Invisible Victims of Sexual Violence : A Minor Field Study on women and girls with disabilities in Cape Town, South Africa

    No full text
To live a life protected from exploitation, violence, and abuse is a fundamental human right. However, this seems to be a difficult human right to fulfill, at least for women and girls living with disabilities. This thesis examines the topic of sexual violence against women and girls with disabilities in the townships Langa and Gugulethu, Western Cape Province, South Africa. By addressing the research question: How is the nature, forms, and prevalence of sexual violence experienced and perceived by women and girls with disabilities? The results of the 14 semi-structured interviews that were conducted with staff members from three local NGO’s and eleven relatives to women and girls with physical and intellectual disabilities expose a high prevalence of sexual violence. In this small investigative study, two out of eleven participants had not been subjected to sexual violence, which means that 82% of these girls had been sexually violated at least once in their lifetime and only four had reported their case to the SAPS, which is a total of 64% in this sample. These violations of basic human rights are discussed and analyzed through four themes: attitudes and values, social norms and beliefs, barriers to reporting, and the police and justice system. It is clear that to create a safe and protected environment and end gender-based violence against disabled women and girls a change in the perception that society has on disabled people is needed. Without change from within the society gender-based violence and sexual violence against women and girls with disabilities will continue to grow

Pro-abortion and Christian? : A comparative text analysis on abortion from a theological view

    No full text

[Good and evil fruits of the pandemic]

    No full text
The article explores various approaches to the Covid-19 pandemic in both global and Ukrainian Orthodoxy. It in particular differentiates be- tween the fideistic and realistic takes on the Eucharist and the transmissibility of viruses through it. The former rejects, and the latter affirms the risk of getting infected with coronavirus through partaking in holy communion. The article also discusses various possibilities and forms of wor- shipping online, including the controversial practice of celebrating liturgy through communication platforms. The article suggests an updated form of the ancient agape--the meal of love that accompanied Eucharist in the early church. It also mentions the ancient and modern forms of the distri- bution of communion, with a special reference to the study by Fr Robert Taft, SJ. Another topic discussed in the article is the so called "Covid dis- sent," when people undermine or dismiss the risks and measures to prevent the spread of the disease. This dissent is popular among the Orthodox fundamentalists and conservatives, including the ones in Ukraine. The two cases of the "Covid-dissent," articulated by former Metropolitans of Kyiv Onufriy Berezovsky and Filaret Denysenko, are in the focus of the study. The article argues that the attitude to Covid-19 that these and some other hierarchs promote, is similar to the medieval "trials by ordeal," when suspects were ordered to fish a ring from boiling water or carry hot iron. They were regarded innocent only when they remained unharmed by these tests. The same attitude, the article argues, leads to stigmatization and victim- ization of those who have suffered from Covid-19

Altizer and Deleuze : Material Metaphysics for Disastrous Times

Altizer, the academic bad guy, the metaphysical modernist, the nutty, repetitive preacher who, in our first encounter, told me all about his actual meeting with Satan—is he an apt thinker for the current planetary crisis? This article argues he could be. By relating Altizer to Gilles Deleuze I am not arguing that Altizer is inspired by and in that sense belongs to a vitalist or hermetic thought tradition but I am arguing thatwhen read through a Deleuzian lens, material aspects of his metaphysicsstand forth, as does the contemporary relevance of the peculiar stylethrough which his metaphysics materializes

The meeting between Agenda 2030 and human rights at local level : Interviews with political parties, administration and civil society prior to the implementation of Agenda 2030 in the City of Stockholm

    No full text
The City of Stockholm has declared that it will be leading in the implementation of Agenda 2030. The study is based on interviews with political parties, representatives from the administration and civil society actors in the City of Stockholm. It explores how concepts within and the relation between Agenda 2030 and human rights are perceived. The results of the study are based on four themes: to leave no one behind, politics, language and practice, and partnership. A tension between human rights and Agenda 2030 is found, but also commonalities. The study shows that in local administration, Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals are often regarded as more practical than human rights. Yet, respondents believe that human rights can strengthen Agenda 2030. Across all respondent groups, the study finds that there are expectations of Agenda 2030 breaking silos, uniting actors and offering a framework that is stable over policy shift

The French politic of the veil in relation to International law : Analyzis of the politic of the veil in France

    No full text
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and other international conventions have been ratified by many countries, yet the basic freedoms established therein continue to be taken for granted. In recent years, the Islamic veil has been widely debated as an oppressive garment against Muslim women and a threat to Western secular democracy. This debate has led countries, including France, to take legal action to ban clothing that completely covers the face. France has professed itself as a secular state for centuries following its historical revolution, with a narrative of guaranteeing equal rights and opportunity to all citizens. However, this secular orientation has, in practice, led to a law that has created and promoted juridical and institutionalized inequality. This thesis discusses the prohibition of the veil in relation to basic human rights and freedoms established by the UDHR, the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as well as other relevant documents that hold the central idea of protection of religious freedom and expression. These documents will be analyzed alongside John Stuart Mill’s foundational philosophy on freedom. The main findings of this study are that the issue of the veil is complex, and its story must be understood before it can be judged. Muslim women who choose to wear the veil have a right to freedom of religion given by the UDHR. France is a signatory and therefore infringing on those rights is a violation of international law. This conclusion is supported by the theoretical foundations of freedom presented by John Stuart Mill and previous research that dealt with the issue of the veil in Western societies.Presentation gjordes online på grund av Covid19.</p

Lamentation towards God in the Old Testament

    No full text

Early and Medieval Jewish and Christian Interpretations on Genesis 2:25 - 3:24 : A Comparative Analysis
