Individuals’ experiences of living with a permanent colostomy : A literature review

    No full text
Background: Living with a permanent colostomy represents a significant change in a person’s life. A colostomy can be an important part of symptom relief and treatment for conditions such as colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases. Despite this life-altering surgery, personal experiences of living with a colostomy are not always acknowledged. Nurses play a central role in the care of this large patient group within healthcare settings. By highlighting individuals’ experiences, healthcare professionals can gain insight into the challenges that shape their daily life’s which are crucial for ensuring sense of security, quality of life and acceptance. Aim: To describe individuals’ experiences of living with a permanent colostomy. Method: A literature review with a qualitative approach. The databases CINAHL and PubMed were used for data collection. The articles were quality-assessed using the SBU’s quality assessment tool. Results: Eleven articles were included in the study’s results, which led to four main categories: adjustment in daily life, a changed identity, the need adjust to daily life and the need for acceptance. Conclusion: Shame, feelings of sadness and a changed body image were common feelings expressed by individuals. Living with a colostomy requires careful planning in daily life concerning diet, clothing and preventing leakage. Through a holistic perspective, the nurse can promote a sense of coherence (KASAM) in individuals with a colostomy, which may facilitate acceptance and adaptation as well as improve quality of life. At the same time, many individuals express gratitude for surviving and adapting in the new situation

The social worker’s opinion about the changes within custody transfer after the implementation of the convention on the rights of the child as law in Sweden

    No full text
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the social worker's views regarding custody transfer and what has changed since the Convention on the Rights of the Child was introduced as law in 2020 in Sweden. The study has been conducted through a semi-structured interview with four participants, all of whom have worked in the profession both before and after the Convention on the Rights of the Child became law. Thematic analysis was done on the transcripts of the interviews which resulted in different themes that were discussed in the analysis part. No clear differences have been demonstrated. Changes that have taken place cannot clearly be traced solely to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Whether the best interests of the child have been given more influence in custody transfer investigations remains to be studied further

Children as next of kin in primary school : A qualitative study of children as next of kin to parents with mental illness, physical illness, substance dependency, or who have passed away – from a school counselor’s perspective

    No full text
The aim of our study is to investigate how children and adolescents are affected by being next of kin to parents with mental illness, somatic illness, substance abuse problems, or parents who have passed away. We have specifically focused on how the children’s schooling, mental health, and social relationships are influenced from the perspective of school counselors, as well as how they perceive the school’s opportunities and challenges in providing support. To answer our research questions, we conducted a qualitative study based on five semi-structured interviews with school counselors employed at primary schools in southern Sweden. The study has been analyzed using systems theory, stigma theory, attachment theory, and the concept of professional discretion, which together contributed to a deeper understanding of children's life situations and the school’s role in support work. The results show that children who are next of kin often exhibit changes in behavior and mental well-being, which in turn affect their academic performance and social interaction. The school counselors describe how the school’s support for these children is limited by a lack of resources, unclear structures, and varying degrees of collaboration with external actors. At the same time, a strong commitment and a desire to improve support and make these children’s needs visible in the school environment were expressed

The construction and real estate sector is responsible for a significant climate impact, with concrete production for foundations accounting for a large share of the emissions. To reduce these emissions and find more sustainable solutions, alternatives to ground slabs have been introduced. This thesis investigates whether traditional materials such as concrete and EPS can be replaced with wood and cellular glass in a foundation developed for single-family houses. A challenge with wood is ensuring moisture safety. The purpose is to develop a simulation model that reflects heat and moisture transport in the structure and to analyse its building physical properties. Questions answered include how simulations can be conducted in CALFEM, how climate and the isolation variations affect temperature and moisture distributions. The risk of moisture damage in the construction is also assessed. The study is based on stationary two-dimensional simulations in CALFEM according to the finite element method where time-dependent variations are excluded. The model includes three cases: Case 1 represents the original design, Case 2 increases the amount of cellular glass underneath, and Case 3 increases the insulation both underneath and at the outer edge by moving the outermost wooden joist further into the foundation. The cases are studied under summer and winter conditions in Malmö and Kiruna, where moisture distribution across the foundation is analysed. The results show that CALFEM is an effective and reliable tool that generates results in line with theory. The simulations show that the amount and placement of cellular glass have a decisive impact on counteracting harmful moisture migration. The original design only meets the relative humidity limit in Malmö during summer, the mildest climate. In colder zones like Kiruna, none of the cases meet the requirements, suggesting further insulation is needed. The construction performs better in southern Sweden, but insulation measures are necessary in all climates to ensure moisture safety

Woven Stories : Exploring the intangible cultural heritage of woven bands in an explorative authoethnographic process through the practice of annotated bands

    No full text
As textiles is becoming mass manufactured in large factories the previous personal relationship people have had with textiles is disappearing. With textile waste becoming a bigger environmental issue a shift in attitudes towards textiles is needed. This thesis is made possible through a collaboration with Nordiska Museet (The Nordic Museum) in Stockholm on their coming exhibition Nordic Wool and Linen. The exhibition will provide an historic reflection over the production of textiles and how it has been brought into today. The object of inquire is the Nordic tradition of band weaving with a rigid heddle. Through an explorative process utilizing embodied and authoethnographical practices, intangible values in band weaving have been discovered and brought to life. The thesis presents the design concept Annotated bands as a medium to unmask intangible qualities valued by the weaver to the viewer of the bands. Woven bands are annotated, through text, video or pictures by the weaver, for them to share what they value in their weaving. One aim is that the viewer will feel a deeper connection to weaving and the weaver, starting the process of reshaping the relationship to textiles. As band weaving is fading practices, exposing more people to band weaving is with the intention of spreading the craft. Annotated bands create a unique experience of discovery a hand made textile, exposing more people to its intangible values

Beyond Integration : Intersecting Identities and Labour Market Outcomes for Tigrayan Women in Stockholm

    No full text
Moving beyond conventional integration discourses, this thesis critically examines how intersecting identities of race, gender and migration interact with structural and institutional processes shape labour market outcomes of Tigrayan immigrant women, an ethnic group originating from northern Ethiopia, who have migrated and settled in Stockholm, Sweden. Employing a qualitative case study approach based on semi-structured interviews, the study explores how intersecting identities influence participants’ experiences of exclusion within the Swedish labour market. The findings reveal patterns of discriminatory hiring practices, racialised perceptions of competence, employment hiearchies, racialised othering, concentration in the secondary labour market, as well as wage and gender disparities. This analysis, guided by Acker’s theory of Inequality Regimes and supported by Crenshaw’s framework of Intersectionality, interprets the participants’ experiences as manifestations of systemic inequality embedded in organisational and institutional structures. By centering the lived experiences of Tigrayan women, the study challenges one-dimensional understandings of integration and engages with the field of International Migration and Ethnic Relations. It calls for a shift toward intersectionality-informed labour market policies and practices that actively confront, rather than obscure, the structural barriers facing racialised migrant women in Sweden

Contextual Non-Consent : Notes From a "Failed" Interview Study with LGBTQ plus Youth in State Care

    No full text
This article explores the ethical complexities encountered during a research project, where one sub-study aimed at interviewing LGBTQ+ youth in state care. Using a theoretical framework of ethics of care and the concept of consent, we discuss our difficulties finding interviewees and our decision to stop recruiting because of ethical considerations. We aim to show: (1) How different forms of care were expressed during the fieldwork process, and (2) How care practices and non-actions during this process constituted a contextual non-consent. We analyze the ethical dimensions of the fieldwork process and argue that this was an example of how a contextual non-consent was developed, based on lack of response from youth, gatekeepers' hesitations, the signals we received from allied professionals within NGOs acting as gate-keepers and the professionals in care facilities we interviewed, together with our own mitigations of the risks of contacting youth in facilities where we reached the conclusion that not conducting a certain study will sometimes be the most ethical way of doing research with a vulnerable groups. The study highlights the importance of continuous ethical reflection and the potential need to abandon research plans to protect vulnerable groups. The findings underscore the ethical responsibility of researchers to prioritize the well-being of participants over the pursuit of data, especially when dealing with marginalized populations. This case study contributes to the broader discourse on ethical research practices and the nuanced understanding of consent in qualitative research

Like Finding Home Among Others : A Qualitative Study about Queer Safe Space and its Meaning for Queer Identity Development

    No full text
Background: To live as a queer person in a heteronormative world may affect the individual in different ways. One way to handle deviation from the norm is to create your own spaces where you and like-minded people may be in majority. Queer separatist spaces have historically been used to create empowering and safe contexts for LGBTQ-people. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the significance of queer separatist spaces on the participant's queer identity development. Method: Seven qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with people who had participated in at least one event arranged by the national association Lesbisk makt. Theory: The empirical work was interpreted based on queer phenomenology and theory of deviant identity and stigma identity. Result: The results are presented in three main themes: separatism as a phenomenon, participation in the space, and identity and the separatist space. The participants generally see queer separatist spaces as something positive. They state different reasons why they participate in the separatist space and how they feel that they need it. The participants experience that their queer identity plays a different role in different contexts and that different factors influence it. Conclusion: It appears that queer separatist spaces play a role in the participants' queer identity development. It is about different factors, such as the definition of the separatist space, how and when the participant seeks out the space, and what conditions one has when seeking out the queer separatist context

Stories of Change: Leadership Narratives in SaaS-Based Digital Transformation

    No full text
This thesis explores how organizational leaders experience and manage digital transformation (DT), with a focus on Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) with an often emerging combination with AI-enhanced SaaS adoption. While much prior research emphasizes infrastructure and performance, this study examines the interpretive and relational dimensions of leadership during technological disruption. The central concern is how leaders perceive, frame, and enact digital tools in ways that shape both organizational outcomes and employee responses.Using a qualitative, narrative design grounded in social constructivism, nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with leaders across biotechnology, law, media, consulting, public administration, and fintech. An abductive thematic analysis, guided by sensemaking (Weick, 1995) and affordance theory (Gibson, 1979), traced how leaders constructed meaning retrospectively and socially while identifying and acting on the possibilities that technologies afforded.Findings show that adoption was motivated less by abstract strategy than by concrete payoffs such as efficiency, integration, and confidentiality, with leaders retrospectively rationalizing these as organizationally plausible benefits. Implementation was mediated through training, mentoring, and narrative framing, which made technical affordances visible and meaningful. Yet adoption was hindered by resistance, fears of surveillance and job loss, data security concerns, and ethical dilemmas around AI’s impact on skills and creativity. Leaders consistently framed SaaS as enabling efficiency, collaboration, and professional growth, while employees often perceived risks and losses. The study highlights digital transformation as a cultural and narrative process as much as a technical one, showing that affordances exist materially but gain organizational significance only through leaders’ sensemaking and sensegiving

Purchasable skins as social status markers in competitive gaming environments

    No full text
Purchasable cosmetic items, commonly known as skins, have emerged as a powerful component of contemporary gaming culture. As these items have become embedded in the business models and cultural fabric of the gaming industry, questions arise regarding how skins influence players' social dynamics and self-perception, questions that this study sets out to explore. The aim of this study is to examine the extent to which purchasable skins serve as social markers in competitive gaming environments. We sought to explore whether purchasable skins function as status symbols and how they may influence a player's position within the social hierarchy both from an individual perspective and from collective perceptions. We addressed the following research question: To what extent do purchasable cosmetic items function as social markers in competitive gaming environments? Through a combination of a survey (n = 248), eight interviews, and a netnographic observation of discussions on Reddit, we collected both quantitative and qualitative data. The study is grounded in theoretical frameworks such as symbolic capital, affordance, and social imaginaries to analyze how status is associated with the ownership and display of purchasable skins in digital gaming communities. The results show that purchasable skins function as status symbols in certain gaming environments, particularly in games where skins hold economic resale value, such as Counter-Strike 2. Skins are attributed value not solely based on price or rarity but also through the social context and norms prevalent in specific gaming environments. At the same time, the status associated with purchasable skins is multifaceted. For some, they signal economic capacity and for others, economic taste, belonging, or experience
