Measuring Diversity and Justice in Malmö’s Neighborhoods : Spatial and Discursive Analyses of Malmö’s Urban Development

    No full text
This thesis examines how Malmö operationalizes “diversity” across housing and green space, using a socio-spatial justice lens and Fainstein’s Just City framework. A mixed methods design combines citywide spatial analysis of housing tenure balance and green space accessibility with a coding and keyword-based review of two planning programs (Norra Sorgenfri and Sege Park). Results reveal a marked core–periphery divide: inner districts tend to exhibit greater tenure balance yet face acute green deficits, while peripheral areas enjoy more generous green provision but lower tenure diversity. Citywide, 59.6% of neighborhoods have low access to green (<25 ha within 300 m), and few areas consistently combine high tenure diversity with equitable green access. These mismatches produce recurrent patterns: design without inclusion, housing diversity without social integration, and proximity without access, indicating that form-led diversity does not reliably translate into equitable outcomes absent affordability, tenant protections, and access to opportunity. Policy discourse analysis shows that “diversity” is valorized but unevenly operationalized: Norra Sorgenfri mobilizes physical form and fine-grained urbanism to induce diversity, whereas Sege Park couples physical variation with participatory and socio-demographic aims and a clearer ecological vocabulary. Overall, Malmö’s aspiration to be “dense, green, mixed, and near” is only partially realized; integrating physical/functional, socio-demographic, economic, and ecological diversity under an equity-driven strategy is essential to avoid reproducing fragmented landscapes of advantage. The approach and indicators are transferable to other cities and suggest a research agenda combining longitudinal tracking with interviews to link discourse, design, and lived outcomes

Financialization the Swedish way : How Vonovia became the largest owner of former public housing estates through transaction pathways and calculative practices

    No full text
The Swedish rental housing market has been in transition. The once dominating municipal public housing sector has been steadily decreasing. International firms have increasingly taken over rental housing in so-called socially deprived areas. This article analyzes the financialization of the former public housing stock. It traces activities in two housing estates and outlines the history and operations of venture capital-based real estate companies focusing on deprived areas in Sweden. These companies have upgraded multifamily homes and thus increased rents, which resulted in large profits and a decrease in the affordable housing stock. In this new reality, venture capital actors have taken advantage of contextual conditions and applied powerful calculative devices. Drawing on studies of financialization as a socio-technical process, the article contributes to knowledge by de-mystifying financialization through a detailed study of specific practices undertaken by international investors who acquire former public housing units in Sweden

Enacting a new physical education curriculum : a collaborative investigation

    No full text
Previous research shows that enacting a new curriculum is a complex process. Teachers can be enthusiastic and committed to new curricular objectives, but they can also experience frustration and disappointment. Scholars have suggested that teachers who perceive lack of support, or tensions between their personal philosophies and the educational principles underpinning a new curriculum, struggle to enact new curricula in line with their intent. Our purpose in this article is to illustrate how two Physical Education (PE) teachers experienced the enactment of a new official curriculum. An action research approach was used as design of the study. Researchers cooperated with two PE teachers for 18 months. The empirical material consisted of 50 sets of field notes from the two teachers' teaching lessons, transcripts from one semi-structured qualitative interview with both teachers following the completion of the school year. The material also consisted of reflection logs produced by the teachers containing written notes about their experiences of the curriculum enactment. We used literature on educational change (Fullan, M., & Hargreaves, A. (1991). What's worth fighting fore? Working together for your school. Ontario Public School Teachers' Federation) as our theoretical framework. Our findings show that the teachers experienced the curriculum enactment in contradictory ways. Shifting from previous PE practices that focused on sports activities and emphasized teacher instruction, to pedagogical practices informed by the new PE curriculum (including sociocultural perspectives of learning and assessment), led to uncertainty, surprise, satisfaction, as well as distrust. Our findings also showed that the teachers' experiences of the enactment were influenced by perceived gender biases. We argue that teachers' beliefs and the teaching culture were particularly influential dimensions regarding the two PE teachers' experiences of the curriculum enactment. Practitioners and researchers attempting curriculum enactment in the future should pay careful attention to such dimensions, especially given that tensions and uncertainty often occur during any educational change

Eurovision and the City : "United by Music" Meets "Malmö against Genocide"

    No full text
“United by Music” was the slogan of the 2024 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, held in Malmö. However, the festive spirit of the event oddly contrasted with what was described as “the largest police operation in Sweden’s history” (Ivarsson, 2024). This operation was mobilized in response to the expected civil protests regarding Eurovision’s decision to welcome Israel’s participation, despite its ongoing genocidal war on Gaza. We examine the temporary disruptions in Malmö’s urban space during Eurovision to understand the dissonance between a peaceful pro‐Palestine movement, a supposedly festive event, and the heightened securitization of the city with its alarmist tones. We aim to understand these contrasts within a broader temporal context and across different geographical scales. We argue that the distinct racialized characterizations of neoliberal authoritarian practices in Malmö during Eurovision are deeply enmeshed with the implications of the Western narratives about Israel and Palestine, the growing influence of the far‐right in Swedish politics, and, ultimately, the identity Malmö aspires to and is perceived to have. Rather than being a local manifestation of isolated authoritarian practices, Eurovision in Malmö opens a conceptual space to explore authoritarianism as a multiscalar discourse and practice. This perspective allows us to move beyond the dichotomy of the “democratic West” versus the “authoritarian others” by revealing the persistence of authoritarian practices in democracies

“Sexuality for people with disabilities – A forgotten right?” : How Care Staff Experience Education and Practical Support for Questions about Sexuality

    No full text
This qualitative study explores how care staff perceive and utilize their education regarding sexuality and relationships for individuals with disabilities in their daily work. The focus lies on how sexuality is addressed from both an organizational and individual perspective. The individual perspective includes an analysis of how service users may be objectified or discriminated against through legislation, guidelines, and everyday practices.Through semi-structured interviews with 24 professionals working in services related to the Swedish LSS (Act concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments), it was revealed that 23 out of 24 participants lacked specific competence development in this area. This led to an expansion of the sample and a deeper analysis of related follow-up questions. A thematic analysis identified three main themes: staff attitudes, internal communication, and the need for education. Key findings of the study highlighted the 3lack of structure and guidelines, with the majority of staff lacking both training and tools to address issues related to sexuality. Normative patterns resulted in service users' sexuality being managed according to societal norms that marginalize functional variations. The conclusion was that the lack of competence in sexual health reinforces structural issues, including objectification and the neglect of rights. To break this pattern, there is a need for education that addresses ethical dilemmas and provides practical tools, as well as a review of existing guidelines to strengthen the rights of service users

    No full text
Aim: The purpose of the study was to investigate expectations before and satisfaction after prosthodontic treatment and whether there was any correlation between the participants' expectations and satisfaction. Material and Method: A quantitative survey study was conducted where two questionnaires were distributed to patients at the Faculty of Odontology, Malmö University. The first questionnaire, given before treatment, aimed to measure the patients’ expectations of the prosthetic treatment. The second questionnaire, given after the treatment, examined the patients’ satisfaction with the rehabilitation. Results: The first survey was filled out by 31 participants, while the second survey was answered by 14 participants. A total of 14 complete questionnaire pairs were collected, only these 14 participants were included in the study. The result showed that the expectations and satisfaction of the prosthetic rehabilitation were high among the patients in almost all aspects that were studied. Men had higher expectations and greater satisfaction with the prosthodontic treatment than women, but without statistical significance. Only one of the studied areas, regarding oral hygiene, showed a statistically significant corelation between expectations and satisfaction. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the importance of effective communication between the dentist and the patient. To properly capture and understand the patient’s expectations, it is crucial to conduct a thorough history-taking before beginning treatment. The results of the survey revealed high expectations and great satisfaction with the prosthetic treatment among the participants. However, no statistically significant correlation was found. To draw more definitive conclusions and establish statistically significant relationships, a larger sample size and further research in this area are necessary

Maxillary sinus lift surgery with or without BMP-2 on implant patients, A systematic review

    No full text
Långtidsuppföljningar visade dock ingen signifikant skillnad i benvolymen. Background: The sinus lift procedure aims to restore posterior bone volume in the maxilla. A sinus lift will also help provide adequate bone volume for dental implant placement. Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) has been suggested to improve regeneration as a potentially good grafting material. Therefore, the intention of this systematic review is to evaluate evidence published to date on the effectiveness of BMP-2 in improving bone volume following a sinus lift as well as comparing BMP-2 to control groups that did not utilize BMP-2 during their procedure.  Method: The method of this study included a thorough search of the literature in Pubmed, Web of Science and Scopus for randomized controlled trials deemed relevant. The trials were then screened, reviewed and analyzed for risk of bias, and the results discussed as they related to the following.  Result and conclusion: The findings indicated BMP-2 does enhance bone regenerative ability and healing time, and promotes the ability to place dental implants sooner. However, BMP-2 does not demonstrate a significant difference in bone volume maintenance when you follow the subject at a later time point. In addition, the use of BMP-2 was associated with facial swelling postoperative. These conclusions lead to the desire and necessity for more research on the potential complications and follow-up related implications of BMP-2

Patients’ Experience of Living with Depression : A qualitative literature review

    No full text
Background: Major depressive disorder refers to a condition in which an individual experiences depressive episodes, characterized by a persistent low mood, reduced energy, and a lack of interest in activities. Depression is a common mental disorder that affects approximately 280 million people worldwide. In Sweden, about one in five individuals report having received the diagnosis at some point in their lives. Despite increased knowledge about the condition, significant issues regarding stigma remain. Patients also report inadequate encounters with nurses, where they feel overlooked and excluded from involvement in care. In order not to forget the person behind the illness, nurses need to adopt a person-centered approach in their nursing care. The Fundamentals of Care (FoC) framework describes three dimensions that guide nurses in understanding and meeting the care needs of patients living with depression. Aim: To highlight the patients’ experiences of living with depression. Method: The results of this literature review are based on ten scientific articles with a qualitative approach. The databases Cinahl and PsychINFO were used to identify relevant studies. A modified version of the SBU quality review template was used, and the analysis was conducted using Popenoe’s content analysis method. Results: The analysis identified three main categories describing the participants’ experiences: psychological experiences, physical experiences, and relational experiences, each comprising seven subcategories. Conclusion: Living with depression affects individuals on psychological, physical, and relational levels. The experiences are personal, and place demands on the nurse’s approach to care. It is therefore essential that the nurse establishes a trustful care relationship based on trust, empathy, and presence. The FoC framework can be used as a guide in nursing to address the patient’s psychological, physical, and relational needs.

    No full text
