected on personal desires as well as broader social, ethical, relational, and practical factors. Several were simultaneously debating both whether and how to become mothers, showing that the question about whether or not to become a mother is not a binary choice. The study also highlights the role of social norms and access to reproductive technologies, such as solo motherhood through medically assisted reproduction. Overall, the findings illustrate the diversity and fluidity of non-motherhood experiences, showing that reproductive decisions are socially embedded and shaped by multiple, intersecting factors
Swedish doctoral students' perceptions of how power asymmetries and career gatekeeping influence the risk of sexual harassment
Power asymmetries and career gatekeeping have been highlighted in previous research as central factors for understanding why doctoral students are vulnerable to sexual harassment. However, there is a lack of up-to-date research addressing how power and career gatekeeping impact the perceived risk of sexual harassment among doctoral students in the Swedish context. The aim of the present study is to explore how the perceived risk of sexual harassment among doctoral students is affected by the distinctive power relations and career gatekeeping that are characteristic of the doctoral student position. The data comprise six focus groups that included a total of 18 doctoral students enrolled at a Swedish university. The results show that the established procedures for academic career advancement have a pervasive impact on the perceived risk of sexual harassment, with career gatekeeping playing a pivotal role as senior academics are perceived as gatekeepers in relation to career opportunities
Multiraciality and mental health : the Cultural Formulation Interview as an instrument for exploring in-between identities and third spaces
The multiracial population has grown substantially across the Global North, with Sweden having one of the largest per capita mixed populations worldwide. Despite this demographic shift, mental healthcare practitioners are often unprepared to address the complex experiences of mixed individuals, who navigate ambiguous racial and ethnic spaces that challenge traditional monolithic categories. We here include transracial adoptees as part of the mixed population, recognizing their unique experiences of racialized in-betweenness. Historical narratives have long pathologized mixed individuals through harmful stereotypes such as the "tragic mulatto" and "marginal man", portraying them as inherently maladjusted. Contemporary research presents mixed findings regarding mental health outcomes in multiracial populations, with some studies reporting higher rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation, while others find no substantial differences compared to monoracial groups. This article argues for a more nuanced, person-centered approach to understanding mixed identity in healthcare and foregrounds the Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI) as a valuable clinical instrument. The ethnographic framework of the CFI enables exploration of complex identity negotiations, experiences of racism and discrimination, and available resources without reinforcing deficit perspectives. By fostering culturally attuned practices, mental healthcare can better serve an increasingly diverse society and address the multilayered experiences of multiracial individuals
Local Leadership in Development Projects : A Critical Analysis of Power Relations in Danish Development Cooperation
Stav i svijest medicinskih sestara o prehrani i pothranjenosti
Pozadina: Medicinske sestre igraju ključnu ulogu u edukaciji pacijenata o zdravlju i prehrani, osnažujući ih da donose informirane odluke o prehrani.
Exploring Potential Use Cases and Barriers for Digital Twin Usage in Socially Sustainable Urban Planning
Faced with urbanisation and environmental concerns, cities of various sizes have in recent years taken action towards becoming smart and sustainable. Discussions on economic, environmental, and social sustainability dimensions have gained prominence across various domains, including urban planning. In relation, interest in Urban Digital Twins (UDT) has grown, and this especially with its potential for real-time data representation in virtual environments. Indeed, cities are investing in research initiatives, and several practical implementations are currently exploring the use of UDTs for smart mobility planning, infrastructure monitoring and management, and energy optimisation towards environmental sustainability. Greatly underexplored, however, is the potential use of UDTs for promoting social sustainability. The present study thus aims to explore how working professionals involved in urban planning perceive opportunities for UDTs to be used in fostering socially sustainable development. Importance is moreover placed on identifying potential barriers in considering social sustainability in the UDT. With these aims, focus groups with working professionals are used to mirror the collaborative nature of urban planning. A thematic analysis is moreover performed to categorise findings into relevant themes, whereafter semi-structured interviews with external key informants are utilised to reflect on the opinions of professionals and increase thematic understanding. Based on the findings, a number of proposals are made with regards to opportunities for UDT usage to support socially sustainable planning. Barriers to the application of UDTs in this specific use case are moreover specified.
Identification of Prompt Proton Emission in N = Z − 1 61Ga : Isospin Symmetry at the Limit of Nuclear Binding
Excited states in the proton drip line nucleus 61Ga were populated via the fusion-evaporation reaction 24Mg(40Ca,2)61Ga. The experimental setup at Argonne National Laboratory comprised a novel combination of the Gammasphere array with two CD-shaped double-sided Si-strip detectors inside the Microball CsI(Tl) charged-particle detection array, as well as the Neutron-Shell liquid scintillators and the Fragment Mass Analyzer. Owing to the setup’s unprecedented in-beam proton spectroscopy and tracking capabilities, a coincidence between a 957.6(5)-keV ray and a 1.876(24)-MeV proton line was observed, which identifies the quasibound proton 9/2 single-particle state in 61Ga at =2150(34) keV. This probes isospin symmetry at the limit of nuclear binding by providing a unique challenge for the shell-model interpretation of mirror nuclei beyond doubly magic 56Ni
