Polemik och agiterande : Formerande(n) av Svenska kyrkan i mellankrigstidens mediala offentlighet

    No full text
This article presents three events within the Church of Sweden during the 1920s that significantly influenced public media reporting and debate. These examples illustrate how the Church of Sweden both shaped and was shaped by perceptions and expectations regarding its role during an early phase of Sweden's modernization. The selected events highlight issues that resonated with a large part of the population at the time. They include the debate surrounding, first, the anthology The Spiritual Current Situation and the Church (Det andliga nutidsläget och kyrkan, 1919), second, the controversy over the hymn book 1920, third and briefly, the media coverage of the 1925 Stockholm meeting. Looking back a century later, it becomes clear that many of the issues from that transitional period remain relevant today, despite the considerable changes in both the church and society. In a concluding comment, the article reflects on the lessons that can be drawn, seen from the perspective of an unconditional historical distance

”I think it is a person who stood for very good things.” : An Interview Study on Views of Jesus Among Non-Churchgoers

    No full text
The essay is based on interviews with 12 adult Swedes who are not regular churchgoers, focusing on their views on and relationship with Jesus. The interviews are analyzed using various dimensions from the field of Lived Religion as well as categories and questions related to christology and soteriology. The study reveals that, among the participants, it is primarily Jesus' moral teachings that are valued by most. These teachings are also seen as a source of salvation, which several participants interpret as living a good life. Regarding Jesus’ divinity, there are differing views among the participants, though few equate him with God. Opinions also vary on how important Jesus is considered to be. However, few of the dimensions within Lived Religion can be related to Jesus in combination with the participants’ lives. The essay links the analysis to Charles Taylor’s work A Secular Age, where the concepts of the immanent frame and the buffered self, combined with the pluralism he describes, serve as interpretative frameworks for how the participants view and relate to Jesus: a Jesus who is immanent, historical, and adaptable to one’s own preferences. The study also highlights how Jesus is perceived as a moral role model and as a symbol of the church

The Church as a Sacrament for the World : A Study on the Movement Toward Free-Church Folk Churches and Folk-Church Free Churches

    No full text
The thesis opens with an exploration of how the concepts of "free church" and "folk church" congregational perspectives have been employed in contrast to one another. This use of the terms reflects a specific historical context in which they originated. New eras bring new challenges, including those related to the self-understanding of churches. Moreover, the two traditions have increasingly converged, evident in the emergence of "free-church folk churches" and "folk-church free churches." The empirical turn and research into lived ecclesiology have uncovered this convergence.Through a straightforward analytical framework that highlights differing emphases on the perspectives of mediating and receiving God’s grace, the thesis demonstrates the practical implications of these varying focal points. Utilizing Jürgen Moltmann’s ecumenical methodology, free church and folk church traditions are analyzed as distinct testimonies to one and the same church. A theological dialogue based on testimonies of ecclesiological perspectives within these traditions serves as a foundation for constructing a contemporary ecclesiology. The thesis also contributes by foregrounding an expression from the global ecumenical movement: the church as a sacrament for the world. This notion provides a robust basis for theological reflection on the ecclesiological shifts that have already occurred and continue to unfold. Furthermore, the study seeks to inspire those who envision a shared future and a renewed ecclesiology for the present age to become facilitators of common Eucharistic worship in local contexts and to engage in diaconal action alongside all efforts for the common good. It advocates for the affirmation of a grassroots ecumenism that fosters ongoing and essential theological reinterpretation of ecclesiology

Baptism and the Position of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Rebaptism of converts from other Christian traditions and Its Ecumenical Impact

    No full text
This study explores the practice of re-baptism, in the Coptic Orthodox Church focusing on its ecclesiastical and pastoral aspects as well as its impact on relationships with other Christian groups. While there have been agreements between Pope Shenouda III and Pope Tawadros II regarding recognizing the baptism of Catholics many bishops, priests, and members of the Coptic Orthodox Church still advocate for re-baptism for individuals converting from denominations. The research aims to clarify the church's position on rebaptism, understand why some support this practice, and assess its influence on the church's identity and interactions with communities. Through an approach involving analysis of texts, church documents, official agreements and interviews with church representatives and congregation members this study sheds light on how re-baptism is practiced within Coptic Orthodox communities and its effects on church unity and relationships with other denominations. The findings highlight the balance between adherence, cultural traditions and pastoral concerns that maintain the tradition of re-baptism despite contradictory official agreements. This research contributes to conversations about unity and dialogue among denominations by offering an examination of re practices, in the context of the Coptic Orthodox Church. The challenges and opportunities of fostering cooperation and shared comprehension, among communities are underscored by providing insights into the spiritual influences affecting re-baptism practices, in the contemporary era
