Love felt or examined - Student encounters with ”A Serious Game”

    No full text

Transitioning from doctoral student to doctoral supervisor

    No full text
The purpose of this research is to provide a first-person account of the dynamics and needed adaptations in an academic’s transition from being a doctoral student to a doctoral supervisor. By employing autoethnography, this study explores the inner experiences, challenges, and insights encountered in the process of developing a supervisory identity, with the aim of contributing to broader discussions on academic development and doctoral education. ChatGPT was used as a critical discussion partner during the author’s reflections. Through reflexive thematic analysis, five core themes were generated: Emergent supervisory identity, Balancing guidance and student autonomy, Collaborative and mutual learning, Communication and meta-reflection, and Aspirations for supervisory development. Each theme reflects the complexity and fluidity of this transition and underscores the evolving nature of supervisory identity. The findings contribute to the literature on doctoral supervision by providing insights into the nuanced, evolving nature of supervisory identity, with implications for supervision pedagogy and the professional development of new supervisors. Through the integration of an AI chatbot, the study is highly original and novel. The methodological approach may offer a model for using AI as a reflective partner in qualitative research, particularly in studies that prioritise self-reflection and critical engagement with personal experience

Exploring key factors related to child well-being : a community-based participatory research together with children with migration background residing in socio-economically disadvantaged areas of Malmö, Sweden

    No full text
Background: Children with migration background, living in socio-economically disadvantaged areas, are exposed to numerous risk that can negatively affect their well-being. Understanding which key factors build and enable well-being of children with these experiences are therefore essential to support and strengthen their positive development and possibilities to feel well. Studies that include children’s own perspectives and voices in initiatives that concerns them is however scarce, and there is an increased need for participation of children with diverse experiences and life situations in research and knowledge production. Therefore, the aim of this study was to, through a participatory process, explore and enhance the understanding of key factors in the social context that contribute to child well-being among children with a migration background. Methods: Thirty-one children, aged 9–12, from three disadvantaged areas in Malmö, Sweden, participated together with researchers in a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) team, exploring factors related to their well-being in their social context. Multi-stage focus groups were held over a year (2023–2024), with different sessions facilitating dialog on the research topic. In total, 49 sessions took place, each on average duration of 1.5 h. The data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: Four main themes, representing key factors related to child well-being, were identified: Enriching Leisure Time, Resourceful Places, Belonging to a Community and Welfare System and Rights. The themes covered structural aspects, such as school, healthcare and human rights, but also more personal dimensions, like close relations and the near environment, related to Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory of human development. Conclusion: The dialogs with the children provided a deeper understanding and a holistic view of the perceptions of children with migration backgrounds residing in socio-economically disadvantaged areas regarding essential factors for their well-being. Future research should focus on developing strategies that ensure children’s access to the factors they have identified as fundamental to their well-being. Our study has further shown that it is pivotal to ensure children’s inclusion and participation in health promotion initiatives. These initiatives need to be contextually relevant and work toward building community capacity, to promote child well-being

Artificial Intelligence in Recruitment : A Qualitative Study on Fairness, Accuracy and Transparency in AI-Based SelectionSystems

    No full text
This study investigates how AI, specifically ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) systems, affect the fairness of selection in recruitment. As AI tools become increasingly common in specific HR and work thatrequires a certain selection, the need to understand both the practical and ethical consequences of theiruse increases. The main focus of the study is based on the technical functions of ATS systems such asCV parsing and decision support algorithms in connection with concepts such as bias, transparency andaccuracy. Using a qualitative method, 13 semi-structured interviews were conducted with people whowork closely with recruitment and in connection with ATS systems. The analysis was done using a deductive approach where previous research and theories presented in the work are compared with theresults from the interviews. A thematic analysis was used to identify themes in the interview responses. The results show that ATS can streamline selection but also recreate inequalities in the assessment ofcandidates compared to historical data. Interviewees expressed concerns about a lack of transparency, insufficient accuracy and bias - especially in relation to keywords such as language, name and background. The study shows that human insight is a critical part of navigating and controlling tools that useartificial intelligence

    No full text
This thesis explores the role of skateboarding in urban planning, using Malmö as a case study. Focusing on the installation Love Malmö, the study investigates how urban space is experienced, produced, and negotiated by local skateboarders. The theoretical framework draws on Henri Lefebvre’s spatial triad and placemaking theory to analyse the relationship between conceived, perceived, and lived space. Through a qualitative methodology including interviews, observations, and thematic analysis, the research examines Malmö’s official goals for skateboarding and how they are reflected in practice. The findings suggest that Malmö has made significant progress in integrating skateboarding into its urban fabric, but that challenges remain, especially regarding inclusion, accessibility, and outreach in suburban areas. The thesis concludes that user involvement and long-term co-creation are essential for sustaining Malmö’s reputation as a skate-friendly city and offers reflections relevant for other cities seeking to incorporate skateboarding into urban development.

A Gender Equality for the Green Reindustrialisation : Work of Change, Population and “The Green Transition”

This thesis examines how managers in Skellefteå municipality articulate gender equality and gender equality policy change work in relation to the so-called green transition, with a focus on issues of growth, population increase, and social planning. The study is based on qualitative interviews with seven managers and a policy analysis of two municipal development strategies produced in 2015 and 2022, respectively. The thesis relates to a context of extensive investments in the so-called green economy and reindustrialisation, represented here by Northvolt's battery factory, which was established in Skellefteå municipality in 2017. The results show that managers and policy documents attach different meanings to the concept of gender equality, but that in the initial period – 2015-2022 – great importance is attached to attracting women to the municipality as a way of increasing the population. Making the municipality attractive to women is expressed in many different ways, for example through investments in local cultural life and ambitious goals for the education system. Discourses on gender equality construct notions of gender, but also of class and “women's interests”. However, gender equality is eventually challenged by concepts such as inclusion and social sustainability in municipal development work. The revised version of the development strategy published in 2022 is characterized by a new industrial discourse in which gender equality becomes part of the effort to develop the skills of the population. Previous research is used to show how the new industrial shift also tends to be a shift toward earlier ideals that link traditional masculinity, industrial work, and growth

    No full text
This dissertation in sports science explores how Physical Activity on Prescription (PAP) is used as a health-promoting method for children in the school setting – a context in which the method has so far been studied to a limited extent. Given that many children are insufficiently physically active and do not meet the recommended levels of physical activity, schools have been identified as an important arena for health-promoting interventions. At the same time, it remains unclear how a medical method like PAP functions within the pedagogical everyday life of schools. Using qualitative methods and drawing on the perspectives of children, guardians, and school staff, the study examines how PAP is understood, organized, and received in the complex school environment. The results show that PAP can function as a door-opener to physical activity, particularly for children who might otherwise be excluded from organised physical activity. At the same time, tensions emerge between medical and pedagogical logics, between individual adaptation and shifting of responsibility, and between support and the risk of stigmatization. For children, it is not the prescription itself that is decisive, but the content of the activity, the relationships and the sense of context. The thesis contributes new knowledge about how school-based health interventions can be designed to be more equitable, child-centered, and sustainable in the long term. By integrating medical, sociological, and pedagogical perspectives, the study highlights the need to develop more rights-based and child-sensitive approaches to health promotion. With a summary in english. Paper 4 in dissertation as manuscript. </p

On the Fine Line between Care and Control : Ethical Dilemmas, Organisational Values and Frontline Adaptation Strategies in Danish Asylum Centres

    No full text
This thesis examines how Red Cross staff in Danish asylum centres navigate the ethical challenges of their role. Positioned simultaneously as agents of the state and of migrants, workers juggle competing demands of care and control. Drawing on semi-structured interviews and grounded in street-level bureaucracy theory and Ahrne’s (1994) theory of organisations, this study contributes to implementation scholarship by investigating how humanitarian workers contracted by the state interpret organisational values and professional roles, and how these guide internal considerations and external decision-making. Findings reveal that staff responded to dilemmas through rule-bending, covert resistance, and advocacy, each reflecting differing professional identities and capacities to separate opinions from tasks. The principle of neutrality emerges as contested: some see it as essential to humanitarianism, others as sustaining an oppressive system. As European states increasingly outsource control to humanitarian organisations, it is imperative to understand how practitioners reconcile these tasks with their humanitarian identity
