Norm-Critical Teaching in Practice? : An Observational Study of a Campus-Based Clinical Learning Environment in Nursing Education
Nursing education plays a pivotal role in shaping future nurse professionals who contribute to social justice and health equity. To achieve this goal, nursing teachers must employ effective learning strategies. One such strategy is norm-criticism, which promotes a critical reflection of the normative preconceptions that impact health equity. This study aimed to identify how nursing teachers approach norm-criticism during learning activities in a campus-based clinical learning environment with a norm-critical profile. Employing an ethnographic approach, we analyzed participant observational data using reflective thematic analysis. Our results revealed three overarching themes: “Teaching nursing disengaged from norm-criticism,” “Teaching norms and deflecting norm-criticism,” and “A hesitant norm-critical teaching.” This study concludes that the teachers did not have the tools or lacked knowledge in norm-critical teaching strategies, likely as consequence of inadequate faculty support and guidance. Ultimately, teachers should have access to norm-critical education and opportunities to learn how to carry out norm-critical teaching.CC-BY 4.0</p
The Practice of Business Process Modeling : A Story from the Field
This article aims to increase the body of knowledge on the practical use of business process modeling to support process redesign and organizational development. A qualitative case study inspired by Action Research has been performed in an SME. The data was deductively analyzed using an established project phase model aimed to support Enterprise Modeling activities. The main contribution is the detailed descriptions of the usage of business process modeling for process redesign, adding knowledge to the practice of business process modeling. In addition, this work also increases knowledge of aspects that support the Enterprise Modeling project phase model and provides suggestions for further development of the Enterprise Modeling project phase model. Other contributions highlight the critical issues of having a holistic perspective, including the three levels of inquiry, the need to include parts of later phases in the Enterprise Modeling project phase model in a pre-phase activity, and suggestions to extend the “what to avoid” list. The work also revealed that the list could be used for evaluation purposes. Furthermore, some advice to practitioners in the form of lessons learned has been formulated, e.g., the importance of establishing the problem owner and having the future state in focus instead of the current state.CC BY 4.0</p
Experiences of living with pancreatic cancer : A literature review
Pancreatic cancer is a form of severe neoplasm with a swift disease progression and a high rate of mortality. It is the 12th leading cause of death globally for all cancer-related mortalities. Diagnosis is often late in the disease progression due to the late manifestation of symptoms which limits curative treatment options, resulting in primary palliative treatments. Patients experience a broad variety of symptoms that affect their physical and mental health causing a tremendous symptom burden. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the patient’s experience of living with pancreatic cancer. A literature review of qualitative and quantitative research articles was conducted to answer the purpose of this study. Data was collected through Cinahl, PsycINFO and PubMed and generated eleven articles which were analyzed, nine qualitative and two quantitative. The results were presented in two categories living in uncertainty which presented the patients emotions associated with getting the diagnosis together with unmeet informational needs and living with an unwell body which presented the physical bodily changes. This study concluded that pancreatic cancer has a significant impact on both the patients’ physical and mental health. Furthermore, there was a correlation between physical and psychological symptoms that all affected the patients' state of well-being. Moreover, patients experienced a lack of sufficient information concerning the disease. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that the patient is seen as a whole entity by the healthcare personnel to meet the individual care needs that arise from the illness
Validation of the Super-Brief Pathological Narcissism Inventory (SB-PNI) among Swedish adolescents
This study examines the psychometric structure and properties of the Swedish version of the Super-Brief Pathological Narcissism Inventory (SB-PNI) among adolescents. In order to ensure the validity and feasibility of the measure, we examined the factor structure, measurement invariance across gender, age and ethnicity, and construct validity in relation to a number of correlates of narcissism in adolescence. Data were drawn from a large cross-sectional survey conducted in 35 schools in southern Sweden. The sample consisted of N = 5313 adolescents (Mage = 16.10 SD = 1.55) with 52.2% girls, 45.9% boys and 1.8% adolescents with unspecified gender, from compulsory and upper secondary schools in southern Sweden. The results showed that the measure holds a two-factor structure, suggesting the use of the subscales grandiosity and vulnerability separately, rather than as a unidimensional measure. The correlated factors grandiosity and vulnerability yielded full configural and metric invariance across gender, age, and ethnicity. Both grandiosity and vulnerability were correlated with externalizing and internalizing symptoms, as well as with low self-esteem. The study provides evidence for the utility of the SB-PNI among Swedish adolescents and indicates that the measure can be used across male and female adolescents of different ages and ethnic groups.
At a time when schools are being closed for good as a strategy to meet challenges such assegregation within Western school districts, it is worth reflecting on how they affect children and their well-being. The background to the essay is based on a larger project by Flensner & Svensson (2023) linked to school closures. In the essay, the project's data from autumn 2021 has been used. The method is quantitative, and the perceived sense of well-being, security, and trust was compared between students who changed schools and those who did not. There were 1,349 students aged 10–15 who participated in the survey. Data from the project were analyzed using Pearson's correlation analysis and an independent t-test. The results showed that well-being, security, and trust correlate positively with each other. Pupils who responded to the survey and had changed schools were on average just as happy compared to those who had not changed schools. In addition, there was a significant difference in the security experience, where those who did not change schools felt safer. Those who changed schools experienced a higher level of trust. As many of the respondents chose not to answer, this could affect the generalizability of the results. The discussion highlights the effect of school closures on students' experience of well-being, security, and trust in school
The impact of leadership on the workplace learning of individuals and teams : a literature review and synthesis
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to review literature on the relationship between leadership and workplace learning, to critically analyze and discuss findings and to suggest future research paths based on the synthesis. Design/methodology/approach – This study applied a refined literature review process leading to a selection of 40 articles, which originated from 14 internationally acclaimed journals. Findings – When explaining leadership influence regarding individual and team learning, the concepts of role modeling behavior, relational support and negotiation of meaning is significant. If leaders provide support, show exemplary behavior and negotiate individual arrangements with employees, workplace learning development is positively affected. Research limitations/implications – Future studies should focus on empirical cases further illustrating how the leader–employee relationship is formed in practice, to further understand differences in leadership influence on employee workplace learning. Practical implications – The gathered knowledge implicates that carefully designed leadership training programs and personalized work arrangements between leader and employees are beneficial for leader’s ability to influence employee workplace learning. Originality/value – The reviewed studies were solely published in top management journals, which resulted in an original literature selection. This study also discusses implicit or articulated assumptions about the view of learning in the selected studies, offering additional understanding about the underlying learning views in leadership–workplace learning research.CC BY 4.0</p
Experiences of being treated with autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation for aggressive multiple sclerosis : A qualitative interview study
Background Autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) is increasingly used as a treatment for aggressive multiple sclerosis (MS) and has the potential to induce long-term remission and resolution of disease activity. Despite the extensive research on treatment outcome after AHSCT, the experience of living with MS after AHSCT has not been previously described in the scientific literature. The aim of this study was to explore long-term lived experience of people with MS treated with AHSCT. Methods and findings To exclude selection bias, all persons treated with AHSCT for MS at Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden, between 2004 and 2007 (n = 10), were asked to participate in the study, and all accepted. Open-ended interviews were conducted, digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim, and then subjected to qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach. Five main themes emerged from the interviews: (I) being diagnosed with MS–an unpredictable existence; (II) a new treatment–a possibility for a new life; (III) AHSCT–a transition; (IV) reclaiming life; and (V) a bright future accompanied by insecurity. AHSCT was described by the participants in terms of a second chance and an opportunity for a new life. The treatment became a transition from a state of illness to a state of health, enabling a previous profound uncertainty to wane and normality to be restored. Although participants of different age and sex were included, the main limitation of this study is the relatively small number of participants. Also, the inclusion of persons from one centre alone could restrict transferability of the results. Conclusions The results give a first insight into lived experience following a highly effective induction treatment for MS, and the experience of not having MS anymore. Underpinned by previously described outcome following AHSCT, the results of this study challenge the current view on MS as a chronic disease with no possible cure.CC BY 4.0</p
Social sustainability for whom? : The role of discursive boundary objects in Swedish strategic urban planning
This paper provides further understanding of how social sustainability functions as a discursive boundary object, by exploring how it is artefactually anchored during the planning process, and how this anchoring affects the discourse of social sustainability. This is explored in a Swedish strategic planning project – the RiverCity in Gothenburg – where social sustainability is the desired policy objective. This paper traces how the discourse of social sustainability shifted during the planning process (2012–2019) and shows how social sustainability contains two levels of meaning, substantives aspects of what a socially sustainable city is and procedural of how to achieve it. The substantive level functions as a boundary object between policy areas, however, the procedural level leads to goal conflicts when it is translated and artefactually anchored by different municipal departments. The findings show how the conflicts between different translations of social sustainability change the discourse over time without changing the phrasing of the first level of meaning. This finding shows that 1) while the core idea persists different translations lead to different artefactual anchoring, 2) which shows a mismatch between long-term socioeconomic goals and short-term financial goals for social sustainability, and 3) risks the concept being hijacked.CC BY 4.0</p
Higher education as a pathway for female immigrants’ establishment and well-being in Sweden
Purpose: This study focuses on higher education as a pathway to establishment in a new society for female immigrants and its role in well-being. Building on previous research that highlights social capital and empowerment as significant factors for successful establishment in a new society, and experiencing well-being, this study aims to explore if higher educationcan promote female immigrants’ establishment in Swedish society. Methods: Interviews were used to explore female immigrants’ experiences of higher educa-tion and establishment in Swedish society. Thematic analysis was used to analyse theempirical material, generating a nuanced understanding of the studied topic. Results: Higher education was found to promote establishment in Swedish society, ultimately leading to an experience of well-being. Pursuing higher education was perceived as a means of achieving personal fulfilment and success while fostering new social connections. Important factors in pursuing higher education included favourable living conditions, personal motivation, and a positive educational attitude. Conclusion: The study provides insights into female immigrants’ higher education experiences in a context that promotes establishment in Swedish society and well-being. However, more research is needed to fully investigate the driving factors for female immigrants pursuing higher education, considering their migrant background and living conditions.CC BY 4.0</p
It’s supposed to be fun!” : A qualitative study of emergent literacy
